Keyhaven is a tiny coastal hamlet, less than a mile from its bigger brother, Milford on Sea. The hamlet is part of Keyhaven Nature Reserve, which spans almost 500 acres of land overlooking the Solent with views of Hurst Castle and the Isle of Wight. There are two sailing clubs, a small sheltered harbour, a family-run boatyard and pub. The area is popular with paddle boarders, sea kayaking and canoeing, with plenty of tuition and equipment hire providers nearby. It’s also a great spot for fishing or just pootling about in your dingy. The nature reserve itself is a mecca for bird watchers and wildlife.

Visitors love the well signposted circular walks, and gravel paths surrounding the reserve which are suitable for cyclists, pushchairs and wheel chair users. Keyhaven also forms part of the Solent Way – a 60-mile coastal walk, which runs from Christchurch in the west to the other side of Portsmouth. A popular way to spend the day is to walk the long shingle spit to Hurst Castle. Originally a fortress built for Henry VIII, it has been used as a jail and been extended over the centuries.  During WWII Hurst Castle was an armoury and look out. It’s a fascinating place to visit, with great views. Hurst Castle is open most of the year (weekends only during the winter), and if you don’t fancy walking back, you can take the little ferry to Keyhaven harbour.

Excellent Sunday lunch in cosy traditional surroundings. Service was swift and very friendly. Great location for walking out to Hurst Castle afterwards.

September 2023

Very much a locals’ pub.

August 2023

Friendly pub, nice food but a little overpriced

May 2022

Despite being virutally next door we didn't visit the Gun. Coffee & cake being served from mid morning sounded good but the menu seemed expensive. This may have been because the food was exceptional but with so many other places around we gave it a miss.

April 2022

Great food and service.

March 2022

Very nice pub but only had drinks on the day.

October 2021

Tried three times to visit this pub - each time it was closed. Ring before planning a visit! Finally managed to get in and sat in the garden which needs a little attention. Would have liked to try the food but it wasn't open when we were hungry!

August 2019

Excellent food, quick service and lovely staff but has random opening times (we visited at the end of June) - best to check in advance.

August 2023

We had a delightful evening meal at The Lighthouse. The food was well presented and delicious with a very good choice. Specials are available as well which included skate on that particular night which is my husband’s favourite. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Service is very good as well. We would definitely go back

Great pub and good food

November 2017

We were made very welcome considering we didn't book and turned up during a busy period. The bar staff accommodated us by finding us a table for four and our dogs. The food was lovely and all the staff were very friendly. We came back on our third night and had the same treatment! Lovely pub!

Brilliant tasty food and service - always a treat !

March 2022

Visited three times now. This is the place for a completely different experience. Amazing food. They even managed to accommodate my shellfish and crustacean allergy and served and amazing six course taster menu. Perfect for a special occasion.

February 2022

We were lucky enough to get in for lunch and enjoyed the 6 course tasting menu which turned out to be 9 courses Wonderful food and amazing service and only £37 per head

September 2021

Amazing! Went here for a birthday meal and went for the 6 courses with wine pairings. Every course was superb though special mention goes to the pre-dessert of liquorice sorbet and sherbet which I could have eaten a whole tub of! Service was also excellent - wait staff very conscious of the current restrictions around COVID which was appreciated to make everyone feel safe but didn't detract on the experience at all. Would come back to Milford on Sea just to come back here.

October 2020

Beautiful cottage. Comfortable and a lovely base for our holidays. Situated in small village with plenty of amenities. Decorated to a very high standard and better equipped than my house ????. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Hurst Castle
(2 miles)

(11)

Come and discover this artillery fortress built by Henry VIII at the seaward end of a spit. Commanding the entrance to the Solent, Hurst Castle offers one of the best views in England. It played a part in the imprisonment of Charles I in the 17th century and defended England from invasion threats in the 19th and 20th centuries. With plenty of open space for children to explore and fantastic views of the Isle of the Wight from the top of the Tudor keep, Hurst Castle is a great day out for the whole family.

Spectacular views and great fun crossing on the ferry from Keyhaven

September 2023

Worth a visit. Walk to it on the shingle beach and get the ferry back to keyhaven. Would have been good to have the odd guide to help with questions.

August 2023

Enjoyed the great walk from Newhaven along the shingle spit to the castle. Watched the fishermen and boats in the Solent. We decided not to walk back and caught the little ferry after having a coffee at the Castle cafe. A most enjoyable few hours. Didn't do the castle - quite expensive.....a bit annoyed you cannot use their loos - they are for castle visitors only!

May 2023

Well worth the walk along the spit.

April 2022

Took the first Ferry over to the castle - not a sailor but was sat at the front and it was very calm and a short distance. Castle has some great views and information both historical and what you could see around you. Walked back along the Spit which was some 2 miles and had lunch at the Lighthouse which was excellent - recommend the cocktails and two of our group were Vegan and the Lighthouse catered with vegan Mains and Dessert. Recommend

September 2021

Very interesting visit and the ferry ride was lovely.

October 2020

We discovered this by accident. A long but enjoyable walk along the gravel spit led us to the castle which from the outside looked very forbidding. Really enjoyed exploring, seeing the huge guns & discovering the history around the place. Was delighted by the Garrison Theatre and the views from the top of the building. Took the little ferry back which was a treat - my feet certainly agreed with that decision! Each individual expense (entry fee, cafe & ferry) was not large but it all added up to a more expensive day than anticipated.

October 2019

Great day out for all the family. Took the ferry to the Castle as quite a long walk on shingle pathway, was worth the expense for the experience. Lots to see but would benefit from more information boards as little provided unless you take audio tour. Very friendly staff and fabulous tea room, great homemade cakes.

October 2019

We visited on a gloomy and windy day so chose to go by ferry from Keyhaven, as the walk along the shingle bank would not have been kind to our dodgy hips and knees! Hurst Castle exceeded expectations and was well worth the visit, although the combined costs of entry to the Castle, ferry trips and car parking at Keyhaven made it quite an expensive afternoon out.

September 2019

Delightful castle to roam around with breathtaking views of Isle of Wight. Lots to look at and enough stairs, tunnels and exhibitions to keep the children interested for a couple of hours. The ferry ride over wasn't too long either - about 15 minutes.

August 2018

Very enjoyable visit to Hurst Castle. We had a return trip on the ferry. Lovely views to the Isle of Wight.

February 2024

Absolutely beautiful walk. Lots of different footpaths, well maintained, with spectacular views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. A great place for spotting many species of wading birds

November 2023

Excellent walk

October 2023

walked around the Keyhaven Marshes a number of times on our visit, enjoying different views and sites each time. Slightly confused by the access across the Marian but once we had found the path we were OK. Despite the recent wet weather the paths were reasonable and fine for sturdy /walking shoes.

October 2023

Beautiful nature reserve. Saw many species of birds including lapwing and turnstones

September 2023

Beautiful landscape with loads of birdlife. Makes for an excellent walk along the cost to Hurst Castle or Milford on Sea. A wonderfully peaceful and atmospheric place, especially at sunrise or sunset.

September 2023

April 2023

Lovely walk from Keyhave

April 2023

Absolutely stunning. Fantastic for birdwatchers or if you just want a stroll by the sea.

September 2022

Amazing and tranquil. A pleasant walk and views of the bay and Isle of Wight.

August 2022

Gorgeous! fabulous views of the solent, Great way to spend a day- walk or cycle from Lymington around to the beaches and cafes at Milford

June 2022

Fabulous area for a bracing winter walk!

January 2022

Visit early and on a week day to avoid crowds and to get parked in the Keyhaven car park. Parking at Keyhaven end allows you to also visit Hurst Castle,, although on previous occasion we have parked in Lymington and walked the full lenghth of sea wall walk to Keyhaven and the Gunn Inn pub and back to Lymington. The views are extensive and wonderful, the wildlife varies due to season but there is always something to spot either from the sea wall path or down in the protected grassy paths of the reserve. A must for all birdwatchers and those who appreciate nature - you won't be disappointed.

September 2021

Lovely spot and great you can cycle along to Keyhaven and Milford on Sea. Save some energy for the walk to Hurst Castle, that is quite a walk at just over 1.5 miles..

August 2021

Great place for a walk or bike ride straight from Lymington

August 2021

A lovely part of the coastline to walk, easy walking.

July 2021

Park at the marina, walk past the open air sea swimming pool and onward to this lovely little reserve were you can enjoy walks of varying lengths to suit your needs, with views over the Solent towards the Isle of Wight on one side and over the salt marshes on the over.

July 2021

This is the iconic walk from Lymington: the circular route, returning via Pennington takes most of the day, but the views and the wildlife are outstanding. Beware, you can no longer get a simple sandwich at The Gun, Keyhaven for lunch and it's only open on certain days. Probably best to take a picnic these days!

July 2021

Lovely place to walk

June 2021

We really enjoyed the walk round the nature reserve, it was well worth it.

September 2020

Lovely walks and plenty of room for everyone

September 2020

Great walk just wish the castle had been open will definitely try another time

January 2020

This area was easy to get to, well marked and well used. We spent several hours there over the week and saw over 45 species of birds. It was windy when we were there and unsurprisingly there was little shelter. Well worth a visit if you like birds.

June 2019

An excellent place to visit and see numerous birds including Avocets and Linnets. Parking at Keyhaven is a good place to start.

June 2019

This was a delight to visit with spoonbills, oyster catchers and nesting avocets. We had to hire a mobility scooter for our holiday due to a broken leg and most of the reserve was accessible. The map said there were two small areas unsuitable for wheelchairs, perhaps these could be looked at as it would then be possible to do a circular route.

June 2019

Lots of interesting sea birds and pleasant scenery. Easy walking paths and decent car parks at either end with toilet facilities.

July 2018

Lovely off road cycle route

June 2018

A great, easy, level walk with masses of interesting flora and fauna particularly wading birds and insects.

October 2017

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.

December 2017

November 2017

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(6 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

October 2023

We enjoyed our stay.

October 2023

A clean and pleasant cottage situated only a couple of minutes walk from Keyhaven Harbour. It was well equipped and has a large secluded garden with a nice open aspect. The downstairs has been (I believe) recently opened up to what I would describe as "open plan". The lounge is comfortable with great views of the garden through the expansive patio doors. Good TV and internet reception which seemed very fast. The cottage is ideally placed for walks from the door. If you like birdwatching then there are numerous walks over Keyhaven and Pennington Marshes and along the sea wall to Lymington. You can also walk out to Hurst Castle along the spit or go by ferry from the harbour. It's worth paying to enter the castle for the views as well as the history. The beaches of Southbourne, Barton on Sea and Milford are just a short drive away as is the New Forest, all worth exploring. A thoroughly enjoyable stay

October 2023

Another lovely stay at Holmlea.

Our 2nd stay at Homelea and it is one of the best cottages we have stayed in. Overall very comfortable and homely and loved the garden and aspect. Cannot really fault and would highly recommend to others. I expect we will be back. Kind regards ~ Avril de Vismes & Edward Locke

Sofa and arm chairs are not that comfortable. Cottage, beautiful garden, shower cubicle and location are lovely. Good that bed linen is now supplied. Hairdryer would have been useful.

An absolutely lovely place to stay. Homelea has a stunning, spacious garden and the house is so well equipped. We had a brilliant time and would recommend Homelea to others, especially those with children (so much room to play!).
