This beautiful area of Devon, a National Park, with sweeping open moorland, high tors, rivers that rush down over granite boulders down to deep wooded valleys, is loved by those who enjoy walking and riding. There are historic moorland towns and picturesque villages, secluded beauty spots and spectacular views and Beckaford Cottage, an attractive detached conversion, is no exception. Tucked on the side of a valley alongside the owner’s home, the cottage has lovely views across the valley to the moors beyond, is surrounded by 35 acres and has its own private drive and garden area. The famous and beautiful Becky Falls, which tumble 70 feet beneath a canopy of oaks, is within walking distance of the cottage. Beckaford is traditionally furnished and equipped and provides a most convenient base from which to explore this outstandingly beautiful area of Dartmoor.

Please note: The owners generously decorate the cottage for the Christmas period with a fresh tree from their land, a beautiful wreath on the door and many other festive decorations.

Wood stairs lead up to the open plan living room with exposed scissor beams, picture windows with lovely views on both sides, sofa, two arm chairs, wood burner, flat screen TV, DVD, stereo/CD player, a selection of books and dining table to seat six. Kitchen area with unusual hand-made kitchen units, built-in electric oven and hob, microwave and larder fridge. Separate external utility room with washing machine and freezer. The bedrooms are on the ground floor. Double bedroom with 4ft 6in bedstead and fitted cupboard. Twin bedroom with two 3ft single beds. Bathroom with bath, shower over, basin in vanity unit and WC.

There is a level area of lawn with table and chairs. Opposite the cottage, Archie and Mavis are the horsey residents in the stables. 35 acres surround the property, including five acres of woodland and direct access onto moorland. It is all part of a small working farm.

The small village of Manaton, nestled deep within Dartmoor National Park, is ideally located for exploring the vast and varied landscape of the moors - from the remote barren beauty of the higher moorland to the rivers rushing through deep wooded valleys and rolling countryside.

Dartmoor is a haven for walkers and cyclists due to the abundance of footpaths and cycle routes that snake the moors, offering endless opportunities to get outside and reconnect with nature. Picturesque villages and hamlets are scattered across the rural landscape, offering unusual shops, museums, old churches, cosy pubs, restaurants serving delicious local delicacies, art galleries and craft workshops.

Manaton village itself boasts a church, pub, and also the local landmark, Manaton rocks, famed for its much-photographed formation 'The Bowerman's Nose'. Manaton lies just a stone's throw from the beautiful Becky Falls, which makes for an excellent family or dog-friendly day out. Other nearby attractions include the Miniature Pony Centre, the House of Marbles, and the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, a converted Riverside Mill where you can watch jewellery, sculpture, prints, glass and textiles being created, and enjoy the spacious gallery, shop and Terrace Café.

The stunning Teign valley and the coast at Teignmouth and Dawlish are also within easy reach of the village, and the Cathedral City of Exeter is just 40 minutes away by car.

Whether you are looking for a relaxing rural retreat, or an energising action-packed break, a holiday cottage in Manaton provides the perfect base for a Dartmoor holiday.

Ample parking available.

Sunday lunch was a bit disappointing but the lunches during the week were really good. Staff are very friendly.

December 2023

No daily specials so the same choice every day. Food tasty and well presented but the limited menu put us off eating there more often.

September 2023

Really great place to eat and in a lovely setting. The very best battered cod we had ever ate. A little more vegetarian choice would be very welcome

May 2023

Very dog friendly. Grandson (aged 4) loved the children's burger and we all loved the garden. Shout out to the bar manager who remembered us from a previous visit.

May 2023

Very friendly staff and dog friendly too. We enjoyed our meals there but portions aren’t enormous but good quality food. If the weather is good then the gardens are perfect for a drink and relaxing in with your dog.

September 2022

Visited for a lunchtime drink, largely out of curiosity (we knew it when HF ran it for walking holidays - very much spruced up since then, though I regret the loss of the lovely flagstones in reception & possibly the black silk wallpaper & outrageous chandelier!) The Devon cider & ale were good & the decor pleasant, though not so sure about the rather intrusive music. Service pleasant & others seemed to be enjoying their lunches off a fairly extensive menu. Downside is the 4* hotel prices on drinks - much dearer than either The Cleave at Lustleigh or The Kestor Inn at Manaton.

June 2022

We love the food at this hotel (Quality at a very reasonable price). We dined here regularly in both restaurants whilst staying in a cottage nearby with my partner's father staying at the hotel. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. When her father sadly had to be taken to hospital to have his ulcer treated the manager and her staff assisted us admirably, the Manager calling the ambulance and giving the relevant details to the service provider. Thankyou so much and best wishes to you all at The Moorland.

Outstanding every time

February 2024

We had two meals here and both were excellent. Staff really lovely.

December 2023

A really nice pub with a lovely garden but odd opening hours.

June 2023

Superb setting. The garden is wonderful. Food was first class but a little more vegetarian choice would be good

May 2023

It would be nice to be able to review the drinks and food but when we walked in there wasn't a soul to be seen despite the door being open the pub was deserted. The garden looked lovely. After waiting several minutes we left and went to the Tinpickle & Rhum.

May 2023

Looks like a country pub from the outside but is more a hotel/restaurant inside. We didn’t eat but the food looked good. Really nice garden and good beer. Also dog friendly but only certain spaces inside.

September 2022

We know this establishment from many previous visits over several years and can recommend it highly. It is in a beautiful location and serves excellent food. There is always a friendly welcome there.

August 2021

Awesome. Beautiful garden for pre dinner drinks. Excellent menu and quality of food and service.

June 2021

Had two meals at Rock Inn. Small menu but delicious food - especially the Lobster Bisque Risotto starter.

June 2021

Great pub, but really disappointed with the food. Better pubs in the area - especially The Old Inn up at Widecombe

May 2021

Lovely pub with a great garden, very friendly. My only recommendation would be to introduce a lite bite and sandwiches to their lunch time menu.

July 2019

Good food and service

June 2019

Fantastic Sunday lunch, great service.

June 2019

Really welcoming place, lovely garden and nice quirky interior to the pub. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Food absolutely yummy, perhaps a little expensive, but perfect for a special evening out.

May 2018

Superb evening meal. Fantastic quality, good choices and professional service. Very attractive interior too.

February 2018

The staff were very helpful and pleasant and it was a cosy traditional rural venue. The food was very good although small portions and I would say a little overpriced. Overall did enjoy this venue.

Amazing place, but impossible to reserve a table unless you get in early.

February 2024

A great place to shop

September 2023

Excellent, reasonably priced Breakfast. It was great to have the animals and play area for the children too.

July 2023

Great place to take the family. Toy tractor barn and goats to feed for the kids. Super food. But cafe gets very busy and you need to book.

June 2023

Excellent local farm shop. Meat really good.

June 2023

Child and dog friendly. Lots of animals for small people to see and pet and excellent breakfast!

May 2023

Fantastic place for food and ice creams. Lovely staff and fantastic range of things to do for young children. Well worth a visit. We went twice during our week at the wool store.

July 2022

A Nice, family friendly place. Their menu has a lot of choices but as we had a late lunch there on a Father’s Day, they have run out of a few options. What we had was still tasty though.

June 2022

Amazing!!

March 2022

Reasonably priced cafe with unadventurous hot food menu, I.e. burgers, fish and chips. Thumbs up for the home made raspberry jam available from the shop. Good play areas for kids.

October 2021

It was very busy whenever we went and we were unable to get a table. There appeared to insufficient staff to keep tables cleared.

July 2021

Very friendly staff. Had a wonderful takeaway cream tea.

May 2021

Great facilities and shop, especially for children!

May 2021

Very nice place to eat, food good reasonable prices, quite comfortable and clean.

October 2020

Had a lovely meal here. There was a good atmosphere and the cafe was nicely decorated in Halloween theme for the kids. The shop stocked lots of local food and goods though a bit pricey. Felt safe regarding their Covid procedures.

October 2020

Good farm shop. Unfortunately unable to book a place in cafe.

September 2020

Excellent breakfast

September 2019

Superb food, great service. If you're looking for a good breakfast to get you started in the morning, this is the place to come!

July 2019

Great place for lunch, or just coffee. Good food, friendly staff and dogs welcome. Visit the excellent butchers while you are there.

June 2019

Well worth a visit, gorgeous setting and wonderful food!

August 2018

One of the best quality cooked breakfasts we have ever had! Great value for money.

February 2018

The pasties from here are lovely. We also got a lot of our gifts to take home from here. Great products on sale and very friendly staff.

October 2017

We were staying just up the road from this great place, so called in for lunch with my son and family, who joined us from Torquay. The place was quit busy, but the staff were really helpful, and let us know the approximate wait for our meal. This turned up fairly quickly and was excellent. The size of the steak and ale pie has to be seen to be believed! Will definitely call in again.

September 2017

Made a couple of visits during our stay, not a huge selection but lovely pies. Also tried the local wine & some of the coffee's. Worth a visit.

September 2017

We were staying a mile away near HayTor for two weeks in June and used this excellent farm shop most days. The friendly staff make you feel welcome and the service is very efficient. We ate there several days and as much as we could used it as an alternative to supermarket shopping. The meals are excellent and the cakes are works of art!

July 2017

A fabulous little farm shop and cafe. We stopped here for lunch when we arrived and breakfast during the week. We picked up all our meat from the onsite butcher, but there seemed less choice in the shop compared with our visit last year.

Great food!

June 2023

Visited for an afternoon drink, while out on a walk down the cleave. Good ale & cider, all Devon made. Pretty garden to sit in (inside full except for back, less attractive, bar; front one is lovely). Menu looked fine, but too far to walk over & back at night. Only downside is DO check opening times before setting off - the pub closes most afternoons. Happy to refill walkers' water bottles too.

June 2022

Beautiful pub and garden.

April 2022

Perfect for a drink and meal after a lovely walk around the environs of Lustleigh. Our lunch was excellent. If this is indicative of the remainder of the menu then the cuisine here is a level above the normal pub standard.

October 2021

Pretty pub we actually walked to from our cottage over the ancient Hisley Bridge route. We visited twice and ate once and both visits were more than satisfactory. As a result of visiting I rode up the Wray Way to Moretonhampstead - the pub was near the station at Lustleigh and worth trying as it has a gentle gradient compared to the lanes around Lustleigh.

October 2021

Looks lovely but does not serve any decent beer or cider, concentrating on the look and the food. Like most in this part of the world it has ceased to be a 'real' pub.

August 2020

Excellent baguettes for lunch. Dog friendly.

September 2019

Highly recommended, the animals and the walk around the falls very enjoyable

September 2023

Expensive to park the car £9 per passenger didn’t bother

June 2022

We had a great visit to Becky Falls and completed all of the walking trails. The visitors centre provided games, a petting zoo, a gift shop and refreshments and the staff were friendly and helpful

June 2022

A rip off. We have similar, but more scenic, attraction in Cornwall with free access.

May 2022

Not impressed. A rip-off we have one in Cornwall that is free and very picturesque.

September 2021

pleasant place to visit. We chose to do the shorter red route, which gave excellent views of the falls, but involved clambering over boulders, which was a little too adventurous for us. Generally the advice and signage for the walking routes could be improved

September 2020

Loved this lovely walk

Broadsands Beach

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Elberry Cove
(17 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

April 2024

We did enjoy our stay. Only comments are relating to a large number of woodlice in the property (didn’t really detract from our stay at all but thought should flag up in case other guests have an issue with them).

September 2023

Our stay was very enjoyable

May 2023

Water supply system is poor but probably not improvable!

November 2022

Had an amazing time, wanted to stay longer, the only point I would make is that the wooden stairs are quite off putting for dogs but understand it is in keeping with the decor of the beautiful cottage

October 2022

Been twice, will probably go again. Perfect place for peace

August 2022

Yes, we had a lovely time. The owners were friendly and helpful.

June 2022

Host were great there if we needed them but left us alone to enjoy the peace and quiet

June 2022

We had the most wonderful stay at Beckaford Cottage. It was the perfect base for a week in the beautiful Devon countryside. Chris and Clare were fantastic hosts and our daughter loved helping with the animals on the farm. There was plenty of space for our golden retriever to run around too. We hope to return.

May 2022

Very much. Mr & Mrs Butcher are lovely people. The delicious cake is a most welcome delight. Thankyou once again for sharing this beauty with us.

April 2022

Chris and Claire were so kind and helpful. The views are amazing! It is a wonderful place.

April 2022

We had a wonderful week, lovely weather, area, cottage and our hosts made us very welcome. Thank you

October 2021

We were blessed with great weather most of our week at Beckaford Cottage. The views are stunning and the night skies amazing. The relaxing nature and location of the cottage was perfect for us.

September 2021

Had a lovely time lovely views. Very good value for money. Lovely owners. Have booked again next year.

September 2021

The cottage was really clean when we arrived. Chris made us very welcome, was helpful and very informative. The views were stunning and the setting was very peaceful. A very cosy and comfortable cottage. We really enjoyed our week there.

August 2021

We had a lovely holiday - outside space is glorious and inside is as you would expect on a working small holding. Perhaps a few less books and removal of the precarious bookcase in the smaller bedroom - hubby nearly 'took it out' walking past.

August 2021

We had a lovely time and will look forward to booking this property again.

May 2021

The photos on the website didn’t do either the location or the cottage justice. The gradient is steeper than it looks, which makes the view from the living area fabulous. We loved being 10 minutes walk from Dartmoor, with its dramatic Tors, forest filled river valleys and plethora of wild horses, which were surprisingly approachable and unfussed, yet we were also only an hour or so from the south coast path and in easy driving reach of towns big and small. We loved the little wood opposite Beckaford Farm for its moss covered rocks, gnarly trees and a carpet of bluebells, ditto some parts of the moor. We loved the feeling of peace that descended on us each time we ascended the road back to our home-from-home, especially after we had ventured into busier parts. Our hosts were very polite and went about their business about the farm paying us little heed (in a good sense) but were friendly and approachable, if needed. The double bed was comfortable, we didn’t use the twin beds in the second bedroom, the water hot and plentiful, the kitchen well equipped. The welcome gifts of fruit and cake and flowers sum up the owners; lovely people. The view from the living area window sums up why it is such a lovely place to stay.

May 2021

A wonderfully peaceful and relaxing place to stay, with easy walking access to the moor. The owners are friendly and helpful. Would certainly stay here again and recommend to friends.

May 2021

enjoyed every minute of the stay. The extra little touches were nice, home made cake, flowers and milk. Very friendly owners.

September 2020

Thank you so much Clare and Chris for allowing us to stay here in spite of all the problems happening this year. We've really enjoyed having Yarmer Woods to ourselves (and the birds of course!). Shame our week was shortened by stormy weather - we've been lucky and had some glorious days - see you next year. Thank you again!

September 2020

In this truly awful year, it has been a privilege & a pleasure to spend a delightful week of perfect weather away from it all in your lovely cottage. THANK YOU!

March 2019

Stayed New Year 2018 - Thanks for a fantastic stay. This part of Devon is exceptional. The Christmas tree was a lovely surprise and cake made us feel so welcome!

March 2019

Stayed Christmas 2018 - Fabulous cottage - unbeatable location for great walks across the moor. Lovely weather. Thank you for the cake and Christmas tree :-) It's been a great week. Many thanks to Claire and Chris.

November 2018

The very friendly owners surprised us with Tea, cake and flowers, when we arrived. Lovely place at the heart of the moor and a good staring point for walks! Internet and television (full program) are excellent!

August 2018

Owner very friendly, The horses were a bonus. Lovely place

August 2018

Yes! It was a wonderful, cosy cottage in a delightful, rural location. The furnishings were a little 'rustic', but that befitted the style of the cottage well and the advertisement was not misleading. It was good value for money. Thank you!!

July 2018

Beckaford Cottage is in a wonderful location with amazing views. From the moment we arrived, we felt at home and after two weeks there, it was very hard to leave. Chris and Claire were extremely welcoming, friendly and kind, ensuring our stay was even more enjoyable. The cottage itself was perfect; comfortable, well equipped and peaceful. With open moorland so close, great walks from the farm and excellent links to the South hams, it was a great location to make the most of everything Devon has to offer. We certainly hope to be back!

July 2018

Lovely stay but found the cottage was not really suitable for our dog as living accommodation was upstairs and steep wooden stairs to reach it.Ok maybe for small dog but not a large one not used to stairs!

May 2018

Perfect cottage in idyllic setting.

May 2018

We loved our stay in Beckaford cottage. Its a lovely slightly isolated place (apart from the owners in the farmhouse next door). The peace, quiet and beautiful location is so restorative. Claire and Chris made us very welcome and we were delighted by teh lovely cake, flowers, fruit and pint of milk we found on our arrival - so thoughtful. We wouldn't hesitate to stay in this cottage again if we were coming back to this area (which is quite likely as its so beautiful). The only very slight disappointment was the nearest pub isn't a pleasant stroll away (its a bit further) and isn't very appealing. And the dog loved it!

May 2018

Yes lovely holiday and very helpful owners.

February 2018

Beautiful view from the cottage and lovely spot for walking--plenty of options from the door. Thoughtful touches were appreciated including fresh fruit, cake, flowers and milk on arrival. The owner, Clare, was friendly and welcoming. We plan on returning!

February 2018

We had a wonderful time at Beckaford Cottage, a stunning location with ever changing views, a great base from which to explore Dartmoor, Chris and Clare are lovely hosts, and the horses in the adjacent stable are anybody's for a juicy evening apple! Thoroughly recommended.

November 2017

Beckaford was one of the best cottages we have stayed in - the barn has been converted to give a traditional feel with practical comfort. The views over Dartmoor were phenomenal and there were lots of country activities available nearby that weren't over commercialised. The owners were fantastic - friendly and caring but not intrusive.

November 2017

Second visit - just as special as the first .......perfect.

November 2017

Had a wonderful time. This is our second visit in approximately six months. We would have come sooner but this was the earliest available week. We plan to come back next year.

July 2017

Very comfortable stay, with great views from property, and a good variety of walks from the cottage.

July 2017

It was nice to return to Beckaford cottage after a couple of years to find everything was still just as lovely as our previous two times. Clare & Chris made us and the dogs feel very welcome. Thanks - Alan & Angela

Becka ford cottage is in the most stunning location. It provides everything you could need for a great holiday exploring the surrounding area or just relaxing at the cottage. Chris and Claire are wonderful hosts and made us very welcome in their lovely cottage. Extra touches like home backed cake, flowers and fruit on our arrival were just so thoughtful. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and hope to return there ourselves in the future.

June 2017

Chris and Clare were very welcoming and our daughter was delighted to be allowed to help out a bit on the farm. The cottage was really cosy and was big enough to allow us to just chill out indoors one day - if you're a bookworm, you'll love it! There are also games and jigsaws available for traditional family entertainment as well as the usual TV, DVD and radio and excellent wifi for those who need their electronics on holiday. The location is perfect for a walk up onto Dartmoor and within easy reach by car of lots more Devon attractions, though you need to be careful driving on the narrow twisty country roads.

May 2017

We think that this is one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in if not the best.

May 2017

Wonderful place to stay. We had a wonderful time walking and eating. Nearest shop is Ullacombe farm shop which sells just about anything you could want, just 2 miles away. Chris and Claire are a lovely friendly couple, very helpful.

April 2017

Had a great time

February 2017

A beautiful place with glorious view and ideally located for some great Dartmoor walks. We had a wonderful week at Beckaford Cottage and would love to stay here again on our next trip to Dartmoor.

February 2017

After staying at Toad Hall Cottages in the past I can rest assured knowing my chosen cottage will be to the highest standard and very good price. Highly recommend.

February 2017

Had a lovely holiday. Will definitely book with Toad Hall Cottages again. The cottage was lovely and the location superb. Cannot fault anything about the holiday at all. Thank you.

December 2015

Well equipped, clean cottage in a beautiful location. We have enjoyed a fantastic week sea fishing in Salcombe, swimming in the sea at Bigbury, visiting the zoo at Paignton, and even managed a hack across the morrs

December 2015

A lovely relaxing week. Beautiful views, lots of long walks and plenty of fresh air. Thanks so much, just what was needed.

April 2015

A perfect homely cottage set in a stunning area. The owners were lovely, giving our son a wonderful opportunity to help feed the lambs, groom the horse and generally be part of such a friendly environment. The welcome pack of flowers, cake, fruit and tea was more than we had expected and delicious. Our son was also delighted to discover that the Easter bunny also lives on Dartmoor! I am sure we will visit again, thank you for a lovely holiday.

November 2014

It is what it is - a lovely quaint cottage in the back end of Manaton on the top of Dartmoor. If you want the Ritz, and bustle, then go to London. If you want seclusion, in a house that fits within its environment, that is comfortable, warm, and cosy give it a try. Only uber-townies who can't live without dual carriageways and can't abide the countryside are likely to be disappointed.

October 2014

Fantastic holiday. Perfect in every way

October 2014

Agreat relaxing week, just what we both needed

September 2014

Lovely Place. Spent a week there as a family with two adults and young children. Despite rainy weather keeping us inside at times we found the space was ample and the view from upstairs a delight. The hosts were helpful and courteous at all times, with a nice warm welcome. Plenty to do in the area. Many thanks

September 2013

Beckaford Cottage is by far our favourite holiday cottage so far. Clare and Chris give you a wonderful welcome with a vase of flowers, a bowl of fruit, tea and cake and a pint of milk in the fridge. The fire is also made up ready for you to get cosy in the comfy settee. The location is fabulous - we love it there and plan to return many times.
