You'll find beautiful Strand above the Ferryboat Inn, reached by going down a set of steps from the parking area, and once inside, you'll see the amazing view. Through the open-plan lounge, out of the French doors and you're on the balcony, looking down upon the Helford River, the beach and a colourful array of boats. Pull up a chair or a sun lounger and settle down for some serious relaxation in the sunshine. It’s a great space for lazy morning coffee and warm buttery croissants, or for the family to gather over an early supper. Inside there’s a comfortable living room, well-equipped kitchen and 2 bedrooms, all just a stone’s throw from the water.

Helford Passage nestles on the banks of the beautiful river Helford, with a sandy beach and direct access to the South West Coastal Path.  There’s plenty to do on site including hire of kayaks or paddle boards to get you out on the water, or if you prefer, try the heated outdoor swimming pool (open from May 1st until the end of September). The Ferryboat Inn specialises in seafood dishes and holds regular music and quiz nights. The local ferry can take you across to pretty Helford village where you can meander along the shore to explore Daphne Du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek.

Accessed down a flight of fourteen steps.

Entrance hall leading to Bedroom 1 and 5ft king-sized bed with a large wardrobe, drawers and a hand basin.

Bedroom two with twin 3ft twin beds or a super-king. Please advise us of your preference at the time of booking.

Family bathroom with double walk-in shower, hand basin, heated towel rail and WC.

Large open plan living space with sofas, Smart TV, DVD player and stunning river views.

Dining area with table and seating for four.

Contemporary kitchen area, fully equipped with integrated hob and oven, fridge, freezer, combined washer-drier, microwave and dishwasher. Patio doors from the living area onto terrace.

Patio area with river views accessed from the living room, furnished with garden table, chairs and sun loungers.

Lying on the wooded banks of the Helford River is the little hamlet of Helford Passage. Located between Falmouth and the Lizard Peninsular, it is arguably one of the most picturesque estuaries in the county and deserves its title of the ‘jewel in Cornwall’s crown’.

Whitewashed cottages line a small sheltered beach where colourful boats anchor on the sand. Right on the edge of the beach sits the famous Ferry Boat Inn, a cosy 300-year-old pub with a terrace overlooking the water and a toasty open fire come winter. Being so close to the water, The Ferry Boat serves delicious, freshly caught seafood, as well as an array of pub classics. Helford Passage is also home to a brilliant little gift shop, Shop @ the Beach, where you can pick up unique, handmade and locally produced gifts to remind you of your holiday.

The best way to spend your Helford River holiday is in, on or by the water! Hop on the passenger ferry and cross the river to the little village of Helford, or hire kayaks and explore the many creeks and inlets of the river, including Frenchman’s Creek, immortalised by Daphne du Maurier’s novel. Try your hand at paddle boarding, set sail on a dinghy or grab a snorkel and mask and discover life below the water. If you’d rather stay on dry land, nothing beats the simple pleasure of dangling a crab line into the water to see how many crusty creatures you can collect.

Two of Cornwall’s prettiest gardens, Trebah and Glendurgan, line the banks of the Helford River and offer great days out for all the family. Run by the National Trust, Glendurgan’s myriad of subtropical valleys are filled with exotic plants, an impressive maze and a giant rotating rope swing, while Trebah Gardens span over four miles with adventure playgrounds, childrens trails and an amphitheatre where you can catch music, dance, theatre and comedy performances.

The South West Coast Path runs alongside the Helford River, offering miles of breathtaking coastal walks. If you’re feeling energetic, head east through Trebah and Glendurgan gardens, following the headland for a four mile walk to Maenporth beach. Keep an eye out for the vibrant array of wildlife, including kingfishers, little egrets, herons and cormorants.

When it comes to beach days, you’re spoilt for choice. As well as the pretty cove at Helford Passage, Durgan, Castle, Maenporth, Swanpool and Gyllyngvase beach are all within five miles. Within a ten minute drive, you’ll reach the bustling maritime town of Falmouth, home to the National Maritime Museum, Pendennis Castle and a vibrant array of cafés, bars, restaurants, shops and art galleries.

Designated parking space for 1 car. Further parking is available in the non-residents' car park, just a stroll up the hill, at a charge of £2 per day.

  • Included: Bed linen, towels (guests must provide their own beach towels), wall panel heating, electricity and Wi-Fi.

July 2023

We stayed above the Ferryboat Inn and used it several times for an evening meal. Delicious food, good portions and service was friendly. As it was warm and sunny, we were able to enjoy the gorgeous view over the river too. It's a hidden gem of an area with the added bonus of a good eating and drinking place

Very good food from here and nice staff - we had a few meals and also drinks

June 2023

Had a great meal here - great menu with super specials using local ingredients every day.

June 2023

Lovely pub on the River, food was very nice. One small thing to be aware of, we tried to book Sunday lunch only to be told they are booking around 2 weeks in advance! Just a heads up to book if you were planning a trip, I guess that must be an indication of the food! We enjoyed our mid week meal though, staff were friendly and efficient but unobtrusive. Food was good quality and reasonably priced. We’d be happy to return again.

February 2023

Lovely, friendly pub with lots of dogs. We have been coming to The Ferryboat Inn for years. It was particularly enjoyable out of season, in January, although still sufficient numbers of locals and visitors to provide atmosphere. The hake chowder is particularly good!

January 2023

Fab great food

July 2022

Amazing food and drink options and lovely service however opening hours should ideally be extended and more food options at lunchtime would make it even better. It was brilliant when they did the takeaway options as well as main food options

November 2021

Very friendly and efficient staff. Food delicious. Setting perfect.

October 2021

Stunning pub right on the river - top quality food and service - one of the best fish and chips out there!!!

October 2021

We’ve been here a number of times previous to our most recent visit in October, and eaten on each occasion - hence we keep coming back..!! However on this occasion, we found the place (inside) totally lacking atmosphere. I guess that could be a hangover from the impact of the pandemic, but the staff were very lacklustre too - helpful, but they didn’t look like they were enjoying it. We have to say though, the food was as flavourful as ever - brilliant. Could have done with a little more adventure in the menu, as well as having some starters, but the quality was great.

October 2021

Unfortunately we were not able to visit during our time in Helford Passage as there were long queues. This may get better when people start to go abroad again. Food on offer looked good.

September 2021

Charles, manager, very helpful & professional. Good food. Many thanks

Faultless! We have seen the FBI through many incarnations over the decades. I think the current crew is quite possibly the best. Excellent food and AMAZING service sometimes in very testing conditions, not all customers are nice! We eat there frequently, sometimes daily, less so this year because the weather was not so good so had a few away days, but we ate breakfast, excellent innovation!, lunch and supper. Congratulations and thanks to you all

Excellent pub - great food and service would pop in again.

October 2021

The staff were brilliant but the food was just average, I'm afraid. We would not be likely to go there again.

June 2021

We ate here in the first couple of days of our stay. The staff were very friendly, as were the 'locals' and there is a good choice of seating areas and a varied menu. Food quality was very good and the service was prompt, all at a fair price. Would definitely go back. The Boar burger was lush !!

Helford Passage
(Less than a mile)

This pretty sand and pebble beach dotted with boats pulled up on the sand, and backed by whitewashed cottages, is one of our favourites. Kids can play, splash in the water or explore the rockpools exposed at low tide, or the more adventurous can hire a kayak, paddleboard or small boat to explore the estuary. Sit back in the 300 year old Ferry Boat Inn for lunch and a cool drink before perhaps taking the ferry across the water to Helford Village (operating in summer months only). Alternatively there are wonderful walks in both directions with fabulous views where you can spot a wealth of birdlife and sometimes seals. Back at the beach along with the pub there is a car park and toilets, ice cream kiosk and beach shop.  Swimming is safe here but bathers should be aware of boats launching and general river traffic. Dogs allowed all year round.

July 2020

Lovely little beach, with rock pools and a pub right on the edge. Helford River Boats offer some great water activities as well.

August 2019

This is my heaven or earth. We've been coming here for over thirty years. We've made some good friends, have lots of favourite haunts; love the river and the area. We brought our children here, they bring their children now. Always difficult to leave, always with a tear in my eye. Helford passage is unique, traditional and slightly old fashioned, in a good way! If you seek glamour and bling, go somewhere else. This is where children go rock pooling, learn to sail and water ski, catch crabs and jump off the pontoon into the sea, where they make sand castle and eat sand sandwiches on the beach, Where mums and grannies bring a pot of tea (or a glass of wine) to the beach to chat with friends, It's where families dress down rather than up, not really for 'strutting your stuff"! It is quintessentially English and throughly good for the soul! And the weather is often quite good!

August 2019

The beach is a mixture of sand, shingle and pebbles. Rock pools at low tide. Very safe for children. Beach covered at high tide. Ideal for boating enthusiasts and always plenty to watch. Very quiet location - only pub and kiosk.

August 2019

Durgan Beach
(Less than a mile)

(1)

Owned by the National Trust, the scattering of cottages that make up the tiny village of Durgan form a pretty backdrop to this sand and shingle beach.  With stunning views in both directions over the Helford River, Durgan has strong boating links and there is a slipway running down to the beach and moorings offshore.  This south facing beach is a peaceful place to relax on the sand and watch the boats go by while children play in the rockpools. If you forget your bucket, spade or net you can borrow one from the National Trust Fish Cellar building which also sells teas, coffee and ice creams during the summer months.  Like many of the beaches along the Helford, Durgan Beach is almost entirely covered during the highest tides so keep an eye on the tide times. There is no parking in Durgan itself, however, there is a carpark on the main road and signposted path to the village and beach. Dogs welcome all year round.

We visited a couple of times. It was just as good as ever. National Trust staff could not man the shop on the beach during one visit so we really missed our ice cream treat on that occasion!

Bosahan Cove
(Less than a mile)

This is a real gem but quite tricky to access, so it’s not for everyone. Almost hidden on the southern banks of the Helford River, this idyllic sand and shingle cove is surrounded by thick woodland and is a fantastic spot to swim or sunbathe, often without another soul in sight. To get there either cut through the gardens of the Bosahan estate (summer months only, admission charges apply), bring a small boat or walk about a mile along the coast path from Helford Village. No amenities due to its location, dogs allowed all year round.

Grebe Beach
(Less than a mile)

(1)

A quiet and secluded shingle beach on the Helford River in between the villages of Durgan and Mawnan. Access is via a short woodland walk from Durgan and then a steep path down to the beach, which means it’s rarely crowded and ideal if you prefer peace and quiet to cafes and facilities, of which there are none. The water is safe for swimming here and there are rocky outcrops to explore and jump off. It’s worth bearing in mind though that while there is a large beach at low water, with the highest tides it’s completely covered. Dogs welcome all year round.

This beach would probably be a problem for pushchairs but is a little more secluded. We met a lot of dog walkers.

Bream Cove
(2 miles)

A pretty sheltered cove in a secluded setting surrounded by low cliffs and woodland, Bream Cove consists of a sand and shingle beach dipping down to clear water with excellent swimming and snorkelling.  At low water rock pools are exposed which children will love to explore and it’s possible to scramble over the rocks to the sandy beach next door at Gatamala Cove. There are no facilities here and no car park, but there are parking spaces on the nearby road between Maenporth and Rosemullion Head close to the Meuden Hotel, with access to the beach via footpath. Dogs welcome all year.

Not sure bars above are working. All excellent other than the small points in the first box.

Thank you for those comments. Our practice is to leave a small pouch with a few dishwasher and laundry tablets, plus bin bags and a small washing up liquid. This is designed to get you started during your first day or two. I'm so sorry if we didn't leave a pouch for you on this occasion. If you are visiting again, please ring the local office as we try to sort out any issues during your stay.

October 2023

The views from this property are outstanding. The mornings on the balcony were extremely peaceful, with just the lapping of water on the shore. There was a little bit of noise (music) from the pub in the evening but this didn’t bother us at all. Would definitely recommend and hopefully return again.

We have stayed here before and love its location for the views. It’s a lovely well appointed apartment.

We had a fantastic stay - the weather was amazing Loved the proximity to the beach and also being able to get over to Helford by boat - would love to stay over there one day Also loved having the pool and often had it to ourselves - so lucky!

May 2023

We had a fantastic, relaxing week at The Strand, we had great weather so we were able to make use of the balcony/terrace with sun from early morning until about 6. Comfortable, cosy and extremely well equipped, we ate in a few times and didn't miss anything we would have had at home. Loved the welcome pack. There is noise (chatter) from the pub but that didn't bother us at all it is not too intrusive. Would love to stay again, really missing that view which you can see from both sofa's as well as the terrace

We stayed for a week in March 2023. . Right next to the beach, the apartment is lovely - warm, comfortable and well equipped with a gorgeous view over the Helford River from the terrace. Two good sized bedrooms and ample living space in the kitchen/diner/sitting room. Being above the pub adds to the buzz but was not a bother to us in any way. Highly recommended.

It sounds like you enjoyed a wonderful holiday with us at Helford Passage! Many thanks for taking the time to review your stay. We look forward to seeing you both again in the summer!

Many thanks for your comments. We love the apartment too, and the balcony with its great river views!

June 2021

This was our 40th year ( should have been in 2020 but that was postponed ) and we just love the location

It's great that you love the area so much, and have now introduced Helford Passage to your grandchildren! We're really pleased you enjoyed your time us again this year (despite the Cornish mizzle!). We look forward to welcoming you back in 2022!

July 2020

Apart from the smell of cigarette smoke from the ajacent property entering one premises and the dirty balcony our stay was super. .

I am so sorry you experienced these issues at the property. We have had issues with patios cleans this year because of the lock-down; normally we would have them, and the garden furniture, power-washed at the start of the season but just couldn't get the tradesmen in before opening up. As a regular guest to Helford Passage, I can appreciate your disappointment on this occasion.

Perfect accommodation to watch life on the Helford pass you by.

We agree with you! The apartment, recently refurbished, is looking great and has everything you need for your holiday! Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
