Watermouth Bay
(Less than a mile)

(2)

Located between Hele Bay and Combe Martin, Watermouth Bay has a very sheltered and secluded harbour, shielded by the natural breakwater of Sexton's Burrows.  The area is postcard perfect with spectacular views.  It is famed for having created an ecosystem for many rare marine species, which makes it a very special experience to visit – you may even see porpoises, dolphins and seals when the tide is right.  The bay is located within the hamlet of Watermouth and as an added point of interest, over the road from the harbour, you will find Watermouth Castle which is currently used as a museum and theme park.  The beach is sandy and welcomes dogs throughout the year.  Surrounding rocks shelter the waters from strong tides, making it a safe area for swimming.

Amazing tranquil harbour with a great cafe. Great coastal pathway walks. Only slight issue was signage from the boat club to drive down the path towards harbour was not too obvious.

June 2022

Walked the dog to Watermouth Bay. Would have liked to drive down with the family and try out the cafe, but there is no parking, as all the boats were in the car park.

Combe Martin
(2 miles)

Next to the North Devon town of Combe Martin, at the western edge of the Exmoor National Park, is a pretty sandy beach peppered with rock pools.  Enjoying easy access and facilities close by, the beach is popular and has won awards for its high quality.  The beach is also good for families due to the vast stretch of sand and rock pools that will keep children entertained for hours, dogs are not allowed on the beach from May to September and there are cafes and restaurants close by.  It boasts some of the finest scenery and includes the reputedly highest cliffs in England, the gentle currents make the water perfect for swimming.  There is a large car park above Combe Martin beach, a small car park to the north of the beach, and toilets by the main car park.

Hele Bay
(2 miles)

A small cove on the edge of Ilfracombe, Hele Bay is a sand beach with lots of rock pools.  Easily accessible via a short slipway, which is suitable for wheel chairs, the car park is several minutes from the beach on foot.  There are toilets close by as well as a shop and café, so all the necessary amenities are near.  It is tidal, so do be careful not to get stuck when the tide turns, and the currents can be strong so again be careful if you’re swimming.  It’s a wonderful place for a good old fashioned family day out, you can walk from Ilfracombe and really take in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that it sits in.  Don’t forget the binoculars and see how many big ships you can spot out at sea!

Rapparree Cove
(2 miles)

In Ilfracombe in North Devon, Rapparree Cove is famous as the site of the shipwreck of the London, which sank in 1796.  Reputed to have carried gold and several African slaves who perished, debates, rumours and myths surround the wreck, fuelled by the discovery of bones claimed to be those of ‘freedom fighters’ from St Lucia in the 1990s.  These days however, the rocky inlet is a pretty little beach accessible via steep steps.  It is popular with dog walkers and musing over the history and tales that have been left in the ship’s wake.

Ilfracombe Harbour
(3 miles)

Ilfracombe has been home to a port since the 12th century and has been a settlement dating back far longer than that.  Today it is still a working harbour where fish and seafood are landed daily, but it’s also a holiday maker’s paradise.  From here you can set off on trips to the uninhabited Lundy Island, go on coastal cruises and even sea life safaris.  Pop into an abundance of restaurants, cafes, tea gardens and pubs, or simply head to the beach.  Strand Beach is a sandy beach on the inner harbour itself where there is no access at high tide.  Although the water is sheltered, you need to watch out for boats if you choose to take a dip.  It’s recommended that you steer clear of the slipway at all times.

August 2023

Sunrise Cottage is so peaceful. Being in amongst the beautiful, idyllic surroundings of the North Devon countryside. Sunrise Cottage is spacious, light and airy, whilst also retaining a cosy country home aesthetic. Stunning views of Berrynarbor nestled in between the rolling hills. The essentials provided (stone-baked bread, milk, topped off with a lemon drizzle sponge cake) were most certainly a wholesome touch, and made us feel very welcome, especially after such a long journey. Over the two weeks that we have stayed here, each day has brought us something new. We thoroughly enjoyed our daily adventures, and returning to this house gave us some much needed rest and relaxation after long, busy, fun-filled days outside. We were delighted to spend our time in this well-equipped, enchanting cottage, set against the backdrop of this quintessentially charming village. Thank you very much!

May 2023

Our stay was wonderful this was our 10th time at sunrise cottage and both the owners and the caretaker went that extra mile and we would like to thank them and Toad Hall too our favourite place was Storm in a teacup and the walks in the woods up the hill from the cottage. Thank you

Having a sofa each in the lounge was a luxury! The outlook across the valley was beautiful. The village community shop provided some extras that we had forgotten to take. A perfect, very comfortable homely base from which to explore the surrounding area and recover from miles of enjoyable, scenic trekking. Sunrise Cottage and the surrounding countryside exceeded our expectations in everyway possible, and we will most definitely return. Thoroughly recommended.

April 2018

The Globe Pub is quoted as 50 yards away please be aware that, if walking, the lanes to it are VERY steep.

April 2018

Booking 323455 Sunrise Cottage, Berrynarbor, North Devon. The only comment we have to make is that the downstairs shower was not working properly (no hot water for 3-4 days) and it took the plumber several days to fix it. However, the caretaker very kindly left us 2 bottles of red wine and a box of chocolates to apologise for the inconvenience which we thought was a very nice touch. This is our second stay here and we all very much enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage which was furnished and equipped to a very high standard in such a beautiful location. We would very much like to stay there again in the future.

So sorry that you had this problem, but delighted you had a great stay anyway. I'm pleased to report that the shower problem has now been resolved. Thank you for your patience.

- The Toad Hall Team

March 2018

Very nice cottage. Clean and well equipped. Lots of books and games and DVDs provided. Lovely relaxing stay.

August 2017

Lovely cottage, very well equipped, real home from home. Two pubs close by not too far from coombe Martin. Really enjoyed our week. Weather was also very good.

June 2017

We really enjoyed our stay. It wold have been lovely to have a sun shade for the terrace because of the freak heatwave it was too hot to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful veiw. I'm sure it wouldn't have been a problem had it not been so hot so definitely not complaining. All was wonderful with excellent facilities. The recycling collectors didn't appear during our stay. Would highly recommend to everyone.

June 2017

The Cottage at Berrynarbor was extremely good. The layout fitted our family needs perfectly and its location was ideal to explore the North Devon Coastline. It was a nice touch to receive a welcome pack on our arrival - always a sign of the owners being people who care. The facilities were very comprehensive enabling us to eat in the house as and when we felt like it - however, the eating establishments nearby were also of a very good standard and welcomed us and our 3 dogs with open arms. The weather left a lot to be desired, but that obviously does not detract from the standard of the accommodation which enabled us to remain indoors in comfort when the weather was bad.

April 2017

It was a fantastic cottage, great location and ample space for a family size group of people. We had a great time, it was extremely well furnished and cosy. Loved the style of the cottage and the wood burner was also a really great feature. Very comfortable beds and fantastic facilities, including stunning views. It was the best self catering cottage we stayed in. Will definitely hope to stay again in the future.

An absolutely lovely and well-kept cottage. Brilliant location and we've had some fantastic walks in the area. The village is beautiful and quaint, everyone has been very welcoming and helpful! The cake on arrival was perfect and we enjoyed it with some tea after some very long walks.

May 2015

One of the best cottages we have ever stayed, (and we've stayed in many). Nothing to complain about, its quality accommodation in a fantastic location. We've had a superb week with unexpectedly nice weather, lots of walking. Hunters Inn to Woody Bay recommended and eating and drinking in the Globe every night.

October 2014

Excellent value for money, quality accommodation in an extremely picturesque location.

May 2014
