Lower Ground Floor: Extremely spacious master bedroom with 5ft king-size bed (please note there is no door separating this room from the sitting room on the floor above), wood-burner (guests to provide own logs), 2 sofas, TV with Amazon Fire Stick and DVD player and door to outside. Utility area with washing machine. Ensuite shower room with walk in shower, WC, basin and heated towel rail.
First floor: Stairs (with door) lead up from kitchen area to the landing. Bedroom 2 with 5ft king-size bed and pretty sash window from which Totnes Castle can be seen. Ensuite cloakroom with WC and basin. Bedroom 3 with two 3ft single beds (please note restricted head height in the eaves).

The large garden can be found just 2 metres from the front door of the cottage on the other side of the pedestrian footpath (the footpath that leads to the Totnes Castle) and is accessed via a private gate. Once inside the gateway, this private tranquil space is a joy to wander around with 2 spots set up with garden tables and chairs perfect for alfresco dining.
Please note: Children should be supervised at all times - one side of the garden has a low boundary wall with a high drop on the other side.
Totnes is a small historic market town located on the River Dart in South Devon. A well-known centre for artists, painters, musicians and its twice-weekly market offering antiques, musical instruments, second-hand books, handmade clothing, and local produce. The town exudes a bohemian feel and boasts a wonderful selection of unique and independent shops, restaurants and delis offering a wealth of different produce to try.
The town is overlooked by Totnes Castle which was built in Norman times and is now run by English Heritage, the castle enjoys far-reaching views of the town as well as the surrounding Devonshire countryside.
With fantastic transport links, Totnes is on the main train line from Exeter to Plymouth and is easily accessible from London or the Midlands. The town is also home to the South Devon Railway, one of Devon’s best-loved tourist attractions, with a steam railway which runs through stunning countryside along the River Dart to the nearby town of Buckfastleigh.
Another 'alternative' way to get around is by the River Cruise which runs from Totnes to Dartmouth, taking in the pretty waterside village of Dittisham, and Agatha Christie's scenic estate at Greenway on its route. Dartmouth itself is a historic port town, and offers a great selection of shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants as well as excellent sailing in the sheltered harbour.
For a day trip with a difference, the nearby Sharpham Vineyard is a lovely place for a leisurely stroll and to enjoy locally produced wine and cheese. Alternatively, it's just over 10 minutes' drive to South Brent, a gateway to the bleak rugged wilderness of Dartmoor.
If you're visiting in December, Totnes is well known for its magical Christmas markets which extend throughout the town and serve as the perfect tonic for anyone struggling to get in the festive spirit. Most shops open late and the high-street becomes lined with food and craft stalls, making it a great chance to enjoy some street food and purchase a few special presents.
A holiday cottage in Totnes provides a lovely base for exploring the beautiful countryside along the River Dart in any season.

Alternatively there is a RingGo service available whereby guests can pay on a daily basis in North Street Car Park approximately 100 meters from the cottage.

Broadsands Beach

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).
Elberry Cove

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.
Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.
Fishcombe Cove

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.
A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

Breakwater Beach

One of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, Breakwater beach is a Blue Flag, shingle beach right next to Brixham’s bustling harbour. With disabled ramps to the promenade and beach, as well as toilet facilities, adjoining parking and a café, this lovely, family-friendly beach is accessible for everyone. Hire out a deckchair and spend the day watching the kids splash about in the safe, clean water, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, learn to scuba dive! Breakwater beach is a great place to learn how to scuba dive, thanks to some of the warmest and calmest waters in the country. Whilst dogs are welcome out of season, there is a dog ban in place from May to September.

We had a wonderful stay, reflected in the scores above. We can highly recommend the The Bull Inn (less than quarter of a mile away), which has a creative and very well executed menu. The Happy Apple is a very well stocked convenience store and off license, just two minutes walk away. We would also like to recognize Toad Hall Cottages for arranging for a plumber to fix the boiler on a bank holiday weekend when we reported a lack of hot water.

We enjoyed our stay very much, the secret garden was gorgeous! Our only little niggles - we had very little success with the TVs (but managed to get Netflix) , we realise though that they are family sets and others are more accustomed to them. The second little problem was the shower in the main bathroom on the lower ground floor - the temperature remained tepid no matter how long we ran it (the other shower was brilliant though). The entry time of 5pm was a little tricky too as it was pitch dark when we were fumbling with an unfamiliar padlock/keysafe (our torches weren't much help). We realise though that Covid has caused problems with cleaning/ preparation times, and 5pm would be quite ok for most of the year. But for the most part, we had a brilliant week, and Totnes is a very special place. PS we did call on cottage support for the TV and shower problems, but feel it would have been so much better if they had arranged to call while we were in.

There was only two of us staying, so this wasn't a problem for us. However, if 4, or more were to use the property, there is a lack of wardrobe space. NOT clothes storage, as plenty of drawers, but limited clothes hanging options, i.e. one small closet in the top double bedroom. Could one be fitted in next to the double bed in the lower ground floor part of the accommodation? OK, one of the chest of drawers and/or mirror would have to be relocated. but, just a thought.

We enjoyed our stay very much. Having the two lockable doors gave us more options when wanting to go out individually. Yes, there was the odd cobweb and the shower screens were not sparkling clean but the fact we could heat it as much as we liked at no extra cost, was a big bonus. The access steps were vertiginous so we all, especially my 84 year old mum, took them very carefully. They made humping suitcases and boxes in rather difficult but it was the nature of the territory. The secondary double glazing had to be removed to allow fresh air in. That was heavy and cumbersome. As the cottage is next to the entrance of the castle, we found people often looked into the cottage. Perhaps some obscuring blinds wouldn’t go amiss if occupants felt a bit exposed. The cottage was capacious, comfy and warm. Towels and bedding were super. The Wi-fi signal wasn’t bad at all. Altogether, I would sum it up as a lovely property and would recommend booking it.

The location is perfect for Totnes, which in itself has a lot to offer and a perfect base to explore the surrounding areas. Totnes is quite bohemian and this really appealed to us having had a short stay before. The seperate garden was wild and delightful. The accommodation was perfect for the two of us and we had a wonderful time using the basement room, which is the best room in the cottage. We were lucky to find an available week and would not hesitate to stay again off peak.

Honestly I can’t recommend this property enough, its has a super cosy feel while being super spacious. The downstairs bedroom and sitting room are one of the nicest places we’ve stayed in. There is everything you possibly need inside the cottage. Just know if you book this cottage you are in for a super treat. Beautifully decorated and a stones throw from totnes shops. The owners have really considered the guests that stays here and it shows in every part of the cottage. So much so we extended our stay. Thank you

Excellent cottage in a fantastic location right in the centre of Totnes. Clean, very well equipped and with a lovely garden. Conveniently located near lots of independent shops and restaurants, however the cottage location itself is surprisingly quiet. Totnes is the ideal location for exploring Devon, with many destinations close by including Dartmoor, Brixham, and Torquay. An added bonus is that if you don’t feel like driving the train station is a short walk away, we took the train the Plymouth. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend 10 Castle Street.

10 Castle Street. You made us feel like Royalty. This home, just like the town of Totnes celebrates character, soul and fun and nothing is more beautiful that that. Exploring the house for the first time I felt like a child. Never before have I slept in the shadow of a Norman Castle with the energy of so much history surrounding me . Opening each door in this tardis like home was not so different to opening an advent calendar . The doors in the house are painted a beautiful pistachio colour and on the first visit it isn't immediately obvious whether you'll find a fridge, another room or a stairway behind the door! Neither is it obvious just how big the house is! From the front it looks so quaint and dainty but don't be deceived! We are a family of 4 and my children aged 11 and 14 felt like they had a very grown up and spacious top floor flat while my husband and I in the basement felt like we had the nicest suite in a hotel! It was perfect for all and we all felt special! The house has some charming character pieces too - namely the WONDERFUL grizzly bear foot stool. I wanted to take him home with me! A charming touch that made us all smile! The house also boasts an open fire in the master suite. We had one very special night toasting marshmallows, feeling cosy and watching a movie. The house has access to Netflix and many well chosen movies which is a nice touch after a busy day exploring. You'll also find books in the butterfly cabinet and games too. The house has the unique quality of being tucked away yet incredibly well located. You feel at peace the moment you set foot inside yet should you wish to venture out you can find more peace in the STUNNING garden. The garden is accessed rather like a secret garden! The door is opposite the front door...with a click of the padlock you're in......several steps down the garden path and you're in paradise! This garden has amazing views of the castle and plenty of space for all. A true sanctuary. Should you wish to venture out in the evening or during the day you'll find the high street literally a 3 minute walk away! This high street is UNIQUE! Unlike so many today it is full of independent shops. Here you can find many fun and quirky pieces from amazing retro items in Revival to modern and funky home décor in Love Frankie. You will find that everyone lives life with passion in Totnes. Chris in the flower shop made a girl who isn't green fingered at all fall in love with a plant which had to come home with me and Jimmy in Jimmy's guitars played us beautiful music and one of the music makers had to come home with us too! Basically - do what makes you happy, do it well and make a living spreading your joy. A good ethos in life. For the foodies there are many delicious restaurants close by. We tried Little Asia and Café Mumbai. Both were delicious and an easy walk from home. Also The Happy Apple Supermarket moments from the front door has many interesting items that you won't find everywhere. Much more fun that your usual supermarket. The railway station is also a very short walk away. My husband actually joined me from London halfway through the trip. We were able to walk down to the station to greet him and he was in Totnes from Paddington in just over 3 hours which is very quick - especially given the scenery that he was able to enjoy on the way! We took day trips to Salcombe - 40 minutes away where we enjoyed beautiful walks and a fascinating tour of the gardens at Overbecks a National Trust property with a fascinating history. Also we visited Dartmoor for a pony trek with Shilstone Stables. Hope Cove was a favourite to see the sun go down too. Like something from the film The Goonies! The parking space made life rather deluxe too - no worrying about where to park on the return from a day trip. All taken care of. A 5* home in a fascinating town bursting with character - surrounded by beautiful scenery. We will be back - SO many things we still want to do - the boat tour to Dartmouth, the steam train & Dart Country Park to name a few. Oohhh and also next time I MUST find the healing well in Totnes too. Time ran away with us as it always does when you're having fun. Thank You!

What a fantastic find! Excellent property as a family holiday retreat in a perfect location in the centre of Totnes (right by the entrance to the castle). We visited for five nights during February half term. The three storey property is perfect for families. Two bedrooms upstairs for our three children, a spacious middle floor with relaxing lounge, dining area and kitchen overlooking the courtyard. Master en-suite downstairs with its own lounge area and log fire. Totnes is a quirky and fun town with a good choice of cafes, restaurants, bars, lots of individual shops, and a convenience store less than 150 metres from the house. There is so much to do in the local area, whether that’s a walk (and pub lunch) over in Dartmoor, trips to the various local beaches (park at Thurlestone and enjoy the walk to Hope Cove), River Dart Country Park, or hanging out in Totnes for breakfast enjoying one of the market, before spending an hour exploring the castle or in the sanctuary of secret garden (which isn’t obvious but is part of the property). We will definitely be back to visit next year.

We had a wonderful stay, reflected in the scores above. We can highly recommend the The Bull Inn (less than quarter of a mile away), which has a creative and very well executed menu. The Happy Apple is a very well stocked convenience store and off license, just two minutes walk away. We would also like to recognize Toad Hall Cottages for arranging for a plumber to fix the boiler on a bank holiday weekend when we reported a lack of hot water.

We enjoyed our stay very much, the secret garden was gorgeous! Our only little niggles - we had very little success with the TVs (but managed to get Netflix) , we realise though that they are family sets and others are more accustomed to them. The second little problem was the shower in the main bathroom on the lower ground floor - the temperature remained tepid no matter how long we ran it (the other shower was brilliant though). The entry time of 5pm was a little tricky too as it was pitch dark when we were fumbling with an unfamiliar padlock/keysafe (our torches weren't much help). We realise though that Covid has caused problems with cleaning/ preparation times, and 5pm would be quite ok for most of the year. But for the most part, we had a brilliant week, and Totnes is a very special place. PS we did call on cottage support for the TV and shower problems, but feel it would have been so much better if they had arranged to call while we were in.

There was only two of us staying, so this wasn't a problem for us. However, if 4, or more were to use the property, there is a lack of wardrobe space. NOT clothes storage, as plenty of drawers, but limited clothes hanging options, i.e. one small closet in the top double bedroom. Could one be fitted in next to the double bed in the lower ground floor part of the accommodation? OK, one of the chest of drawers and/or mirror would have to be relocated. but, just a thought.

We enjoyed our stay very much. Having the two lockable doors gave us more options when wanting to go out individually. Yes, there was the odd cobweb and the shower screens were not sparkling clean but the fact we could heat it as much as we liked at no extra cost, was a big bonus. The access steps were vertiginous so we all, especially my 84 year old mum, took them very carefully. They made humping suitcases and boxes in rather difficult but it was the nature of the territory. The secondary double glazing had to be removed to allow fresh air in. That was heavy and cumbersome. As the cottage is next to the entrance of the castle, we found people often looked into the cottage. Perhaps some obscuring blinds wouldn’t go amiss if occupants felt a bit exposed. The cottage was capacious, comfy and warm. Towels and bedding were super. The Wi-fi signal wasn’t bad at all. Altogether, I would sum it up as a lovely property and would recommend booking it.

The location is perfect for Totnes, which in itself has a lot to offer and a perfect base to explore the surrounding areas. Totnes is quite bohemian and this really appealed to us having had a short stay before. The seperate garden was wild and delightful. The accommodation was perfect for the two of us and we had a wonderful time using the basement room, which is the best room in the cottage. We were lucky to find an available week and would not hesitate to stay again off peak.

Honestly I can’t recommend this property enough, its has a super cosy feel while being super spacious. The downstairs bedroom and sitting room are one of the nicest places we’ve stayed in. There is everything you possibly need inside the cottage. Just know if you book this cottage you are in for a super treat. Beautifully decorated and a stones throw from totnes shops. The owners have really considered the guests that stays here and it shows in every part of the cottage. So much so we extended our stay. Thank you

Excellent cottage in a fantastic location right in the centre of Totnes. Clean, very well equipped and with a lovely garden. Conveniently located near lots of independent shops and restaurants, however the cottage location itself is surprisingly quiet. Totnes is the ideal location for exploring Devon, with many destinations close by including Dartmoor, Brixham, and Torquay. An added bonus is that if you don’t feel like driving the train station is a short walk away, we took the train the Plymouth. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend 10 Castle Street.

10 Castle Street. You made us feel like Royalty. This home, just like the town of Totnes celebrates character, soul and fun and nothing is more beautiful that that. Exploring the house for the first time I felt like a child. Never before have I slept in the shadow of a Norman Castle with the energy of so much history surrounding me . Opening each door in this tardis like home was not so different to opening an advent calendar . The doors in the house are painted a beautiful pistachio colour and on the first visit it isn't immediately obvious whether you'll find a fridge, another room or a stairway behind the door! Neither is it obvious just how big the house is! From the front it looks so quaint and dainty but don't be deceived! We are a family of 4 and my children aged 11 and 14 felt like they had a very grown up and spacious top floor flat while my husband and I in the basement felt like we had the nicest suite in a hotel! It was perfect for all and we all felt special! The house has some charming character pieces too - namely the WONDERFUL grizzly bear foot stool. I wanted to take him home with me! A charming touch that made us all smile! The house also boasts an open fire in the master suite. We had one very special night toasting marshmallows, feeling cosy and watching a movie. The house has access to Netflix and many well chosen movies which is a nice touch after a busy day exploring. You'll also find books in the butterfly cabinet and games too. The house has the unique quality of being tucked away yet incredibly well located. You feel at peace the moment you set foot inside yet should you wish to venture out you can find more peace in the STUNNING garden. The garden is accessed rather like a secret garden! The door is opposite the front door...with a click of the padlock you're in......several steps down the garden path and you're in paradise! This garden has amazing views of the castle and plenty of space for all. A true sanctuary. Should you wish to venture out in the evening or during the day you'll find the high street literally a 3 minute walk away! This high street is UNIQUE! Unlike so many today it is full of independent shops. Here you can find many fun and quirky pieces from amazing retro items in Revival to modern and funky home décor in Love Frankie. You will find that everyone lives life with passion in Totnes. Chris in the flower shop made a girl who isn't green fingered at all fall in love with a plant which had to come home with me and Jimmy in Jimmy's guitars played us beautiful music and one of the music makers had to come home with us too! Basically - do what makes you happy, do it well and make a living spreading your joy. A good ethos in life. For the foodies there are many delicious restaurants close by. We tried Little Asia and Café Mumbai. Both were delicious and an easy walk from home. Also The Happy Apple Supermarket moments from the front door has many interesting items that you won't find everywhere. Much more fun that your usual supermarket. The railway station is also a very short walk away. My husband actually joined me from London halfway through the trip. We were able to walk down to the station to greet him and he was in Totnes from Paddington in just over 3 hours which is very quick - especially given the scenery that he was able to enjoy on the way! We took day trips to Salcombe - 40 minutes away where we enjoyed beautiful walks and a fascinating tour of the gardens at Overbecks a National Trust property with a fascinating history. Also we visited Dartmoor for a pony trek with Shilstone Stables. Hope Cove was a favourite to see the sun go down too. Like something from the film The Goonies! The parking space made life rather deluxe too - no worrying about where to park on the return from a day trip. All taken care of. A 5* home in a fascinating town bursting with character - surrounded by beautiful scenery. We will be back - SO many things we still want to do - the boat tour to Dartmouth, the steam train & Dart Country Park to name a few. Oohhh and also next time I MUST find the healing well in Totnes too. Time ran away with us as it always does when you're having fun. Thank You!

What a fantastic find! Excellent property as a family holiday retreat in a perfect location in the centre of Totnes (right by the entrance to the castle). We visited for five nights during February half term. The three storey property is perfect for families. Broadsands Beach

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).
Elberry Cove

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.
Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.
Fishcombe Cove

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.
A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

Breakwater Beach

One of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, Breakwater beach is a Blue Flag, shingle beach right next to Brixham’s bustling harbour. With disabled ramps to the promenade and beach, as well as toilet facilities, adjoining parking and a café, this lovely, family-friendly beach is accessible for everyone. Hire out a deckchair and spend the day watching the kids splash about in the safe, clean water, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, learn to scuba dive! Breakwater beach is a great place to learn how to scuba dive, thanks to some of the warmest and calmest waters in the country. Whilst dogs are welcome out of season, there is a dog ban in place from May to September.
