Sway is a small but thriving and busy village surrounded by open forest and countryside. Its famous landmark is Sway Tower, which at 200ft tall can be seen for miles. The tower is also known as Peterson's Folly, after Andrew Peterson who built it on his private estate between 1879–1885.
Sway has a mainline train station (London Waterloo to Weymouth line) and good selection of friendly shops. These include a well-stocked convenience store, Deli and coffee shop, chemist, hairdressers, newsagents and post office. Supermarkets and high street stores can be found in New Milton and Lymington, both only 4 miles away.
Other notable buildings include the pretty Victorian St Lukes C of E church and Artsway - a gallery and arts centre well worth stopping by. It hosts local and international exhibitions as well as educational workshops. The Jubilee Sports Ground offers flood lit tennis courts, football pitch and cricket ground and pavilion. The village community host several events and drama productions throughout the year, the highlight being Sway Carnival – the whole village turns out to cheer on the carnival procession along bunting crowded streets.

Visited for a family meal. We asked to move to a quiet table as part of the restaurant was close to the bar area and noisy. Excellent home cooked food, brilliant service and good value for money.
November 2023
Lovely friendly pub. There were six of us who went for a Sunday Roast. Really delicious food and the puddings were amazing too. Would recommend this pub without hesitation. Service was excellent and staff friendly and attentive.

March 2022
We only popped in once - We fancied a cocktail as it was really hot and thought it would be fun to have something different, Mine came out warm with no ice and was tiny. We couldn't sit on tables outside unless booked but the entire time we sat indoors with no air-con, table were free outside.

The Hare and Hounds
(Less than a mile)
(21)
A spacious 200-year-old coaching Inn with crackling open fire during the cooler months and spacious beer garden in the warmer weather. This is a family run pub with friendly staff serving a selection of cask ales, beers and decent wine list. The main menu is familiar pub fare, but diners will love the specials board echoing what’s local and in season. Check out their event nights. Dogs are welcome.
Hare and Hounds (T: 01590 682404) Durnstown, Sway, Lymington SO41 6AL
We found this to be the best pub around for service and food. As soon as we arrived we were quickly seen to and escorted to a table although we hadn’t booked and it was extremely busy. The person who served us was very professional, attentive, efficient and friendly. The meal itself was first class. We had the fishcakes and these were extremely tasty and well presented. We rated this the best pub for food around the area.
August 2023
Very welcoming when we walked in. The service and the food were both exceptional. Would highly recommend.
August 2023
Staff were very friendly and the food was excellent - the liver and bacon tower was especially good. There was also a good selection of desserts - the homemade cheesecakes were really nice!
June 2023
We had a wonderful meal here on 1st June 2023, there is a large varied menu and it was nice not to have chocolate on most of the dessert menu. Patricia.

Brilliant well-run pub with excellent menu and attentive, efficient and friendly staff. We felt lucky to live close, enabling us to have 3 lovely meals there and a couple of visits to the great beer garden for liquid refreshment in the hot weather we were lucky to have during our fortnight’s holiday.
July 2021
An excellent country pub not five minutes from where we stayed. Good food and beer.

August 2019
Excellent Inn for meals especially their Sunday Lunches - especially try their syrup sponge pudding!
July 2019
Fantastic! Traditional New Forest pub that's always busy and always friendly and welcoming. Sunday lunches are amazing and such good value. Usually lots of vegetarian choices too. Also dog-friendly in the main part of the pub though not the restaurant, but the food is the same. Been visiting regularly on holiday for about 20 years and never fails to please!
March 2018
Sunday lunch was fantastic, now we know why people were waiting outside for it to open!
November 2017
Always good value food, service and atmosphere
October 2017
Had a wonderful Sunday lunch at Hare and Hounds, could not recommend it more highly, staff very welcoming and very cosy furnishings..
September 2017
Had dinner here on the Friday evening, having pre-booked a table. Menu was appealing and extensive and the quality of the food generally excellent I for both quality (although the steak selected by one of us was reported to be 'gristly' and quantity. Service was efficient on what was clearly a busy evening for them.

The Filly Inn
(2 miles)
(17)
Step in to this 17th century inn and you’ll find a warm welcome. Low ceilings, chunky beams and crooked posts and log burners create a homely olde worlde ambience. Outside is a large and spacious beer garden with glorious views over the forest and Roydon woods nature reserve. Food at The Filly has a fine reputation for its generous portions and fresh local produce, showcasing all the New Forest has to offer. Dogs welcome
The Filly (T: 01590 623449) Lymington Road, Setley, SO42 7UF
Nice location, excellent food and very dog friendly.
October 2023
We had a nice meal at the inn. The service was very good and the food nice. Lovely outside area which would be nice in warmer weather!
August 2023
Brilliant place and great food, staff great too, great potential as it hasn’t been open too long
July 2023
Visited twice during our stay, luckily the weather was so nice we were able to sit outside in the extensive and attractive outdoor seating area which appeared to welcome dogs and their owners. Varied and interesting menu, food well cooked and tasty. Good service.
June 2023
Busy pub and restaurant. Nice atmosphere and good food. Service on a Saturday evening was a little slow, but overall pretty good.
May 2023
A bit of a disappointment here, a very warm welcoming atmosphere but the food was not good value for money and we did not realise that they allowed dogs in the bar/restuarant area until we had been served our meal. We did not go again.
October 2022
Very nice interior and outside seating area, front of house staff very pleasant but kitchen may have been short staffed. Pub was busy from early on with diners and there seemed to be long waits for courses, at one point the chap who appeared to be in charge went into the kitchen to assist (you can see the open kitchen). I has chicken schnitzel which was massive and a very thick chicken breast with fries and green salad which was just iceberg lettuce with Caesar dressing. Tasted good but expected more than lettuce on the side. OH had burger which was very good apparently. No room for dessert.
September 2022
Beautiful pub, good beer. Didn't eat but have been told the food is brilliant.
March 2022
Had 2 really lovely meals here lively setting and cheerful staff

July 2021
The Filly Inn is a superb place for a meal, friendly staff, and an amazing outside area to sit in the evening sun with your dinner and a drink.
July 2021
We visited the Filly Inn in September 2019 and spent many a late afternoon in the beer garden. We were disappointed in both January and July 2020 to find it under refurbishment :-(. Hoping it will have reopened again for our next visit.
August 2020

Barton on Sea
(5 miles)
(2)
A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.
A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.
June 2023
Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.
April 2019
Milford on Sea
(5 miles)
(16)
A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. The superb Raft Rocks Restaurant is worth a visit with its Art deco style and roof terrace. You can also walk across the wildlife marshes to Keyhaven harbour and (in season) take the boat to Hurst Castle or the Isle of Wight.
Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.
March 2024
A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.
August 2023
Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.
June 2023
Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.
June 2023
Brilliant beach.
September 2022
Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away
July 2022
A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.
October 2021
One of my favourite places
July 2021
Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.
September 2020
Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.
September 2019
Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.
June 2019
Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s
April 2019
great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach
March 2019
Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.
December 2017
Fantastic sea location with goods pubs, shops etc
November 2017
Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.
June 2017
Highcliffe Beach
(6 miles)
Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.
To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.
Highcliffe Castle Beach
(6 miles)
(3)
A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.
Very picturesque beach with great access, looks good for a beach day
October 2021

April 2017
Avon Beach
(7 miles)
(2)
A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all. For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months. This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.
Nice beach with good facilities
April 2023
Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

Our fourth or fifth visit to this property. A great location for exploring the New Forest. Forest only 10 minutes walk away. Nice and quiet. The only annoying thing is that the heating insists on resetting to 21C every day, we had to keep turning it down as it was too hot.
September 2022
Our 3rd time and location trumps anything else but to be honest the cottage is very good and priced accurately.

Very comfortable and relaxing stay.
August 2018
Great little house, a good stay here for 4 adults and toddler. 2nd bedroom pretty small with 2 single beds but perfectly comfortable.

We had to juggle our travel arrangements due to heavy snow falls and the very cold weather. The letting agents where proactive in contacting us and helping get everything on track.
November 2017
Perfection is hard to find, but we did enjoy our stay.

We had a wonderful meal here on 1st June 2023, there is a large varied menu and it was nice not to have chocolate on most of the dessert menu. Patricia.

An excellent country pub not five minutes from where we stayed. Good food and beer.

April 2019

June 2023
Brilliant beach.

Fantastic sea location with goods pubs, shops etc
November 2017
Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.

Avon Beach
(7 miles)
