Stoke Gabriel is a pretty village where the cottages tumble down a hill that overlooks the picturesque Dart estuary in South Devon and is surrounded by some truly beautiful countryside.

Crab Cottage is tucked away at the bottom of the hill just a few steps from the water and the Mill Pool, formed when the creek was dammed to create a permanent tree fringed pool. This delightful cottage is sympathetically converted with a comfortably furnished living room, surrounding a woodburner effect gas stove, which provides a welcome and cosy focus during those chilly spring and autumn evenings.

The village epitomises everything that is good about a Devon hamlet with a thriving local community, two pubs, a convenience store, Post Office and quayside café/bar. Children will love this place and hours can be spent in the traditional pastimes of crabbing or messing about on the water and as the cottage has plenty of parking space it allows guests to bring their own small boat or dinghy which can be launched from the nearby slipway.

There is extensive wildlife in the area for animal lovers with the egrets and otters and if you are lucky you might even spot a seal.

For adults there are plenty of beautiful walks, Agatha Christie’s country house, Greenway, now owned by the National Trust, is close by, a river trip down to Dartmouth or up to Totnes is a must and the English Riviera is just a few miles away.

“Have been so lucky this week. A comfortable well appointed cottage with wonderful views and good weather.  Will go home refreshed.” Ann and Robin.

“Crab cottage is wonderful! We’ve had a lovely holiday. The cottage proved a perfect base from which to take our dinghy onto the Dart every day.” Rachel and Richard.

Front door to open plan living and dining space. Dining area with table and chairs overlooking the lane with views of the Mill Pool. Lounge area with sofa, Poang chair and coffee table surrounding the woodburner style gas fire. Flat screen TV with Sky digital, DVD and radio/CD. Kitchen with ceramic hob, oven under and dishwasher. Washer/dryer, fridge/freezer and microwave in utility alcove. Stairs from living room to landing and double bedroom, which has views of the Mill Pool, a 4ft 6in double bed, fitted wardrobe and dressing table. Twin bedroomwith two 3ft single beds. Spacious family bathroom with bath, shower over, hand basin, WC, heated towel rail and shaver point.

Steps from rear door lead up to a small private garden area with picnic table and benches.

The ancient, quintessentially English village of Stoke Gabriel is located in unspoilt countryside on the edge of an idyllic creek of the River Dart. Its waterside position makes it popular among boating enthusiasts and perfect for trying your hand at kayaking or paddleboarding.

The village benefits from a couple of shops and a Post Office, two pubs, and a lovely old quay where children can go crabbing, There are also many peaceful strolls to be taken along the riverbank or through the apple orchard and winding village streets.

Stoke Gabriel lies equal distance from the historic maritime town of Dartmouth, the ancient market town of Totnes, and the English Riviera town of Paignton. For a beach day out you can choose between Brixham, Paignton or Torquay in one direction, or head towards the beautiful beaches at Blackpool Sands and Torcross in the other. Whilst if you would like to experience the rugged bleak wilderness of Dartmoor, it is less than half an hour's drive away.

A holiday cottage in Stoke Gabriel provides a picturesque spot to relax and unwind in the heart of the beautiful South Hams countryside.

Designated parking place for two cars, with further space for a medium sized boat/trailer, (max 18ft).

  • Included: Bed linen (no towels), WiFi, high chair and stair gate, central heating (gas) and electricity.
  • Telephone: Incoming calls only. Mobile reception poor.
  • Local Facilities: Beaches from 4 miles. Shops and pubs a few minute’s walk in the village. Paignton with supermarkets, shops and restaurants and Goodrington Sands 5 miles. Totnes 4.5 miles.

Fabulous locally sourced seasonal food, beautifully cooked and friendly staff - what's not to like? Currently (June 2022) dining-in is only available on Saturday evenings (6pm-8pm) and for Sunday lunch (2pm - 3:30pm) so early booking is advised! They do offer a take-away service Wednesday & Friday 5pm-8pm and for Sunday lunch 12pm - 2pm, and also have homemade dishes available for reheating at home. Great for when you want to eat at home but don't feel like cooking. Their latest menu and contact details can be found on their Facebook page.

October 2020

We have eaten several times at Emma’s during previous visits to Stoke Gabriel prior to the Pandemic and were delighted to learn that Emma and John were offering a delivered takeaway service which we took full advantage of during our recent 2 week stay in the village. We enjoyed succulent Sunday Roasts together with many other dishes that were on offer. Excellent as always. We really were impressed that the food prepared by Emma and her Team and delivered by John directly to our holiday cottage was every bit as good as when we have eaten in the restaurant. Well Done and many thanks for helping to make our holiday so enjoyable and memorable.

Broadsands Beach
(4 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Elberry Cove
(4 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove
(5 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(5 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

August 2023

Breakwater Beach
(6 miles)

One of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, Breakwater beach is a Blue Flag, shingle beach right next to Brixham’s bustling harbour. With disabled ramps to the promenade and beach, as well as toilet facilities, adjoining parking and a café, this lovely, family-friendly beach is accessible for everyone. Hire out a deckchair and spend the day watching the kids splash about in the safe, clean water, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, learn to scuba dive! Breakwater beach is a great place to learn how to scuba dive, thanks to some of the warmest and calmest waters in the country. Whilst dogs are welcome out of season, there is a dog ban in place from May to September.

January 2024

Location is superb within village of Stoke Gabriel. Close proximity to the well known and 'must visit' River Shack cafe/restaurant, is an added bonus. Dartmoor National Park, Dartington and Dartmouth are all well-known and easily reachable attractive venues to visit. Totnes with its quaint characteristics and numerous, readily available places to eat and buy a range of locally produced craftware all goes to make Crab Cottage an excellent base to explore and enjoy this area of Devon. PS -the vlii village store and River Dart Gallery, plus the Church Inn are all really worth visiting. Their respective hosts effortlessly show you what making you feel welcome really amounts to.

November 2023

A very comfortable cottage in a delightful location, thank you.

September 2023

We had a great stay in Crab Cottage, apart from the weather, for us we would have enjoyed more outdoor space

September 2023

What a lovely relaxing week with warm and sunny weather

September 2023

We had a lovely week at Crab Cottage which had everything we needed. Unfortunately the TV proved to be most uncooperative but that was no detriment really as we had books and devices to occupy our time in the evenings. I would certainly visit again.

August 2023

We enjoyed our stay.

July 2023

Absolutely delightful cottage. Perfect position in the village. Its one of the only cottages we've stayed at that we would definitely return to.

June 2023

Wonderful for kayaking on the Dart.

June 2023

lovely comfortable cottage

May 2023

We recommend staying at Crab Cottage. Spotlessly clean, with a comfy double bed and good quality furnishings, crockery etc. New cooker and settee address concerns in some earlier reviews. We were made welcome by the caretaker and neighbours. Great views from front windows of the millpond or to people watch at busier times. The private small garden at the rear is a quiet place for a cup of tea or catching the sun in the afternoon. Several interesting walks from front door. We liked combining these with a visit to the Church House pub in the village. Dedicated parking is a bonus - plenty of room for 2 cars.

April 2023

Yes. We found the cottage very clean and comfortable.

February 2023

Thank you and see you again.

November 2022

A lovely cottage in a great location

October 2022

Although on arrival everywhere looked clean and tidy, a number of areas could have been better. The cooker needed a good clean.

Many thanks for your useful feedback. We are pleased to say the kitchen is having some updates and any housekeeping issues will all be looked into and addressed.

- The Toad Hall Team

October 2022

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Crab Cottage. In the morning while enjoying breakfast one can watch the Wild Fowl on the Mill Pool ranging from Cormorant, Egret, Heron, Canada Geese and a variety of Ducks etc. Stoke Gabriel is a lovely village, recommended eateries are: Emma's, The River Shack and The Church House Pub. We highly recommend Crab Cottage.

September 2022

Area above the fire was absolutely covered in cobwebs needs a good hoovering

August 2022

We enjoyed our stay and the location being close to the Millpond

July 2022

The beds were clean and well prepared; generally the cleanliness was good, apart from the kitchen and bathroom floors, which had not been properly mopped. The oven was in a poor state internally.

June 2022

A beautiful cottage, a warm welcome too ! Crab cottage is in an ideal location a beautiful view. Nice and spacious and clean , it could do with more storage, the garden is of no use especially for anyone with mobility issues. We would definitely recommend crab cottage and would definitely return Thank you ?

May 2022

Soffa is extremely uncomfortable

May 2022

We did enjoy our stay, as we have done in previous years too.

February 2022

A cosy cottage in an excellent location. Very well equipped and very clean.

September 2021

We had a wonderful time. It is our second stay at this cottage and quality and standards remains consistent year on year.

September 2021

We had a wonderfully relaxing break at Crab Cottage. The location near the Mill Pool was great for just sitting and watching the world go by. There were lots of lovely walks from the cottage door.

August 2021

We had a lovely week in the cottage thank you. The location is excellent and it is very comfortable (super comfy beds!) My only areas for improvement would be: 1. There was no room in the kitchen to store food. Perhaps reducing the equipment to leave an empty cupboard or opening the locked cupboards in the utility area would be a good idea. 2. The garden area was pretty much unusable due to how overgrown it was. This was a real shame as the rest of the cottage felt loved and the outdoor bit did not - there was even a rotting dead bird next to the table. If the cottage is being advertised as having an outdoor area it needs to be usable. It wouldn't take much work to greatly improve it.

Thank you for your feedback which I have passed onto the owners and the gardeners have been in now to tidy everything up. Many thanks again and we hope you still had a lovely holiday.

- The Toad Hall Team

July 2021

We really enjoyed our stay in Crab Cottage. It was in a lovely position and made it the perfect base to be able to visit lots of different places.

May 2021

Apart from the comments above it was idyllic !

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Crab Cottage and thank you for letting us know about the problems with your mobile phone signal. Unfortunately some mobile networks have poor signal in this area, however others are okay - we would always advise you check with your provider prior to booking as there are some black spots in more rural parts of South Devon. We look forward to welcoming you back to Crab Cottage again soon.

- The Toad Hall Team

April 2021

The only downside was the broadband speed. We live in the same village and were staying in Crab Cottage for a week while some work was being done on the house. Our broadband speed isn't fantastic, but it was still three times as fast as Crab Cottage. I clocked Crab Cottage at 5-6 mbps, whereas we get 16-17 mbps.

October 2020

We enjoyed our stay in Crab Cottage, as in previous years. Just a couple of points I would like to mention: 1. it would have been useful to have a rubber mat in the bathroom for showering, as I think we have had before and 2. the bathroom wall tiles are in need of a clean (black mold), however I appreciate it is difficult with all the extra cleaning that is having to be carried out at this time.

We are delighted you enjoyed your most recent stay at Crab Cottage. Thank you for the constructive comments which we have passed onto the owner and the cleaners have confirmed they will attend to any discoloured grout. We look forward to welcoming you back to Crab Cottage again soon!

- The Toad Hall Team

September 2020

Very nice cottage, fantastic location. We really felt like it was home from home and have already booked again for next year.

October 2019

Lovely cottage ideal for two or a family of four. Lovely location!

September 2019

The location couldn't be better. Although we came by public transport we found it quite easy to get around to places of interest on the bus from Paignton. The keyholder, Mrs Mannering was very helpful.

September 2019

Good base, lots to do in the area.

August 2019

We enjoyed our stay in this beautiful village in a perfect location.

April 2019

Second year running, lovely cottage and maintained well. Hoover fab and utility part perfect.

August 2018

Yes, a lovely cottage in a beautiful setting

Crab Cottage was a comfortable base for our weeks holiday, the location and view was excellent. Good parking facility near cottage. Lovely linen on a very comfortable bed. Mrs Mannering, the caretaker very helpful. Settee in lounge was not very comfortable as it was a more of a futon.

June 2018

We really enjoyed our second stay here. Excellent position, lovely restaurant (Emma's) nearby. Friendly people. Weather could have been better!

June 2018

Very enjoyable stay. We found everything that we needed. Some of the local restaurants were not open every night. Lovely scenery and and helpful people.

May 2018

We love staying at crab cottage. So calm and peaceful. Mrs Mannering the Caretaker is lovely. The location is amazing. Having a local bus which takes you to Paignton and then being able to walk or catch a train or bus from there means you do not need to drive anywhere. Great walks, two steam trains and lots of boat trips available. The perfect holiday.

December 2017

I stayed there with some family members over the Christmas period, with other members visiting on occasion. We managed to cater for 7 without too much difficulty. We all had a great time. The house is warm and comfortable and the kitchen has all the utensils needed.

October 2017

Wonderful cottage. Beautiful surroundings. Friendly people. Lots of places to visit. Beautiful walks alongside the Mill Pond. Would highly recommend to others.

Yes, we enjoyed our stay very much. Car parking provided at adjacent property really useful, easier to access than imagined. I would probably say your on-line/brochure description of the location/position of property probably a little understated as the views were amazing and location right by the water great for small families for crabbing etc.

We both had a great holiday at Crab Cottage , it was clean and well equipped. The position overlooking the Mill Pool and only a minutes walk to the River Dart was fantastic. We would definitely recommend a stay at Crab Cottage. This is our 2nd booking with Toad Hall ( the first being Stable Cottage in Tuckenhay a few years ago, is this no longer available, looked but couldn't find on your site. ) and we have always been impressed with the ease of making a booking and the prompt replies to any queries. Your descriptions and the numerous photo's of the properties on your web site are really helpful in assisting us to make a choice. Thanks to all the team. Regards. Tim and Helen Wood.

We absolutely loved our stay at Crab Cottage. It was spotlessly clean, tastefully furnished and it was nice to be welcomed by Jo the caretaker. The cottage was in a beautiful location, such a lovely spot to come back to each day. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends, however, I would mention the fact that the sofa isn't too comfortable and the bath lacks a grab rail. It's the second time we have booked through Toad Hall Cottages and the standard is high. We would definitely book with you again.

Really glad that you had a lovely stay. Sorry you found the sofa uncomfortable. We've been letting Crab Cottage for a number of years and haven't had that comment made before, but we'll pass it on to the owner. Similarly, the bath has never had a grab rail and again to date no one has mentioned it, but we'll pass it on.

Wonderful location, very peaceful. Housekeeper, shop and pub staff friendly and helpful. All properties should have keysafes!

May 2017

Will recommend to our friends.

May 2017

We always enjoy our stay at Crab Cottage. Mrs Mannering, the Caretaker is very welcoming. We always have such a relaxing break here. Such lovely views and a first class cottage. We do not drive all week. The local bus takes you into Paignton where you can get buses or trains to nearby locations. It is such a peaceful village. Would love to live there.

March 2017

Mrs Mannering, the housekeeper, was most welcoming and helpful.

February 2016

Absolutely fantastic cottage. Really loved the view. Lovely walks and very happy memories.

February 2016

A super week in fantastic Crab Cottage. So well equipped and cosy, we don't want to leave. The villagers are warm and friendly with lots of 'Good Mornings'. Hope to see Crab Cottage again in the near future. P.S. The kayaking is superb.

November 2015

We had an amazing week staying at Crab Cottage. It's such a comfortable cosy cottage with everything you need. It's even nicer than the photos. We stayed at the end of October & it was so toasty warm, we didn't bother to venture out much in the evenings. The cottage has a lovely view of the Mill Pool. Stoke Gabriel is a very quiet village, which was exactly what we were looking for. I'm guessing it's much busier during the summer. It's a great base to explore the South Hams. The cream tea awaiting us was much appreciated. Helpful caretakers who are there if you need them but not at all in your space.

July 2015

the cottage was in a lovely location and just right for the other places that we wanted to visit in the nearby areas etc

May 2015

An excellent cottage, ideal for what we needed. I would recommend it to anyone. Hopefully we can return to Crab Cottage in the not too distant future.

April 2015

A very enjoyable week in an idyllic setting. So lucky to enjoy the first warm sunshine of the year in this beautiful part of the world.

November 2014

Best cottage we have stayed in. Would definately recommend and we would certainly use Toad Hall Cottages in the future. A lot of thought has gone into this cottage. Wonderful views, lovely village. Had a wonderful holiday. Thank you

July 2014

Crab Cottage was clean and the location lovely. The cottage was very well appointed with regard to appliances and equipment. I would recommend the cottage highly as the owners have provided some thoughtful touches for children such as a beach tent, crab lines, toys and books.

October 2013

Would like to stay at Crab Cottage again.
