Or stay local, visiting the harbour town of Looe with its vibrant shops, restaurants and bars, plus its wonderful sandy beach, or explore the quintessential fishing village of Polperro a mere 15 minutes’ drive away.  Maybe you could relax in the peace and quiet of the surrounding countryside, then stroll along the private road to the East Looe River watching the birds and wildlife on this gorgeous tidal part of the estuary.

Please note:  The Walled Garden is on the edge of a working farm,

The bustling town of Looe is divided by the ever-changing river that separates quieter West Looe from the absorbing waterfront of East Looe, with its diversity of shops, restaurants and pubs, Banjo pier and sandy beach.

The pace and routine of life in Looe follows the ebb and flow of the tide and the movement of boats returning with their catch of fresh fish. Local boatman can ferry visitors to and from either quay, or alternatively, you can enjoy a pleasant cruise along the beautiful and rugged coastline, keeping an eye out for the schools of dolphins that can often be spotted in the bay.

A guided tour will draw you deeper into the labyrinth of ancient buildings, clustered together in the narrow streets and courtyards that make up the old town of East Looe. Visit the 16th century Old Guildhall museum with its interesting exhibits detailing the town's diverse history, or relax and just while away the hours on the wonderful sandy beach, separated from the river mouth by the Banjo Pier.

The South East Cornish coastline is dotted with lovely beaches, hidden coves, and pretty seaside villages to explore. You can also join the magnificent South West Coast Path to enjoy bracing cliff top walks with spectacular views.

For a different kind of day out, the Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary is just outside Looe, providing vital refuge for primates in need, and a fascinating family activity whilst supporting a great cause.

July 2022

Great little pub just by the central car park in Looe. Alison is so welcoming and friendly, the fuss-free food arrives quick (with fantastic Gluten Free options for my coeliac husband) and tasted great. Doesn’t just ‘tolerate’ dogs and children, actively welcomes them. Wonderful little place.

May 2022

We enjoyed 2 lovely meals whilst in looe. Staff so friendly and excellent service. Meals were good.

November 2020

Fantastic food, lovely staff+very clean (pay friendly too)

August 2018

Nicely refurbished but a bit too much towards a wine bar rather than a "traditional pub" as quoted. Beer was fine but we skipped ordering food as menu aimed more at "trendy" options. Disappointing considering it is within a hundred yards of Looe fish quay, and it is the fresh fish and seafood that Looe is noted for.

July 2019

This place is wonderful, fabulous food and great staff. A must if you are visiting Looe.

July 2018

This place is an absolute gem and is a must for anyone who enjoys high quality scrumptious food. Initially we popped in for lunch of crab sandwich and prawn salad - what a delight indeed - I can honestly say it was the best crab sandwich I have ever eaten in my sixty years - and I have eaten a lot over that time! We were both so impressed we booked for dinner that same evening and were treated to a gastronomic delight of various fish, seafood and steak dishes accompanied with good wine and backed up by excellent service standards. The evening was topped off with an excellent selection of desserts - a most enjoyable evening indeed! Highly recommended.

Warm and comfortable, good food, friendly staff and good atmosphere.

April 2018

The beer is good and the food good value pub food. I had fish pie on a cold day and it was warming and wholesome. The best thing about the pub in poor weather is the roaring open fire. It must be the best pub fire in Cornwall. Dogs love it. On one visit our dog didn’t want to leave.

March 2018

Loved this pub, atmosphere great, food a must. Booking is essential though which we did after trying to get in twice before

beautiful line but service not very frequent

August 2022

Brilliant little railway journey. Lovely oldie Worldie station. Beautiful scenery.

July 2022

Easy to book .The train rise itself is OK but mainly through woodland so not much too see apart from trees. The walk from the train station to the town is abit of a walk about 15 minutes .The town its self is ok but seems to be for older people ie the shops are very old fashioned. Personally we would not visit again .

July 2021

Totally brilliant. Loved it

July 2021

Delightful branch line, frequent + reliable service, lovely views of estuary, woodland, bluebells ?!

June 2021

Enjoyed our train ride, but was disappointed in Liskeard, got the next train back.

September 2020

we got a group saver ticket and was very happy with the price, but unfortunately our train was due to leave at 11:10. we were sitting on the train waiting and at approximately 11:40 the driver came from his cab and apologised that the loud speakers were not working and that the train was cancelled, so we had to wait until 12:22 on a very warm train.

September 2019

Lovely little train ride alive the river, worth while. Recommend travelling to Lisgard and getting a return to Looe, much cheaper to park that way!

June 2018

Looe Museum
(2 miles)

(4)

Owned by the East Loose Town Trust, the Looe Museum is managed by a small community of volunteers, and gives a delightful insight into the history and character of the area.  It’s an opportunity to develop your knowledge of the town and locality whether you’re a first time visitor or frequent tourist.  They frequently house new exhibitions and take part in local events, acting as a supportive part of the community.  In 2016 they celebrated the 150th anniversary of the lifeboats in Looe for example, by loaning some of its objects to the RNLI for a dedicated exhibition.  Admission is £2 for adults, £1 for children, and £4.50 for families.

Hannafore Beach
(2 miles)

(9)

Half a mile west of Looe, stretching along the coast, Hannafore Beach is a sandy, shingle bay with a rocky reef and views of St George’s Island.  At low tide it’s brimming with rock pools, making it fun and games for the whole family to enjoy, and it’s a wonderful sun trap in summer months thanks to its south east facing position.  Because of its location over the river, the beach never really becomes too busy, but equally there aren’t any facilities nearby.  It’s popular with dog walkers as it’s amongst the few dog-friendly beaches in the area, and having explored you can extend your excursion to a stroll along the promenade or a potter around the coast path to the wonderfully scenic Talland Bay.  There is roadside parking along the sea front above the beach, but it can be difficult to find a space.  Alternatively, there is a large car park in West Looe, around 10 minutes away on foot.

June 2017

Looe Beach
(2 miles)

(20)

In East Looe, the beach sits directly in front of the old town, sheltered by the Banjo Pier and overlooked from the east by the hillside of Mount Ararat.  A good family beach that has something for everyone, at low tide the sandy location is safe for swimming although it’s recommended you steer clear of the river mouth beyond the pier.  Unfortunately dogs aren’t allowed on this beach at any time of the year, but Hannafore beach in West Looe is dog friendly.  The beach backs on to a seafront walkway which runs its length all the way to Second Beach to the east, where it tends to be less busy and it’s good for snorkeling.  As it’s in the centre of the town there are lots of facilities and cafes nearby, but in the summer it’s a very popular spot and parking can be tricky, with traffic prohibited during these months, so be prepared for a bit of a walk.

April 2023

LOVE LOVE LOVE

July 2022

All of the beaches around Looe are worth visiting - and the coastal path is a must. Fuel for the hike? Not listed in the reviews is Sarah’s Pasties which has the best pasties (we ate a lot of pasties during the week!). They were also one of the few eateries in the area which could provide something for someone needing a gluten and dairy free diet. We were able to preorder pasties that met her dietary requirements.

Plaidy Beach
(2 miles)

(1)

A small and pleasant grey sand beach with rocks exposed at low tide, Plaidy Beach is simply a nice place to visit and take in the scenery.  There aren’t any facilities, and there’s no parking nearby so it’s one to reach on foot.  There’s a slipway to the beach, but you will have to access it by walking along the coast path, parking at Millendreath or Looe and it’s worth keeping in mind that it’s quite steep from both directions.  Millendreath is closer and the walk should take around 20 minutes.  Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, so it’s a charming place to take them for a walk while you’re in the area.

Millendreath Beach
(2 miles)

(1)

Millendreath Beach is a south facing beach at the foot of a wooded valley, in a sheltered cove with soft sand and lots of rock pools to explore at low tide.  It’s connected to other nearby beaches by the South West Coast Path.  Dogs aren’t allowed on this beach at any time of the year, and there is a reasonably sized car park a few minutes walk away.  The beach is popular with families on holiday in Cornwall, and most of the surrounding area is occupied by a holiday park, so there are lot of facilities open to the public.

Talland Bay
(3 miles)

(16)

A small, quiet beach between Looe and Polperro, Talland Bay actually comprises two beaches, one of which has sand both at low and high tide and is good for swimming all the time, while the other is less sandy and is easiest to swim from at high tide.  There is a ramp for launching boats from the main beach and there are lots of small coves and tidal pools to swim in as well, so it’s a delightful area to explore in the water.  Parking is limited, but there is a small, free car park by the beach and paid parking at The Beach Café, all of which provide easy access to the sand.  Thanks to the nearby café, visitors can also benefit from the accompanying facilities, on-site shop, and tuck into Roskillys Cornish Ice-Cream as well.

Beautiful little bay with a great cafe overlooking it. Dogs allowed on the beach Oct to end of May.....

October 2021

Although there was indeed sand in one of the bays it was largely covered with seaweed at the water's edge when we were there. All very natural.

October 2021

Lovely bay, shingle beach

September 2021

Not a great beach and a bit smelly.

August 2021

Unfortunately the seaweed on the beach made it very smelly and also lots of flies. Beautiful apart from that!

June 2021

May 2021

October 2019

A lovely place to walk too on the way to Looe. Hard work back up the hill to polperro, bit it's worth it!

October 2018

The coastal walk from Polperro to Talland Bay is outstanding. As both are scenic, (and Talland Bay benefits from an excellent cafe and free toilets), it makes for an excellent morning or afternoon trip in good weather.

Yes, we enjoyed our stay, but were unable to get in contact with the owner at all, before or during the holiday, so the key info, and a lack of hot water problem, were made more difficult. Sam at your Cornwall branch was excellent, she helped sort us out.

Thank you for your feedback, and we are so sorry that the owner's phone was off. We are pleased to have been of assistance instead, and glad that you did still enjoy your holiday.

December 2022

We really enjoyed our stay at the walled garden, it was so peaceful and quiet and loved watching all the birds on the feeders. The cottage was warm and cosy and very well equipped and Janet left us an excellent welcome pack. We would love to return in the future.

A beautiful property in a beautiful location.

September 2020

November 2019

Wonderful, cosy and warm cottage, very well equipped and a fabulous welcome basket on arrival. Two generous log baskets, kindling and coal added to the comfort on cold November nights. Janet was a very helpful host and we loved watching the birds from the comfort of our bedroom, especially the barn owl. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat.

October 2019

A cosy and secluded 'old world' cottage, just right for quiet contemplation in the garden, photography and wildlife.

August 2019

Our second visit to the Walled garden and every bit as lovely as the first. A perfect place to escape from it all and just ‘be’. Our energetic border collie ‘Scout’ would also like to say a big thanyou, she absolutely loves the paddock! The most well equipped cottage we’ve ever stayed at. Thank you so much Jan & Hedley for another fantastic break. Tan & Adrian. Braintree, Essex.

July 2019

The cottage was easily accessible from the main Looe road once we knew how to find the turning. The cottage was very quite. no other dwellings within earshot. We were given a good welcome by the owner including a generous welcome pack and coffee capsules for the coffee machine. It was close enough to Looe and accessible to the surrounding area. more than enough space for the dog to explore within the bounds of the property.

We were given a good welcome by the owner including a generous welcome pack and coffee capsules for the coffee machine. It was close enough to Looe and accessible to the surrounding area. More than enough space for the dog to explore within the bounds of the property. Plenty of wildlife around including feeding birds in the garden.

Best rental property we have had!

November 2018

We had such a wonderful stay at The Walled Garden; From the moment we opened the gate I knew I was going to love it. The surroundings are stunning, it’s peaceful, tranquil and just what is needed when you want to escape the world for a break away. The cottage is beautiful, so cosy and so well equipped, in fact the best equipped place we have ever stayed. Jan, the owner had left a beautiful hamper of Cornish delights which was so welcome after a long journey, and there were fresh flowers all in different rooms. The cottage has all you want and more, and Jan is on hand if you need her. I can’t wait to return to The Walled Garden and cannot recommend it highly enough. If I could move in I would! Thank you for a wonderful gem of a place, so pleased we found it.

September 2018

beautiful location and cottage was ace. very well equiped and the garden was magical. pity about water heater but did not stop us enjoying the break

July 2018

We had the most wonderful stay at The Walled Garden and cannot praise the property, location and Janet the host enough. If you like seclusion, this is the property for you. Your only neighbours will be the local wildlife and the sheep and cattle. The garden is secure if you have dogs, and the garden has a lovley cottage garden feel to it. There is a super old tree that houses lots of bird feeders, where you can spot lots of different species along with a few squirrels. The bed linen and towels provided are of a high quality, and Janet has thought of everything you could possibly need, including hairdryer and posh coffee machine. The location of the property is idea for exploring the surrounding area, including Polperro, Fowey and Mevaggisy. There are also lots of National Trust properties nearby. Janet provided us with a beautiful hamper of local produce which along with the fresh flowers was very much appreciated. To sum up, this is an absolute gem of a property, and we will be back.

July 2018

Excellent stay, perfect for the dog. Everything provided very well equipped. Jan is the perfect host. So peacefull and the ultimate bird feeder in the garden.

June 2018

perfect - the owner was waiting for us, she explained how everything in the cottage worked. She left us the most amazing welcome pack, and beautiful flowers. Fabulous

June 2018

The stay was fantastic the place was spotlessly clean, Jan was lovely enough to leave a welcome basket, milk, cream tea, tea, coffee. There were fresh flowers in every room. The bed was comfey, out in the middle of nowhere the neighbors were 6 sheep and a heard of cows. Spent ages in the garden, watching the wildlife. Met Jan a couple of time, she popped round to see if everything was fine or we needed anything else. Then a little later as she was planting more tree saplings, telling us there was still moor she wanted to do with the palace! Have already reserved a week here next year and already looking forward to it! Would highly recommend this place, just not to too many people, want to make sure we get our week there! Thanks Jan and Toad Hall

June 2018

We have never stayed in such a well-equipped holiday cottage. Even better, Janet the owner was there to greet us with milk, bread & a lovely cream tea. Really appreciated the fresh flowers too - thank you Janet. Idyllic setting with just 6 sheep for near neighbours. Close to East Looe (shops & beach) although West Looe (rocky Hannafore Beach) was much better if you have a dog.

November 2017

Beautiful place very happy. Janet was a star.

October 2017

A warm welcome at the cottage , after a very short notice booking. The cottage was even better than described , very well equipped for our stay. Beautiful surroundings , with a safe ,fully enclosed garden. Although only a short drive to surrounding villages you get the feeling you're in the middle of nowhere once you step through the gate to The Walled Garden. A lovely welcome pack , and logs for the fire. Can't recommend highly enough .

October 2017

Perfect in every detail. A lovely pretty quiet little cottage. So peaceful. A real chill out retreat. The fresh flowers and cream tea hamper were a lovely surprise. Jan was there to welcome us and she was so lovely. Nothing was too much trouble. Will defiantly be booking this beautiful little cottage again. Thank you for a wonderful week away.

October 2017

Attention to detail and thoughtful little extras for guests was very much appreciated. The only slight problem we experienced was from the smoke alarm which was fitted almost directly above the gas hob and made cooking or heating food a nightmare ! A pretty little cottage and lovely garden and grounds. Enjoyed our stay.

October 2017

We very much appreciated how well equipped the cottage was.

September 2017

The cottage is in a lovely setting, immaculate and has absolutely everything one would need. The personal touches provided by the owner included fresh flowers and a welcome basket with bread, milk, scones jam cream and biscuits. Such a lovely thing to do. Our dog enjoyed running around the extensive garden and it was lovely to sit and watch the birds that visited the feeders all day. I would definitely stay here again, such a find!!

August 2017

We both loved staying at the Walled Garden. Janet the owner was there to greet us on our arrival, showed us around the property, gave us a welcome leaflet pack and best of all a bunch of flowers and a basket containing scones, saffron loaf, a small loaf of bread, milk, butter, clotted cream and jam. The cottage contained everything you needed for a great stay and the cupboards full of cutlery, crockery, pans, oven utensils and cleaning products. Janet had thought of everything. The garden area was beautiful and we got to sit out in the evening (weather permitting) watching the cows and sheep. The cottage was beautifully decorated and had the best bed I've ever slept in. Only drawback was about a two mile walk into Looe along a very narrow and busy road (Janet had recommended not to do it, So glad we took her advice). A wonderful peaceful holiday in a rural setting.

July 2017

The walled garden was a real home from home, it was spotlessly clear had everything you could ever want in it and more. On arrival we were welcomed by Janet who told us everything we needed to know. The welcome basket was a lovely treat at the end of a long journey. The position of the cottage makes it ideal for a quiet relaxing holiday., with only the sheep and birds for neighbours. Don't change a thing about it, it is wonderful just as it is. We would love to come back and visit it again soon. Thank you Janet for everything.

July 2017

We had an excellent time the cottages is very well equipped and in a beautiful setting. Janet the owner is very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. The cottage garden is absolutely gorgeous and our dogs really enjoyed playing in the field. We will definitely be going back highly recommended

July 2017

The Walled Garden is a peaceful haven, very private and a good base from which to explore south east Cornwall. The garden teems with wildlife that will keep you amused for hours. Regular visitors included two lesser spotted woodpeckers, countless tits and a nuthatch. One day, there was a humming bird moth and there was a kingfisher just down the lane. Really comfortable cottage, homely and well equipped. Jan is the perfect hostess - there when you want her but not obtrusive and her welcome pack was appreciated.

May 2017

It's a lovely place to stay, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

May 2017

Lovely cottage with beautiful garden and access to a secure paddock area. Very quiet with fabulous views. Janet the owner is very welcoming and we really appreciated the welcome pack, perfect after a long journey. A great location for a relaxing holiday for us and our dogs. We look forward to returning.

May 2017

A lovely cottage. Small but very well equipped - perfect for 2! Met the owner Janet who was lovely and very helpful. A great little hamper with bread, milk, scones, jam and cream plus biscuits waiting for us on arrival. Lovely quiet location but only 5 minutes drive from Looe and 15/20 minutes from Liskard. You do need to follow the directions closely as it is easy to drive past (Janet say the sign is nearly ready!). Would definitely stay there again - please don't change a thing!!

May 2017

Perfect in every way , warm wellcome by owner , 10/10 on everything

April 2017

A warm welcome by Jan Elphick who had stocked the cottage with bread, milk and basic essentials for our stay. We enjoyed our stay very much in this quiet, comfortable and cosy cottage set in idyllic souroundings. It was a little dificult to find first time as we managed to drive past it and ended up on a farm track in open countryside. Jan Elphic found us and escorted us back to the cottage.
