Bantam Cottage is situated on the outskirts of the attractive market town of Ottery St Mary, East Devon and about 15 minutes drive from the pretty seaside resort of Sidmouth on the stunning Jurassic coast. The setting is a real delight as it`s home to a range of small farm animals, including Pygmy goats, sheep, pigs and chickens. There are free range eggs and delicious homemade jams, as well as home grown seasonable vegetables, often available from the welcoming owners. This very attractive barn-conversion offers a quality holiday home in the delightful setting of a small family-run farm (it`s just a small-holding - no farm machinery). The self-contained cottage has been thoughtfully designed to offer everything you could wish for in a really comfortable holiday cottage, including fitted kitchen with dishwasher, bathroom with power shower and central heating. The open-plan ground floor living area is light and airy with French windows to a sunny patio area at the rear. Upstairs there are two spacious bedrooms (both of which have beds that can be made up as either king-size or twins) and there`s a newly fitted bathroom.

The town takes its name historically from the many otters that lived on the riverside. Set amongst green Devon countryside and it’s dominated by St Mary’s Church.  The town offers a few shops and a good supermarket. There are a few public houses, café and restaurants in the town.

The surrounding area offers much to do for all age groups, children will have fun at nearby Escot Park (less than 3 miles away).  Keen gardeners will not want to miss the wonderful Otter Nurseries as well as Joshua’s Harvest Store and Restaurant a short stroll from the centre of town.  Walkers will love the beautiful countryside routes on the doorstep (including a lovely stroll to the River Otter to the famous Tumbling Weir). The coast at Sidmouth is around 7 miles and the lovely West Dorset seaside town of Lyme Regis is about 35 minutes’ drive away. An idyllic holiday setting for families and couples, old and young alike.

The ancient town of Ottery St Mary is famous for its impressively imposing Medieval church, and unusual circular tumbling weir on the River Otter. This picturesque town has been a hub of literary inspiration for hundreds of years, most recently featuring in Harry Potter’s adventures as Ottery St Catchpole.

Situated on the edge of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, yet just a 20 minute drive from the Cathedral city of Exeter, visitors to Ottery St Mary will find there’s a huge variety of things to see and do.

The town itself boasts a ramshackle collection of excellent independent shops and eateries, and is a walker’s paradise, with almost 100 different walks to choose from, varying from level walks along the banks of River Otter where you may spot a family of otters or beavers, to hills from where you can enjoy views as far as Dartmoor on a fine day.

Nearby Wildwood at Escot offers a brilliant family day out. Set in over 200 acres of stunning parkland, here you can come face to face with some of the wildlife that used to live in Devon, including red squirrels, lynxes and wild boar. There’s also a maze, hidden playground, drop slide, indoor play barn, and Anglo Saxon village to explore.

For days out by the seaside, the coastal towns of Seaton, Beer, Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are all just a short drive way – each offering access to the magnificent World Heritage Jurassic Coastline, with its impressive cliffs, coastal walks, fossil hunting opportunities and family-friendly beaches to enjoy.

A holiday cottage in Ottery St Mary provides a great base from which to enjoy the many and varied rural and coastal charms of East Devon and neighbouring Dorset.

We have used this tea room in the past but not this time. It used to be a proper tea room now it's a craft and china shop with a few tables in a side room and wasn't open every time we went by.

Best carvery in East Devon by a country mile!

July 2023

Had three meals here in the week we were at Ottery , all excellent especially the carvery. Would recommend booking as it is very popular.

Easily the best carvery and food selection for miles around. But best to book in advance as it gets really busy at peak times, to avoid disappointment.

Have just spent a superb weekend at Pear tree cottage. The house was immaculate, Scones, Jam and cream along with home made apple juice was a lovely surprise. It was lambing time and we were invited to visit the lambs and hold a designate pet lamb. We met the owners who were extremely welcoming and Grandfather who was a really interesting character. The owners went to a lot of effort to ensure our stay was the best it could be and they surpassed our expectations. The location was an ideal base for the places we wanted to visit, the facilities were first class which made our break all the better, including our dog who also received welcome snacks. We would highly recommend this cottage as a fantastic base to visit Devon

This is a big disappointment. Escot House is still shown on the website as having a garden when in reality it is now a feeble attempt at a wildlife park and the entrance fee is extortionate. You can barely see the token animals and the garden itself is totally overgrown and neglected. This was not made clear at reception. If you want to see a real wilding project go to Knepp Castle Estate in West Sussex entry to which is free but don't waste your money here. It's a joke.

April 2023

This is a lovely little place to visit, animals to see and gardens to explore. It’s a little run down and needs a lick of paint in places but worth a visit.

October 2020

Well worth a visit if you have pre-teen kids (and maybe fine for older ones too). My boys had a great time, we were there for a good few hours and they never got bored. Good value for money.

Sidmouth Beach
(7 miles)

(3)

By the seaside town of the same name, Sidmouth Beach is a long stretch of pebbles that stretches from the River Sid at the east of the town, West to Chit Rocks and Jacobs Ladder Beach and beyond.  From the town you go over a footbridge and a number of steps down to the beach, however there are also access points along the sea front esplanade.  There are a number of car parks close by, most of which are a few minutes’ walk from the beach itself, and it benefits from nearby facilities, cafes, restaurants and shops.  Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 1st May to the 30th September, however there is a small area at the East end of the beach where dogs are allowed all year round.  It’s a delightful spot for swimming sailing and surfing if the weather permits it, but you do have to take your own equipment.

lovely beach

July 2018

Visited twice and both times had a pleasant walk along the prom in the sun. Sea very calm. Lovely cup of coffee served from little coffee "bar" on prom served by a charming and coffee knowledgeable American lady. Pleasant and busy shopping area behind the prom. Not much parking and just a little expensive.

Branscombe Beach
(9 miles)

(13)

Nestled into a valley that reaches down to the sea, Branscombe Beach is tucked away on the Jurassic Coast, and is linked to a timeless, magical village of the same name. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, the area is peppered with thatched houses, a working forge and a restored windmill. It’s a National Trust location, with a number of charming walks and trails to follow, one of which leads to the Old Bakery tearooms. The beach itself was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles and is now a long sandy beach. It has a large car park close by where there are toilets available, as well as a picnic area. The beach is a haven for walking, relaxing and adventurous rock-poolers. If you want to catch your supper it’s a wonderful place to fish for mackerel and pollock, although the Beach Shanty Cafe on Branscombe Beach provides excellent local food.

Lovely place for a dog walk along the beach. Such a pity that the sea is eroding the cliffs around here.

April 2024

Attractive beach, good energetic coast path walking.

October 2023

Beautiful Beach with stunning walks in both directions on coastal path. Sea shanty cafe modernised since our last visit. Lovely cream teas!

July 2023

The beach was within walking distance of where we were staying. Excellent for dogs and the sea shanty sells dog icecream

June 2023

Beach clean and has pebbles rather than a sandy beach. Fabulous food found at the Sea Shanty Cafe with sea view and stunning views of the Jurassic coast line.

August 2022

gorgeous beach - we canoed and swam a lot

September 2021

Lovely beach

September 2021

Clean pebble beach. Good facilities cafe shop and toilets. Nice and quiet when we went in july. Lovely walks nearby

July 2021

One of the few beaches we found that had some sand on it, although it also had lots of stones too of course, and dogs were welcome. The option to sit on a grass area next to the beach was a bonus too. I had a swim in the sea whilst there which was lovely.

June 2021

Lovely area but the only place you could get a coffee etc was the Sea Shanty and it was closed half term week!!!!! As the Sea Shanty and the Old Bakery were closed all week for me it let Branscombe down.

February 2020

We loved walking to beach fro Branscombe. If you follow the signs and walk on the road to the beach its quite hilly so take the footpath from behind the cottages opposite the Masons Arms, its a nice flat walk to the beach, easy to follow.

January 2020

Superb beach and surroundings. Tricky drive to get there but well worth it.

June 2018

A pretty place down narrow lanes - the village is a must for keen photographers too - loved it!

September 2017

Beer Beach
(10 miles)

(11)

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline.  Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end.  There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town.  As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location.  There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler.  There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind.  Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

July 2018

Lovely beach at any time but especially lively on festival day. We appreciated the walkways over the pebbles.

June 2018

Beer is a very pretty village!, and the beach is an absolute joy

September 2017

Visited one evening. A beautiful beach. You can walk to Seaton on the coast path, if you feel energetic and don't mind a lot of steps. Well worth it due to the stunning views.

Budleigh Salterton Beach
(10 miles)

(1)

A picturesque two mile pebble beach backed partly with cliffs, with plenty of space and lovely clean clear water.  Along the esplanade there are beach cafes and a car park and it is only a short wander into the village for toilets, shops and pubs.  Care should be taken swimming towards the eastern end of the beach where there can be strong currents due to the River Otter, and there are no lifeguard facilities.

Step back in time to a gentler age here - lovely beach, quaint little town, reminded us of Southward in Suffolk on a smaller scale - we loved it!

September 2017

Seaton Beach
(10 miles)

(7)

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon.  The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.

An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

Lovely walk along the seafront and excellent cafe at the end of it. Dog friendly and excellent food.

April 2024

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

June 2022

Nice seaside resort, lovely walk along seafront with the dog & very tasty lunch at the Coast cafe bar, very friendly staff & lovely food. We travelled to Seaton on the tram, very pleasant journey & we spent nice afternoon at Seaton.

October 2020

Stunning views, clear blue sea and an amazing beach side cafe!

August 2020

Very nice

July 2018

Lovely and clean,

July 2018

Nice place for a seaside stroll, we were a bit disappointed that bikes aren't allowed on the paths and that there are dog restrictions. Pebbly beach so no good for sand castles but we had a nice few hours and lunch and ice cream from one of the nearby cafes.

April 2024

Excellent accommodation. Very well appointed. Conveniently close to Ottery for visiting family

February 2024

Everything was very good, and Clive was particularly helpful if anything was needed

December 2023

Lovely clean and well-equipped cottage. The owners were very friendly and helpful. They have their own small farm shop and there is a large farm shop about a mile up the road. We enjoyed our stay here immensely and particularly feeding the goats and pigs! We would definitely recommend this quiet, cozy cottage.

October 2023

We really enjoyed our stay and would always be willing to return.

June 2023

The owners Nickie and Clive were very welcoming and helpful. "Joshua's" just up the road from Bantam Cottage has a very attractive assortment of products - from food and vegetables to gifts and greeting cards. Ottery St. Mary was a good base for us to see the area: Topsham, Exeter, Torquay (guided Agatha Christie tour), Cockington, Colton Fishacre (art deco furnished house and beautiful gardens), Seaton, Budleigh Salterton, Shute Barton, Sidmouth. it was also not too far to Cornwall (Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan).

May 2023

We did enjoy our stay. Very quiet and nice to have the farm shop on site for eggs, etc. Very comfortable cottage, well equipped & clean. Friendly but unintrusive owners. Nice to enjoy the wild baby rabbits on the patio at evening time and be greeted by the owner's friendly goats. A good location for reaching beautiful coastline and a supermarket not far away for supplies.

May 2023

We really enjoyed our stay at Bantam Cottage on this small rural farm. Excellent cottage and location we have no hesitation in returning to.

May 2023

Bantam is a wonderful place to stay, clean and comfortable with good quality beds and well equipped with a private outdoor space for a glass or two of something special! Ample parking. Kind and friendly owners, loved the animals and the on-site little farm shop is a real gem with some lovely produce on sale, including home made jams and preserves. A short drive from the spectacular Jurassic Coast, the Donkey Sanctuary, garden centres and surrounded by beautiful Devonshire countryside including National Trust properties nearby. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, would recommend and happily return.

September 2022

Lovely area with lots to do and close to River Otter for viewing Beavers Great food shop Joshua’s just a walk away

July 2022

This was (another) return visit to probably our favourite holiday cottage. It is a great location for touring East, central and south Devon (a few mins from the A30) and really easy to get into Exeter. Great layout in the cottage and farm produce literally yards away. With friendly owners too, who could ask for more?

April 2022

September 2019

Very nice cosy cottage for two in a good location. Owners on site were helpful and pleasant and the farm shop was useful for local produce.

A beautiful cottage close to the wonderful beaches Devon has to offer. The power shower was amazing! Would definitely stay in this cottage again.

This is a lovely property and we would recommend it highly. Everything was provided and we wanted for nothing. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. We would certainly visit again.

May 2018

Yes we enjoyed our stay and Clive and Nikki looked after us very well.

October 2017

Had a brilliant time in Bantam Cottage, everything just perfect from location to facilities. Very comfortable cottage, friendly owner & nice touches such as home made jam, eggs, tea, coffee & sugar

August 2017

Yes - excellent as ever

June 2017

The cottage and the owners were exceptional - everything was perfect. I will definitely come stay here again -- perfect location for what we needed. The eggs, bacon, sausages that you can buy in the shop tasted amazing just like they used to. Thank you to the owners.....

August 2016

We have stayed at this holiday cottage (and the one next door!) on several occasions with our two young children. Both cottages are always exceptionally clean, the equipment is of a high standard and everything is well maintained and upgraded. The owners always make the outside area really attractive, it's lovely arriving to huge displays of summer flowers. We always feel very welcomed by the owners, who maintain a great balance of being very friendly, not intrusive but always there if you need them! The area is great for beaches, Exeter is close by and loads of other attractions. We would thoroughly recommend this lovely property.

February 2016

Bantam cottage is an excellent property. It is well maintained and has everything needed for a family holiday if you like a peaceful location as a base for exploring the South Devon / Dorset Area. The owners are very kind, friendly and helpful. We had a lovely relaxing time.

June 2015

This is my second attempt at a review; the first one was not recorded on-site for some reason. The cottage is excellent and the owners are friendly and helpful. This is an excellent place to base yourself for a holiday. I recommend.

May 2015

A comfortable and well appointed barn conversion, which more than met our expectations. The owners are friendly and helpful. You can come and go as you please and the parking is ample and secure. The accommodation is a great base for exploring East Devon. We will be happy to stay here again
