4 Kings Quay is a delightful, attractive period cottage set in a secluded walled garden, on a quiet residential lane in the heart of Dartmouth, with the River Dart and the embankment just two minutes’ level walk from the cottage. The cottage, unashamedly old fashioned, exudes warmth and character with original oak beams, stripped pine doors and panelling, exposed stone walls and benefits from a lovely sunny and enclosed garden with a banana tree! This is a most charming self catering holiday cottage, ideal for larger families or two families sharing with the added benefit of a single garage parking.

“Lovely cottage, would definitely stay here again, infact, would move in permanently.” Mrs Odian

First Floor:

Master bedroom with two 3ft single beds that can be pushed together to form a super king bed (please note the duvets will still be of single size).

Steeped in maritime history, Dartmouth lies at the mouth of the majestic River Dart. This bustling waterfront town is overlooked by the famous and somewhat imposing Britannia Royal Naval College, just one hint at the town’s historic and strategic importance. Look around and you’ll notice old fortifications on both sides of the river. Bayards Cove Fort, dating from Tudor times is easy to access just a short stroll from the shops, or you can take the passenger ferry up to Dartmouth Castle, which has guarded the narrow entrance to the port for over 600 years, and then walk along the stunning South West Coast Path towards Stoke Fleming and Strete.

Central to Dartmouth is the “boat float”. From here, take time to explore the picturesque network of streets and alleys with their abundance of independent shops, cafés and restaurants. For art lovers, there are numerous galleries and you may even spot the famous artist, Simon Drew, at work. For a hearty brunch, see if you can squeeze onto a shared table in the bustling Café Alf Resco or for a more continental feel, sample the delights of Saveurs French bakery.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a total novice, a simple must for every visitor is to take to the water. Sailing, kayaking or hopping on a passenger ferry to nearby Totnes, Dittisham or Greenway (once a home of Agatha Christie) will allow you to enjoy this truly idyllic stretch of river. Keep an eye out for wildlife on the way as you may be lucky enough to be accompanied by a friendly seal!

If you’re looking for a day out on the beach, drive along the truly breathtaking coast road to nearby Blackpool Sands (no dogs in high season) and on to Torcross at Slapton Sands, a three and a half mile stretch of beach with a neighbouring freshwater nature reserve, Slapton Ley, which is a haven for bird watchers.

From Dartmouth, you can cross the water to neighbouring Kingswear to walk the Dart Valley Trail towards Greenway, catch the steam railway or take the higher car ferry across for a family day out at Paignton Zoo or Torquay's Living Coasts.

Dartmouth itself literally heaves at the seams during Dartmouth Regatta in late August, but there is also plenty to keep you entertained throughout the rest of the year. And if you prefer simple pleasures, the embankment provides the perfect spot for crabbing. All you need is a bucket, line, net and some bait and it won’t be long before you hear squeals of delight from the whole family!

Picturesque Dartmouth is the ideal holiday cottage location for couples or families looking to enjoy all this lovely coastal town has to offer as soon as they walk out their front door.

Single garage parking for one small to medium sized car (height restriction 6ft).

  • Included: Duvets, pillows (no bed linen or towels provided, these can be hired from the independent housekeeping company - details from Toad Hall Cottages), high chair, central heating (gas) and electricity, WiFi.
  • Pets: Well behaved dogs welcome. Pet Charge: £30.00 per pet per week.
  • Telephone: No telephone. Mobile reception good.
  • Local Facilities: Beach at Blackpool Sands 3 miles. Shops, pubs, restaurants and the river embankment a minute’s stroll.

March 2018

We were a party of eight visiting for an evening meal . We booked beforehand and were greeted immediately upon arrival and shown to our table upstairs . The waitress was pleasant and the restaurant was clean, fresh and had a warm friendly atmosphere . We are a picky bunch , but nothing was too much trouble and our waitress ran backwards and forwards to relay information from the kitchen to us . Having made decisions , and ordered we didn't have to wait long . The food arrived quickly , was hot , well presented , and plenty of it . Our waitress checked on us regularly . The food was tasty , fresh and filling , we had steaks , fish pies , pork , fish and chips , a good selection and everyone was happy . We would definitely eat here again . We loved the furnishings , especially the amazing dragons, one of our party was a seven year old little girl who thoroughly enjoyed going on a dragon hunt .

Blackpool Sands
Blackpool Sands
(3 miles)

(35)

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

July 2023

Looks a lovely beach but unfortunately no dogs allowed at all

June 2023

Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.

May 2023

we love this beach always clean good parking clean facilities and good cafe.

September 2022

We did go to this beach, couldn’t go in the sea as it was so rough, was beautiful though. No sand, but still very nice.

September 2022

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

September 2022

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

August 2022

A lovely beach, stunning veiw as you drive down towards it. Very clean with clear water.

August 2022

Lovely clean beach although very quiet. There was a small charge for parking.

August 2021

June 2021

Very large shingle beach, charges for parking at a set fee no matter how long your visit. Can pay by card for parking as well as cash.

May 2021

Great beach

November 2020

Lovely sandy beach. Parked here (£2) whilst doing a circular walk and then returned for a walk along the beach.

November 2020

Dogs allowed on beach out of season, a bracing walk with coffee and millionaire shortbread at the cafe to finish.

October 2020

Great beach really beautiful , even in the rain, as the Venus café is right on the beach and is warm, dry and serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices.

October 2019

One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.

October 2019

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach nestled between steep hills at either end. Excellent facilities including one of the best beach cafes we've ever visited.

September 2019

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

September 2019

Parking charge between £3 - £8 depending on time of year, Also food good but e.g. Hawaiian Prawns (£9) consisted of 5 prawns. Not good value for money.

October 2018

Lovely beach, not sandy but the stones are okay. Good food, beverages, coast guards, Nice view and not so cowded

August 2018

Lovely clean beach in super location along coastal road. Great place to visit.

May 2018

Beautiful clean beach with excellent facilities.Clean toilets lovely cafe and shop.Lifeguard on the beach. No dogs allowed.Plenty of parking. We enjoyed rock pooling at the far end of the beach. The owner does a great job.You can also visit Blackpool Sands garden but we did not have time. Also a juggler was there on the day we went great fun for everyone.

August 2017

Beautiful location but shame it a shingle beach and not sandy. Also very disappointed with the £8 fee to park the car .

August 2017

Perfect venue for a sunny day! Secluded beach which is clean and tidy, with a cafe, snack bar and shop, beach equipment hire too

July 2017

The cost of the parking steep

June 2017

May 2017

Elberry Cove
(4 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

August 2018

Broadsands Beach
(4 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

St Mary's Bay
(4 miles)

The decent to St Mary’s Bay is one of the best views in Brixham, with panoramic views of the English Riviera. This beautiful, unspoilt beach has a carpark nearby, but we recommend walking there to make the most of the stunning surroundings. The sandy and shingle beach is sheltered by steep cliffs on either side, which means the decent to the beach isn’t easy, especially for those with mobility disabilities. There are no facilities at the beach, but visitors can take the coast path north to Berry Head Nature Reserve, where there is a great café and toilets, as well as stunning coastal views. Dogs are welcome all year, making St Mary’s Bay a great place to take a well-earned rest on your dog walk.

Churston Cove
(5 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

September 2023

We really enjoyed our stay and will be returning in 2024. Thankyou!

August 2023

We had a glorious time at 4, Kings Quay. The location is perfect so you can leave the car locked up for the entire week and walk or use the local transport. And we love having a handy M&S.

July 2023

Our stay was wonderful as always

June 2023

We had an exceptional holiday with fantastic weather. Car went into garage on the Saturday, came out briefly on the Wednesday then back in the garage until Saturday going home. Everything perfect.

April 2023

really enjoyed our stay at 4 Kings Quay. Look forward to staying there again

March 2023

I love staying in this cottage. The location is great and the garage and garden make all the difference

February 2023

A wonderfully quirky, idiosyncratic property. We wouldn't change a thing about it. It was fabulous. Extremely well equipped and the location was perfect.

October 2022

No milk or tea. Bags on arrival .

September 2022

Lovely relaxing holiday. Comfortable and homely house. This was our second visit to 4 Kings Quay. It would be lovely to know something of the history of the house as it is obviously very old. Also the house being on the flat ideal for older people. The bonus is an M&S food hall just round the corner. All in all perfect house and location.

July 2022

It has great charm with perfect garden and location for us with grand kids

May 2022

We LOVED our stay and love coming to Dartmouth. The location of 4 Kings Quay is perfect with the added perk of a garage. Thank you.

May 2022

We had a wonderful time - mainly just 2 of us in a large property that sleeps 7. Another couple joined us for the middle Dart Music Festival weekend and we all enjoyed the garden space in the excellent weather. Great to hear the music when we returned for a break but not good if you were not a fan - we are!

April 2022

Loved this cottage and garden for my dog, lots of walks, bus ride to Kingsbridge was stunning, I will return.

March 2022

This was my fourth visit and I intend to book again. Enough said

February 2022

Enjoyed our stay at kings quay, very central to all shops and quay. Garden and garage was added bonus. Cottage was very clean and warm on arrival, which was welcome as weather was cold . Many thanks to all who were involved in making our stay great.

January 2022

Yes very much enjoyed Christmas with our family.

December 2021

Yes

September 2021

Yes, although some of the pubs and restaurants were clearly struggling with staff.

June 2021

Changing anything in this property would spoil its appeal and creaking sloping floorboards are part of it. There was nothing we wanted that was not there, but I fear it could be our last visit as legs etc do not cope with stairs to the loo! I cannot say enough as to how much we have enjoyed our visits to KINGS QUAY. Thank you to all staff and good luck with the newly opened office in Dartmouth. Many thanks to Mrs Dixon for letting us share such a lovely and quirky cottage may it not change too much! Mrs Irene Oodian

May 2021

We enjoyed the house very much, pity we couldn't have booked better weather. Toad Hall rep in office very helpful and even had occasion to speak to the h ouse owner. He sounded lovely.

October 2020

It was a lovely place to stay, very warm, great garden and will book again

October 2020

Having the garage was a real plus although quite difficult to access we managed very well

September 2020

King Quay is a beautiful character cottage in a central location. It would be difficult to change the layout without spoiling its charm.

August 2020

We had a great week! We stayed here last year and I left my ice blocks - they had been left in the pantry for me this year! Thank you for remembering!

October 2019

Lovely cottage in an ideal spot. Garage is such a bonus, albeit tight.

October 2019

I love this house. Parking and garden are must haves for me and my dog and as rare as hens teeth on the flat in Dartmouth. Just deciding when to book for next year (well I did only get back two days ago)

October 2019

Another lovely stay!

October 2019

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - it was perfect. We only mention the shower as it was a bit of a pain but it did not spoil our holiday. Thank you for the treats for humans and dogs.

August 2019

We had a fab time! It was excellent! The cake, milk and flowers were a nice welcoming touch, the pantry and kitchen cupboard were stocked with bits and bobs, all very useful! Fabulous!

August 2019

We really enjoyed our stay and the house was perfectly situated. Comfortable inside and lovely garden area which we know is rare in Dartmouth! I would 100% stay here again and recommend to friends. The little touches like; cake, dog treats and notes with information on were all greatly appreciated.

August 2019

We really enjoyed our stay and the house was perfectly situated. Comfortable inside and lovely garden area which we know is rare in Dartmouth! Parking was an issue as we had two vehicles, could a permit be supplied? I would 100% stay here again and recommend to friends I would suggest a small note book be left for any housekeeping comments so that these are not spoilers in the guest book! The little touches like; cake, dog treats and notes with information on were all greatly appreciated.

July 2019

We enjoyed our stay very much. Ideal location for local attractions. Would love to come back.

The house was fabulous - beautifully equipped with everything we could possibly need.

April 2019

Excellent location. Cottage was lovely. Garage tested driving skill, but nonetheless great to have it.

April 2019

Very enjoyable stay. Perfect location.

March 2019

Our third visit to Kings Quay. Great property in great location. Feels like home from home.

December 2018

Dangerous metal bar into Bathroom

October 2018

We really enjoyed staying here, probably our last time together due to health issues.

August 2018

Superb property in excellent location, very well equipped in kitchen. Excellent to have use of garage. Comfortable beds and very cosy feel - more a home than a holiday cottage..

August 2018

Truly superb once again! Our family is now the third generation to have stayed at 4 Kings Quay and it never fails to impress! Perfect.

June 2018

Very enjoyable; great location; quaint cottage. Plenty of crockery/cutlery.

June 2018

We had a lovely break - this cottage is a real haven to come back to after a busy day out , and really great to have an enclosed garden and a garage - to have both must be a absolute rarity in central Dartmouth! It is well equipped and furnished, with some lovely period features, and lots of little extras - and we shall most certainly use it again when we have our next family holiday in Dartmouth.

April 2018

A gem. A garage, an enclosed garden and a generous property right in town. A quiet side road, perfect location. The welcome package was wonderful, lemon drizzle cake, treats for the dogs and tea, coffee and milk. Please pass our thanks to the owners. Confession! one of our dogs pulled up a couple of geraniums, hence the replacements on the kitchen table, apologies. Oh, and the garage just takes a Zafira which is pretty good because mine at home doesn't. Marvellous, thank you.

April 2018

Wonderful house, immaculately clean and best location!

March 2018

My wife and I had a lovely time in Dartmouth and our stay was enhanced by the great location of the cottage. We enjoyed ourselves so much we have rebooked for a further week in October/November Very many thanks Peter and Julia

October 2017

It was the perfect property for us. Plenty of room, a great location (no hills!), parking and a secure garden for our dog. Very clean and comfortable too

September 2017

The cottage was lovely, very welcoming. we really enjoyed our stay .

August 2017

Yes had lovely holiday - brilliant for grandchildren!

August 2017

Wonderful ! Our needs were fulfilled The cake was lovely and as before coming home was a wrench. As on my first visit I can still say I wish I lived here though I had 1st floor room this time and not the attic can't get up them stairs as I did last time! Well done to the people who clean ..... Impressed Thank you

May 2017

Really enjoyed our stay and I will definitely book again if I plan a return a visit.

April 2017

We had a super holiday but just a small point if I may. Just wish the bedding was included as its a lot to bring for seven people. Otherwise very happy with location etc.

March 2017

Lovely cottage, stayed many times before. Couldn't work out how to get hot water in attic bathroom taps, shower was fine. Henry Hoover made a shocking noise and had a burning smell, turned it off very quickly thought it would blow up!

Thank you for your review and we are pleased that you continue to enjoy your holidays at 4 Kings Quay. We are sorry to hear about the lack of hot water in the attic bathroom sink and the hoover. We’ve informed the owner who is sorting these issues. We hope to see you again soon. The Toad Hall team.

March 2016

Cottage was far in excess of our expectations .i cannot over emphasise the standard of equipment and condition of cottage

September 2014

Myself and extended family stayed here a few years back and we long to return! Beautiful house, superb location. Actually met the owners and they were extremely friendly and welcoming. Good base for exploring everywhere and plenty of crabbing and cream teas! Can't wait to go again!

August 2014

As I stated before, I cannot fault anything at all and will probably use this company again in the future. The cottage itself was fantastic and made for a wonderful week away in Devon.

May 2014

This was our second stay at 4 Kings and it was lovely to see the improvements the owners have made, particularly the shower and new TV. It is a clean, comfortable and very welcoming property set in a super location.

March 2014

Wow!! A lovely warm cosy house. Just a stones throw away from the town and pubs, yet once you're back you get the feel that you are in the middle of nowhere (so peaceful and quiet bliss). The dog was cosy and comfortable within an hour of being in the house. Thanks for the Cava, chocolates, milk tea. Weather was better than expected so was able to explore Dartmouth and surrounding areas and great beaches. Nice to see so many friendly people everywhere and great that they are all dog lovers. A brilliant location when you have teenagers with you.

May 2013

Although this property and the location was extremely good a really modern bathroom on the first floor would make the stay truly complete

April 2013

We had an amazing holiday even though the weather was not good. The cottage made up for the fact that it was quite cold and rained most days and our dog (and husband) loved the garden. The welcome gifts of food were most welcome and first class......cannot fault anything about it.
