The Coastguard Cottages at Lannacombe stand proudly overlooking the beautiful panorama of Lannacombe Bay on the southernmost tip of South Devon, a stunning unspoilt location that comes with its own beach, Ivy Cove. 1 Ivy Cove is the end cottage of a terrace of three and is a comfortable and practical, cottage set in a simply glorious spot. The coastal path passes behind the cottages and from here there are miles of superb walking along the path that stretches from Dartmouth to Salcombe along craggy cliffs that dip into sandy coves. Lannacombe beach, a few minutes from the cottage, is a wide sandy bay at low tide, and is a favourite with surfers and families alike. Walking, swimming, surfing and rock pooling are just some of the joys of this location or simply enjoy the peace and spectacular views from the cottage and garden at any time of the year.

Entrance hall, door into utility room with washing machine, and door into downstairs shower room. Large living room with stunning views out to sea and across to Lannacombe from the windows. This room is comfortably furnished with two sofas, armchair, TV, a log burner, large dining table to seat 8. Kitchen with views out to sea, electric cooker, dishwasher , integrated fridge freezer. Stairs to the first floor. Double bedroom with 4ft 6in bed, fitted cupboard and wonderful views. Small double bedroom. Adjacent bathroom with bath with shower over, basin and WC. Stairs to the top floor with two 3ft beds and bunk beds (3') and more wonderful views. Access to the cottage is at the rear.

A fairly rough track (not really suitable for low slung cars) leads from Lannacombe Beach to the Coastguard Cottages and the area surrounding them is enclosed by low walls and hedging. The grounds are not divided between the cottages and No. 1 has its own private area to the side of the property and driveway with table and benches. A raised area at the rear provides a communal clothes line. Gate on the edge of the grounds of the cottages allows access to a path down to Ivy Cove beach below.

Games Room/Den, with TV, DVD and Table Tennis table.

If you are looking for a retreat where you feel completely cut off from the rest of the world, then Lannacombe is for you! Offering some of the finest coastline in South Devon, the secluded sandy beaches at Lannacombe are completely unspoilt and normally very quiet, even in the height of summer, due to limited parking and the remote location.

Sitting right on the coastal path there are miles of stunning coastal path to explore, perfect for walkers of all abilities, while at low tide the beach at Lannacombe is perfect for rock pooling. The nearby village of East Prawle is home to one of the region’s best-loved and most quirky pubs, The Pig’s Nose, while the nearby villages of Beesands and Torcross also offer excellent pubs and restaurants, including fabulous fish and chips at the Start Bay Inn.

A few miles to the west lies East Portlemouth which offers more sandy beaches and ferry access across the estuary to the stunning waterside town of Salcombe. Now a firm favourite with millionaires, celebrities and boat lovers; and home to numerous excellent shops, cafés and restaurants; the town is the perfect day trip from isolated Lannacombe. Slightly further afield are the towns of Kingsbridge and Dartmouth which offer delicious delis, restaurants and independent shops, as well large supermarkets for all those essentials.

A holiday cottage in Lannacombe offers a peaceful escape from the daily grind in a truly beautiful remote and natural coastal setting.

Parking for two cars. As this parking area is shared with 2 Ivy Cove consideration should be given to maintaining access. Further parking (chargeable) is available on Lannacombe beach but this can be restricted due to limited availability and there is strictly no overnight parking.

 • Included: Bed linen (not towels), heating (electric heaters), electricity, 1 basket of logs and coal in winter.
 • Telephone: For incoming calls only. Mobile reception poor.
 • Wifi
 • Local Facilities: Ivy Cove beach in front of cottage and Lannacombe beach a few minutes walk. Stokeley Farm shop approx 4 miles. Kingsbridge 9 miles. Pubs in Beesands and East Prawle approx 4 miles each. East Prawle 1.5 miles by coastal footpath.

Piglet Café
(2 miles)

(30)

A tiny café on the village green serving light lunches, coffees, cream teas and ice creams. A good spot to take a break after walking on the South West Coast Path.

Eccletic and characterful! Great atmosphere and incredible home cooked Sunday dinner. Huge portions!

April 2024

Great pub Full of locals and visitors. Very dog friendly. Food was mostly good. Really nice cider. Live music from al local young band was fun. Looking forwards to visiting again .

October 2023

Whilst on holiday, we went in for a drink. Yes, its quirky, full of character, locals and dogs. Suits us fine as we are from rural area. But decided against food as there's a fine line between character and grime.

October 2023

The Pigs Nose is a great pub for a pint and some food. It was busy in October and full of dogs so don’t go there if you don’t like dogs!

October 2023

Good food, friendly staff, and very quaint.

September 2023

There is everything to love and nothing to be negative about. Good food ,great owners, amazing location. Excellent . .

September 2023

we had a few drinks in here over the week... one evening we just sat on the green tasting the local ale and ordered pizza from the pub... a great way to while away the time. staff are very friendly and the pub draws a good, interesting, crowd.

July 2023

We had a meal at The Pigs Nose on the Friday evening of the day we arrived. The pub was very busy but the staff were very efficient and dealt with the customers well. The food was excellent and we really enjoyed our visit.

July 2023

Quaint pub reasonably priced food but mainly burgers or fish and chips.

July 2023

What a great lively pub! Supported by locals and visitors with plenty of memorabilia to study while you sup a pint or 3 and chat to the friendly staff. Probably could do with a bit of a make over but i guess thats its charm ?. The food was fresh and delicious ?...but booking is essential...especially during the busy summer months.

May 2023

Best pub around. Great food, drink and atmosphere plus ideal location for exploring the coastline.

April 2023

Fantastic pub with a great welcome feel and quirky decor

August 2022

Excellent pub but after music weekend stock levels were poor so many things unavailable. Food was tasty but service poor with mains coming an hour apart for a table of 5. Apparently due to pizzas being made by a different organisation. We ate on Sunday and I cancelled a repeat meal for the Tuesday personally 30 hours before the booking and was told we would be charged as per the web site 72 hours notice required. I told the manager this was unacceptable as we wanted to cancel as we were not happy with the first meal. He took offence and barred me. L:uckily there was an older lady present who got him to drop the charge. We chose not to go to the pub again

August 2022

Lovely character and friendly staff serving a nice menu. It was fully booked the night we went but food was still served quickly and tasted great.

July 2022

Quirky pub with friendly and helpful staff. Need to book at weekends/peak season if you want to eat. Excellent food and varied daily specials.

July 2022

Great little pub, book in advance as it gets busy, lovely food and all very friendly

June 2022

Ok- ish but wouldn’t rush back albeit handy just to walk there. Lots of what presumed locals inside. However there are plenty of super eating places around if you want to go by car.

May 2022

Good quirky pub. Beer excellent.

May 2022

Lovely value for money food, excellent welcome too. Very rustic, rural.

May 2022

September 2021

GREAT PUB,FANTASTIC FOOD AND DRINKS AND NOT TOO EXPENSIVE

September 2021

Loved it. Great place, lovely people and great food Would love to come back and carry on drinking into the night

September 2021

We had an excellent lunch. The staff were delightful and SO helpful. One member of staff offered to drive us to Mill Bay so our disabled granddaughter could go to the beach, we really appreciated this act of kindness. We declined his offer but we’re so impressed by it. A big thank you to him.

September 2021

Eclectic decor serving great food. Use online booking app “Open table” to book a table for lunch/dinner (advised during peak season)

September 2021

Let down by both food quality and beer quality. We were also overcharged for all food items - which we noticed and got corrected. A real shame as it is so handy.

June 2021

Rustic pub with great beers. The service is chaotic though so be prepared for it!

June 2021

I would recommend the Gammon, egg and chips, plus the fish and chips, however other food offerings were average. The staff were friendly, but at times, the service best described as akin to Faulty Towers.

June 2021

Quirky village pub. Very friendly with good food

May 2021

My wife and I visited the Pigs Nose Inn on several occasions while staying in East Prawle. The hospitality was great with friendly polite and helpful staff doing well to maintain a good service under difficult circumstances with the current Pandemic. The food and drinks menu was comprehensive with great fish and chips and good local beers. It was nice that this old pub had maintained its character.

October 2020

A lovely, friendly place with great beer and great company.

October 2019

We loved the all the quirky objects in the bar and across the ceiling. We had a very tasty Sunday lunch and the pies were great. Had a few games of Pool in the back room one evening and we were made to feel very welcome at this local inn.

Brilliant pub. Very friendly with a good atmosphere. The food was good enough for our taste buds and the beers were great (a bit too moorish infact!)

November 2018

A great pub with a good selection of beers and ciders and good food served too. The atmosphere is welcoming as you walk in and you soon get into conversation with the locals and their dogs! A great place to visit!

November 2018

This is a real Locals pub however we were made welcome. It is very dog friendly. The food was simple but tasty.

October 2018

Quirky, could be much cleaner. Not too impressed with dogs climbing on furniture next to people eating food.food basic but OK.beer good.good atmosphere

September 2018

Very good local beer and terrific atmosphere with old-fashioned opening hours.

May 2018

Why oh why didn't we go there more often...only went on our last night. Such a lively, personable and vibrantly vivid place with wonderful staff and exceptional food - loved it!

May 2018

Great little pub - nice pint of Red Devon and Devon Pride!

April 2018

Lovely friendly and quirky pub. Excellent cask ales and one of the best Fish and Chip lunches ever. Would love to come back for one of their gig nights.

April 2018

Beer good, but food extremely indifferent (a Saturday lunch time). Very disappointed this time as last time we came to the area, we could have eaten there every day.

October 2017

A really fabulous, relaxed, enjoyable pub, with a great mix of locals, tourists, old and young and lots of lovely dogs. Fabulous food and a selection of games to play too. Really loved it.

September 2017

What a great pub. Friendly atmosphere, good food and local cider.

August 2017

Needs a good clean and then it could be a great pub.

May 2017

A fantastic pub - wonderful atmosphere, great food, and friendly staff

May 2017

This place is like walking into the moulin Rouge.... It's an incredible experience. You never quite know what to expect when you enter into the rabbit hole of East Prawle. However, one thing is for sure, it's all happening in the Pigs Nose. With Atomic Kitten playing last year it draws crowds from far and wide. You would never know what awaits behind the doors of the pigs nose when you drive into the sleepy little village of East Prawle. Whatever the night holds, quiet or explosive, you are sure to be entered. Recently there have been some insanely talented musicians playing at the pub. The landlady and her son gives everyone a warm welcome and makes you feel like your in your own sitting room. It is definitly worth coming the extra mile for.

Visited several times, always excellent food.

August 2023

Best roast beef I've ever had! It almost melted in my mouth.

August 2023

Only had drinks here. A non alcoholic drink and a gin and tonic. Nothing special. Both for just under £17 ?? I don’t think so. We were robbed.

Lovely clean pub & restaurant with very friendly (dog loving) staff who made us welcome as soon as we arrived in the village. The food in the restaurant is excellent quality at a fair price….Thank you!

July 2022

One of the best restaurant meals we have had in a long time. Quality ingredients and I suspect prepared by an actual trained chef which is a rarity these days. Quite pricey but nevertheless good value given the quality. Staff were friendly, efficient and seemed pleased to have you dining with them.

July 2022

Whether you are staying in the village or passing through you must call into the Cricket Inn. They have it all! Good selection of drinks, exceptional food (& I mean exceptional), seaview like nowhere else & all in a modern setting which still retains the history of the village. Then we have the Cricket Inn team who are just A-MAZ-ING. After 30+ years we wouldn't keep returning if it was something special. Keep up the excellent work & hopefully, we'll see you all very soon.

July 2022

Great menu and great service. If you like seafood this is a great place to visit. Highly recommended and we will be back

June 2022

We had a delicious meal here.. lobster and sole beautifully cooked.. highly recommend but do book particularly in the height if summer

May 2022

We had a gorgeous fresh fish meal at this lovely restaurant, very nice staff and the food and service was first class. However I think it is a bit pricey, so unfortunately we could only go once during our stay, which was a shame.

April 2022

Great pub, Good food and beer, staff very friendly. Well worth a visit.

March 2022

Fabulous

March 2022

We went in here and ordered steak, quite expensive for what it is and one steak was quite chewy and fatty. So much so that most of it couldn't be eaten, we did mention it but we're fobbed off which I find quite short sighted as we won't return!

March 2022

had a lovely meal here

November 2020

Fantastic pub, food amazing! We always eat here at least twice during our weeks in Beesands!

November 2020

Had a lovely lunch here well needed rest after a coastal walk, it was lovely but because of my fish and shellfish allergy I felt it was a bit limited choice on the menu as I’m not a very big red meat eater but it didn’t spoil it as the staff and place was lovely

October 2020

Booked for an evening meal, lovely food and pleasant staff who didn't mind us bringing the dog along either. Food was great, service prompt and reasonable pricing. Would definitely return.

August 2019

Friendly staff and fabulous food

August 2019

Very convenient of you are staying in Beesands, as we were , and it provides a pretty good selection of dishes for most tastes. The food is absolutely fine - typical pub fare - a bit formulaic - but perfectly acceptable. the service was quite good but they did bring our coffees before the desserts - which was odd. The main courses were quite good but we didn't rate the desserts - disappointing.

June 2019

Absolutely a wonderful find. The food is outstanding. Well known for seafood but their steaks are tasty, tender and succulent too. Very dog friendly too. Would highly recommend negotiating the lanes to Beesands to have a meal at the Cricket Inn. Prices are a bit on the high side compared to other places in the area but this is understandable due to the very high quality of the ingredients used.

June 2019

Excellent beer, brilliant staff and fabulous food. Well worth booking a table as it's very popular. Not cheap, but still good value for money .

May 2019

Excellent food, great with children and dogs welcome

Gorgeous food, lovely staff, always busy which is a good testament!

October 2018

October 2018

Lovely pub, didn't manage to eat as we arrived inbetween service. Dog friendly pub. Niice walk along the front from here.

October 2018

Nice place we had fish n chips was good but not worth the price tag drinks cost to .shame as we would of spent more time there if was bit cheaper but need a bank loan for that lol .

September 2018

Amazing food as always, lovely staff, and fantastic drink selection.

August 2018

Lovely pub in beautiful location. A varied menu with plenty of fresh fish dishes , the fish pie was exceptionally good. Good service and friendly staff who made the effort to pass the time of day even though they were busy. The beer at £5.00 a pint was expensive. Nothing too much trouble. Would visit again.

June 2018

Excellent and varied menu- good value for money . The staff were really friendly and the place had a good atmosphere. It was so convenient as we were only a couple of doors away - so we didn't need to get in the car and brave those narrow , winding and unpredictable Devon lanes!

June 2018

We had a lovely meal at the Cricket Inn, it was up to its usual standards, and the service was excellent; John Dory, seafood carbonara and fish and chips, all superb. That also let us bring in our dog, which was great.

June 2018

We love this pub and always visit at least once when staying in Beesands. Food as good as usual. Maybe staff not as friendly as previous years - particularly the Californian Maitre D'?? Still a great place for a lovely meal!

July 2017

Lovely pub which always seems to be busy. A varied menu with plenty of fresh fish dishes and juicy steaks. Good service and friendly staff who made the effort to pass the time of day even though they were busy. Nothing too much trouble. Would visit again.

July 2017

Expensive drinks but food good

June 2017

Sunday lunch was very good reasonably priced for location but went back during week had lemon sole on there specials plus one other standard meal and two drinks came to 60 pounds extremely overpriced especially as after charging me 22 pound for the fish the veg was an extra 4 pound .We considered this to be overpriced for what we got .

May 2017

Friendly and efficient staff with good choice of food but somewhat limited for vegetarians. Dog friendly.

April 2017

Wonderful food and impeccable service. Hope you are in business for a good many years you deserve it

Lovely sunday lunch. Live music downstairs but we were sat upstairs so couldn't hear it which was a shame. Staff all really nice and friendly.

October 2023

Omg what a gorgeous pub! Stunning roast dinner on the Sunday we were there. Staff greeted us with a friendly attitude and we weren’t rushed to take our table but offered a space for a drink by the stream. After lunch there was a fab duo playing on the terrace. Loved it and will be back

September 2023

Good food and beer but a little expensive. Potatoes and veg are extras.

July 2023

The best roast dinner we've had in a long time! Well worth a visit. Excellent service too!

September 2022

Brilliant restaurant and pub.

September 2022

Lovely pub in a nice location. Restaurant food was very nice, but this is not your normal “pub food” it’s high class, using local produce. The prices reflect this… it would be worth ringing up and asking when the next “high tide BBQ” is, as you don’t need to book for this and it looked very tasty !! Folks arrive on boats up the estuary and visit for a pint and a burger!

August 2022

Excellent food and service, with a great atmosphere. Only difficulty was finding somewhere to park the car

August 2022

We ate here twice during our stay in South Pool, on both occasions the food and service were excellent. The Millbrook is very dog friendly and does get busy so booking is essential.

September 2021

Very disappointed had visited before and had a great experience, this time aftwr booking 4 months in advance we waited 1 hour for good and then the chicken was not cooked through. Maybe a few less chips! Food very good. Tasty and team very friendly.

April 2022

Nice, only used as a takeaway - but the portions of chips were ridiculously large - one portion would feed three people, and if you don't know then it's a waste of food! Quite expensive too.

September 2019

Best fish dinner ever. Really enjoyed our evening.

September 2019

We had a take away - it was a really busy evening - but we were really disappointed with the quality of the food - sorry. Chips not very appetising. Scampi dry and looked old. Fish lots of batter.. The scallops however were excellent!

August 2019

Fish and chips to die for, delicious fresh fish all cooked to order...can’t wait to revisit. Well done someone has got this just right.

August 2019

This is a fantastic place to eat . We had been here previously when it was literally a shack - prone to strong winds and gales! However it is now ensconced in much more solid and permanent surroundings. The food is excellent - a wonderful choice of seafood dishes - all freshly prepared . The staff are lovely and the service is great. Incredibly good value- plus you can take your own wine for a small corkage charge . thoroughly recommended for everyone who loves fish and seafood.

June 2019

completely refurbished Excellent food friendly staff

June 2019

The newly built Cafe is brilliant. They seem to be open all the time. Very nice takeaway, great chips to accompany the fish.

June 2019

It’s a new look on the outside but the food very much of the same high quality at the Britannia in Beesands. The new ‘shack’ doesn’t really do it justice with a completely renovated contemporary dining room in keeping with the seaside location and beach hut vibe with excellent views of the bay. There seems to be loads more space too and the higher ceiling gives light to the treats being served from the kitchen. Dave and the team in the kitchen maintain their high standards of food preparation and making dishes that look and taste fantastic, the front of house team are equally as attentive making a great relaxed dining experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Britannia so come back if you have been before and see the changes or give it a go if you never have been. ????????

June 2019

Unfortunately this was still being worked on even though it says reopening Spring 2019 so had to go into either Kingsbridge or Dartmouth for provisions.

March 2019

Was gutted that is places had closed down the day before we got there was looking forward to trying this places. We did have a bit of luck we had just got there after a 5 hour drive not knowing it was closed and they were putting food in car oh the smell it was so good that's when they told us about colseing down. But they did lets us try some of the food they had cooked to feed 200 kids and omg it was lush . Just wish I could try more of it . Good luck with the new building

September 2018

Delicious fish & chips & Crevettes in garlic butter with salad from the takeaway eaten on the beach on a lovely summers evening. Amazing selection of fish & shellfish from Scallops to John Dory. Eat in & bring your own bottle policy. They are planning a refurb end of season so check their Facebook page before you go to check on progress.

September 2018

Think the shop could offer much more and it is quite pricey . We had take away fish and chips which were excellent x

August 2018

Great find. Fresh fish gorgeous and welcome advice on how to cook. Takeaway fish and chips fantastic. Ate in one day - amazing! Staff really lovely.

July 2018

This is one of our favourite restaurants A fantastic selection of fish and seafood We are here four evenings in one week!

June 2018

What a beautiful place to eat in a perfect location total able to eat alfresco or dine in. Both breakfast and dinner was perfectly cooked and presented the staff so friendly. Able to have all menu choices as takeaway and site and eat overlooking the English channel, perfect day.

June 2018

A fantastic place to eat really good fresh fish simply prepared and the added bonus is you can take your own wine ( or beer) as they are not licensed. It is quite small so you probably need to book especially in the summer months . Excellent value !

June 2018

The Shack is fabulous - brilliant staff, lovely food and the most amazing setting. Treat yourselves and go along!

June 2018

You do have to book in advance because it is so popular. The seafood was up to the usual high standard, and the whole brown crab (order in advance) was exceptional!!

June 2018

We always book a meal here when we stay in Beesands. We did have a good meal here but perhaps not as good as previous years and the drainy smell by our table was a bit off-putting. Friendly staff!

May 2018

Fantastic Food and atmosphere, great place and perfect location. Been visiting the Shack now for over 6 years. Fish and Chips are PHENOMENAL as is all the other food.

May 2018

Very good fish and chips from the take out.

September 2017

Visited a few times during our week in Beesands and also had takeaway. Great food and lovely staff who really know how to look after their customers. Even went out to rescue lost customers after a local road was closed. Will definitely visit again. Make sure you book though, they will squeeze you in if they can but they are always busy.

July 2017

The best food by a mile in this area of South Devon. We had a lovely evening sat on a bench opposite - we brought our own wine as there's no licence (but this saves on costs!). We had the freshly caught and cooked lobster, 'crack-your-own' crab, and a beautiful bowl of mussels. The lady owner or manager couldn't have been more helpful - we turned up on a Friday night with no reservation, and she went out of her way to accommodate us. If you only go to one place to eat whilst on holiday in the area, then it has to be here. Yes, rustic. Yes, simple. But simple fresh food, cooked amazingly well....and what a view!!! Go with friends and make an evening of it! Cannot recommend highly enough!!

June 2017

A fave to do- grab fish & chips from their takeaway and sit and eat on the beach. Simply perfect.

June 2017

Wonderful! Such delicious food and friendly staff.

June 2017

Had a lovely meal at The Britannia. Super fresh fish , great people and it's a BYO. What more could you wish for! Necessary to book ahead as there are only a few tables.

May 2017

Great food, friendly and attentive staff, dogs made welcome , just perfect.

April 2017

Managed to squeeze us in for an early evening booking - so glad they did. Great food, and top notch service from very friendly staff. Seafood Jumbalaya is wonderful, and rather filling. If you are nearby, and are able to get a reservation do - if not, try the takeaway and each on the beach :)

Start Point Lighthouse
Start Point Lighthouse
(2 miles)

(10)

Built in 1836 to mark one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English coast, Start Point lighthouse was designed by James Walker and sits on a headland that runs sharply out into the sea on the south side of Start Bay near Dartmouth. Its style is largely influenced by the Gothic movement, and the optic used was the first of its kind. Coastal erosion has affected it over time and the lighthouse was automated in 1993, but it’s still in operation and can now be visited. Tours last around 45 minutes and are on the hour from 11am until 4pm, or 5pm in July and August. Prices start at £4.00 for adults and £2.50 for children – remember to wear sensible shoes and keep in mind that tours are weather dependent… as you might expect!

My dacshund and I walked along the coastal path . Although Start Point was not open at the time, we were not disappointed, the coastal walk was lovely, as we got nearer to the lighthouse, we stood and watched in amazement at the tuna fish jumping high out of the water. It was spectacular to watch . I would thoroughly recommend.

December 2023

Excellent views, we went when it was closed unfortunately but a great walk for the dogs. You have to pay to park but I think it was only £4

June 2023

Sadly lighthouse was closed due to COVID, however it was still worth a visit for the views and the walk along the headlands. It was awesome, saw lots of seals playing around the rocks. Wear good footwear as a little uneven in places, lots places to sit and enjoy the view. Binoculars are a must. I loved it and I’m not a strong Walker

May 2021

If you can visit on a day when you can take a tour it's well worth it. The staff are knowledgable and make the tour really interesting for children and adults alike. It's a narrow & steep climb in places.

April 2021

Great walk along the coast path from Beesands - fantastic views

October 2020

The msot beatiful stratch of coastline I have walked along for a while. We did a circular walk which included Hallsands, and the lighthouse, and would throughly recommend visiting the lighthouse, if just for the views. Be aware thought, that there are limioted ameneities - only a portacabin loo in the carpark

September 2019

Stunning views from here. Great walk along from the car park, very accessible for all levels of fitness. Visitor centre was closed when we arrived for refurbishment at the end of the season but still worth the walk.

October 2018

Had a really interesting tour at the end of September, which was the highlight of our holiday. Out guide, Mary, was very friendly and informative. Would highly recommend this. Fantastic location and views and very interesting history. Thanks Mary.

October 2017

We really enjoyed our visit. My husband and son had a tour (£5 per adult and under 5's free) and thought it was brilliant. Children under 1.1m's tall can not go on the tour so my younger son and I enjoyed the coastal views which were fantastic.

June 2017

Fantastic walk with wonderful views, you'll find the best beach in the South Hams hear, bit of a walk but it is glorious.

Visited on a sunny morning in May so quite busy. We were greeted at the entrance, seated inside then left. No menu provided, I had to ask for it. A couple who arrived well after us had their order taken first. We waited for ages. Then discovered there is a half hour hour gap between breakfast orders ending and lunch orders beginning when only cakes are availble, not even a sandwich. Staff were rushed and inattentive, disappointing experience.

Lannacombe Beach
Lannacombe Beach
(Less than a mile)

(13)

Rugged and unspoiled, Lannacombe is the beach for those looking for total escapism on their South West holiday. Small and perfect for escaping from the summer crowds, it’s one of the best places to visit to simply enjoy the Devon scenery in all its natural glory. There’s a small car park just behind the beach so do get there early in order to guarantee a space, although there is further parking a short walk away if need be. Dogs are welcome at the beach throughout the year and as it offers access to the Coast Path it’s a good idea to combine your visit with a walk to take in the views of sea and countryside, perhaps towards Start Point where there is further parking around 30-40 minutes away on foot. At low tide the beach offers gentle rock pooling so it’s a lovely spot to head to for a quiet afternoon with the family, building sandcastles and eating sandwiches if you remember to bring them. There aren’t any cafes and restaurants immediately on site, so do remember to take anything you need with you, and there aren’t any toilets in the near vicinity either, so that’s worth keeping in mind when you plan your day. If you have been on holidays in Devon and Cornwall before you will also know that you need to watch our for the tide at many of the beaches, including this one in order to avoid disappointment or getting wet, you can pick up a tide timetable at local post offices!

Lovely walk along the coast from Horizons. Beautiful sandy beach

April 2024

Lannacombe is a lovely beach! The beach is gentle and slopes nicely into the sea. We swam in October and it was beautiful. If you haven’t been there are no facilities and only parking for about 8-9 cars so get there early in peak season. It’s on the SW Coast path and we have walked from East Prawle though takes a while. Fabulous beach. Keep it to yourself!

October 2023

Best beach in the area, spent a lovely sunny day here.

September 2023

A favourite beach of us, we spent another lovely afternoon there, superb view and great for rock pooling.

April 2022

Fantastic beach! Secluded and beautiful. Windy narrow lanes to reach it but worth it. We were able to get a car space in the small car park which was great. Our dog loved it and so did we!

October 2021

Best beach in the world! Dont tell anyone or else we will never get one of the 8 parking spaces!

September 2021

Unspoilt and away from the crowds. Perfect secret

August 2021

Beautiful unspoilt beach.

July 2021

We walked here from East Prawle, it was a delightful find and we explored the beach whilst en route along the coastal path. I imagine it would be extremely busy in high season but we were the only ones there so felt very lucky to have found it.

June 2021

Lovely but inaccessible down rough extremely narrow lane with very tiny parking & limited turning , best to walk from Start Point car park

October 2020

Very limited parking (but we got lucky!). Wide, spacious but covered in dense seaweed - what's happened? It never used to be so weedy.

August 2019

Excellent secluded beach once you find it. Signs would be helpful but this would be detrimental as visitors would "flood" the small car park. Well worth visiting and walking along the stunning cliff walks

September 2018

A lovely beach where we enjoy sitting and eating our sandwiches after walking from Start Point.

May 2018

North Hallsands
North Hallsands
(2 miles)

(7)

A quiet beach of fine shingle with a reed bed providing the backdrop, North Hallsands is a picturesque place to visit for anyone staying in one of our holiday cottages in Devon. The beach is divided into north and south, and it’s about nine miles from Kingsbridge facing towards Start Bay. There is level access to the sand from North Hallsands car park, although it is small so keep that in mind in busier months, although there’s also another small car park five minutes away for South Hallsands. You might want to note that there aren’t any facilities or toilets close to the beach, which does mean that it’s fantastically peaceful and an experience that’s all about the natural environment, which ultimately is what we all love about a Devon break! For those bringing their four legged friends with them, the beach is completely dog friendly, welcoming them all year round, so just don’t get carried away with all that fun in the sand and get cut off by the tide in all the excitement. The sand stretches a fair distance at low tide and we wouldn’t want you to get wet!

Great little beach, my furry companion had the best time here. She couldn't contain her excitement. Amazing for us both watching and listening to the sounds of the sea.

December 2023

Really nice walk from Beesands.

October 2023

Lovely walk from Beesands. Takes about half an hour.

June 2023

lovely beach, I walked through there twice on my way along the coast path, really peaceful, the lost fishermans village is also worth visiting just a short walk from the beach

May 2022

Great walk up to Hallsands, interesting piece of history.

April 2022

Lovely little place, great to take a picnic as no facilities but that's part of its charm. Wonderful views of Start Bay and a great base to walk to Start Point and beyond or to Beesands. Well worth a visit.

September 2020

Gorgeous beach, but be careful if you have a dog that likes to run as our Border Collie got very sore paws on the pebbles.

Beesands
Beesands
(3 miles)

(45)

Close to Kingsbridge and a favourite amongst residents and holiday makers in the South West, Beesands is a wonderful mile-long shingle beach surrounded by fields and a freshwater lake. You get a real flavour of the West Country here with fresh crab sandwiches for sale nearby and lots of Devon holiday cottages within walking distance to make it really convenient. The beach has won awards from the Marine Conservation Society as well as having The Blue Flag marker to attest to its excellence and high standards, so families and swimmers can be reassured. The beach is popular for surfing and body boarding amongst other water sports including fishing, so tackle is on sale close by. You can pick up light bites at nearby cafes as and when you’re ready, making it easy to spend the whole day running around on the sand and enjoying your seaside holiday to the max. Beesands is very much a beach for everyone thanks to its convenient location, easy and free road parking along most of the beach, level access, and the toilets, cafes and pubs close by. Dogs are also welcome on the beach throughout the year so the whole family can enjoy it!

Gorgeous coastal walk from South Hallsands to Beesands. Not too strenuous for my mini dacshund. Well worth a visit with rocks / coves at the far end.

Beautiful location with lovely coastal walks in both directions ! 2 very good eating places too !

September 2023

Stunning beach, fantastic sunset.

August 2023

Great place for an evening drink - beach not very suitable for children .

August 2023

We stayed for a week in a house opposite the beach in Beesands. The beach is a pebble beach and is very quiet. There is no lifeguard but there are locals there everyday with their boats so I am sure they would let you know if the conditions were unsafe. There is a fish and chip shop/restaurant and 1 pub restaurant - both serving lovely food and offer very friendly service. There is very little nearby so you do need a car to get around. Nearest supermarket was around 20-30 minute car ride away. The kids went in the sea almost every day and had the best time! They wore full wetsuits and water shoes which I thoroughly recommend as it is a pebble beach, and the kids got stung by a jelly fish when they paddled without wetsuits. When the tide was in, or coming in, the kids felt safer as they were in their depth. When the tide is out, there is a ledge which drops quite sharply. I am not a fan of sand so sitting on my camping chair on the pebble beach was bliss for me. We even spotted seals on most days! The locals with their boats didn't seem too friendly but we loved watching them take their boats out and bring them back in again. It was fascinating. I would have loved to ask them more about the beach, tides and coastal erosion but they didn't seem very approachable. However, I do appreciate that they must find tourists a little irritating. I would absolutely go back to Beesands for a holiday. It is my idea of blissful relaxation.

August 2023

Friendly, quiet location and shingle beach. Nice beach walk to Torcross at low tide. Pub/restaurant and Britannia restaurant and takeaway were very good. Very narrow roads to Beesands from turning off main road, but enjoyable holiday

June 2023

Just lovely. Excellent food at Britannia on the beach and they also have an excellent takeaway

May 2023

Great beach.

September 2022

Pebble beach. Sea crystal clear

August 2022

Beautiful location, stunning views!

August 2022

Pleasant place to visit

July 2022

Absolute delight to stay in this quiet little seaside village! Mostly holiday let properties nowadays but still some locals around to talk to about the history of the area. The village is extremely clean including the beach considering it is all dog friendly! Popular with local & travelling anglers mainly at weekends I also fished to some degree every day of our stay. We will be going back soon!

July 2022

Had a lovely walk. Beautiful setting.

June 2022

lovely location, enjoyed many morning walks along the beach, and caught 14 mackerel. The road access is not the best, drive slowly, you cannot do anything else, and hey who's in a rush on holiday

May 2022

Loved Beesands, we stayed in one of the cottages for a week and enjoyed the peace and quiet and strolling along the beach, very dog friendly to!

May 2022

loved it here

November 2021

Gorgeous stretch of beach - we loved finding pebbles to take home! The walks to Torcross and Hallsands and an absolute must for stunning views

October 2021

Lovely clean dog-friendly beach and an easy walk from Clover Cottage and over to Torcross too

September 2021

Lovely quiet and dog friendly beach with good facilities. Good place to walk from to nearby beaches.

July 2021

The actual usable beach is a fair walk from the village ( parking not allowed as the beach fronting the village no longer exists due to flood defences

June 2021

much less busy than most local beaches (because it is shingle) but great for kids above toddler age. lovely walks in both directions, eg to Torcross for chips or to Start Point for views. Easy parking and a good beach shack cafe and take away

June 2021

Nice village on the coast

May 2021

Lovely area and stay

May 2021

Accidentally burnt the garden table offered to pay as we had booked for 2021 for our honeymoon the owners accepted our offer but refused our stay for honeymoon said they were proud owners hey accidents happen we r nature adults n had to do alit of cleaning n change light bulbs in our arrival so thanks to the owners it completely messed up our honeymoon how selfish urn that's part of letting your cottage accidents happen n we did not have to offer to pay be warned don't damage anything

December 2020

14 Beesands is a great property. About 10 feet away from the beach/ sea wall. Pub 20 paces away. Lovely walks on the doorstep. Fabulous sunsets and seals swimming past. Who could ask for more. Well equipped cottage, very comfy beds cosy and warm

October 2020

The most wonderful little fishing village- narrow lanes on approach so drive carefully- but it's worth it. Lovely shingle beach and stunning views across Start Bay. Two great eateries- Britannia and The Cricket Inn are worth a visit. Beesands is just beautiful, I love it there.

September 2020

Amazing location right on the beach. We spent a week in Beesands and found the property to be perfect for our big group - plenty of space for everyone to relax and a very well appointed kitchen. Would highly recommend.

September 2020

Beautiful setting and lovely property decorated to a high standard, well equipped and perfect place for a getaway to peace and quiet. Short distance to the beach. Would definitely return. We had a super weekend at this property celebrating a family birthday

January 2020

Beautiful relaxing place to spend time.

November 2019

Lovely little beach, nice quiet location and free parking a bonus

August 2019

Worth the uphill/downhill walk along the coast path. Lovely spot.

August 2019

Easy to park, good food options. plenty of room for everyone.

August 2019

I love Beesands . The only sad thing is even more people have found out about it, 10 years since my last visit. Sadly the sea has removed the road handy for parking and is gradually eroding the cliff edges. Not as quiet as it used to be but the attractions of two nice eating places have probably increased the footfall.

June 2019

I've been coming to Beesands since I was 2 years old (61 now!). Not every year since adulthood but still can't stay away. Its an ideal location for those who want to get away from it all. Its close enough to Kingsbridge and within easy reach of Dartmouth , Salcombe and Brixham. The locals are very friendly and will always be up for a chat. Its almost tempting to keep this little coastal secret to myself!

October 2018

Bit scary driving down to the beach due to the narrow road but worth it when you got there. Had fish and chips and ate them on the tables that were provided while looking out to sea.

September 2018

Had a wonderful meal in the beach cafe .

July 2018

We've been coming to this general area for over 20 years now and have stayed in many of the surrounding villages . This was the first time we'd stayed in Beesands - but we had walked through it on our coastal walks on many, many occasions. We both loved the peaceful charm of the place - secluded , tranquil and away from it all . But unlike Hallsands (next village along) , it does have two places where you can eat ( The cricket Inn and the Britannia0)and they are both very good . The beach is great - shingle - but really uncrowded in June . ( We were lucky with the weather) and on a clear, sunny day - it is quite magical. ( What a shame the water is so freezing cold !!) This stretch of coastline is stunning - and even if you do no other walks - walk over to Hallsands and read about the old village that was washed away in January 1917 - or just drink in the stunning views . I love this part of Devon and it never fails to take my breath away when you stand on the coast path near the lighthouse and look back across Start Bay to Hallsands , Beesands , Torr Cross , and over towards Dartmouth. Wonderful.

June 2018

Beautiful stoney beach with views of Start Point Lighthouse. Tasty fish and chips available, popular pub and public toilets.

June 2018

Lovely place, good food and very dog friendly :-)

March 2018

Britannia Fish - Great fish - always fresh and lovely family run business. A must for anyone who likes eating good fish!

May 2017

Ideal for quiet and peaceful holiday with two good restaurants both of which are dog friendly.

Gara Rock Beach
Gara Rock Beach
(3 miles)

(12)

A short ferry ride over the estuary from Salcombe to East Portlemouth, followed by a scenic walk along the coast (around 40 minutes depending on how speedy you are), will lead you to a dramatic headland and beach café known as Gara Rock. With panoramic views of the sea, the café is open for teas, cakes, lunch, and afternoon tea before you descend to Gara Rock Beach below. The beach is a sandy cove flanked by rocks, and can also be reached by parking at the Mill Bay car park which is around two miles away on foot. The beauty of this beach is that it is only accessible either on foot or by boat, so it does have a wonderful sense of escapism alongside its rugged splendour. Although it is a little bit of a climb back up to the café, the proximity of food and toilets means that you can set up camp here for most of the day, dipping into the water as and when you choose if the weather is warm enough. Alternatively, it’s the perfect place for a pit stop if you’re spending the day walking along the coast path towards Prawle Point and Dartmouth beyond. Dogs are allowed on the beach but not in high season, so keep that in mind, and while it’s a slightly tricky beach to get to it’s worth the effort… maybe just see if you can get a takeaway brownie and a cup of tea from the café to keep you going!

A bit tricky getting down to the beach but worth it.

September 2023

Super dog friendly beach and the children had a lovely time too, it was pretty busy but it was a bank holiday!

June 2022

VERY PEACEFULL AND NO CROWDS

September 2021

Superb location, excellent service. We were unable to book beforehand but were fortunate to be able to secure a table.

September 2021

Beautiful sandy and pebbly cove... we spent 2 gorgeous days there with our dog! Be prepared for steep climb back to Gara Rock restaurant but worth it!

July 2021

After driving an hour through Devon drizzle we were not impressed to be turned away because we weren't guests. "or you can sit outside and have coffee from the Garavan". Lesson learned: Don't go unless you're booked.

October 2020

We had a beautiful meal with stunning views at Gara Rock. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was divine. We also had spa treatments for the group, who left feeling relaxed and radiant.

September 2020

Lovely secluded beach, dog friendly and easy to get to.

July 2020

Go there for the coastal walk. Fantastic. Stop at the hotel for a coffee, the views are stunning

September 2019

A lovely beach (although quite "weedy"), almost deserted the morning we were there, and well worth the tricky path down and the steep climb back

August 2019

My favourite beach in the country, nothing run of the mill here, lovely views

July 2019

Lovely beach. We arrived early after a steep walk down the cliff path. Had the beach initially to ourselves! Starts to get busier as the day goes on.

July 2018

Mill Bay
(4 miles)

(29)

A sandy beach on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary, at low tide Mill Bay stretches all the way up the coastline to East Portlemouth beach. It has the most wonderful view of Salcombe itself and is popular with everyone, especially families, because of the large swathes of sand on which you can set up camp for the day and enjoy safe, clean swimming conditions. Parking is limited, so the best way to get to it is either by boat or by catching the East Portlemouth Ferry from Salcombe and strolling along. That way you can also nip past The Venus Café by the slipway to pick ice creams, sandwiches and refreshments before settling in for the day. There are rock pools to explore, sandcastles to build and swimming to be done, just make sure you’re careful of any boats coming in and out of the beach. Dogs are welcome at Mill Bay all year round, and it makes an excellent spot to run around with them whatever time of the year. Like the other beaches along this stretch of coast, Mill Bay makes for an ideal place to spend the day right into the evening, although it is a little stroll to the nearest facilities. It’s also a lovely beach to meander across en route towards Gara Rock or on a longer walk along the coast path.

October 2023

Stunning! Great car park, perfect for dogs, at low tide you can walk along the beach to east portlemouth and Venus cafe.

September 2023

Lovely quiet beach, clean beach & sea

July 2023

Lovely place to spend some time.

July 2023

Lovely clean beach with great views

May 2023

Lovely clean beach, easily accessible from our holiday cottage.

July 2022

Bit of a walk but well worth it - spacious beach, fabulous views and shallow waters.

June 2022

Brilliant beach 3 miles from the cottage

June 2022

Gorgeous little Bay close to where we were staying our dog. Loved fetching his ball in and out the water. Very pretty spot.

April 2022

Lovely beach and you can walk to Gara rock from here and along beach to the ferry crossing to salcombe

March 2022

Great beach. Bumpy access road as sand has blown across it. Slightly marred by 1-2 selfish dog owners who have left their calling cards

November 2021

We were lucky enough to spend 3 days on this beautiful beach. Fabulous place ??

September 2021

Fantastic beach one of the best in the area. Have to get to car park (National Trust) very early if you don't want to carry all your stuff to the beach.

September 2021

We attempted to drive to Mill Bay car park- not a good idea in August! No parking spaces, no turning points. We tried another day, parking at Gara Rock and asking down the bridle path. We have a disabled granddaughter, the walk down was manageable but the return walk was much more difficult. Beautiful beach and worth the walk.

September 2021

Lovely, clean, sandy beach in wonderful location with beautiful views and easy access from Salcombe via the East Portlemouth ferry.

August 2021

Lovely beach, clear water

July 2021

Lovely beach for children to play on.

June 2021

Favourite beach going back to my childhood. The road to it was closed due to a land slip in January. Talked to the workmen who said it was due to reopen November 2020.

October 2020

Lovely beach but this year overrun with people arriving by motor boat- so it felt a little worrying for kids to swim out among them,(and frankly it spoilt the view) and engine noise/fumes at the end of the day as everyone left!

September 2020

Wonderful

September 2019

I endorse all of the other favourable comments and emphasise the urgent need to make the lavatories hygienic. In fact all of the public conveniences are anything but convenient.

September 2019

Lovely beach, handy to have little food caravan selling crepes, drinks and ice cream, good quality too. The toilets were disgusting though and should have been cleaned more regularly, also waste bins overflowing.

August 2019

Great place for a day on the beach. Safe and dog friendly

August 2019

Lovely large sandy beach, perfect for young children who want to play in the strem and build dams, or play in the sea without large waves!

July 2019

Great beach

October 2018

A fabulous beach. Especially great fun at low tide for a water loving Labrador. We enjoyed our visits here. We also loved the passenger ferry from here to Salcombe. Beautiful beach.

October 2018

Beautiful beach lovely and clean. Small car park free to N.T. members. Highly recommended. Drawback no immediate café available. Venus café nearest but a trek if not mobile.

September 2018

Lovely beach well worth a visit. Dog friendly as well. Well worth the £7-50 national trust car parking fee.

July 2018

amazing beach, dog friendly, only downside is the toilets near the National Trust hut are very poor

July 2018

April 2024

Despite stormy wild wet weather all week, the family had the most wonderful stay at 1 Ivy Cove and we all agreed we definitely want to come back again next year. Thank you Toad Hall.

August 2023

We love it at this property. There were quite a few blue bottle flys this time inside on arrival but we sprayed and cleared them out.

November 2022

Absolutely and will definitely stay again just a few little pointers but wouldn’t stop us staying here.

September 2022

Love it here, the water issue was fixed really quickly by a REALLY nice plumber.... give him a payrise!!! :-)

September 2022

As above. We love it every time.

August 2022

We very much enjoyed our stay, so much so we have already booked a week in May 2023! A very special cottage in a very special location.

July 2022

Amazing location! This is our third time here. Beautiful coastline and so peaceful.

June 2022

Prior to this idyllic holiday I had previously stayed in one of the cottages 50 years ago. The location, access, quiet privacy of lovely Lannacombe were exactly as I remembered . The cottage on the other hand had undergone a tasteful transformation from a very rudimentary basic dwelling to a lovely spacious Comfortable home. I will be Returning as soon As possible. I simply love it. Thank you all .

Thank you for your lovely review and being such a great guest, we hope to welcome you back soon!

- The Toad Hall Team

June 2022

Fantastic House and Location, really well equipped overall, great standard of cleanliness and hygiene. Would recommend !

September 2021

we enjoyed every minute. Comments above. One tiny improvment would be if the housekeeping team could text when they have finished as we were itching to get in and have a swim!

August 2021

Absolutely loved our stay

July 2021

This is the most wonderful cottage in a stunning location. A real treat.

July 2021

Absolutely spotlessly clean! Kitchen well equipped. Perfect holiday cottage. Our second time here and have booked again for next year. We love it!

June 2021

I have been staying at either 1 or 2 Ivy Cove for 57 years, since being a child. My children and now my grandchildren are enjoying the delights of this special and delightful location

April 2021

Utter bliss. I

October 2020

Fab location & comfortably furnished. Had a relaxed week

October 2020

It was idyllic. The location is of course outstanding, and the views enough to sustain the spirit without else. But the cottage was entirely comfortable and a welcoming refuge when we could not be outside. Really appreciated the generous spirit with which it is run: comfortable beds, good linen, plenty of hot water, lots of cupboards and hangers, a dryer, ample crockery etc, plenty of lights (amazing how many houses have inadequate bedside lamps), woodburner that worked; some supplies, including loo paper and cleaning stuff; the games room. It felt welcoming and extremely comfortable, and as if we were being allowed into someone's home. Thank you!

September 2020

Absolutely. Location brilliant. Warm and cosy cottage. Clean, safe beach. Good walking area.

September 2020

Again it didn’t worry me, but others may like a sharp knife in the kitchen, some non stick pans with a bit of non stick still in tact and some matching wine glasses.

September 2020

Great place

July 2020

Amazing place. We did not leave the cottage. Just a superb holiday. Loved it!

October 2019

Excellent property in lovely location with plenty to see and do and very good pubs restaurants etc.

July 2019

One of the most beautiful spots we have yet been.

April 2019

Perfect location. How is it possible to have a sandy beach to yourselves, in Devon, on a hot bank holiday?! Really spacious cottage and well laid out. Beach in your back garden, brilliant pub within walking distance (and it’s a lovely walk) and a welcoming cottage with fantastic sea views to return to. We decided to book again in October.......but already booked.

February 2019

Wonderful birthday weekend for families ...beach hikes to pigs nose ...cricket inn seals swimming wow...can't wait to come back ...Was hoping to book during summer holidays but fully booked...October looking possible

October 2018

Enjoyed every minute. How Toad Hall produces such good weather is unbelievable! Thank you.

August 2018

Pretty much perfect! Loved it!

June 2018

Wonderful position. Well equipped and thoroughly njoyed. Will be back.

August 2017

We had a lovely and very enjoyable week. A few notes.. I think 4 pm is too late for soonest can arrive... Considering we need to leave by 10 pm on day of departure, that is the best part of a day off our holiday. Usually places can take you from about 2. Why should it take 6 hours to clean? The wine and milk in the fridge was very much appreciated after a long journey. Thank you.

June 2017

We have been going to 1 Ivy Cove since I was a child - over 50 years and always love our stay

May 2017

It is a shame that short breaks are unavailable during gaps in occupation , as would probably come down more often. Regards, Mark Shaw.

August 2016

Thank you so much for a wonderful, magical stay. The setting and views are paradise. The cottage is beautifully done out and equipped to the highest standard - for once the property outshone the photographs on the website by a long way. Best holiday ever! Five stars!! The Fattouki family.

August 2013

One thing that would really improve our cottage would be a microwave cooker as the electric cooker can be quite slow and tricky. If you want to get hungry kids just off the beach fed, a microwave would really help.

Thank you for your comments and you'll be pleased to learn that there is now a microwave installed in the utility area. We hope to see you and the kids again soon. The Toad Hall team.
