Life in Falmouth revolves around the sea. Boats of every shape and size fill the waterfront, from colourful fishing boats on the old quay, shiny super yachts in the marinas and huge ships in the industrial docks. You’ll find freshly-caught seafood on the menu of Falmouth’s many restaurants, and hear songs about the the sea belted out at the annual Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival.

Built around the third largest deep-water harbour in the world, this bustling town is steeped in maritime history. In 1540, King Henry VIII built Pendennis Castle on the edge of the Fal estuary to defend against invasions and protect the Carrick Roads waterway. Over 200 years later, it was Falmouth where the news of Nelson’s death, and Britain’s victory at Trafalgar, was first landed and taken to London.

Today, you can embark on your own voyage of discovery at the National Maritime Museum. With 15 galleries, interactive exhibits, a boatbuilding workshop and an underwater viewing window, kids and adults alike will love learning about Falmouth’s vibrant past.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a total novice, a holiday in Falmouth isn’t complete without taking to the water. Thanks to its sheltered harbour, Falmouth is one of the UK’s premier sailing destinations so it’s a great place to learn the ropes and set sail. Or why not your try your hand at kayaking, paddle boarding or scuba diving? For a more relaxing approach, hop aboard one of the many boat trips leaving Falmouth harbour, heading to the pretty fishing village of St Mawes, Cornwall’s capital, Truro, or to catch your own fish supper. Make sure to keep an eye out for wildlife along the way - if you’re lucky you might spot seals, dolphins and basking sharks.

If you haven’t found your sea legs, there’s plenty to keep you entertained on dry land. Explore the historic ramparts of Pendennis Castle, stroll through Falmouth’s many gardens or hit the shops; Falmouth’s pretty streets are filled with quirky boutique shops, high street names and artisan cafés. There’s also a real creative buzz in Falmouth. You’ll find art galleries, including the award-winning Falmouth Art Gallery, live music and a busy calendar of festivals, regattas and events.

No holiday in Cornwall is complete without a trip to the beach, and you’re spoilt for choice in this beautiful corner of south west Cornwall. Gyllyngvase, just a short walk from the town centre, is Falmouth’s most popular beach. There’s a large, sweeping stretch of golden sand, clear waters and an award-winning café, Gylly Beach Cafe. A little further along the coast path you’ll find Swanpool and Maenporth, two beautiful sandy coves with sheltered waters and family-friendly facilities. If you dream of having a beach to yourself, the nearby Helford River estuary is peppered with smuggler coves and tranquil inlets.

The South West Coast Path is right on the doorstep of our Falmouth holiday cottages, offering panoramic sea views no matter which way you turn. Beach was very busy when we visited with long queues for food. We took the coastal path and things were much quieter. There were a lot of dog walkers enjoying the path and not all of them were cleaning up after their dogs.

Lovely beach

September 2020

Castle Beach
(2 miles)

There’s a thin arc of sand and shingle to flop on here at Falmouth’s most northerly beach, but that’s not the main attraction … at low tide a wide expanse of rock pools is exposed where kids and adults alike can spend hours discovering the watery pools packed with miniature sea life. Diving and snorkelling are popular here too, with plenty to see in the clear waters beyond the rocks. If you forget your bucket and net you can buy one at the beachside café, also serving drinks, ice creams and sandwiches that can be enjoyed on their large sundeck with lovely sea views. Keep an eye on the tide times though as at high tide the majority of the beach can be covered. There’s no lifeguard or car park, but plenty of parking along the road running parallel to the beach. Dogs allowed from October to Easter Sunday.

Swanpool Beach

A lovely sandy cove on the outskirts of Falmouth with lots of sand and clear water for swimming. If relaxing on the sand’s not your thing though, the beach backs onto Swanpool Nature Reserve where you can walk dogs on leads or feed the ducks and swans, and there’s also a beach cafe, kayak hire and 18 hole crazy golf course. Dogs allowed from October to Easter Sunday

A lovely beach but does get a bit crowded sometimes. Parking can be a problem in busy times too.

September 2021

Even in the middle of what has been one of the busiest summers cornwall has seen, this still offered space and attractions without the crowds. Loved being able to take the dog for a swim before 10am and after 6pm

September 2021

Lovely beach and costal walk

September 2020

Lovely beach, not fine sand but ideal for Kayaking and paddleboarding

August 2020

Maenporth Beach
(3 miles)

A scenic sweep of golden sand flanked by cliffs, this family friendly beach looks out across Falmouth Bay towards Pendennis Castle and the lighthouse at St Anthony Head. There’s plenty of sand and shallow water which is great for children and excellent facilities, including a cafe selling great food and beach equipment, plus toilets and car park. Maenporth is also a lovely spot to launch a kayak or paddleboard, both of which can be hired on the beach during summer months. Dogs allowed from October to Easter Sunday.

Fantastic beach

April 2024

Lovely and clean, beautiful.

October 2023

Absolutely loved Maenporth. Lovely sheltered beach with fantastic cafe

August 2023

Lovely beach but early morning dog owners do not on occasion clean up on their dogs. We had to borrow a shovel on two occasions to clear the mess

August 2023

If you think this will be a quiet, hidden gem then you’d couldn’t be more wrong. It’s a very busy, active beach with lots to do and changing tides. We felt very blessed to be staying so close so we didn’t have to arrive super early to get a car parking space. Loved how safe it felt most of time, except when the fog came rolling in as fast as a wave! Enjoyed paddling, swimming, rock-pooling, playing with local dogs (after hours), someone built an incredible pyramid sandcastle which the kids and adults enjoyed.

August 2023

This beach is beautiful! Not too busy and everything is within a short distance.

July 2023

My favourite beach. Sunrise from here is something else!

April 2023

Used the beach but time off visit big waves so paddle boarding out off the question but had great fun on the body boards. Not a crowed beach parking prices reasonable, parking right on the beach .

September 2022

Lovely beach our third year in a row. The only problem which is not unique to this beach, is weaver fish. I do think visitors need to be made more aware of the adviseability of wearing beach shoes to protect against this problem. I think all beaches should have signs to this effect.

August 2022

Mix of sand and shingle beach. Quite a bit of seaweed when we were there but of the lettuce type so not too problematic. Not much in the way of waves so not good for body boarding but good for paddle boards or kayaks and swimming. Nice little take out cafe.

August 2022

Lovely beach and so convenient to Maenporth Estate. Shame about the seaweed that arrived! But beautiful nonetheless.

August 2022

Lovely beach

July 2022

Wonderful beach, very clean. Lovely view , didn’t use coffee shop so can’t comment.

June 2022

A lovely, perfect beach, ideal for everyone and great for rock pooling. Really clean too.

June 2022

Beautiful...although it did say no dogs, and there were plenty!

June 2022

Love this beach never tire of the view

October 2021

Lovely 'out of the way' beach with great outlook. Can be a bit 'smelly' when the tide it out in the lagoon nearby but does not distract from the beach or surrounds.

September 2021

Beautiful beach a hidden gem

September 2021

Great beach with a mix of sand and stones. Interesting caves when the tide is out. The tide goes out quite far so a bit of a walk to the sea but great for kids and adults alike.

September 2021

Lovely secluded beach -safe for children and doing water sports. Cafe and toilets nearby. Only downside no tap to wash sand off feet.

September 2021

Beautiful

September 2021

A bustling and busy sandy beach offering water sports and swimming and yet without the crowds of other parts of Cornwall. The coastal walks from there are glorious too.

September 2021

Great beach.

August 2021

Love this beach. It’s just stunning. Definitely returning.

August 2021

This is a great beach for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, exploring caves and rock pooling. Clean clear water, easy car parking and toilets plus a little cafe.

July 2021

Nice beach but disappointed that many dogs were running free on it. Witnessed several dogs pooing on the beach. This is supposed to be a dog free beach from Easter to October and I visited in June. Does no one police this blatant ignoring of the rules?!!

July 2021

Lovely Sandy beach with great cafe, toilets, parking and coast paths to enjoy.

July 2021

Fantastic holiday in a beautiful location. The holiday home was spacious, clean & the whole site was Covid friendly. We chose this holiday as we felt it was the safest option during these difficult times and everything about it came up to & beyond our expectations. My granddaughter especially enjoyed using the children's playground & indoor pool. The booking procedure and use of the swimming pool was ideal. Well organised. Many, many thanks. We came home feeling relaxed after a great week.

September 2020

Best beach in the area, its like been on a Greek island when the sun is shining

September 2020

Better beach than Swan pool, ideal for young children, gently sloping, perfect for water sports

August 2020

Really convenient if staying at maenporth estate. Mix of sand, shingle and rocks. Great for rock pooling. Calm sea so safe for families and watersports such as paddle boarding and kayaking. Wasn't overcrowded even when very warm!

August 2020

Beautiful quiet cove idyllic spot

July 2020

great beach complete with smugglers cave

November 2019

Lovely beach with decent facilities, but beach needs regular cleaning even after bank Holiday week

September 2019

This is a fabulous family friendly beach as it is quite sheltered. A great place to paddle board, relax and eat ice cream! You do need to get there early as the car park and beach fills up really quickly. I would also recommend beach shoes as several people were stung by weaver fish who were hiding in the sand as the tide went out. Definitely worth a visit ????

August 2019

Perfect beach

June 2019

June 2019

October 2023

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Falmouth and surrounding areas, also we enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of the town

October 2023

We really enjoyed our stay. The location was lovely however the service access road was messy, however there isn’t a lot the owner is able to do about this.

Thanks so much for your feedback, it is appreciated. I'm not sure who is responsible for the service lane, but we'll see what we can do to tidy this up this area.

September 2023

We loved our stay, we will definitely be coming back

That's so great to hear! We look forward to hearing from you.

June 2023

Our stay was amazing. The location was beautiful as were the fantastic views and so peaceful. We even did a bit of painting(of the view of course) It was great to be able to walk into Falmouth and not have to use the car.

It sounds idyllic, so glad you enjoyed your week!

October 2022

The cottage was amazing with an incredible view. The little extra touches like the milk and other goodies left for us made it really special.

I'm pleased you appreciated the hamper goodies - the owner will be delighted! Many thanks for the feedback.

August 2022

Lovely property and great location.. Sofa has seen better days and cushions often needed plumping up. Just ashame that as we were leaving the cleaner got angry with us for leaving the property 10 minutes late. What was a very pleasant holiday was tainted by this especially as we had spent time emptying bins and taking washing off bed as instructed!

I'm so sorry you experienced a run-in with the cleaner. I think it was because the lane is so difficult to reverse down if he arrives before the guest has left. But, I agree, not a great way to finish your holiday. The sofa was due to be replaced at the beginning of the season, but production has been held up. Unfortunately, it won't now be delivered until September. Many thanks for taking the time to comment.

- The Toad Hall Team

June 2022

Fabulous view from the house.

Thanks so much for your feedback - a new corner suite was ordered at the beginning of this year. Unfortunately, the delivery date will be this month sometime. I hope you'll visit again and see the improvement.

June 2022

- Upstairs bathroom is lovely - Masterbedroom bed is amazing and very comfortable - thanks for providing some board games - property has some of the most amazing views ever - location is fantastic - property is situated in a great spot - kitchen space is great - rooms are very big

Thank you so much for leaving us some suggestions as to how La Mouette might be improved. We have new sofas on order, unfortunately the delivery time has been delayed.

- The Toad Hall Team

November 2021

We did enjoy our stay. The welcome gift was appreciated. The downstairs of the property was a decent size and the views were good. It was nice and quiet. The beds and linen were comfortable and of good quality. We banged our heads a lot in the top bedrooms in the eaves. I suggest the description should make it clear that these are not full height rooms.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review, and also for mentioning the issues you encountered. These will all help when preparing our annual Property Inspection.

- The Toad Hall Team

October 2021

Everything was perfect! My only tiny comment would be a small breakfast table in the kitchen I think that would be especially helpful for families with younger children.

That's a great suggestion! I will definitely pass that on! Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review!

- The Toad Hall Team

August 2021

Great property. Personally, think that the furniture in the lounge has seen better days.

Thanks so much for this feedback. We can use this when preparing our annual Owner's Report at the end of the season. Pleased you liked the Falmouth area!

- The Toad Hall Team

July 2021

Really clean property - little extras like the welcome pack were really appreciated. Only down side was that there was no washing line - properties often include a washer with a dryer but washer dryers are not often that great. We don't have room for lots of suitcases in the car, so I always wash while away but often find there is no washing line to wash things on. There was an airer though, so that was one thing - washing line would have been better though,

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review. You are quite right about the washing line and I will mention it to the caretaker of the property. I will also take a look at the travel instructions and see if they can be adjusted to make the property easier to find!

- The Toad Hall Team

June 2021

A lovely bungalow, comfortable and finished to a high standard. Excellent position to view comings and goings in the harbour. Sun all week, easy access to walk into Falmouth. Access to property by car challenging at first sight but we soon go used to it. A lovely property.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay at La Mouette. The views are lovely, especially from the telescope in the master bedroom where you can indeed see all that is going on in the harbour. We do hope to welcome you back to Cornwall in the future!

May 2021

House was a little hard to find and approach to property was down a narrow, unpaved lane but once at the house the views are lovely and the property is well presented with plenty of parking. Location was great, short walk into town downhill. We enjoyed our stay and would stay in La Mouette again

May 2021

Most enjoyable stay at a lovely property. Access not easy but wonderful views

We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay at La Mouette, and agree that the views are quite lovely! Thank you for taking the time to review your property.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return to this property again .

That's fantastic! So pleased you finally got to La Mouette after all the lockdowns!

December 2020

I could not find any oven gloves. When pulling out the door to dishwasher the outer tray below is dirty. It can be partially seen when the door is closed. That’s it! I enjoyed my stay, a beautiful location and overall a very clean and welcoming home from home.

November 2020

This is our second visit to La Mouette and had another enjoyable stay. Thank you

You are very welcome! We look forward to welcoming you back to Cornwall in the future. Meanwhile, do stay safe and well!

July 2020

Great house, great stay and Sara Mc Nulty was fabulous in finding the me a property that ticked every box I had

April 2019

Very clean, well-equipped and comfortable property. Private off-road parking a real bonus for stays in Falmouth. Would stay here again and would recommend to family and friends.

Hi Philip, Thanks so much for taking the time to add a review for La Mouette. We agree it's a great place to stay, and the views are fabulous. We'd love to welcome you back any time, Best wishes, Sara

April 2019

As ever, we enjoyed our stay. I believe this is our sixth time at the property and we hope to return later in the year.

February 2019

25th August 2018

February 2019

9th October 2018 - A wonderful dormer bungalow located within its own grounds with stunning views of the rover and coastline. We have now stayed here multiple times which is testimony to our enjoyment of the property. We shall return again in 2019. Internally the property is well appointed, and comfortable although the sofa in the living room does not offer the firm support I personally need to avoid back pain caused by poor posture, but that is me. Others in our party find it to suit their needs. The large screen TV is a boon which with internet access allows the viewing of a wide range of programming should the weather not support external activities. The kitchen is well laid out and offers everything for a self catering holiday. The bedrooms are all very comfortable. Externally a timber bench seat is provided although it is now seeing signs of wear and consideration should be given to its replacement. Similarly the paved patio which comprises a series of steps and terraces creates a comfortable space with the walled garden the build up of mould on its surface is both unsightly and at times can be hazardous as in wet conditions it can be slippery underfoot. If these elements could be subject to change then our enjoyment if the property would be further enhanced. All in all, we thoroughly enjoy our stays here.
