Danecroft, a delightful 1920’s semi-detached house, traditionally and comfortably furnished is located on the outskirts of Brixham, with off road-parking for two cars. There’s a beautifully tended sunny rear garden which is mostly lawn but guests can also help themselves to the herbs, rhubarb, raspberries and apples if staying in the appropriate season. At the front of the house there are far reaching views to be enjoyed from the twin bedroom and single bedroom over allotments to the sea!

Less than a 5-minute walk from the doorstep will lead to the small shingle beach of Fishcombe Cove, from where guests can enjoy lots of rock pools or just have a drink in the café (please note this café is seasonal). From here one can join the famous South West Coast path and enjoy the stunning scenery that comes with being in an area of outstanding natural beauty. A 10-minute walk (or a short bus ride) in the other direction will lead guests to the centre of Brixham, which is located on the southern tip of Torbay, or The English Riviera as it is better known. The busy fishing town has one of the largest fleets of trawlers in the country and is made up of narrow little streets that wind their way down to the bustling harbour where all of the activity takes place. There are plenty of traditional shops showcasing locally made souvenirs, crafts and foods. One can even take a dip in Shoalstone pool, an outdoor seawater lido, one of only a few left in the country.

Those looking to entertain the family can head to Paignton, home to a selection of attractions including the very popular Paignton Zoo, the Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway and Splashdown waterpark. There are also two beautiful national trust properties only a short drive away, Coleton Fishacre with its Arts and Crafts style house and 24 acres of landscaped gardens; and the delightful Greenway House and Gardens, the holiday home of the famous and much-loved author Agatha Christie and her family.

Ground floor: front door to porch and original stained-glass door to entrance hallway with stairs to first floor. Sitting room with feature fireplace (please note, just decorative and not a working fireplace), two sofas, armchair, TV with Blu-ray DVD player and feature bay window overlooking front garden. Kitchen with built-in electric oven, gas hob, undercounter fridge, undercounter freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave breakfast table with seating for 4. Door to cloakroom with WC and basin. Dining room with piano, table and seating for 5 and door to garden room with chairs and views over rear garden.

First floor: landing with doors to all rooms. Bedroom 1 with 4ft 6 double bed and lovely views over the rear garden and Brixham beyond. Bedroom 2 with 2 x 3ft single beds and bay window enjoying views over the front garden, allotments and sea in the distance. Bedroom 3 with 3ft single bed and views over front garden, allotments and sea in the distance. Large family bathroom with WC, basin, bath, walk-in shower (with hand-held attachment) and heated towel rail.

To the front of the property there is a level lawn garden (not enclosed) with planted borders and driveway. To the rear there is a generous-sized fully-enclosed level garden, partly laid to lawn with planted borders with two patio areas, perfect for alfresco dining. To the far end of the garden there is a further seating area and either side of the path is filled with fuschia, roses, lavender, clematis, honeysuckle, rasberry canes and even an apple tree (do help yourself to the delicious rasberries and apples!).

Home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the country, life in the historic harbour town of Brixham revolves around the sea. Pretty, pastel coloured fishermen’s cottages line narrow streets that lead down to a busy working harbour, where hundreds of fishing boats head out to sea, bringing back their daily catch to Brixham’s famous fish market.

It’s no surprise that fresh fish and seafood fill the menus of the restaurants dotted around the harbour. Tuck into a delicious plate of fresh seafood after watching it arrive on the day boats at Rockfish Seafood Restaurant. Owned by celebrity chef Mitch Tonks, this popular seafood restaurant is set right in the heart of the fish market with a large terrace overlooking the harbour, as well as a takeaway, so you can grab some fish ‘n’ chips and eat them on the quayside.

Kids and adults alike fall in love with Brixham’s maritime history. Climb aboard the Golden Hind Museum Ship, a magnificent replica of Sir Francis Drake’s flagship docked in the harbour, and experience the sights, sounds and smells of life onboard the Tudor ship. Take part in Brixham’s annual swashbuckling Pirate Festival, and learn about the people and events that shaped the town’s history at the Brixham Heritage Museum.

With the South West Coast Path running through the town, Brixham is a great place for walkers and dog-friendly holidays. A holiday in Brixham isn’t complete without following the coast path to Berry Head Nature Reserve, a stunning headland famed for its geological significance, Napoleonic War fortifications, diverse wildlife and popular Guardhouse Café.

If you’re looking for a day on the beach, the coast path will lead you to lots of idyllic coves with crystal clear water perfect for swimming. Breakwater Beach, right in the centre of town, is a popular choice for families, thanks to its Blue Flag award, easy access, toilet facilities and beachside café. Or why not take the plunge in Shoalstone Outdoor Pool, an art deco seawater lido set in a stunning position on the seafront.

Brixham is a brilliant base for exploring the English Riviera. Climb aboard the Dartmouth Steam Railway and head to Paignton or set sail on one of the many boat trips to Torquay. Make sure to keep an eye out for wildlife on the way as you might be lucky enough to spot seals and dolphins!

If you haven’t found your sea legs, there’s plenty to keep you occupied on dry land. If you’re an art lover, head to the Strand Art Gallery where you can watch the local artists as they work. For Agatha Christie fans, a trip to Greenway is essential. This magnificent National Trust property, her former holiday home, was the inspiration for many of her crime thrillers and offers a glimpse through the eyes of her spectacular mind.

A holiday cottage in Brixham offers an ideal base for couples and families to enjoy a relaxed seaside holiday with a fantastic selection of things to do and places to eat on your doorstep.

This is one of only two full size replicas of the Golden Hind. Well worth a visit for the fascinating history. Plenty to see and read about and also has bad 'dad jokes', a challenge to see how many little skeletons you can find and a 'how to find yee pirate name' to keep younger ones amused.

Berry Head Nature Reserve
(2 miles)

(1)

Discover 400 million years of history at Berry Head Nature Reserve. This stunning headland is an internationally acclaimed heritage site, recognised for its geological significance, as well as its Napoleonic War fortifications. Walk the ramparts of the fortress as the soldiers did over 200 years ago whilst taking in the stunning panoramic views of Torbay and beyond. Berry Head is a must-visit day out, which is open all year and is free to visit. Enjoy superb coastal walks and spot a variety of wildlife on land and at sea, including porpoises and dolphins! There’s a great visitor centre with lots of information about the headland, its wildlife and history, children’s activities, films and trails for you to follow. Dogs are very welcome at Berry Head Nature Reserve, making it a great doggy day out – although leads may be required in certain areas. A trip to Berry Head wouldn’t be complete without a bite to eat at the Guardhouse Café, a popular, dog-friendly café serving fresh, locally produced breakfasts, lunches and Devon cream teas. There is a car park at Berry Head, but you can also walk up from Brixham along the South West Coast Path.

Fishcombe Cove
(Less than a mile)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

Churston Cove
(Less than a mile)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Breakwater Beach

One of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, Breakwater beach is a Blue Flag, shingle beach right next to Brixham’s bustling harbour. With disabled ramps to the promenade and beach, as well as toilet facilities, adjoining parking and a café, this lovely, family-friendly beach is accessible for everyone. Hire out a deckchair and spend the day watching the kids splash about in the safe, clean water, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, learn to scuba dive! Elberry Cove
(2 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

St Mary's Bay
(2 miles)

The decent to St Mary’s Bay is one of the best views in Brixham, with panoramic views of the English Riviera. This beautiful, unspoilt beach has a carpark nearby, but we recommend walking there to make the most of the stunning surroundings. The sandy and shingle beach is sheltered by steep cliffs on either side, which means the decent to the beach isn’t easy, especially for those with mobility disabilities. There are no facilities at the beach, but visitors can take the coast path north to Berry Head Nature Reserve, where there is a great café and toilets, as well as stunning coastal views. Dogs are welcome all year, making St Mary’s Bay a great place to take a well-earned rest on your dog walk.

March 2024

Well where do I start? We absolutely LOVED our stay at Danecroft in March 2024. Easy to find and the location is perfect for a gentle stroll down into Brixham. It's steep going down, with lots of choices of route, so of course steep to return. I'm not particularly fit but found it easy enough, especially if needing to burn off calories from the huge array of fabulous eateries (and mainly real ale for me!) in town!!! Danecroft was built in 1927 and is a wonderful example of an Edwardian family home. The owner Maggie is very proud to tell you about the history. Maggie called us on the phone during the evening of our first night to check all was well. She had also left a lovely Welcome Pack of goodies too. The interior of Danecroft has been carefully furnished with some gorgeous pieces of furniture for the period, which gives it a very warm, homely feel. Gutted I forgot my piano music sheets as the piano is in full working order too! The kitchen is large and well equipped with everything you need for a self-catering holiday. The lounge is roomy and comfortable too. The beds are devine and the bedding is clean, fresh and good quality, as are the towels. Parking was easy to reverse into and the street is one-way, so fairly quiet. No noise from attached neighbour except occassional dog barking but nothing to stress over. Finally the garden... oh how I wish we were there in the main summer. It is long, spacious and very dog friendly, with no gaps... believe me, if there was one, our mini schnauzer would've found it!! Overall, we had an amazing time at Danecroft and would move in tomorrow!! Thank you to Maggie xx

March 2024

We had a fantastic stay, the house was warm and welcoming on our late arrival (10pm). The welcome pack was a an excellent addition which we were not expecting. We found the house to be perfectly situated for all amenities & a great find having relatives living close by, the directions given were concise and easily followed. Only the back bedroom was used but was extremely comfortable, all facilities in the house were in good condition and spotlessly clean. Highly recommended.

March 2024

Had a really lovely stay. Welcome gifts really appreciated. Ideal with 10 month old sprocker. Area dog friendly. Enjoyed good meals at The Prince William , Rockfish and Venus cafe. Good takeaway from Indian/Thai. Hope to return later in the year!

November 2023

Yes. Lots of fresh air, lots of nice walks. Pubs, fish + chip shops all with friendly staff.

August 2023

Very comfortable and well-equipped property. Near to amenities and the lovely harbour but far enough away from the hubbub in the evening. Owners are exceptional providing a lovely welcome pack and having available some additional essential items like washing tablets, kitchen roll, washing-up liquid etc... Most properties don't provide these things so that was a really nice touch, as was the phone call to check we were settled and happy. Would not hesitate to recommend this property to others; we had a lovely time and really enjoyed our stay here.

July 2023

Just returned from our second wonderful holiday at Danecroft. Everything we needed was in the house, plus a nice welcome pack and a telephone call from Maggie to welcome us and to make sure everything was in order.
