Perched on rugged cliffs overlooking the Atlantic in North Cornwall, Tintagel is steeped in myth and legend. Surrounded by stunning, dramatic scenery, the historic ruins of Tintagel Castle and beautiful beaches, it’s no surprise that holidays in Tintagel are so popular.

Meaning ‘village on a mountain’, Tintagel is set high on the north coast of Cornwall between Padstow and Bude. The village is famed for its mystical clifftop castle which, legend has it, was the birthplace of King Arthur. No holiday in Tintagel is complete without exploring the Norman castle ruins, half on the mainland and half on an island, which are now maintained by English Heritage. After learning all about King Arthur and the castle’s history, you can follow the footpath down to a little beach below the island called Castle Cove, home to Merlin’s Cave. Not only is Tintagel Castle and its legendary past fascinating, it also offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views in Cornwall - no wonder it’s one of the most visited places in Britain!

There are many more things to do in Tintagel than visit the castle. Back in Tintagel village you’ll find King Arthur’s Great Halls, an impressive granite building dedicated to Arthurian legend, as well as the National Trust’s Old Post Office, a wonky-roofed medieval building with over 600 years of history to explore. There’s no shortage of shops, pubs and restaurants in Tintagel, from quirky gift shops, fudge and Cornish pasties, to traditional pub grub and Cornish cream teas.

Our favourite thing to do in Tintagel is head to the South West Coast Path. The walks along North Cornwall’s coast are stunning with gigantic headlands, crystal-clear turquoise waters and an abundance of wildlife - if you’re lucky you can often spot seals! With the coast path passing along the edge of the village, Tintagel is perfect for walking holidays and dog-friendly getaways. Follow the coast path for four miles to the pretty fishing village of Boscastle, or head the other direction to reach picture-perfect Port Isaac, home of Doc Martin.

There’s no shortage of beautiful beaches near Tintagel, including some of the sweeping surf beaches Cornwall is famed for. Nearby you’ll find Trebarwith Strand and Tregardock where you can ride the Atlantic waves, as well as an abundance of pretty coves, such as Castle Cove and Bossiney. Within a 30 minute drive you’ll reach the beaches of Polzeath, Daymer Bay in Rock and Bude.

From stunning natural beauty to mythical kings and castles, coastal walks to world-class surf and golden beaches to rugged moorland, a holiday in Tintagel makes a great base to experience the best bits of North Cornwall.

Parking for up to 3 cars at the top of the driveway, beside the house, with turning area.

Fantastic!!!. Absolutely outstanding views

September 2021

Brilliant place to visit with so much history. It is a very steep walk down which you do not get told, we always took a short cut across the first bridge on your left that you will come to this will take you on to the church path which is fantastic this is a must to see the door is left open for tourist there are little booklets telling you all a bout it for a small fee in a donation box. If you want the Tintagel Castle head to the right of the opening. If you feel You can not walk to far catch the Land Rover's that only cost a couple of pounds you will find them on the top of the hill next to Wootans Pub. If you want to know more about the castle buy the book in the shop before you entre, it will talk you through step by step on where you are in the Castle and what sort of age the ruins are. Don't forget to check high times to visit Merlins Cave. Last thing for me to say is you will not be dissapointed

September 2021

Great place to visit and take it all in...

August 2021

Much as we would have liked to try out the new bridge, we felt £16 each was a bit steep for the privilege and got a good enough view from the grounds of the big hotel above.

Museum of Witchcraft
(3 miles)

(2)

A magic experience to enjoy while you’re on holiday in Cornwall, the Museum of Witchcraft is in the village of Boscastle and was the creation of Cecil Williams whose fascination with the subject started in childhood.  He set up the Cornish museum in 1960, saying it was three miles from a prehistoric maze stone carved into a living rock face, ‘proof that from ancient times man and his magic making with the world of spirit were active in this area’.  Today you can visit to explore the collections or enjoy seasonal events such as candlelit evenings and Halloween at the museum.

Bossiney Cove Beach
(Less than a mile)

(3)

Just a mile along the road from Tintagel lies Bossiney Cove, a beautiful hidden gem which is completely covered at high tide. Access to the beach is via a footpath over some farmland and then by steep steps down to the small sandy beach. At the right hand side of the cove there is a great cave to explore that is 60 feet high at the entrance, also see if you can spot the elephant rock hidden in the cliff face! This beach is dog friendly all year and parking can be found in a nearby layby at the top.

February 2020

Tintagel Beach
(2 miles)

In the shadow of Tintagel Castle, Tintagel Beach is small and often overlooked, barely accessible via a scrabble down the cliff path.  To the north of the beach there’s a waterfall and to the south is Merlin's Cave, a 300ft long tunnel passing under Tintagel Island and castle that’s only accessible at low tide.  Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, and the beauty of the place is its remoteness – just you, the beach and the sea, so there aren’t any facilities nearby basically.

Trebarwith Strand
(3 miles)

(6)

Two miles from Tintagel, Trebarwith Strand Beach on the north Coast of Cornwall is easily accessible and is owned by the National Trust.  A long stretch of sand, it’s backed by flat rocks and steep cliffs, but check the tides before you visit because people often get cut off in the summer months.  Once there, there are caves to explore and rock pools containing a wealth of sea life.  It’s been the setting for a number of films in its time, but these days it’s all about swimming (when lifeguards are on duty between May and September) and exploring.  Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, and there are two car parks – the main one is a bit of a walk away, and a smaller one is closer to the beach.  There’s also a handful of roadside parking spaces.

Great beach, you will need to check the tide times though The Port William is a good pub overlooking the beach with great views, there is also a small cafe

September 2023

Beautiful rocky cove at the where you arrive. You have to come close to low tide to explore beyond.

April 2023

This is a fabulous beach with a nice cafe, a pub and shop and toilet facilities. You need a book of the tide times so that you can make the most of your visit here.

August 2022

Our favourite beach if you can work round the tide times!

August 2022

Beautiful clean beach, pleased that it is a dog friendly one.

July 2022

Another great place to run the dog when the tide is out. Took excellent photos here at sunset. Coast path walk from here to Tintagel is relatively easy going with great views.

September 2019

Tregardock Beach
(4 miles)

Best known as a surf beach, Tregardock Beach is only accessible by footpath, which offers beautiful views of the water and Port Isaac as you head down.  It is quite a stroll and the terrain is bumpy, so it’s not an ideal beach to visit with children.  The path can also get quite muddy, so keep an eye on the weather.  There’s a seasonal ban on dogs from Easter to September, and there aren’t any facilities in the immediate vicinity of the beach.  When the tide goes out, several small beaches become one long stretch of sand, and there’s a waterfall cascading down the cliffs at the back of the beach as well as caves to explore, so it really is a little paradise hidden in the landscape.  Because it’s not easy to access, it’s usually quiet at this beach, but parking along the roadside near the farm at Treligga is very limited, so it’s a good idea to head over as early as possible and make sure you don’t get cut off at high tide.

August 2023

Our jaws dropped as we approached St Brychan up the drive. Brochure pictures don’t do it justice. Lovely Arts and Crafts house full of antiques and paintings we kept revisiting. St Brychan excellently equipped smart and clean. Welcome pack a nice surprise. Thank you.”

July 2023

We had a lovely week, though the weather was windy, cool and overcast most of the week. The sunloungers arriving was a nice touch, though unfortunately we didn’t have chance to use them. Location is lovely, though the approach road needs very careful driving. It was really peaceful and comfortable and we enjoyed spending time with the family in spacious, clean, well-equipped accommodation. Toad Hall cottages has served us very well and we would book again through you. Any chance of a loyalty discount next time? ?

Thankyou for taking the time to write a lovely review. We also love St.Brychan for it beautiful location and surrounding and it's such a well equipped house, perfect for making memories.

September 2022

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at St Brychan. The location is excellent, close to Tintagel and Boscastle and right on St Nectans Glen which is evidently a popular attraction! Very private location at the end of the private road. It's located in the glen with lots of trees around, but the property still gets plenty of sun on the garden. Lots of footpaths nearby, including straight from the house without needing to drive - it's possible to walk to Tintagel and Boscastle off road for most of the way. The house is really nice with a lot of character and plenty of space, and well equipped. It was modernised fairly recently so the bathrooms/kitchens are all to a good modern standard, with new carpets/flooring etc. The wifi signal is very fast and mobile receptivity on O2 was excellent. A large TV is provided in the lounge which has freeview and netflix. Gardens are nice with several different areas to use. Overall we were really pleased with our stay - one of our best holidays!

Thank you for your kind comments, the owners will be thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the house!

Wonderful house and amazing gardens and location. Davidstow airfield experience worth a visit. The Old Inn in St Breward is excellent with portions well above average!

September 2021

We enjoyed our stay in the house and the garden. The issues mentioned above did not impact on our enjoyment of the facilities in the house and of the use of the large garden. If circumstances permitted we would be very pleased to visit again. We loved the area and visited many places during our holiday. A great house to stay in.

July 2021

Lovely touches, like the flowers. As there were 2 pianists amounts us, we loved making use of the grand, in particular. Super TV which came in useful with Euros and Wimbledon and as most evenings were rainy! Loved the croquet pitch!
