Lymington is a wonderful base to enjoy birdwatching, we have seen the return of Great and Little Egrets, Avocets and the latest arrivals Spoonbills. Marsh Harriers soar over the reed beds at Keyhaven and, if you’re very lucky, you may even see a White-tailed Eagle, recently re-introduced as part of a breeding programme on the Isle of Wight. In the summer, Little and Common Terns nest and you may be treated to their spectacular dives into the sea to catch their prey. Dartford and Cetti’s warblers can be seen (or heard) in the gorse bushes right next to the path. The autumn and winter see the arrival of thousands of migrating wildfowl from Scandinavia and Greenland. You will see rafts of Brent Geese and ducks including Wigeon, Teal, Pintails and Gadwalls.
Lymington’s ancient charter market lines the High Street every Saturday and is a must visit, with a wide selection of stalls and crafts. Visitors love this beautiful, Georgian market town that’s also a popular sailing resort. Lymington boasts three marinas and was the training ground for local hero Sir Ben Ainslie, you can see the golden letter box at the bottom of the high street, painted in recognition of his success with a fifth Gold Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games. Lymington is one of the largest towns in the New Forest and has a key role in the life of the area. This charming town is packed full of history dating back to the Norman Conquest, and is an important port on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent. Human habitation in the Lymington area dates back to the Iron Age, and a 6th Century BC hill fort known locally as Buckland Rings can still be seen today. As with many other towns and villages in the area, Lymington thrived during the Norman Conquest, thanks to its key location on the south coast.
If you want to leave your car at home and come by train, Lymington Rail line is a branch off the main Waterloo to Weymouth line. Once here, you’ll find regular buses with stops all over the New Forest and coastline.
There are lots of places to walk and amble in and around Lymington, these include characterful cobbled streets leading down to the town quay and harbour – a great place to relax and watch harbour life - fishing boats land their haul, yachts and leisure boats coming in and out.
There are lots of town events, activities and day trips from Lymington including fishing trips, boat and sailing charters, canoeing and kayaking, diving trips, mini cruises and ferry over to the Isle of Wight with your car or as a foot passenger.
Saturdays in the high street are a hive of activity, with a weekly street market selling everything from plants, clothes and household goods to home-made cakes, fruit and veg and a whole lot more. Shopping is great with a high street brands mixed with an interesting and eclectic mix of independent retailers and boutiques. There are a few supermarkets and specialist food shops for provisions to take back to your cottage, including one that makes their own home-made dishes and desserts and freezes them.
Lymington also has a number of really good eateries in and around the town, with the main concentration being around the high street. Lanes of Lymington serves superb food and also runs a cookery school. The Elderflower, whose chef/proprietor hails from the famous 5* Chewton Glen Hotel is superb.
During the warmer months you can relax in the bandstand gardens and enjoy some free musical entertainment. A few minutes’ further on are Lymington Sea Water Baths, the oldest of their kind in the UK, dating back to 1833. A short walk further on is the start of Keyhaven Nature Reserve. Well worth going to if you like birds, wildlife and natural beauty complimented with wonderful views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.
There is parking for one car on the pavement on Barfields, next to the small extension. A public car parking clock is also provided for your stay (an advanced deposit of £40.00 is payable as a refundable deposit- to be taken on booking or in advance over the phone). Great place to eat, Had Ham, egg and chips and a pint of shandy lager and paid £6-20. Great service, great food which was hot and freshy cooked.

A well run Wetherspoons pub, light and airy unlike some of them! good value food and drink, pleasant staff and the food comes in good time, staff around clearing tables and keeping the place tidy.

The Angel & Blue Pig
(Less than a mile)
(14)
A stylish and elegant gastro pub on the high street, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Lots of wooden beams, bare brick walls, large fire place and pretty soft furnishings - there’s also outside seating. The Angel and Blue Pig specialize in steaks, which receive great reviews. The main menu changes each month and is supplemented by daily specials. All the dishes are creative, varied and beautifully presented. A delightful spot for a drink or bite to eat.

September 2020
Friendly staff, good food, comfortable surroundings
August 2020
Very disappointing. So much so that I submitted a complaint to customer service via email and the response was very unsatisfactory too! My advice would be to avoid.
November 2019
Visited this pub whilst on holiday. My wife and I had the intention of eating there, although we had not booked. We ordered 2 drinks (beer) which I could not drink at all. I took them back to the bar with the intention of asking them to be replaced. I waited for 15 minutes. During this time the 2 bar staff who were on duty walked past several times whilst serving other customers. Neither showed any interest in finding out what my problem was or that they knew I was there. In the end I left the beer on the bar and walked out. I have visited Lymington several times in the past and hope to holiday there again in the future, but I will never go into this place again.
May 2019
Very disappointing and long delay in seating us on arrival despite having a reservation.
January 2018
We loved this pub! We went with the kids for a quick drink around lunchtime and then came back in the evening without the kids. Great atmosphere, well furnished, and great drinks on offer. The menu looked fantastic too, however, we didn't get to sample it! We'll definitely go again if we return to Lymington.
July 2017
Perfect for lunch. They have a £6 lunchtime menu which offers excellent value for money. I had the wild mushroom linguine. Delicious and good sized portion. My husband had the burger which comes with fries and homemade ketchup. Staff are friendly and chatty too which is nice.

September 2023
Great little museum. Very informative about the history of the area and even our teenagers enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit.
August 2022
A bit of a hidden gem really, very good and informative displays in a well laid out and spacious environment, we particularly liked the community involvement with a group of local children very actively enjoying the surroundings, the coffee shop and the engaging and helpful staff. If anything the museum could sell itself to the public better - we nearly didn't go in as there was little to explain what was inside other than the art galleries
May 2022
Wonderful art exhibition and everyone was very helpful. Great cafe and recommend the coffee and biscuits!

September 2020
Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.
September 2019
Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.
June 2019

April 2019
great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Barton on Sea
(6 miles)
(2)
A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.
A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.
June 2023
Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.
April 2019
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)
Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.
To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.
Highcliffe Castle Beach
(7 miles)
(3)
A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.
Very picturesque beach with great access, looks good for a beach day

September 2022
Thank you so much for a lovely stay at Coach End, which had everything we needed. We found the house very clean. The huge bed was really comfy, the house was surprisingly quiet for such a central location, and we slept so well. The lounge was a very pleasant bright room to sit and read or watch the birds in the garden. We were lucky to have great weather and enjoyed having our coffee in the garden. The location was excellent, we could easily walk to the pubs shops and restaurants. We had great meals at The Haven and The Ferryman, which we highly recommend. We also enjoyed a drink at The Chequers Inn, the food looked good but we didn’t eat there. The Saturday market has a great variety of stalls where we picked up some lovely deli items for our picnics. We especially enjoyed walking around the Sea Wall, which we highly recommend for anyone who loves bird watching or just watching the boats. Overall, a great stay and so easy to do all the things we enjoy about that part of the country. Thanks again
September 2022
Lovely and clean home. Everything you need and a short walk to the shops. Perfect base for exploring. Keep up the good work.
September 2022
We enjoyed our stay. The location is very good. The bed and seating are comfortable. The TV is good and the internet is fast enough. On the negative side the cutlery ad crockery are old. The fluorescent light in the kitchen could do with updating. The rugs are old and look dirty. The feather pillows are very hard and heavy. But the main problem which may stop us staying there again is the lack of shower. over the bath.

Great place to have lunch or just a cuppa when visiting the shops of Lymington.
July 2022
Great place to eat, Had Ham, egg and chips and a pint of shandy lager and paid £6-20. Great service, great food which was hot and freshy cooked.
August 2019
A well run Wetherspoons pub, light and airy unlike some of them! good value food and drink, pleasant staff and the food comes in good time, staff around clearing tables and keeping the place tidy.

You know what to expect at Wetherspoons, one of the nicer ones we've been to, good selection of real ales.

The Angel & Blue Pig
(Less than a mile)

A stylish and elegant gastro pub on the high street, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Lots of wooden beams, bare brick walls, large fire place and pretty soft furnishings - there’s also outside seating. The Angel and Blue Pig specialize in steaks, which receive great reviews. The main menu changes each month and is supplemented by daily specials. All the dishes are creative, varied and beautifully presented. A delightful spot for a drink or bite to eat.

May 2021
Good food and service

Excellent museum that tells the story of the town and local area and also has space for changing exhibitions. Also acts as the local visitor info centre and has plenty of information about things to do in the area. There's also a nice gift shop and super little cafe.

A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. The superb Raft Rocks Restaurant is worth a visit with its Art deco style and roof terrace. You can also walk across the wildlife marshes to Keyhaven harbour and (in season) take the boat to Hurst Castle or the Isle of Wight.
Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.
March 2024
A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.
August 2023
Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away
July 2022
A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.
October 2021
One of my favourite places
July 2021
Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.
June 2019
Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s
April 2019
great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.
June 2017
