Wonwell Beach
Wonwell Beach
(3 miles)

(5)

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wonwell is a sandy beach on the east shore of the Erme river which joins Mothecombe at low tide. It affords visitors a large expanse to explore and is accessed via a woodland path from the road which takes about 10 minutes. Alternatively, there is a slipway from the road to the shore of the river and at low tide you can walk along the edge to the beach itself, so make sure you get your timings right to make the most of this one. Parking is limited at Wonwell Beach so keep that in mind when you’re heading over. Road parking allows for around 20 cars depending on their size and there aren’t really any facilities around, although there are toilets nearby. This does mean you need to be prepared if you’re heading there for the best part of the day, but also makes for a very peaceful experience whether it’s lounging about on the sand with a picnic in the summer, or a stroll in the cooler months, simply taking in the atmosphere. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round so it’s the perfect place to take them for a run around. Something to be careful of – do keep an eye on the tide to avoid getting cut off when it comes in and getting very wet en route back to dry land!

Lovely beach. so quiet at certain times. always different. great for dogs. parking very limited.

May 2022

Amazing spot, so peaceful. Parking the only issue.

June 2021

Nice beach and great walks that lead to it, very few people around in August! Limited parking so you are better off walking there.

August 2019

Glorious beach at the mouth of the Erme. Narrow lanes and very limited parking. No toilets, cafes etc - wonderful! Turning circle for cars just before the beach but expect to have to reverse back up the access lane to allow cars that are leaving to go back. A nightmare on Bank Holidays - parking almost impossible and expect to have to negotiate very tight spaces.

Lovely beach but bit of a trek for little ones

April 2017

Mothecombe Beach
(4 miles)

(3)

One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.

Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.

September 2023

A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!

May 2021

Lovely beach but cafe was being renovated and we were gasping for a cuppa

Ayrmer Cove
Ayrmer Cove
(4 miles)

(20)

Roughly one kilometre (20 minutes depending on your pace) from the National Trust car park at Ringmore, and with a selection of footpaths to get to it, Ayrmer Cove is a quiet secluded beach on the South West Coast Path. For anyone on holiday in South Devon it’s a peaceful place to sit and contemplate the natural scenery amongst the shingle, pebbles and rock pools, admiring the cliffs. It makes for a beautiful destination to walk to from Ringmore itself, which is a small village (population 230) with views towards the cove itself as well as Bigbury Bay – it makes for a wonderful holiday cottage destination in South Devon as well as a place to visit as part of your day. Walking to the beach allows you to discover the surrounding woodland, wildlife and history of the area – taking in old smugglers’ routes and hedgerows that have been in situ since the 1800s. It is a little tricky to get to so it’s not ideal for wheelchairs, and there aren’t any toilets or facilities at the beach itself so if you want to stay for a little while don’t forget to take snacks or a picnic if the weather is right. This is all about enjoying the environment that’s such a proud part of the National Trust – it’s everything a holiday in Devon is about, and yes, dogs are permitted all year round and will very much enjoy the walk!

September 2019

A beautiful little cove and fun for dogs and children.

August 2019

You can walk to this secluded cove from the cottage. Probably about 20 mins away, depending on your pace. Plenty of blackberries to eat/collect on route when in season! No facilities at the cove but beautifully unspoilt.

August 2019

Really beautiful secluded beach - great for the dog too!

July 2019

A lovely beach at the end of a beautiful valley. Absolutely perfect for dogs and never busy.

June 2019

Parked in the NT car park at Ringmore and took the 15 min walk down to the beach. Saw a beautiful sunset and had the place to ourselves. Bliss

November 2018

What a fantastic place. So quiet - we had the whole beach to ourselves a lot of the time. Our dogs loved it.

September 2018

A lovely quiet cove, with excellent rock pools at low tide. No sand but the kids enjoy it as an alternative to the massive sandy beaches at Bigbury and Bantham.

September 2018

stunning little beach, very quiet and great for snorkelling

July 2018

Beautiful cove. Very quiet with lots of bird life.

June 2018

Well worth the walk with beautiful views of Burgh island from the coast path. We were the only ones there on a very sunny day in April. Perfect.

April 2018

Simply stunning and well worth the steep (ish) walk down from the National Trust car park at Ringmore. When there - it's hard to imagine the horrors of today's modern world.

Challaborough Bay
Challaborough Bay
(5 miles)

(6)

Close to Kingsbridge, Challaborough Bay is a sandy beach in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that’s perfect for enjoying all the seaside activities nature can afford. At low tide the beach is ideal for visiting families to build sandcastles and explore the rock pools, while the swells and shore breaks also attract surfers and bodyboarders. There are some beautiful walks along the coast path that surrounds it, heading towards Bigbury on Sea in particular. Making it an ideal spot to spend the day, the beach has toilets, a café and a beach shop close by, although access is via steps and small paths so accessibility isn’t wheelchair friendly. There is a car park but it’s rather small, so it’s good to know that a 15-minute walk to Bigbury will see ample parking available – seasonal charges apply so remember to bring cash with you. While four legged friends are welcome in the winter, they are not allowed on the beach between May and September, so do plan their walks with that in mind. It’s a lovely spot along the coast path to bring them to, you can even beach hop from one to the next!

Cempletely different atmosphere to the rest of the South Hams. Part of a beautiful coastline set amidst class South Hams countryside.

June 2023

Good if you’re staying all day with children but expensive to park, only whole day parking not good if you don’t want to stay a long tome

April 2022

I didn't like it here. I found it a bit tacky. Also on my walk I popped into the Cafe in the morning but had missed their breakfast time which ended at 11.30 and I was there at 11.34 so they refused to serve me toast with coffee! So I walked out! A guy behind me in the queue was left open mouthed and said if I go on to Bigbury I'll get it anytime I want!

September 2021

Beautiful place to watch the sunset. Good fish and chips on the beach in the evening. Wouldn’t spend the day there as holiday park attached and the beach was left absolutely covered in rubbish by the guests ????

September 2019

Lovely, & just a short walk from Bigbury on Sea car park. It also has a fantastic chip shop that does gluten free fish & chips!

August 2019

April 2017

Bantham Beach
Bantham Beach
(5 miles)

(15)

At the mouth of the Avon River, Bantham beach is easy to reach from Salcombe, Kingsbridge and our other favourite holiday home locations, as well as being a beautiful area to stay in its own right. The beach looks out over Bigbury Bay and offers a wonderful view of Burgh Island, which is famous for its art deco hotel of the same name that has hosted Agatha Christie and Noel Coward amongst its illustrious guests an can reach by sea tractor. Bantham beach has a popular reputation amongst both novice and advanced surfers, and as such there are lessons available from the Bantham Surfing Academy, which operates from the beach. They also offer other water sports including paddle boarding, and a day pottering up the Avon River on one of those when the tide is right, is a day well spent. When the tide is out at Bantham the sandy beach reveals rock pools and great swathes of space so you can happily set up a picnic and stay there for the whole day. If the mood strikes, why not walk along the coast path towards Thurlestone around the corner, and South Milton Sands beyond that, particularly as it’s also a popular beach for dog owners? Just keep in mind that from 1st May until 30th September restrictions apply, so look out for signposts with more information. If you’re spending the whole day on the beach it’s worth popping to the Gastrobus which is open seasonally in the car park, offering everything from freshly made baps to coffees, teas and cakes, or for a larger meal head the short walking distance to The Sloop Inn gastropub. There is plenty of parking available by Bantham, with charges from £3.50 per day, so make sure you have change on you as it’s a bit tricky to find parking otherwise. There are toilets in the car park, and from May to October from 10am until 6pm there is also lifeguard cover on the beach. All in, Bantham has something to offer everyone throughout the year and is one of many beautiful locations to spend time while you’re in South Devon.

July 2023

One of the most beautiful and relaxing places on earth.

June 2023

Worth the £4.50 to park for the afternoon plenty of walking and rock pools to explore, a good wide sandy beach for people with children

April 2022

Great beach particularly at low tide

October 2021

The most extaordinary place and great for kids. Lots to see and do - great sand and very shallow waters so very safe. if you get a chance to go on the water tractor that is great.. and do visit the Pub on the island. Great day out.

August 2021

A lovely beach. £6.50 to park for the day - it's a private estate - but a shame that the owners aren't prepared to put some of the money towards improvements to the toilets - one small sink in each of the men's & women's toilets with a malfunctioning tap is not enough for a beach full of people, children & dogs!

August 2019

Lovely beach for gentle surfing with ice creams, coffee, snacks and pizzas close to the car park.

July 2019

Glorious especially at low tide.

April 2019

July 2018

October 2023

We had a wonderful, relaxing week staying at Bluegate Barn. Personal thanks to Sue for sending on an electric blanket that we accidentally left behind -- very much appreciated!

July 2023

Beautiful property in a beautiful location. The owner has thought very carefully about the needs of their residents and the property is very well equipped with all the necessities that make the holiday relaxing from the onset. We really enjoyed our stay and the amenity and high standards that the whole property provides. Would definitely like to stay again.

July 2023

Peaceful and relaxed holiday. The barn is beautiful, with artwork, plants and furnishing just right. It is the best equipped self catering property of anywhere I've stayed. Loved letting the two hens out of the coop in the morning and locking them at bedtime! Great location, as it's easy to get to everywhere in the South Hams. The walk down the lane and through the churchyard into Modbury is lovely. Modbury has nice pubs, shops and cafes. Loved it all!

June 2023

We had a really nice stay at Bluegate Barn, which is well equipped and very comfortable. It’s in a peaceful location but also fairly central for exploring the area. Would happily return for another holiday.

June 2023

This house is superb in every aspect. We absolutely love staying here as do our grandchildren. We can’t wait to come back again.

May 2023

Perfect stay and we're looking to stay again!

October 2022

Excellent location for walking the SWCP from Plymouth to Torcross

September 2022

A beautiful and peaceful location in an area accessible to many lovely beaches and attractions. The barn is superb, one of the best holiday properties we have visited over the years. Furnished to a high degree with plenty of towels, kitchen equipment and very comfortable beds. Would highly recommend to anyone seeking a great property in a peaceful setting.

September 2022

We had a marvellous time - thank you!

June 2022

Great holiday - super accommodation

May 2022

A real home from home, Modbury provided good access to seaside and Dartmoor. Loved the green road into Modbury. Lovely view from cottage. Needed the thoughtfully provided eye shields because high windows have no curtains.

September 2021

We had a great time with warm welcome from the owner and it was an excellent cottage with superb fixtures and fittings and everything you could want. The area was good with beaches, coastal walks, interesting towns/villages with local shops and art galleries, boat trips and good cafes. Our highlight was Overbecks Gardens (NT).

August 2021

Yes!

May 2021

The quality of everything inside the barn was top notch and it was the best equipped holiday home that we had ever stayed in - there was everything and that we could want and more. The resident chickens were adorable and despite the awful weather, we had a fabulous time and will definitely return. Well done Bluegate Barn and well done Toad Hall Cottages - we will definitely use you again!

November 2020

This is the second year in a row at Bluegate Barn and we absolutely love it . Everything is perfect, the chickens are an added bonus.

October 2020

This is our 3rd time of going to Bluegate barn and it didn’t disappoint. It is so comfortable and breathtaking views that is always so wonderful to wake up to. Sometimes it’s difficult to leave to go out!

September 2020

Perfect!

September 2020

We very much enjoyed the stay. The view and the bantams were a bonus. The barn is great and well furnished too.

September 2020

We had a fabulous stay at Bluegate Barn. The property and grounds were beautiful and the added bonus were the the 3 chickens to look after which my 3 year old absolutely loved. The owner (Sue) was lovely and came to check everything was ok for us and she had thought of everything you might need for your stay which other cottages don’t provide as standard, in our experience. For example, toiletries, dishwasher tablets, sponges, washing tablets, salt, pepper, plenty of fresh towels etc. She had even provided milk in the fridge, fruit and some wine in the rack if we wanted it. I can’t recommend this property highly enough and we look forward to staying there again next time!

October 2019

Extremely well equipped and comfortable cottage

September 2019

The property is very well appointed and comfortable. The keysafe information was inaccurate and unhelpful for our arrival after dark.

August 2019

Our every need was catered for. Superb house in super location

July 2019

Second time we have stayed here and it was every bit as good as before. The accommodation is so comfortable and the standard of fixtures and furnishings are excellent. The outside space is secluded and peaceful with stunning views. We loved it

July 2019

Bluegate Barn had everything you could want for a comfortable stay, it was spotless, wonderful facilities in the kitchen, plenty of good quality towels and very comfortable beds. The grounds were amazing, we weren't expecting such a lovely view. Although it was mostly wet, we had a wonderful holiday there. Thanks to Toad Hall for the great arrangements and to the owner.

June 2019

The property was beautifully decorated and the location was ideal. We particularly enjoyed the large garden and the chickens. Would definitely stay there again.

April 2019

A second single bed in the third bedroom would extend the suitability of the property.

What a beautiful location and a stunningly beautiful cottage that was well presented. On arrival the master en suite was found to have a blocked shower waste pipe and had obviously overflowed with previous tenants, but this was only a minor inconvenience as their was another shower available.

We had a wonderful stay and have messaged Sue Cross to tell her. I have never stayed in a better equipped cottage. The scenery was stunning and the three chickens a delight, especially for the grandchildren. We would definitely book it again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location is perfect for exploring the coast and countryside. The accommodation was so enjoyable and so well equipped it was hard to leave! Fabulous views and safe and secluded area that our two year old granddaughter was able to run about without us worrying. The chickens were an added bonus!

As above. A lovely property and the caretaker - Sue - was very pleasant and very caring.

Cottage was fine. Well equipped. Think you may need to specify the exact way you walk to town and that you'll need a torch at night and wellies most of the time. More so if it's been raining. Also that the path is hilly. I wouldn't put it in the category of pub or shops nearby.

Thank you for your comments. The description details that the path into town is accessed from the property along a country lane directly into the heart of the town less than a mile away, we have added that the path is accessed from the field below the property. Our criteria for nearby pubs or shops is less than a mile, and we trust this clarifies. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay in the South Hams.

Thoroughly enjoyable and the born met virtually all expectations of it. Toothbrush beaker had not been washed and some jeans found in washing machine, but nothing to spoil our enjoyment.

Sorry we missed those couple of items, but glad you had such an enjoyable stay in this wonderful barn.

April 2017

Loved the cottage, very well equipped, comfortable, and beautifully decorated. Grounds were fantastic for children and adults to enjoy and explore, and my six year old became very attatched to her new role as "chicken farmer"! Kitchen was a joy to cook in. Re the cleaning - it was pretty good but I did have to clean the hand basin and loo in the downstairs bathroom when we arrived. Also towels were lovely - all brand new - but it would have been nice if the sticky labels could have been removed from them and given a quick wash... It's a lovely place though and would love to return one day!

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay in this beautiful new property, and have passed on your comments to the owner, thank you.
