Rainbow Cottage, one of three perfectly converted barns, is nestled in the hillside, overlooking Porthallow. Part of old Pengarrock Farm that goes back to the 1200s this spacious cottage combines traditional features like exposed beams and slate floors and a wood burner stove for those chilly evenings  There’s a cosy lounge with widescreen TV and patio doors opening onto the garden, three comfortable bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen and two bath/shower rooms with a large, communal garden with views of the countryside down to Porthallow Cove, mid point on the South-West Coastal Path with miles of beautiful cliff-side walks.

Porthallow, meaning ‘Port at the end of the Moor’,  is a small, tucked-away village on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula. It was once a busy pilchard fishing port in fact, the old pilchard cellars can still be seen near the pebbly beach. Visit the Five Pilchards Inn, full of nautical memorabilia,  just off the beach.  A mile offshore is the Manacles Reef, a rocky outcrop, and the cause of countless historical shipwrecks. It’s a popular site for diving, accessed from the neighbouring Porthkerris Cove, where you can hire the gear, or book a boat trip to snorkel with the basking sharks. Nearby St Keverne has a handful of shops, two inns and a cluster of whitewashed cottages, all huddled around the village square, and overlooked by the impressive 15th Century church, St Akervnus.

Porthallow Beach
(Less than a mile)

(6)

A small sheltered pebble beach with lovely views where fishermen used to launch their boats in their hundreds. Today there are still a few working fishing boats pulled up on the shore and the unspoilt village has a popular pub, aptly named The Five Pilchards. Car parking literally on the beach so not far to carry all the kit, lots of rockpools exposed at low tide and great snorkeling just offshore.

September 2023

A very quiet beach. Great coastal walks with stunning views over the sea.

May 2023

Gorgeous beach and easy to get to the sea. Shale and rock beach but enough space for kids to enjoy themselves

August 2022

lovely quite pebble beach, pub right on the beach with public toilets

June 2021

A lovely sheltered beach of rocks and pebbles so no good for sandcastles etc. We visited regularly after 7 pm and not during the day and it was almost always deserted (Spring bank holiday week) Great to just watch the waves roll in and soak up the ambience.

June 2021

Beautiful but not much going on.

Godrevy Cove & Leggan Cove
(2 miles)

Godrevy Cove is a lovely sandy beach over 300m in length and unlike other beaches in the area, there is still plenty of sand at high water.  Access is via the Coast Path but it’s not a difficult walk, only about 500m from the hamlet of Rosenithon where you can leave the car on the road. There’s good swimming and snorkelling here, as well as rock pools at low tide and the beach is never crowded. You can also access next door Leggan Cove across the foreshore at low water, a similar but smaller and more sheltered beach.

Bosahan Cove
(3 miles)

This is a real gem but quite tricky to access, so it’s not for everyone. Almost hidden on the southern banks of the Helford River, this idyllic sand and shingle cove is surrounded by thick woodland and is a fantastic spot to swim or sunbathe, often without another soul in sight. To get there either cut through the gardens of the Bosahan estate (summer months only, admission charges apply), bring a small boat or walk about a mile along the coast path from Helford Village. No amenities due to its location, dogs allowed all year round.

Love.y beach, steep steps

September 2023

Absolutely beautiful and locals very friendly, only downfall drinks pricey.

July 2019

Grebe Beach
(3 miles)

(1)

A quiet and secluded shingle beach on the Helford River in between the villages of Durgan and Mawnan. Access is via a short woodland walk from Durgan and then a steep path down to the beach, which means it’s rarely crowded and ideal if you prefer peace and quiet to cafes and facilities, of which there are none. The water is safe for swimming here and there are rocky outcrops to explore and jump off. It’s worth bearing in mind though that while there is a large beach at low water, with the highest tides it’s completely covered. Dogs welcome all year round.

Yes we enjoyed our stay. It was comfortable and peaceful. The scrumpy, milk, butter, cream and biscuits were a nice touch and much appreciated. The owners were friendly and helpful. It is a lovely location.

October 2022

Enjoyed stay however although followed instructions from you on how to get there, there was no signage once we passed the white hart pub despite your instructions saying so. Nice meal at The New Inn in Manaccan and land lady very friendly. Would recommend. A few of the pubs recommended were closed for refurbishment. No Toad Hall voucher visible for seal sanctuary as per welcome folder however got discount on presentation of booking confirmation.

Yes we really enjoyed our stay , very quiet and relaxing, home from home .

Wonderful! We hope to welcome you back in the future.

September 2022

The three of us who finally managed to get there on Saturday had a wonderful stay. I have never been in a self-catering facility that offered such a high level of equipment, totally a home from home. The bottle of Scrumpy, Cornish Fairings and flowers were a lovely touch- just a shame that with our vehicle breaking down, my husband and the dogs couldn't join us.

Oh, I'm so sorry your husband and dogs weren't able to join you - how disappointing! I do hope you'll take them back to Rainbow Cottage in the future. I have emailed you separately as we can refund the monies paid for the dogs. Many thanks, and so happy you enjoyed your stay!

August 2022

If you want peace and quite this is the place to go. There’s also a large garden

August 2022

We had a lovely stay. Peaceful location and great garden. Good location with lots to do in the area within reasonable travel time. Fat Apples cafe great for breakfast. Kitchen diner a bit tight with very limited workspace for anyone wanting to cook. Bathmats could do with replacing. Otherwise we had a great holiday here.

Thanks so much for your comments! We will certainly look into the bathmat situation. So pleased you enjoyed your holiday with us!

July 2022

We enjoyed our break at Rainbow Cottage which was beautifully presented, quiet and peaceful in stunning countryside. Lorraine (the housekeeper) was lovely and had made everything so clean, comfortable and welcoming and we very much appreciated the welcome gifts. We were disappointed that most of the pubs and cafes only opened on certain days and we were surprised at this seeing as it was June. Also booking was necessary at some eateries and we particularly wanted to go to The Halzephron who would only take phone bookings which we couldn’t do as we had no signal. We drove over there one day but they were very busy and fully booked. This of course isn’t any fault of Toad Hall Cottages but perhaps it might be a good idea to mention in your description about the poor phone signal in this area. We had very mixed weather which was a shame and so we were very thankful for the house was so lovely and so on some days we could just chill out and watch Wimbledon! This was our first time booking with Toad Hall Cottages and seeing as we go away quite regularly and with various self-catering companies we will most definitely look at your website again as overall everything was excellent! Thank you!

I'm so sorry we didn't have up-to-date information on local eateries. I, too, am surprised on the restricted opening times. I'm pleased you had a good weather overall though! Yes, you are quite right; the sign on the turning had blown away and we hadn't noticed. Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention! I do hope we'll see you again in the future!

May 2022

Isn't it such a peaceful spot! Our apologies about the directions - the sign must have blown away. I'll correct it right now. Many thanks for letting us know!

April 2022

Thanks for a wonderful stay. Perfectly located and appointed for receiving local (St Keverne) family guests and accommodating Grandparents, Parents and grandson. So much to do and see, so many memories.

That's wonderful to hear! I think that, if the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that time spent with our loved ones is the best time of all! We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

We had a great stay, first part week back after lockdown, both Toad Cottages and the Owner were extremely helpful. It was a wonderful break and we will certainly return to this beautiful cottage with wonderful views of the woodland and sea.

Thank you so much for your kind words. The cottages are in such a peaceful location - perfect for a post-lockdown break!

October 2020

Very good overall

July 2020

we really enjoyed our stay as the house is in a beautiful location, great for walking the dog. We were glad there were gates on the stairs. It has a view of the sea from the terrace and garden to entice us to walk down the hill to Porthallow. We could drive to various local beaches and towns for shopping and anything we needed, as well as further afield if it could add to our holiday. Thankyou for an enjoyable relaxing holiday.

You are very welcome! Porthallow really is a beautiful hamlet, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the countryside. We do hope to see you again in the future!
