Westward Ho!
(2 miles)

(1)

By the small seaside town of Westward Ho! is a comparatively huge and sandy beach, extending two miles north of the town.  To the north it is is backed by a pebble ridge and behind that is Northam Burrows Country Park.  You can access the beach from a number of places; via steps and a slipway in Westward Ho!, or by the ridge itself.  Dogs are banned from most of the beach from May to September, but they are allowed north of Sandymere all year round.  There are two small car parks by the sea front and plenty of parking behind the beach in Northam Burrows Country Park.  Toilets are available in various locations and there are cafes and shops close by in Westward Ho! itself.  The area is popular with surfers and happily there are lifeguards on hand in the summer months as well.

Saunton Sands
(3 miles)

A long straight sandy beach backed by the Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Saunton Sands Beach is popular with surfers and families alike thanks to the long stretch of tantalizing water.  Suited to beginners and intermediate surfers, the waters are comparatively gentle (although obviously you should always be careful), and it is famed for having featured in Robbie Williams’ Angels music video.  Restaurants, cafes, shops and toilets are all within easy reach of the beach, dogs are permitted all year round, and it is the only beach in North Devon to have a Landeez all terrain wheelchair so that everyone can have full enjoyment of it.

Croyde Beach
(6 miles)

Very popular with swimmers and more experienced surfers, and of course sunbathers in the summer months, Croyde Bay is rated as one of the best surfing beaches in the world.  Lifeguards operate from May to September for peace of mind, and there are beautiful rock pools at either end of the beach.  Dogs are allowed on the beach although there are restrictions in summer months, and toilets are close by.  The beach is popular with swimmers, and you can hire equipment for activities such as surfing, fishing and canoeing close by. Restaurants are within easy reach, and you access the beach via a slipway and beach car park with disabled parking, so it’s an extremely welcoming beach for all visitors.

Putsborough Sands
(7 miles)

Rumoured to be one of the finest beaches in the South West, Putsborough Sands stretches three miles north to Woolacombe and has been voted Best Beach in Britain, fourth Best in Europe and thirteenth Best in the World multiple times.  Clear, gentle water make swimming in the summer months inviting, while the rock pools are wonderful sources of entertainment for budding adventurers.  There's a beach shop and a café, toilets close by, and the location is famed for its excellent sunsets.  Popular with surfers, especially long-boarders, Putsborough is the only beach in the area to have some protection from south and south-westerly winds thanks to the landscape, but if you’re heading into the water keep in mind that there’s no lifeguard cover.  Dogs are allowed on the beach and there’s plenty of parking with easy access via a long, sloping path.

August 2023

Had a wonderful week at Waterside Cottage

August 2023

Fabulous cottage, couldn't want for anything. Would definitely stay again

August 2023

We were unlucky with the weather. If the weather had been better, we would have been able to sit in the garden more. View was lovely and local village pleasant.

July 2023

Yes we enjoyed the cottage very much. Appreciated the mix of traditional and modern touches in the decor. Perfect view of the estuary and lovely sunsets. Only slight issue was the towel rail didn't seem to heat up very much, but wasn't a problem. Also the key safe was stiff to open initially. Otherwise a perfect stay.

May 2023

Lovely and clean, as usual. Location can’t be beaten for me, one of my favourite holiday cottages.

May 2023

Fabulous view from the back of the house over the estuary!

August 2022

Fantastic view from the back of the property. A very comfortable temperature inside even during the heatwave. A very enjoyable stay, and a leaky kettle issue was sorted really quickly!

August 2022

Thank you so much - the cottage was clean and comfortable and well equipped and we had no issues. The milk and delicious scones and clotted cream were a lovely gesture and most welcome after the long journey.

July 2022

Absolutely loved the garden view. Location to Appledore and pubs was great and Appledore itself was lovely. If we were being picky, the kitchen was looking a bit tired and could do with updating and the garden needed a bit of attention but we’d definitely stay again.

July 2022

Already booked again

April 2022

We had a fabulous break - what a fantastic location

February 2022

Absolutely perfect. Lovely, cosy, clean characterful cottage. Perfect location. Outstanding views. Close to beaches, shops, pubs, restaurants in Appledore. Will definitely return. Our Jack Russell enjoyed it too especially in the yard overlooking the sea. Due to storm Franklin we were unable to leave rubbish out as specified on bin day. We apologise but left it bagged in back yard to avoid any mishaps. We hope you understand. Thankyou very much & look forward to returning in the future.

January 2022

had a lovely stay at waterside cottage, weather was really good, did plenty of walking. would definitely like to return.

January 2022

Had another fantastic stay at the waterside. My wife and me with our 2 dogs have had the most relaxed week away and well deserved. The pubs and restaurants were open part from the royal george, due to refurbishments. The beaver inn and sea gate were the places we spent time drinking and eating. We shall definitely be booking again.

September 2021

Loved it. Will come back to Appledore again. One small point is that the heated towel rail stopped working and I couldn't work out why.

We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay!. Thank you so much for highlighting that the towel rail had stopped working, the owners have since had it looked at by a professional and it had stopped working so it has now been replaced with a new towel rail. We look forward to welcoming you back to Waterside Cottage soon!

July 2021

It's basically a lovely place in a great location and comfy to be in.

June 2021

One of my most favourite holidays. It was so relaxing and the location was amazing.

May 2021

Fantastic location right on water’s edge, sewer quirky cottage in quaint old part of Appledore. We loved it, only nightmare was the parking main car park quite a long way away and road parking even in April hard to find.

April 2021

Yes thanks for the extra cleaning in this Covid era and also the welcome gift

October 2020

Whilst the cottage was clean I did find a packet of tablets under the bed in single bedroom. This could have been dangerous had a child got hold of them. I did leave a note for caretaker also mentioned leaking skylight during heavy rain.

We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at Waterside Cottage. Apologies that the cleaners didn’t spot the packet of pills, we have raised this with them. The owner has now fixed the leaking skylight so thank you highlighting this. We hope to welcome you back to Waterside Cottage again soon.

September 2020

A lovely little cottage but the thing that really makes it the stunning location. Appledore is wonderful and the cottage is I'm a prime location looking out over the estuary.

August 2020

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to book the cottage again. We were also very pleased with the communications from Toad Hall Cottages which were very informative and always positive in tone.

February 2020

Wonderful cottage in a beautiful location! A short walk to find great pubs/dining/coffee shops/local groceries.

October 2019

We had a wonderful stay - the cream tea on arrival was most welcoming. Lovely cosy cottage and a beautiful location with views over the estuary.

October 2019

Wonderful holiday and we loved the cream tea on arrival, thank you. Great location overlooking the estuary and easy to get to local pubs and cafes. Snug, homely and delightful place to stay.

August 2019

Beautiful location with stunning views. Definitely heading back to Appledore..

August 2019

Loved the property and how some of the original features are still there such as you can see where the cottage ended and the kitchen was added. Sitting out at the end of the courtyard and looking back at the cottage and adjoining properties you could be forgiven for thinking you were somewhere in the Mediterranean. Why go through the hassle of going abroad when there are places like this to stay in in this country

July 2019

Yes, I have stayed before and enjoy the simplicity of this cottage as well as the location

June 2019

Appledore is lovely. Cottage in good location.

June 2019

We enjoyed our stay and loved the view from the main bedroom.

April 2019
