Nestled just beyond the banks of peaceful Bow Creek, an inlet of South Devon’s majestic River Dart, is the oh-so stylish 2 Perchwood Cottage (formerly Perchwood Cottage) within the pretty waterside hamlet of Tuckenhay.  It is perfect for a romantic getaway or a family holiday, and its idyllic position is a great base from which to explore the South Hams where golden beaches, craggy coves and scenic country rambles reign supreme.

Alongside the owners home, 2 Perchwood Cottage is one half of a lovingly refurbished stone cottage which oozes attention to detail, bespoke fabrics, crafted furnishings and an abundance of warm welcoming ambiance.  Its light and airy open plan living area boasts double doors opening into the garden to bring the outside in, and for those cosy winter nights snuggle down amongst the comfy sofas set in front of the wood burner.  A relaxing twin bedroom is complemented by two sleek bathrooms, one with a sumptuous roll top slipper bath, and the piece de resistance is the spacious second floor double bedroom which offers glorious unspoilt views up and down Bow Creek and across to scenic woodland.  Simply relax, unwind and watch the ebb and flow of the tide from an unrivalled vantage point.

For those who can tear themselves away from this peaceful haven, Tuckenhay is a short drive from the eclectic bustling town of Totnes which is renowned for its wide selection of art galleries, boutique shops and Sharpham Vineyard.   Alternatively head downstream to Dartmouth which is a hotspot for sailing activities or perhaps loose yourself along one of the many stunning coastal walks.  After a day’s exploring, why not sip cocktails or sample some delicious local food in one of the two waterside pubs which are both within a short walk from 2 Perchwood Cottage.  This cottage won’t fail to delight!

Access to the owner’s private slipway is available upon request and is ideal for launching dinghies, kayaks and paddleboards at high water.  This at guests’ own risk and need to supply their own life jackets and equipment.

The pretty hamlet of Tuckenhay is peacefully nestled in the picturesque Dart Valley, yet within easy reach of Totnes, Dartmouth and the South Devon coast. Known for its unspoilt tree-lined banks, secret creeks, and sweeping countryside, its natural beauty attracts walkers, bird lovers, photographers, artists, and fishermen, whilst its waterside position lends itself perfectly for sailors, kayakers and paddleboarders.

Tuckenhay is only 20 minutes' drive from the beautiful beach at Blackpool Sands, popular among families, and around half an hour from the famous surfing beach at Bantham. Good beer, friendly service and very good food.

November 2023

Great location, and good for a drink. However, we went there on the regatta weekend , delayed from July and took over an hour to get a drink !,

September 2023

Had a linch and a dinner here. My husband said the moules he had were the best he'd ever tasted. Praise indeed.

August 2023

We ordered a takeaway when we arrived and it was very nice

July 2023

Highly recommend. Visited several times, within walking distance from Perchwood Shippon. Good food and variety. Pleasant inside and out.

May 2023

perfect location excellant food and friendly staff

September 2022

Excellent. Lovely food, helpful staff and a superb location

September 2022

Amazing evenings spent at this pub, crabbing and enjoying a quiet drink whilst watching the boats. The food is amazing too.

August 2022

We visited this pub last year 2021 when we encountered problems I.e. not enough staff, the staff there was were not at all cheerful and welcoming and the cleanliness of the place including the actual tables & the ladies was poor. Sorry to say we tried again this year and there still was not enough staff, there was a five deep queue for the bar who the staff were ignoring because they were giving priority to people who were ordering food! We gave up and went to another establishment. What a shame because it’s in a grand situation Floyd must be turning in his grave!!

June 2022

A lovely place to enjoy a meal. We visited twice & particularly enjoyed sitting by the dock & watching the yachts go back & forth

May 2022

Fabulous place, great food.

April 2022

Lovely pub friendly staff nice atmosphere

November 2021

Very nice, struggling with staff levels and seats rather hard. Food ok

September 2021

Excellent food and location

August 2021

Unfriendly eye rolling waitress. Decided to walk down the road to the Watermans Arms and ate there instead several times!

July 2021

Very very busy and tables not cleared but staff and food were friendly and doing their best in difficult times.

July 2021

We had a table booked for our Tuesday night and had researched the menu at home before we left for hol: so we were surprised to get a more upmarket selection at a quite higher cost! What we had was good, but there was a but! Husband had the lamb and it came with nothing else at all. Service started off well but we had a long wait to order our desserts, not enough staff for volume of customers.

May 2021

Had takeaway fish & chips one night and ate at the pub 2 nights and it was absolutely delicious

December 2019

Good food. Good local walks too.

October 2019

We especially liked the Malsters Arms, which was just a few minutes’ walk away from where we were staying. We enjoyed having a drink sitting outside on the quay, take away fish and chips and an excellent meal in the restaurant (on different days).

October 2018

Good food and friendly staff, would recommend booking

September 2018

Food good but service extremely poor. Staff appeared very disorganised. I think the pub is living off its past history re Keith Floyd. Pub also starting to look a little tired and needs some money spending on it.

July 2018

As we were staying in the village, we tried to eat here one evening, but they were fully booked. The bar man was quite abrupt when we asked for a table, which put us off trying again for another evening. We heard from another couple that they had experienced the same thing, hence why we ate at the Watermans Arms each evening, as they were most welcoming.

June 2018

Great food and service in a delightful village by the river. One of our favourite places.

May 2018

Really lovely meals again here. Very welcoming and accommodating to our two children.

We enjoyed a lovely meal sitting by the river

July 2023

We recently stayed in the local area and visited the Waterman's Arms on several occasions. We really enjoyed our evening's on the riverside and found there was a good selection to eat and drink. We dined at the pub on several occasions and always had great food at a very reasonable price, the handmade pizza's were great and the kids loved it too! looking forward to visit again on our next return visit too the area.

September 2022

A good place for a drink beside the water

September 2022

Love, love, love this pub ?my husband and I discovered it 30+ years ago and then last year rediscovered it. We were back again this year and introduced four new folks to it who also fell in love with it so therefore we were there every day of our holiday. Staff are lovely and they do good honest tasty food, not an extensive menu but that way you know it’s not out of freezer into a mircowave. We were all sad to leave it behind so much so that we booked in for breakfast on our last morning! Great place, proper pub, locals use it too.

June 2022

We enjoyed a very pleasant meal there. The service was swift & so friendly. The area by the river is an absolute delight

July 2021

Great atmosphere and excellent friendly staff who were coping with a very busy pub. Food was basic pub grub but well cooked and presented.

July 2021

A very welcoming pub with a supporting menu to enjoy.

June 2021

Lovely old fashioned country pub and we got a great welcome on both of our visits, we had first visited it some years ago and it was so nice that it hadn’t changed or been ruined with a make over. Staff nice, helpful and very friendly - Nadia our waitress was just great and a good laugh too. We enjoyed our food very much and the ambiance. Cannot wait for our planned return visit next year, Hazel and A.J.

May 2021

Had a couple of pub meals here, a good standard of food in lovely surroundings.

October 2020

This pub was just a few minutes walk from where we were staying. Although the food was good basic pub food it was let down by the 'atmosphere' in the pub.

October 2018

Friendly pub with good food and good service

September 2018

Lovely location, food and service good but basic pub grub.

July 2018

Sorry, my review submitted a few minutes ago was submitted in error, and related to another pub in the area. We enjoyed the food at the Watermans Arms and the service was good. Lovely spot on the river and would recommend.

July 2018

We ate at the Watermans Arms every evening during our stay in Tuckenhay, which was an enjoyable stroll from our cottage. The staff were very welcoming and the menu was quite extensive. We both managed to eat something different each night during our weeks stay and the service was quick. Food was attractively presented and very good; we didn't have one bad experience. We were well looked after by the waitresses and would highly recommend.

June 2018

We visited 3 times. Very friendly pub. Good food, if anything to comment, the portions were on the large side for us.

An unpretentious, welcoming pub with fantastic food.

This is a fabulous village pub and the staff are all so friendly and very welcoming. We stopped off before going onto our holiday home and they had a gin festival going on so of course I ( the wife ) had to have one very good it was too. Got chatting to a lovely group of three couples plus their baby girl and they started off our holiday in a great way.

Don't expect Alton Towers- but if you want a great place to spend the day and keep the kids entertained, then this is the best there is in South Devon. I'd say better for 7-13s than anything over....

Broadsands Beach
(6 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Elberry Cove
(6 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Blackpool Sands
Blackpool Sands
(6 miles)

(35)

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

June 2023

Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.

May 2023

we love this beach always clean good parking clean facilities and good cafe.

September 2022

We did go to this beach, couldn’t go in the sea as it was so rough, was beautiful though. No sand, but still very nice.

September 2022

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

September 2022

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

August 2022

November 2020

Lovely sandy beach. Parked here (£2) whilst doing a circular walk and then returned for a walk along the beach.

November 2020

Dogs allowed on beach out of season, a bracing walk with coffee and millionaire shortbread at the cafe to finish.

October 2020

Great beach really beautiful , even in the rain, as the Venus café is right on the beach and is warm, dry and serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices.

October 2019

One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.

October 2019

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach nestled between steep hills at either end. Excellent facilities including one of the best beach cafes we've ever visited.

September 2019

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

September 2019

Parking charge between £3 - £8 depending on time of year, Also food good but e.g. Hawaiian Prawns (£9) consisted of 5 prawns. Not good value for money.

October 2018

Churston Cove
(7 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(7 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

August 2023

We had an issue mid-way through our stay with regards to our bed and an unfortunate incident with the weather. We cannot be more grateful that the issue was sorted out within an hour with the property owner going above and beyond to help.

July 2023

We had a fabulous week at East Perchwood. It's a really lovely spacious house with lovely tasteful decor and comfortable beds with nice bedding. The friendly owners are just next door and they gave me great local information and let me use their slipway onto the river. The house and garden felt very private. We enjoyed fabulous walks with our dog and I went paddle boarding every day, getting to see lots of the local wildlife from very close up! We had some great meals in The Maltsters Arms, a couple of minutes walk away and The Durant Arms in the next village, a 5 minute drive or 25 minute walk, and at The Anchorstone, slightly further afield in Dittisham - all highly recommended. A magical get away!

September 2022

We had a wonderful stay in this gorgeous cottage, thank you. I would like to mention that most of the plates and cutting knives could do with an upgrade. They are a bit tired. Thank you

September 2022

Lovely property in a great location. Thank you

August 2022

Had another great time, only comment would be that there could do with being a couple more kitchen utensils, something to flip a fried egg and a large spoon, that sort of thing. I’m sure there were more last year.

July 2022

A great disappointment that we had to leave after only 2 days dud to illness, otherwise I’m sure we would have really enjoyed ourselves.

December 2021

We had a wonderful stay. Delightful cottage in excellent location, overlooking the river, amazing view from upstairs window (binoculars and bird book were provided, a welcome addition), the log fire was great as it was really cold when we were staying. Liz, the owner, was friendly and helpful. Would happily stay there again.

November 2021

August 2021

Great stay, very happy

June 2021

Amazing. Probably the nicest self catering we have stayed in. Loved that the appliances were all so easy to use. We have had different experiences elsewhere. I will recommend this cottage to my friends and family. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

May 2021

Had a lovely stay, great location. Not impressed with the 2 pubs in the village! Sharpam vineyard is great. Couldn’t find the barbecue & the television system is very confusing. Wasn’t sure if there was a DVD player, could have done with one as the weather was dreadful! Definitely need stainless steel cutlery ?

May 2021

This was our 2nd visit to Perchwood Cottage, as good as the first time.

October 2019

We h ad a lovely week, location and cottage perfect

September 2019

Wonderful location. Maltsters Arms was the better of two nearby pubs, though this maybe because we managed to sit by the river, every visit. Loved the open plan living space.

August 2019

Lovely cottage, well looked after. Very enjoyable stay.

May 2019

A nice quiet location with lovely views and an excellent pub The Durant Arms in Ashprington.

March 2019

Thank you for a delightful week in this beautiful cottage. The delicious cream tea on arrival was a much appreciated welcome. Lots of lovely days out as well as local walks, a great opportunity to reconnect with my family's Devon roots. We hope to come and stay again!

March 2019

We have had a lovely week in this cosy and very comfortable cottage. The location is superb and once we had acclimatised ourselves to the local roads Perchwood Cottage was a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Excellent local food and drink at the Maltsters and Durant Arms and, further afield, at The Angel (Dartmouth) and Riverford Field Kitchen (Staverton). Thanks to Liz and Alan for their help and hospitality and for the lovely cream on our arrival. Cheers!

March 2019

A really delightful cottage in a peaceful location l. The owners introduced themselves , ready to help with any queries. We loved sitting in the seating area in the attic watching the wildlife.

February 2019

Lovely house, nice quiet location. Really enjoyed our stay.

November 2018

Beautiful cottage in idyllic setting! Couldn't recommend Perchwood Cottage highly enough.

November 2018

We have stayed in a number of beautiful locations in the South Hams and this is one of the very best. Equally the quality of Perchwood Cottage and the evident pride that the owners take in their property is most pleasing.

October 2018

Perch wood was certainly one of the best cottages I have stayed in anywhere. It was spotless on arrival, the location was magical and the beds where extremely comfortable. To be able to walk my border terrier through the woods with the river alongside was wonderful to be able to enjoy the peace and quiet.

October 2018

The cottage was lovely - one of the very best we have stayed in. It was beautifully appointed, well equipped, warm and cosy. The views from the upstairs bedroom window overlooking the creek proved entertaining. We spent quite some time watching the coming and going of the tide and antics of the all the different birds. We especially liked the Malsters Arms, which is just a few minutes’ walk away. We enjoyed having a drink sitting outside on the quay, take away fish and chips and an excellent meal in the restaurant (on different days). The food at the Watermans Arms was good but let down by the 'atmosphere' in the pub. Dragon, our wire haired dachshund, enjoyed his holiday as well. He was welcomed almost everywhere we went and was given lots of treats. He especially enjoyed Café Alf Fresco in Dartmouth where they gave him sausage. Bow Creek would have been the perfect location except for the very narrow roads leading in to and out of the area. At times, it was stressful negotiating our way past tractors, vans and cars especially since invariably there was another vehicle immediately behind you. Alan, Angela and Dragon

October 2018

A stunning property, maintained to the highest standard by the owners who live in the adjoining cottage. Excellently equipped and with high end soft furnishings.

July 2018

We had a lovely stay. The cottage was in a fantastic position, with amazing views from the bedroom windows. Perfect for dogs as the ground floor has flags and there is a door cutting off access to the bedrooms. Local beaches are lovely, although the access lanes are VERY narrow and driving puts your reversing skills to the test as and when you meet oncoming traffic. We visited House of Marbles which has a lovely café and again you can take dogs. 3 pubs within walking distance, all good food. Would highly recommend this cottage. Modern and stylish furnishings, very clean. Totnes is only a short drive away and a lovely town, well worth a visit.

June 2018

Loved everything, only problem we could not let our mad Springer spaniel in garden .

May 2018

Couldn't fault the whole experience

December 2017

Had a lovely week. Very dog friendly and good local pubs.

November 2017

Just perfect! So nice to find a home from home...

November 2017

We have stayed in many dog friendly cottages over the last 10 years and Perchwood Cottage is probably one of the nicest we have ever stayed in. Great location with two great pubs that both do fab food within a couple of minutes walk. Could not really ask for anything more. Would highly recommend.

October 2017

Had a lovely relaxing holiday in a superb property .The weather was very good & there are plenty of good walks in the area & a little further afield .Had one little problem whilst there with the shower door & contacted Toad Hall ,the problem was dealt with swiftly & no further problems encountered . From booking the holiday & speaking to Toad Hall staff & the owner also contacted us as she was going away the week we were arriving ,there is nothing we can fault . We can highly recommend this property & whoever goes ther won’t be disappointed. What you see online is what you get .Spot on .

September 2017

September 2017

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and, indeed, have already booked for next year.

June 2017

May 2017

Beautiful cottage. Lovely stay

February 2017

The cottage was lovely - tastefully decorated and well-equipped - and the owners very welcoming. The cottage is well situated for access to friendly, local riverside pubs and close to countryside for walking. A relaxing, dog-friendly holiday location!

February 2017

Perchwood Cottage was immaculate and comfortable. The owners being literally next door were helpful but not intrusive whatsoever. Superb week for my wife, myself and our two Springers .... 10/10

February 2017

The cottage was one of the best that we have stayed at.

This was an excellent cottage with a great location, the owner was lovely, made sure we were happy with everything and was available in the event we had any problems, which we didn't !

March 2016

Staff on the phone at Toad hall cottages were very helpful too. Thank you

December 2015

Lovely cottage, very tastefully decorated and furnished with every mod con. Spotlessly clean.

December 2015

Fab cottage and location. Great walks to Dittisham, Totnes and Sharpham (via river). Three good pubs in walking distance, what more could we want!

December 2015

Perchwood Cottage is in an exceptionally beautiful location. To 'perch' up top and awake to nature waking up in all its autumnal glory has been a treat. Simply elegant and stylish. This has been our best cottage to play, sleep, eat and be in front of the fire. Thank you.

September 2015

The cottage was really lovely. Owners very helpful and use of the slipway and kayak a great bonus. Location by the creek provided wonderful views from the top bedroom and we could have happily stayed there just watching the changing tide if the weather had been poor. Luckily though weather was good and we could enjoy breakfast on the terrace and visit favourite haunts in the area. Well positioned for an easy stroll to the Maltsters Arms and the Waterman's Arms. Very comfortable inside including good bathrooms and wood burner if nights get chilly. Didn't want to leave - We will definitely return.
