The Conservation Bat Box has vertical chambers with angled cut-away front showing ladder style grooves which allows the bat to climb into one of the twin chambers. Designed for multi species, the chambers may accessed for inspection via the hinged roof which is secured by a brass catch and removable screw. The sloping roof casts water away from the front of bat box.

The Conservation Bat Box is handmade from solid FSC timber with durable screwed construction. The Conservation Bat Box is predominantly in a natural finish with just the front panel painted in a water-based soft green paint.

The design of our Conservation Bat Box is approved for use by The Bat Conservation Trust.

Siting

The box should be secured to a mature tree, vegetation line (trees/tall hedge) or a building approximately 2.5 - 5mtrs high. It is beneficial to locate in an area is used by bats ie. in a feeding/flight route.

Face the box where it can be in partial sun during the day but not in direct sun (preferably SE, SW or N),

Monitoring & Inspection

A license is required to inspect bat boxes and potentially disturb bats in the UK, therefore inspection is not possible by the general public.

If you are interested to see if a box is being used, look for mouse ' sized droppings containing insects on the floor area beneath a box or watch at dusk from at least 20mtrs away to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

Maintenance

External maintenance is not required for this natural timber product. Bats are mammals with a keen smell and will be deterred from using a box if it is treated in any way.

What Species Might Use My Bat Box?

Various species may use bat boxes for either a daytime roost or maternity roost. These include Pipistrelle, Noctule, Leisler's, Natterer's, Daubenton's, and Brown long-eared bats.

Additional Information

This is a new special production item. Please allow 6 weeks for delivery.

Bats and their roosts are protected by UK law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. All species are Schedule 1 which means that they have a very high level of protection. It is an offence in the UK for the public to disturb, handle or kill a bat.

These products are for wild creatures and as such, you should not expect immediate habitation. We suggest you carefully read the supplied instructions for siting and provide this product in a suitable habitat for the target species. The product can then be re-visited 6 - 12 months later, or in the appropriate season, to see if it is being used.

If after 24 months the product has not been used, it may be worth choosing an alternative location to site it and/or look to see what improvements you can make to provide a suitable environment for your target species (flowers, woodpiles, rough areas of garden etc)

Because many species of creature are constantly seeking refuge and safe nesting sites, you may find that an unexpected species is using your product - this is part of nature and all species should be welcomed as part of your wildlife garden.
