Where to catch the surf

Yes, your lodge may be set in the heart of the North Devon countryside, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the coast! Kentisbury Grange lies within easy reach of some of the region’s best beaches so whether you’re in search of quiet country life or the buzz of a holiday in the surf and on the sand, a stay here offers you the best of both worlds.

Woolacombe Bay  (20 minutes’ drive)

This seaside village is best known for its wonderful three-mile-long beach. Ranked among the best in the UK, its waves attract surfers and water sports lovers, while the beach itself is popular with families and beachgoers. The village has a relaxed atmosphere, with shops, cafes and restaurants, plus being within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) means you’ll have epic coastal views, and a landscape ideal for hiking and exploring.

Saunton Sands (30 minutes’ drive)

A stunning beach that stretches for over three miles and is popular for beach lovers, surfers and families. Backed by large sand dunes which from part of the Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it’s a natural haven for wildlife including resident and migratory birds so if you’re a nature enthusiast it’s a wonderful place to visit.
This beach also welcomes dogs all year round!

Croyde Bay (about 35 minutes’ drive)

One of North Devon’s most popular beaches, this beautiful stretch of sand has a wild natural beauty and is well known for its consistent surf breaks which attract surfers from all corners of the globe. Bordered by dunes and surrounded by countryside, it offers a relaxed atmosphere for lazy beach days. A beach café overlooking the bay makes a great spot for unwinding in the sunshine while enjoying a bite to eat as well as terrific sea views.

The Coach House Restaurant

Make one of the highlights of your stay at Kentisbury Grange, a delicious meal at the site’s very own brasserie restaurant, The Coach House. Known for its outstanding service and beautiful British cuisine, the food here is stunning and the presentation faultless, with only the best, locally-sourced seasonal produce and ingredients used.

Let’s start with our absolute favourite menu – the Bottomless Brunch! Which is exactly what it says it is…
Served between 10am and 2pm every Saturday and at *£29.95 per person, you’ll be treated to a lovely selection of hot and cold drinks including snazzy coffees, fizz, cocktails (or mocktails) or beer. There are various dishes to choose from too like Eggs Royale, Florentine and Benedict, Smoked Salmon and Scambled Eggs, Crepes with Greek Yoghurt, Honey and Berries, and Sourdough Toast with Spinach, Chilli, Pine Nuts and Field Mushrooms, as well as Overnight Oats, Granola and Yoghurt Pots and Fresh Fruit Salad.

Of course, you can opt for the restaurant’s a’la carte breakfast menu instead and enjoy your choice of dishes like a Full English or Full Vegetarian.
Lunch consists of an A La Carte menu Monday to Saturday with a variety of nibbles, starters, mains and sides to choose from like Smoked Nuts, Tempura Battered Prawns, Exmoor Beef Burger and Beer Battered Cod, and a three-course roast on Sundays with ’Endless’ Roast Topside Beef, Pan Fried Chicken Breast and ’ Couscous, Pine Nut and Tomato Nut Roast.

You can’t visit Devon without indulging in a cream tea though, and The Coach serves one of the finest in the area with its selection of freshly baked scones, cakes and sandwiches.

Where to find adventure

Exmoor Zoo (under 10 minutes’ drive)

A lovely day out for adults and kids of all ages, Exmoor Zoo is under 10 minutes’ drive from Kentisbury Grange. The zoo spans 12 acres of lush countryside, with outdoor picnic and play areas. There are of course many wonderful animals to see too like lemurs, meerkats, various monkey breeds, and big cats including cheetahs, caracal and the black leopard.

Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (under 10 minutes’ drive)

This National Trust property is a fascinating glimpse into the area’s heritage, with a beautiful Regency mansion surrounded by gardens, woods, and lakes. The National Trust Carriage Museum, housed in the stables, displays a collection of over 50 horse-drawn carriages, showcasing the history of transportation. Visitors can explore the historical aspects of Arlington Court, with the mansion and the museum providing glimpses into cultural and technological aspects of the past.

Visit Ilfracombe (20 minutes’ drive)

The delightful coastal town of Ilfracombe with its pretty harbour, pastel painted cottages and coastal views makes for a wonderful day out. Surrounded by dramatic clifftop scenery, the town rests right on the South West Coast Path so you’ll be able to enjoy a scenic walk before settling down for lunch in one of its fab restaurants.

Quince Honey Farm (25 minutes’ drive)

Step into the world of bees and honey production at this unique attraction which is set in a beautiful corner of the Devonshire countryside. The farm is a really lovely day out for children and adults with a Play Hive indoor/outdoor play area, exhibits, guided tours, and live demonstrations. There’s also the award-winning Nectary Restaurant where you can indulge in a Devon cream tea or light bite.
