East Portlemouth is small village in a fantastic location, giving you the best of both worlds: you can enjoy the glorious golden sandy beaches and laid back atmosphere right on your doorstep, or take the short hop across on the passenger ferry to the bustling and lively town of Salcombe.
This area is a hub for sailing and water-sports enthusiasts, and we even have a holiday cottage with its own private beach and mooring if you want to bring your own boat! If you’re feeling adventurous you might enjoy kayaking or paddle-boarding down the Salcombe estuary towards the nearby town of Kingsbridge, rewarding yourself with lunch at the popular waterside Crabshell Inn, just be sure to check tide times so you don't get stranded on the mud before you get back again!
From Salcombe, pick up the well-trodden but tranquil South West Coast Path and head to Hope Cove which has two beaches, a couple of cafés and a pub. Alternatively from East Portlemouth, ramble towards Prawle Point, Devon's most southerly point, where you’ll find a Watchstation manned by volunteers and magnificent views out to sea. This is also a superb spot for birdwatching as many migratory species gather here before taking flight. If you take a diversion about a kilometre inland to East Prawle, you’ll find refreshments at the Pigs Nose Inn or the village shop and café.
As Salcombe is brimming with holidaymakers enjoying the numerous shops, cafés and restaurants, in East Portlemouth you can sit back and relax, far (well, far enough!) from the madding crowd and simply enjoy spectacular views of the water and surrounding South Devon hills.
A holiday cottage in East Portlemouth is a peaceful base for a relaxing holiday in the Salcombe area.

Lovely sunday lunch. Live music downstairs but we were sat upstairs so couldn't hear it which was a shame. Staff all really nice and friendly.
October 2023
Omg what a gorgeous pub! Stunning roast dinner on the Sunday we were there. Staff greeted us with a friendly attitude and we weren’t rushed to take our table but offered a space for a drink by the stream. After lunch there was a fab duo playing on the terrace. Loved it and will be back
September 2023
Good food and beer but a little expensive. Potatoes and veg are extras.
July 2023
The best roast dinner we've had in a long time! Well worth a visit. Excellent service too!
September 2022
Brilliant restaurant and pub.
September 2022
Lovely pub in a nice location. Restaurant food was very nice, but this is not your normal “pub food” it’s high class, using local produce. The prices reflect this… it would be worth ringing up and asking when the next “high tide BBQ” is, as you don’t need to book for this and it looked very tasty !! Folks arrive on boats up the estuary and visit for a pint and a burger!
August 2022
Excellent food and service, with a great atmosphere. Only difficulty was finding somewhere to park the car
August 2022
We ate here twice during our stay in South Pool, on both occasions the food and service were excellent. The Millbrook is very dog friendly and does get busy so booking is essential.

September 2021
Sadly we were unable to have a meal here as they were fully booked all week. I guess it must be good, but I’ll never know.
September 2021
Very disappointed had visited before and had a great experience, this time aftwr booking 4 months in advance we waited 1 hour for good and then the chicken was not cooked through. We also had another booking and they decided to close the pub and didn't even email us, inonly knew as I saw on their Facebook page. Very disappointing.

The Millbrook has a new bridge at the back to a grassy area with picnic tables, so great for kids. They do an outside BBQ at the front 5-9pm in the summer, also great for kids supper. A lovely old pub in an idyllic location!

Outstanding Sunday roast EVEN IF the lamb and the beef look exactly the same, they ain't. Fabulous staff too!

My husband and I ate at Millbrook tonight, absolutely beautiful meal and great service, thank you!
May 2017
An interesting and different menu- think top end gastro pub. Lovely place to be, very friendly owners and helpful staff.
May 2017
Great pub, great atmosphere.
May 2017
The Millbrook Inn clear only wants rich adults to come and visit, its menu does not welcome children and this is a great shame.

July 2023
Great service and coffee.
June 2023
Lovely lunch on a beautiful sunny Sunday lunch in mid September! A welcome drink and food after a dog swim at the beach opposite. Food was lovely, yes a little expensive, however you do pay for the location, which is worth every penny!
September 2022
Excellent service and lovely food. A lifesaver considering there are few options to eat in East Portlemouth.
July 2022
Friendly cup of tea after a walk back from the beach.
June 2022
Yummy Felafel wraps with a great view of the 'goings on' on the water below. It can get busy but we sat and ate outside so it suited me well in these weird times! Not cheap but very nice for a snack.

Gara Rock, East Portlemouth TQ8 8FA (T: 01548 845945)
Staff not friendly. Breakfast only open to guests. Bar only open to guests when we were there. Information needs updating.
November 2023
We stopped for a coffee at Gara Rock hotel after getting caught in a storm! It was a great refuge for 30 minutes. And the staff are lovely. They used to do nice cream teas but don’t anymore as it has become really posh which is a bit of a shame.
October 2023
We had one of the best meals we have ever had in the Gara Rock Restaurant. Really lovely food. Very friendly and helpful staff and amazing views of the coast.
October 2023
LOVELY SETTING BUT VERY DISAPPOINTING QUALITY OF MEAL AND OVER LENGTHY TIME BETWEEN STARTERS AND MAINS.
October 2023
Excellent food, stunning views, very friendly staff
September 2023
Glorious spot to sit in the sun sipping a chilled lemonade. However in September they do not serve afternoon tea.
September 2023
we had lunch here on the thursday of our stay. this is a very stylish and luxurious hotel and the restaurant lives up to the hype. we had a window table in a glass walled dining room so everyone gets to enjoy the amazing views from here. Food was excellent, not inexpensive, but very well worth coming here for a treat.
July 2023
We have visited several times after walking the costal path and been delighted with the service and food. This time we were directed to an outside van, which was disappointing.
July 2023
Lovely location but very expensive.
July 2023
We went for a walk at Gara beach and stopped off here for a coffee to sit and admire the wonderful views. Nearly £15 for 3 drinks ( 2 coffees & a coke) We checked out the menu for dinner but decided not to book, given price and menu options didn’t appeal ( they do change menu frequently though)
April 2023
Fabulous lunch and what an amazing location!
September 2022
Disappointingly shut to outside guests for a whole week during our visit.
July 2022
Superb meal with an amazing view!
April 2022
FANTASTIC LOCATION,VERY EXPENSIVE AND SHORT STAFFED
September 2021
We stayed locally to this hotel and on 2 occasions tried to go in for a drink and to use the electric charger, which is advertised as a destination charger. The staff, on both occasions, were rude and abrupt.
August 2021
Fabulous! Visited twice, first time for lunch in the restaurant after working up an appetite after the hour’s coastal walk and then secondly for dinner and to see the sun set. A beautiful vista, excellent food and lovely staff.
July 2021
Lovely meal in a restaurant with a great view.
June 2021
Fantastic setting . Sadly restaurant wasn’t open but bacon baps and coffee available from the coffee van - lovely !
May 2021
Stunning location and good food and services.
September 2020
Fantastic service from front of restaurant manager. Food was very good
July 2020
Amazing view, a really great spot for a coffee. We had lunch here which was very pricey. The food was ok, the children’s burgers burnt and ours passable. I wouldn’t recommend it for a dinner or lunch but would go back for tea and cake.
February 2020
What a view
September 2019
We only had pasties and coffee, late morning. The pasties were good but we felt a bit pricey. The staff were mostly very pleasant.
August 2019
We had 3 very enjoyable meals here during our holiday, the food was tasty (particularly the oysters and the white chocolate pudding!) the staff were friendly and accommodating and the restaurant itself is well arranged with a lovely relaxing atmosphere. I hope it continues to do well so we can eat here again in the future.
July 2019
Went for a cream tea, lovely friendly staff who couldn't do enough. Cream tea was the best one we've had. Would highly recommend.
June 2019
Sorry for late review. We stayed here in September and had a fantastic week. The owners were very friendly and the goodies were a lovely touch. The place was immaculate, very well furnished. The bed was so comfortable. The bed linen and towels were spotless. Had a lovely time and still talking about our walks and the fabulous beaches. Do not hesitate to stay here as its an unspoilt area and the Old Cow Shed is the place to stay.
February 2019
The sunset view from here is impressive. The drinks were very pricey £12 for a GnT! The starters were unusual and the fish n chips was ok. Felt a lot to pay to be honest. Dogs welcome which suited us.
October 2018
We had the most wonderful time at the restaurant. Sitting out on the terrace on a glorious September day with the amazing views surrounding us was a stand out experience. The service was enthusiastic and friendly if slightly chaotic. Some of the food was exceptional and some a bit disappointing. But that didn’t matter because the whole experience was so good
October 2018
Still very much closed on 040518, and just a busy building site. I'd be surprised if it's open this summer.
May 2018
A must visit after a long walk. Good menu and drink selections. Amazing views. Dog friendly.
September 2017
Superb place for weekends cakes, breakfast and lunch and beautiful dinner menu through the summer and very dog friendly!

Dick and Wills Brasserie Fore Street, Salcombe TQ8 8JG (T: 01548 843408)
Really good food with lovely views of the estuary! Very expensive
July 2023
We had a fabulous take away from Dick and Will's. Very impressed. It would have been even better though if the portions had been slightly larger!
July 2022
Lovely atmosphere and really good food with very friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful setting.
July 2022
We had several takeaways which were delicious. Highly recommend.
July 2022
Best restaurant in Salcombe Excellent food good value for money and location to die for Without doubt the most professionally run eatiery in Salcombe
June 2022
Lovely meal but no drink on presentation of Toad Hall card which needs changing on Toad Hall website
May 2022
We had lovely experiences at this very welcoming restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble for the waiting staff and the food was excellent. So much so we ate there three times! Thank you Dick and Wills. We’ll be back again during our next stay!
October 2021
I ordered 4 meals from the takeaway menu, and all were extremely poor, tasteless, and bland; The burgers were served on soggy buns, the Thai Curry was so runny it was effectively a Prawn Soup, and the fish and chips were totally unappetizing in both appearance, and taste. We also had a reservation in the Restaurant for myself and my Wife for 2 days later. I called the restaurant following our poor takeaway experience to report our disappointment, and that our restaurant booking was now in doubt; their response was a very curt "sorry to hear that, we'll cancel the reservation..." . Having read good reviews previously, I was ready to accept the takeaway was perhaps an aberration (new chef, short staff, food supply issues..?) and give them a second chance. Instead I can only comment on the (very expensive, very poor) takeaway food, and the feeling that this Restaurant has greedily bitten off more than it can chew in continuing a takeaway service when its restaurant is full, and that standards have been sacrificed in the process. Avoid the takeaway at all costs, and be circumspect about the restaurant. Andrew, Glos
September 2021
Always seems to be closed
September 2021
We enjoyed a nice meal here, but it was very expensive and not over welcoming.
August 2021
Excellent !!!!
July 2021
We had a very disappointing takeaway curry. Very expensive and the restaurant did not respond to our criticism. I could not recommend this place.
June 2021
A limited and very expensive menu, indifferent service, crowded tables and ideas above its station make this a place to avoid. Bewilderingly it’s booked out anyhow for the summer already.
June 2021
Lovely location, great food. A tad expensive for small portions.
May 2021
Lovely restaurant, warm welcome and excellent food and service. Busy during peak times, perfect in October ????, highly recommend it
November 2019
A little disappointing this year. Food wasn’t as good, and ambiance was missing in the restaurant. In good weather, it’s a super place to sit outside.

Sailing tuition in a Salcombe Yawl, or leisurely skippered sails around the harbour are also available in the safe hands of experienced local sailor Scratch Hitchen.

We have been booking with them for a few years and always enjoy our day beach hopping or even pub crawling! It's a novel idea using the boat to get to The Crabshell Inn or The Millbrook Inn. April 2022
Lovely beach and you can walk to Gara rock from here and along beach to the ferry crossing to salcombe
March 2022
Great beach. Bumpy access road as sand has blown across it. Slightly marred by 1-2 selfish dog owners who have left their calling cards
November 2021
We were lucky enough to spend 3 days on this beautiful beach. Fabulous place ??
September 2021
Fantastic beach one of the best in the area. Have to get to car park (National Trust) very early if you don't want to carry all your stuff to the beach.
September 2021
We attempted to drive to Mill Bay car park- not a good idea in August! No parking spaces, no turning points. We tried another day, parking at Gara Rock and asking down the bridle path. We have a disabled granddaughter, the walk down was manageable but the return walk was much more difficult. Beautiful beach and worth the walk.
September 2021
Lovely, clean, sandy beach in wonderful location with beautiful views and easy access from Salcombe via the East Portlemouth ferry.
August 2021
Lovely beach, clear water
July 2021
Lovely beach for children to play on.
June 2021
Favourite beach going back to my childhood. The road to it was closed due to a land slip in January. Talked to the workmen who said it was due to reopen November 2020.
October 2020
Lovely beach but this year overrun with people arriving by motor boat- so it felt a little worrying for kids to swim out among them,(and frankly it spoilt the view) and engine noise/fumes at the end of the day as everyone left!
September 2020
Wonderful
September 2019
I endorse all of the other favourable comments and emphasise the urgent need to make the lavatories hygienic. In fact all of the public conveniences are anything but convenient.
September 2019
Lovely beach, handy to have little food caravan selling crepes, drinks and ice cream, good quality too. The toilets were disgusting though and should have been cleaned more regularly, also waste bins overflowing.
August 2019
Great place for a day on the beach. Safe and dog friendly
August 2019
Lovely large sandy beach, perfect for young children who want to play in the strem and build dams, or play in the sea without large waves!
July 2019

October 2018
Beautiful beach lovely and clean. Small car park free to N.T. members. Highly recommended. Drawback no immediate café available. Venus café nearest but a trek if not mobile.

Lovely beach well worth a visit. Dog friendly as well. Well worth the £7-50 national trust car parking fee.
July 2018
amazing beach, dog friendly, only downside is the toilets near the National Trust hut are very poor

September 2021

September 2021
Beautiful sandy and pebbly cove... we spent 2 gorgeous days there with our dog! Be prepared for steep climb back to Gara Rock restaurant but worth it!
July 2021
After driving an hour through Devon drizzle we were not impressed to be turned away because we weren't guests. "or you can sit outside and have coffee from the Garavan". Lesson learned: Don't go unless you're booked.
October 2020
We had a beautiful meal with stunning views at Gara Rock. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was divine. We also had spa treatments for the group, who left feeling relaxed and radiant.
September 2020
Lovely secluded beach, dog friendly and easy to get to.
July 2020
Go there for the coastal walk. Fantastic. Stop at the hotel for a coffee, the views are stunning
September 2019
A lovely beach (although quite "weedy"), almost deserted the morning we were there, and well worth the tricky path down and the steep climb back
August 2019
My favourite beach in the country, nothing run of the mill here, lovely views
July 2019
Lovely beach. We arrived early after a steep walk down the cliff path. Had the beach initially to ourselves! Starts to get busier as the day goes on.

Sunny Cove
(2 miles)
(7)
Accessed either by boat, via a 10-minute walk through the woods from parking at Mill Bay, or a stroll from the Salcombe to East Portlemouth Ferry, Sunny Cove is a sandy beach which, as you might expect, catches the sun throughout the day, weather pending. It’s on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary opposite North Sands beach and Fort Charles, the ruined fortification that was originally constructed during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the Kingsbridge Estuary against French and Spanish Pirates. It’s a relatively gentle spot for swimming and ideal for picnics, lazy summer afternoons, and reaching on kayaks and paddle boards from other nearby beaches as well as being the perfect spot for building sandcastles. That said, the tide can come in quite quickly so make sure you don’t get caught out and be careful of the swell when bringing boats into the beach. Head there for the day in the summer or as a stop off en route to the café at Gara Rock or a longer walk along the coast path towards Prawle Point. Dogs are welcome all year round but keep in mind that there aren’t any facilities in the immediate vicinity (it would be a 10-15-minute walk along wooded footpaths) so take your sandwiches with you!
Gorgeous, quiet and very clean beach.
June 2023
Stunning bay ,Quiet and secluded
October 2021
Lovely little beach worth the walk or paddle!
July 2021
We didn’t know about this. Whilst appreciating the need to keep things to a minimum, local information like this could have been uploaded digitally. We made 2 attempts to locate a beach without success.
October 2020
The beach and the views were superb
September 2019
A nice sandy beach, crowded on a sunny day. but access quite tricky - a long walk for children if no room in the NT car park, and then a long walk back afterwards.
August 2019
Best reached by direct boat access but easy enough walk from ferry or mill bay car park. Our favourite beach.

North Sands, Salcombe
(3 miles)
(17)
The first beach as you walk along the Cliff Road out of Salcombe, North Sands sits in a valley and is a sandy horseshoe shaped beach that’s expansive at low tide. Thanks to its shape and location, it’s extremely popular in the summer because there’s plenty of space to set up camp for the day with buckets, spades and fishing nets in tow for avid marine biologists and sand castle connoisseurs. The beach has a fresh water stream running through it from the top of the valley, which, aside from providing hours of entertainment for accompanying dogs and a marvellous place to wash the sand off your feet, also means that the beach is largely wet sand, so don’t forget to take something to sit on if you’re heading there for the day. Popular with swimmers, despite the chilly water, North Sands provides a wonderful view out of the mouth of the Salcombe estuary and into the deep blue yonder so, for keen photographers, it’s ideal. If the weather is right then it’s a favourite amongst body boarders or even surfers on choppier days, and it’s a great place to take the paddle boards and kayaks if you happen to have them. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, unlike many of the beaches in the area, there are toilets over the road and there’s a car park with charges from £1 throughout the year. The cherry on top of this beautiful location is The Winking Prawn café and restaurant that’s right next to the beach. Open all year round they serve everything from breakfast, lunch and dinner to coffee, tea and cake, and in the summer they provide a barbecue in the garden overlooking the sea. It is popular though so leave a little time to queue for that Salcombe Dairy honeycomb ice cream in the height of summer!
A wonderful sheltered bay, the sea is so clean and lovely to swim in. Disabled access and dog friendly with the lovely cafe close by.
October 2023
Very nice beach. Very clean.
July 2023
Swim here daily when in Salcombe.
June 2023
A great dog friendly beach. Check the tide times, go at low tide, makes a fabulous beach to look for shells, relax in the sun, and walk in the stuff with your dog.
May 2023
Excellent beach for dogs
May 2023
Nice beach it's great dog friendly beach
May 2023
What a beautiful place to walk to along Coast Road from Salcombe town. The view through the trees to the amazing colour of the water is breathtaking and North Sands is spectacular. We could have sat just people watching all day. The winking prawn is a lovely place for a drink or bite to eat.
July 2022
Lovely beach which is a quick walk down from the property, food and toilets but neither used.
July 2022
Brilliant beach for all the family within walking distance of cottage. Car park and toilets nearby.
May 2022
Fantastic clean beach. Dog friendly
September 2021
Excellent clean and safe dog friendly beach. Very friendly and helpful locals.
May 2021
Lovely clean family friendly beach
July 2020

September 2019
North Sands is a wonderful beach great for families, the winking prawn restaurant is great for anything from snacks to a full meal stunning views out to sea
October 2018
Very nice beach for dog lovers and good café.
July 2018
Gorgeous, just stunning! Brilliant beach, fabulous cafe (Winking Prawn) and good priced car park! Love, love, love it!!
August 2017
Superb safe and stunningly picturesque
June 2017
Lannacombe Beach
(3 miles)
(13)
Rugged and unspoiled, Lannacombe is the beach for those looking for total escapism on their South West holiday. Small and perfect for escaping from the summer crowds, it’s one of the best places to visit to simply enjoy the Devon scenery in all its natural glory. There’s a small car park just behind the beach so do get there early in order to guarantee a space, although there is further parking a short walk away if need be. Dogs are welcome at the beach throughout the year and as it offers access to the Coast Path it’s a good idea to combine your visit with a walk to take in the views of sea and countryside, perhaps towards Start Point where there is further parking around 30-40 minutes away on foot. At low tide the beach offers gentle rock pooling so it’s a lovely spot to head to for a quiet afternoon with the family, building sandcastles and eating sandwiches if you remember to bring them. There aren’t any cafes and restaurants immediately on site, so do remember to take anything you need with you, and there aren’t any toilets in the near vicinity either, so that’s worth keeping in mind when you plan your day. If you have been on holidays in Devon and Cornwall before you will also know that you need to watch our for the tide at many of the beaches, including this one in order to avoid disappointment or getting wet, you can pick up a tide timetable at local post offices!
Lovely walk along the coast from Horizons. Beautiful sandy beach
April 2024
Lannacombe is a lovely beach! The beach is gentle and slopes nicely into the sea. We swam in October and it was beautiful. If you haven’t been there are no facilities and only parking for about 8-9 cars so get there early in peak season. It’s on the SW Coast path and we have walked from East Prawle though takes a while. Fabulous beach. Keep it to yourself!
October 2023
Best beach in the area, spent a lovely sunny day here.
September 2023
A favourite beach of us, we spent another lovely afternoon there, superb view and great for rock pooling.
April 2022
Fantastic beach! Secluded and beautiful. Windy narrow lanes to reach it but worth it. We were able to get a car space in the small car park which was great. Our dog loved it and so did we!
October 2021
Best beach in the world! Dont tell anyone or else we will never get one of the 8 parking spaces!
September 2021
Unspoilt and away from the crowds. Perfect secret
August 2021
Beautiful unspoilt beach.
July 2021
We walked here from East Prawle, it was a delightful find and we explored the beach whilst en route along the coastal path. I imagine it would be extremely busy in high season but we were the only ones there so felt very lucky to have found it.
June 2021
Lovely but inaccessible down rough extremely narrow lane with very tiny parking & limited turning , best to walk from Start Point car park
October 2020
Very limited parking (but we got lucky!). Wide, spacious but covered in dense seaweed - what's happened? It never used to be so weedy.
August 2019
Excellent secluded beach once you find it. Signs would be helpful but this would be detrimental as visitors would "flood" the small car park. Well worth visiting and walking along the stunning cliff walks
September 2018
A lovely beach where we enjoy sitting and eating our sandwiches after walking from Start Point.
May 2018
April 2024
Yes we enjoyed our stay very much, we expected the house to be old-worldy as it was an old thatched cottage but the shower was awful. We also struggled with the wifi signal even though there is a booster box. The garden is sentational. we would definitely return to the area but not to Goodshelter because of the shower.
October 2023
This was the third time we had stayed atGoodshelter which shows how much we like it. When our children were young we stayed for many years at Waterhead Cottage so we know the area well.in those days, you could see Goodshelter from the road but now it is hidden in trees- we think a pruning/ felling of the trees on the far boundary would let in more light and reveal a sunny field. All in all, we love being there: our daughter thinks it is “the best place in all the world.”
October 2023
As alwlays we enjoyed our stay, the cottage and grounds are so beautiful.
August 2023
I am grateful to Mark at Coastal Concierge for contacting the owner on my behalf to organise a clothes horse! Due to the wet weather and consequently wet clothes, we needed somewhere to dry them as we couldn't use the washing line in the garden. The branch of the tree to which it was attached was rotten and had fallen to the ground. Although the location of this house is beautiful, we felt it was a little too remote for us.
June 2023
I always enjoy the peace and charm of Goodshelter. The garden is a delight.
May 2023
Excellent cottage. Slightly marked down on equipment on the heating front - clear instructions needed on control of the night storage radiators, and how to light the Rayburn. Also, an updated (more powerful) Wi-Fi router would be a good idea. But we loved the place, our 4th visit.
October 2022
As always we had a wonderful holiday at Goodshelter and have booked the cottage again for next year
June 2022
Loved Goodshelter, especially the magical, peaceful garden. Salcombe Paddleboarding absolutely worth visiting!
June 2022
Such a fabulous garden, wonderful holiday for children, dogs and super convenient for anyone that enjoys taking a boat or paddle board out on the creeks. The swings at the far end of the garden are brilliant for young children.
April 2022
Absolutely loved it, my new Happy Place!
April 2022
Beautiful cottage and garden had a long weekend l their last week We are ucky enough to be going back soon. Only one week remaining at this gorgeous house this year so we shall be back very soon.
November 2021
Chocolate box cottage with an amazing garden, perfect size for a family holiday.
September 2021
We still love it here.
August 2021
Absolutely love this place
June 2021
We absolutely loved this place and haven't stopped telling our friends about it. Okay, we missed a proper shower and some of the furnishings were a little dated, but massive compensations in the beautiful garden, the wonderful location and the beauty of the property
June 2021
Lovely house and garden, very peaceful and total privacy.
June 2021
Really enjoyed it thanks
October 2020
An exceptional property hope to visit again
August 2020
Yes. After spending so long at home my daughter and grandson of 3 years old were able to have space. The gardens are spacious and the property plenty of space.
October 2019
Dogs enjoyed it too
September 2019
We always enjoy our stay
July 2019
Had a really wonderful time the garden is wonderful and area is outstanding
June 2019
Dream location coming back next year with or without fridge and bath problems!
April 2019
The house is stunning and full of character and the gardens even more beautiful, interesting and exciting to explore than we had hoped. The tidal problem wasn't as bad as expected. We had to stop ourselves from picking up secateurs and helping with the gardening and can only imagine the wonderful foliage throughout the year!
April 2019
We utterly loved our stay at Goodshelter. We normally spend our holiday walking the dog, but the garden here was AMAZING, so our hound was knackered after a walk round it (which takes about half hour!). Perfect for two young families (2 sets of parents, a 4 month old, a 9 month old and two three year olds). The fact we had two single rooms for the toddlers meant they were in bed by 7 and not up all night chatting! The kids did need supervising in the garden due to water/steep drops but each trip out there after breakfast and dinner was a mini adventure! Mill Bay beach and Sunny Cove were gorgeous and we ventured to our favourite Mattiscombe Sands too. All easy to access from the cottage by car. We even took the boat out from the cottage! We are hoping to come back next year before our youngest two get too big for travel cots... we will be so sad to outgrow Goodshelter!
December 2018
The office staff are superb...a great team! Please don’t change anything! Look forward to booking with you again. Best wishes.
October 2018
Fantastic garden, lovely location
July 2018
Another relaxing and peaceful visit to this charming cottage with its lovely garden
June 2018
Most definitely yes. We loved the garden and location. Would love to come back.
April 2018
Accessibility reports were spot on! You obviously care about your disabled customers!! Greatly appreciated!!
July 2017
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The cottage is in a lovely location and the garden is stunning. We would definitely consider returning for another stay.
June 2017
I caught my first Bass, whilst flyfishing in the creek, mere feet from the cottage garden. It doesn't get better than that! Spotted flycatchers nesting in the garden and wonderful birdsong were delightful. Superb cottage, garden and location made it a lovely holiday, enhanced by brilliant weather.
June 2017
This was our eighth visit to Goodshelter. We love the cottage, the garden and it's secluded position.
May 2017
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Goodshelter, so much so we have book another week in October and also hope to go again next Spring.
April 2017
A lump of plaster had fallen down from behind the beam above the fireplace which we only spotted the first evening of our stay. The plaster had fallen into the fireplace which (understandably) meant the cleaner hadn't been able to spot it. Not important to us and didn't make a difference to our stay at all, but just letting you know that it was like that when we arrived. Thanks for another great holiday!
April 2017
We continue to be delighted by the way that the owners have maintained the garden laid out by George and Lavender Meade-King from the 1950s to 1980s.
April 2017
Lovely holiday in a beautiful spacious very well presented chocolate box cottage and garden. Getting to the isolated and tidal location was sometimes difficult but this added to the interest. The only thing we would have liked was a proper shower and from a male point of view, a toilet seat that stayed up on it's own. We all loved what we called the "Quiet Lounge and dinning room" without the temptation of T.V. with everything, although our 13 month old grandson made it anything but quiet. We had a lovely week, the weather even helped for March.
Thank you for your feedback, we have passed this to the owners. At high tide the property does need to be accessed via the path as cars will not get through to the drive. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and we hope you return soon. Many Thanks, The Toad Hall Team.

Goodshelter is such a picturesque cottage, with an absolutely beautiful, large sunny garden, stretching along the stream valley. A place to really relax and even enjoy some rowing on the nearby creek with the rowing boat supplied. We will definitely return.

this was a beautiful cottage with the most enchanting garden we loved it and would definitely go back...hopefully in the summer

Millbrook Inn South Pool, Kingsbridge TQ7 2RW (T: 01548 531581)
June 2022
Very friendly village pub. The food was very good.
June 2022
This was closed for refurbishment but have used in the past and its well worth a visit
March 2022
Really friendly and excellent roast, well worth the walk from Salcombe via the ferry.
October 2021
Evening meal here was delicious .Excellent quality food and good service .
October 2021
Would give more stars but place was closed for most of the week we were there. However did manage a drink and a very tasty meal on last evening.
August 2021
A lovely local pub
June 2021
Very good service, super-friendly staff, excellent food even though they are only just getting going, and fab location.
June 2021
Amazing, we had dinner here, drinks and even tried the BBQ. Lovely staff and the children enjoyed playing in the stream.
August 2019
Nice place for drinks but could be difficult getting to the bar as it is so tiny inside.
August 2019
spent 3 evenings in the pub and very happy with it.....and a great band playing New Years day
January 2019
Great atmosphere, good selection of beers.comfortable & welcoming & cosy.had food which was excellent but v expensive.cheapest main was about £15.a few cheaper options would have made this pub perfect.staff very helpful & welcoming
September 2018
The Millbrook has a new bridge at the back to a grassy area with picnic tables, so great for kids. They do an outside BBQ at the front 5-9pm in the summer, also great for kids supper. A lovely old pub in an idyllic location!
September 2018
Outstanding Sunday roast EVEN IF the lamb and the beef look exactly the same, they ain't. Fabulous staff too!
May 2018
A beautiful old pub with real ales, very good food and friendly staff. Right on a stream, lovely wood fire. Lovely garden for the summer.
November 2017

August 2017
My husband and I ate at Millbrook tonight, absolutely beautiful meal and great service, thank you!
May 2017
An interesting and different menu- think top end gastro pub. Lovely place to be, very friendly owners and helpful staff.
May 2017
Great pub, great atmosphere.
May 2017
The Millbrook Inn clear only wants rich adults to come and visit, its menu does not welcome children and this is a great shame.

Lovely lunch on a beautiful sunny Sunday lunch in mid September! A welcome drink and food after a dog swim at the beach opposite. Food was lovely, yes a little expensive, however you do pay for the location, which is worth every penny!

May 2022
Great little cafe but really expensive!
April 2022
Closed by 10th September!
September 2021
Usually love it here, this year they had closed for the season Sun 5th September!!
September 2021
Very convenient. It would be even better if they could sell a few newspapers so as to avoid making a trip to the other side.
September 2019
lovely icecreams & friendly staff, only downside was that they closed early if it was not busy
July 2018
nice paninis

Gara Rock Restaurant
(2 miles)
(32)
In one of the most stunning locations in South Devon with panoramic sea views, you're in for a treat at the newly refurbished Gara Rock Restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon teas and dinner daily, all year round. Chef Lewis' seasonal dishes feature ingredients from local producers and his own kitchen garden. Eat al fresco on the terrace overlooking the beach or in winter watch the waves crashing from the comfort of the restaurant with its huge floor to ceiling windows.
September 2017
Dinner was amazing. Pre book a table and ask for a window view of the bay. Lunch was good. Staff really lovely.

Dick & Wills Brasserie
(2 miles)

A sophisticated waterside brasserie serving high quality local fish, meat and shellfish accompanied by an extensive wine list. Eat inside in the chic restaurant or outside on the large terrace which enjoys fabulous views over the estuary.

Yawl & Launch Hire Salcombe
(2 miles)
(1)
Hiring a traditional Salcombe Yawl or launch is a fabulous way to explore the Salcombe estuary taking in the beaches and wildlife along the way. The Salcombe Yawl is an attractive 16ft dingy unique to Salcombe suitable for racing or cruising with the family, or alternatively, less experienced sailors can hire a sturdier harbour launch with inboard engine to potter from beach to beach. Both are available on a weekly basis along with everything you need to have and enjoyable yet safe time on the water. Sailing tuition in a Salcombe Yawl, or leisurely skippered sails around the harbour are also available in the safe hands of experienced local sailor Scratch Hitchen.

Estuary trip on Kirby boat was perfect. Lots of interesting information and history without being too much. Lovely views and close up cormorants.
August 2022
Brilliant company - hired a boat for the hour. The owner and his mother were really helpful and couldnt have been more helpful.
April 2022
Very friendly and informative staff. Would definitely use their services again
October 2021
Helpful staff, great time on the water.
September 2021
A visit to Salcombe wouldn't be complete without some time on the water and Whitestrand have the perfect selection of boats to suit those looking for a few hours or a day on the water; whether you're first timers or experienced. We have been booking with them for a few years and always enjoy our day beach hopping or even pub crawling! It's a novel idea using the boat to get to The Crabshell Inn or The Millbrook Inn. Some understanding of tides is useful. Life jackets provided and children & dogs are welcome aboard.

Gorgeous little Bay close to where we were staying our dog. Loved fetching his ball in and out the water. Very pretty spot.
July 2019
Great beach
October 2018
A fabulous beach. Especially great fun at low tide for a water loving Labrador. We enjoyed our visits here. We also loved the passenger ferry from here to Salcombe. Beautiful beach.
October 2018
Beautiful beach lovely and clean. Small car park free to N.T. members. Highly recommended. Drawback no immediate café available. Venus café nearest but a trek if not mobile.
September 2018
Lovely beach well worth a visit. Dog friendly as well. Well worth the £7-50 national trust car parking fee.
July 2018
amazing beach, dog friendly, only downside is the toilets near the National Trust hut are very poor
July 2018

June 2022
VERY PEACEFULL AND NO CROWDS
September 2021
Superb location, excellent service. We were unable to book beforehand but were fortunate to be able to secure a table.
July 2018
Sunny Cove
(2 miles)
August 2018
July 2022
