The South West Coast Path is 2 miles away providing some stunning walks, whether you wish to start in Prawle, Beesands or East Portlemouth with suitable stops for refreshments along the way. The village is well located for walkers, who will enjoy the unspoilt countryside, as well as those who like messing about on their boats, or taking to the water on kayaks or paddle boards. It is also close to some fantastic sandy beaches at East Portlemouth, from where you can catch a passenger ferry across to the vibrant town of Salcombe, to appreciate the array of boutiques, pubs and restaurants that line the town's main street.

Just one and a half miles from South Pool you'll find the neighbouring creek-side village of Frogmore, home to a pub and excellent village shop and bakery. Further along the coast road towards the historic naval port of Dartmouth (which is well worth a day trip) you'll pass numerous appealing coastal villages on the way, including Torcross, with its nature reserve and three miles of shingle beach, and one of Devon's most popular beaches, Blackpool Sands.

Lovely sunday lunch. Live music downstairs but we were sat upstairs so couldn't hear it which was a shame. Staff all really nice and friendly.

October 2023

Omg what a gorgeous pub! Stunning roast dinner on the Sunday we were there. Staff greeted us with a friendly attitude and we weren’t rushed to take our table but offered a space for a drink by the stream. After lunch there was a fab duo playing on the terrace. Loved it and will be back

September 2023

Good food and beer but a little expensive. Potatoes and veg are extras.

July 2023

The best roast dinner we've had in a long time! Well worth a visit. Excellent service too!

September 2022

Brilliant restaurant and pub.

September 2022

Lovely pub in a nice location. Restaurant food was very nice, but this is not your normal “pub food” it’s high class, using local produce. The prices reflect this… it would be worth ringing up and asking when the next “high tide BBQ” is, as you don’t need to book for this and it looked very tasty !! Folks arrive on boats up the estuary and visit for a pint and a burger!

August 2022

Excellent food and service, with a great atmosphere. Only difficulty was finding somewhere to park the car

August 2022

We ate here twice during our stay in South Pool, on both occasions the food and service were excellent. The Millbrook is very dog friendly and does get busy so booking is essential.

September 2021

Very disappointed had visited before and had a great experience, this time aftwr booking 4 months in advance we waited 1 hour for good and then the chicken was not cooked through. We felt happy to eat inside with tables well distanced and cleaned after previous customers, while staff and customers, when moving around the eating areas, were expected to wear masks. July 2022

One of the best restaurant meals we have had in a long time. Quality ingredients and I suspect prepared by an actual trained chef which is a rarity these days. Quite pricey but nevertheless good value given the quality. Staff were friendly, efficient and seemed pleased to have you dining with them.

July 2022

Whether you are staying in the village or passing through you must call into the Cricket Inn. They have it all! Good selection of drinks, exceptional food (& I mean exceptional), seaview like nowhere else & all in a modern setting which still retains the history of the village. Then we have the Cricket Inn team who are just A-MAZ-ING. After 30+ years we wouldn't keep returning if it was something special. Keep up the excellent work & hopefully, we'll see you all very soon.

Friendly staff and fabulous food

August 2019

Very convenient of you are staying in Beesands, as we were , and it provides a pretty good selection of dishes for most tastes. The food is absolutely fine - typical pub fare - a bit formulaic - but perfectly acceptable. the service was quite good but they did bring our coffees before the desserts - which was odd. The main courses were quite good but we didn't rate the desserts - disappointing.

June 2019

Absolutely a wonderful find. The food is outstanding. Well known for seafood but their steaks are tasty, tender and succulent too. Very dog friendly too. Would highly recommend negotiating the lanes to Beesands to have a meal at the Cricket Inn. Prices are a bit on the high side compared to other places in the area but this is understandable due to the very high quality of the ingredients used.

June 2019

Excellent beer, brilliant staff and fabulous food. Well worth booking a table as it's very popular. Not cheap, but still good value for money .

May 2019

Excellent food, great with children and dogs welcome

Lovely welcoming place, food is great

March 2019

We got a warm welcome from all at The Cricket Inn, there was a great selection of drinks and fabulous food available. Could we suggest one or two more vegetarian options on the main menu.

March 2019

Great food, grilled fish excellent. Friendly professional staff.

February 2019

This is an excellent pub attracting people from miles around. The food is fantastic, the staff are friendly, there are tables for drinkers and the ales are kept well. What more could you ask for? Well ok the food is a tad pricey....

nice friendly pub - but pricey for what it is . Wasn't really very wowed by food . Felt menu rather ltd & sadly they dont offer a traditional Sunday lunch only regular menu However we tried it a couple of times and left feeling full and not unhappy with what we had

October 2018

Lovely pub, didn't manage to eat as we arrived inbetween service. Dog friendly pub. Niice walk along the front from here.

October 2018

Nice place we had fish n chips was good but not worth the price tag drinks cost to .shame as we would of spent more time there if was bit cheaper but need a bank loan for that lol .

September 2018

Amazing food as always, lovely staff, and fantastic drink selection.

August 2018

Lovely pub in beautiful location. A varied menu with plenty of fresh fish dishes , the fish pie was exceptionally good. Good service and friendly staff who made the effort to pass the time of day even though they were busy. The beer at £5.00 a pint was expensive. Nothing too much trouble. Would visit again.

June 2018

Excellent and varied menu- good value for money . The staff were really friendly and the place had a good atmosphere. It was so convenient as we were only a couple of doors away - so we didn't need to get in the car and brave those narrow , winding and unpredictable Devon lanes!

June 2018

We had a lovely meal at the Cricket Inn, it was up to its usual standards, and the service was excellent; John Dory, seafood carbonara and fish and chips, all superb. That also let us bring in our dog, which was great.

June 2018

We love this pub and always visit at least once when staying in Beesands. Food as good as usual. Maybe staff not as friendly as previous years - particularly the Californian Maitre D'?? Still a great place for a lovely meal!

May 2018

July 2017

Expensive drinks but food good

June 2017

Sunday lunch was very good reasonably priced for location but went back during week had lemon sole on there specials plus one other standard meal and two drinks came to 60 pounds extremely overpriced especially as after charging me 22 pound for the fish the veg was an extra 4 pound .We considered this to be overpriced for what we got .

May 2017

Friendly and efficient staff with good choice of food but somewhat limited for vegetarians. Dog friendly.

April 2017

Wonderful food and impeccable service. Hope you are in business for a good many years you deserve it

June 2023

Visited on a sunny morning in May so quite busy. We were greeted at the entrance, seated inside then left. No menu provided, I had to ask for it. A couple who arrived well after us had their order taken first. We waited for ages. Then discovered there is a half hour hour gap between breakfast orders ending and lunch orders beginning when only cakes are availble, not even a sandwich. Staff were rushed and inattentive, disappointing experience.

Start Point Lighthouse
Start Point Lighthouse
(3 miles)

(10)

Built in 1836 to mark one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English coast, Start Point lighthouse was designed by James Walker and sits on a headland that runs sharply out into the sea on the south side of Start Bay near Dartmouth. Its style is largely influenced by the Gothic movement, and the optic used was the first of its kind. Coastal erosion has affected it over time and the lighthouse was automated in 1993, but it’s still in operation and can now be visited. Tours last around 45 minutes and are on the hour from 11am until 4pm, or 5pm in July and August. Prices start at £4.00 for adults and £2.50 for children – remember to wear sensible shoes and keep in mind that tours are weather dependent… as you might expect!

My dacshund and I walked along the coastal path . Although Start Point was not open at the time, we were not disappointed, the coastal walk was lovely, as we got nearer to the lighthouse, we stood and watched in amazement at the tuna fish jumping high out of the water. It was spectacular to watch . I would thoroughly recommend.

December 2023

Excellent views, we went when it was closed unfortunately but a great walk for the dogs. You have to pay to park but I think it was only £4

June 2023

Sadly lighthouse was closed due to COVID, however it was still worth a visit for the views and the walk along the headlands. It was awesome, saw lots of seals playing around the rocks. Wear good footwear as a little uneven in places, lots places to sit and enjoy the view. Binoculars are a must. I loved it and I’m not a strong Walker

May 2021

If you can visit on a day when you can take a tour it's well worth it. The staff are knowledgable and make the tour really interesting for children and adults alike. It's a narrow & steep climb in places.

April 2021

Great walk along the coast path from Beesands - fantastic views

October 2020

The msot beatiful stratch of coastline I have walked along for a while. We did a circular walk which included Hallsands, and the lighthouse, and would throughly recommend visiting the lighthouse, if just for the views. Be aware thought, that there are limioted ameneities - only a portacabin loo in the carpark

September 2019

Stunning views from here. Great walk along from the car park, very accessible for all levels of fitness. Visitor centre was closed when we arrived for refurbishment at the end of the season but still worth the walk.

October 2018

Had a really interesting tour at the end of September, which was the highlight of our holiday. Out guide, Mary, was very friendly and informative. Would highly recommend this. Fantastic location and views and very interesting history. Thanks Mary.

October 2017

We really enjoyed our visit. My husband and son had a tour (£5 per adult and under 5's free) and thought it was brilliant. Children under 1.1m's tall can not go on the tour so my younger son and I enjoyed the coastal views which were fantastic.

June 2017

Fantastic walk with wonderful views, you'll find the best beach in the South Hams hear, bit of a walk but it is glorious.

Beesands
Beesands
(2 miles)

(45)

Close to Kingsbridge and a favourite amongst residents and holiday makers in the South West, Beesands is a wonderful mile-long shingle beach surrounded by fields and a freshwater lake. You get a real flavour of the West Country here with fresh crab sandwiches for sale nearby and lots of Devon holiday cottages within walking distance to make it really convenient. The beach has won awards from the Marine Conservation Society as well as having The Blue Flag marker to attest to its excellence and high standards, so families and swimmers can be reassured. The beach is popular for surfing and body boarding amongst other water sports including fishing, so tackle is on sale close by. You can pick up light bites at nearby cafes as and when you’re ready, making it easy to spend the whole day running around on the sand and enjoying your seaside holiday to the max. Beesands is very much a beach for everyone thanks to its convenient location, easy and free road parking along most of the beach, level access, and the toilets, cafes and pubs close by. Dogs are also welcome on the beach throughout the year so the whole family can enjoy it!

September 2023

Stunning beach, fantastic sunset.

August 2023

Great place for an evening drink - beach not very suitable for children .

August 2023

We stayed for a week in a house opposite the beach in Beesands. The beach is a pebble beach and is very quiet. There is no lifeguard but there are locals there everyday with their boats so I am sure they would let you know if the conditions were unsafe. There is a fish and chip shop/restaurant and 1 pub restaurant - both serving lovely food and offer very friendly service. There is very little nearby so you do need a car to get around. Nearest supermarket was around 20-30 minute car ride away. The kids went in the sea almost every day and had the best time! They wore full wetsuits and water shoes which I thoroughly recommend as it is a pebble beach, and the kids got stung by a jelly fish when they paddled without wetsuits. When the tide was in, or coming in, the kids felt safer as they were in their depth. When the tide is out, there is a ledge which drops quite sharply. I am not a fan of sand so sitting on my camping chair on the pebble beach was bliss for me. We even spotted seals on most days! The locals with their boats didn't seem too friendly but we loved watching them take their boats out and bring them back in again. It was fascinating. I would have loved to ask them more about the beach, tides and coastal erosion but they didn't seem very approachable. However, I do appreciate that they must find tourists a little irritating. I would absolutely go back to Beesands for a holiday. It is my idea of blissful relaxation.

August 2023

Friendly, quiet location and shingle beach. Nice beach walk to Torcross at low tide. Pub/restaurant and Britannia restaurant and takeaway were very good. Very narrow roads to Beesands from turning off main road, but enjoyable holiday

June 2023

Just lovely. Excellent food at Britannia on the beach and they also have an excellent takeaway

Pleasant place to visit

July 2022

Absolute delight to stay in this quiet little seaside village! Mostly holiday let properties nowadays but still some locals around to talk to about the history of the area. The village is extremely clean including the beach considering it is all dog friendly! Popular with local & travelling anglers mainly at weekends I also fished to some degree every day of our stay. We will be going back soon!

July 2022

Had a lovely walk. Beautiful setting.

June 2022

lovely location, enjoyed many morning walks along the beach, and caught 14 mackerel. The road access is not the best, drive slowly, you cannot do anything else, and hey who's in a rush on holiday

May 2022

Loved Beesands, we stayed in one of the cottages for a week and enjoyed the peace and quiet and strolling along the beach, very dog friendly to!

May 2022

Gorgeous stretch of beach - we loved finding pebbles to take home! The walks to Torcross and Hallsands and an absolute must for stunning views

October 2021

Lovely clean dog-friendly beach and an easy walk from Clover Cottage and over to Torcross too

September 2021

Lovely quiet and dog friendly beach with good facilities. Good place to walk from to nearby beaches.

July 2021

The actual usable beach is a fair walk from the village ( parking not allowed as the beach fronting the village no longer exists due to flood defences

June 2021

much less busy than most local beaches (because it is shingle) but great for kids above toddler age. lovely walks in both directions, eg to Torcross for chips or to Start Point for views. Easy parking and a good beach shack cafe and take away

June 2021

14 Beesands is a great property. About 10 feet away from the beach/ sea wall. Pub 20 paces away. Lovely walks on the doorstep. Fabulous sunsets and seals swimming past. Who could ask for more. Well equipped cottage, very comfy beds cosy and warm

October 2020

The most wonderful little fishing village- narrow lanes on approach so drive carefully- but it's worth it. Lovely shingle beach and stunning views across Start Bay. Two great eateries- Britannia and The Cricket Inn are worth a visit. Beesands is just beautiful, I love it there.

September 2020

Amazing location right on the beach. We spent a week in Beesands and found the property to be perfect for our big group - plenty of space for everyone to relax and a very well appointed kitchen. Would highly recommend.

September 2020

Beautiful setting and lovely property decorated to a high standard, well equipped and perfect place for a getaway to peace and quiet. Short distance to the beach. Would definitely return. We had a super weekend at this property celebrating a family birthday

January 2020

Beautiful relaxing place to spend time.

November 2019

Lovely little beach, nice quiet location and free parking a bonus

August 2019

Worth the uphill/downhill walk along the coast path. Lovely spot.

August 2019

Easy to park, good food options. plenty of room for everyone.

August 2019

I love Beesands . The only sad thing is even more people have found out about it, 10 years since my last visit. Sadly the sea has removed the road handy for parking and is gradually eroding the cliff edges. Not as quiet as it used to be but the attractions of two nice eating places have probably increased the footfall.

June 2019

It’s a new look on the outside but the food very much of the same high quality at the Britannia in Beesands. The new ‘shack’ doesn’t really do it justice with a completely renovated contemporary dining room in keeping with the seaside location and beach hut vibe with excellent views of the bay. There seems to be loads more space too and the higher ceiling gives light to the treats being served from the kitchen. Dave and the team in the kitchen maintain their high standards of food preparation and making dishes that look and taste fantastic, the front of house team are equally as attentive making a great relaxed dining experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Britannia so come back if you have been before and see the changes or give it a go if you never have been. ????????

June 2019

I've been coming to Beesands since I was 2 years old (61 now!). Not every year since adulthood but still can't stay away. Its an ideal location for those who want to get away from it all. Its close enough to Kingsbridge and within easy reach of Dartmouth , Salcombe and Brixham. The locals are very friendly and will always be up for a chat. Its almost tempting to keep this little coastal secret to myself!

October 2018

Bit scary driving down to the beach due to the narrow road but worth it when you got there. Had fish and chips and ate them on the tables that were provided while looking out to sea.

September 2018

Had a wonderful meal in the beach cafe .

July 2018

We've been coming to this general area for over 20 years now and have stayed in many of the surrounding villages . This was the first time we'd stayed in Beesands - but we had walked through it on our coastal walks on many, many occasions. We both loved the peaceful charm of the place - secluded , tranquil and away from it all . But unlike Hallsands (next village along) , it does have two places where you can eat ( The cricket Inn and the Britannia0)and they are both very good . The beach is great - shingle - but really uncrowded in June . ( We were lucky with the weather) and on a clear, sunny day - it is quite magical. ( What a shame the water is so freezing cold !!) This stretch of coastline is stunning - and even if you do no other walks - walk over to Hallsands and read about the old village that was washed away in January 1917 - or just drink in the stunning views . I love this part of Devon and it never fails to take my breath away when you stand on the coast path near the lighthouse and look back across Start Bay to Hallsands , Beesands , Torr Cross , and over towards Dartmouth. Wonderful.

June 2018

Beautiful stoney beach with views of Start Point Lighthouse. Tasty fish and chips available, popular pub and public toilets.

June 2018

Lovely place, good food and very dog friendly :-)

March 2018

Britannia Fish - Great fish - always fresh and lovely family run business. A must for anyone who likes eating good fish!

North Hallsands
North Hallsands
(3 miles)

(7)

A quiet beach of fine shingle with a reed bed providing the backdrop, North Hallsands is a picturesque place to visit for anyone staying in one of our holiday cottages in Devon. The beach is divided into north and south, and it’s about nine miles from Kingsbridge facing towards Start Bay. There is level access to the sand from North Hallsands car park, although it is small so keep that in mind in busier months, although there’s also another small car park five minutes away for South Hallsands. You might want to note that there aren’t any facilities or toilets close to the beach, which does mean that it’s fantastically peaceful and an experience that’s all about the natural environment, which ultimately is what we all love about a Devon break! For those bringing their four legged friends with them, the beach is completely dog friendly, welcoming them all year round, so just don’t get carried away with all that fun in the sand and get cut off by the tide in all the excitement. The sand stretches a fair distance at low tide and we wouldn’t want you to get wet!

June 2023

lovely beach, I walked through there twice on my way along the coast path, really peaceful, the lost fishermans village is also worth visiting just a short walk from the beach

May 2022

Great walk up to Hallsands, interesting piece of history.

April 2022

Lovely little place, great to take a picnic as no facilities but that's part of its charm. Wonderful views of Start Bay and a great base to walk to Start Point and beyond or to Beesands. Well worth a visit.

September 2020

Gorgeous beach, but be careful if you have a dog that likes to run as our Border Collie got very sore paws on the pebbles.

Lannacombe Beach
Lannacombe Beach
(3 miles)

(13)

Rugged and unspoiled, Lannacombe is the beach for those looking for total escapism on their South West holiday. Small and perfect for escaping from the summer crowds, it’s one of the best places to visit to simply enjoy the Devon scenery in all its natural glory. There’s a small car park just behind the beach so do get there early in order to guarantee a space, although there is further parking a short walk away if need be. Dogs are welcome at the beach throughout the year and as it offers access to the Coast Path it’s a good idea to combine your visit with a walk to take in the views of sea and countryside, perhaps towards Start Point where there is further parking around 30-40 minutes away on foot. At low tide the beach offers gentle rock pooling so it’s a lovely spot to head to for a quiet afternoon with the family, building sandcastles and eating sandwiches if you remember to bring them. There aren’t any cafes and restaurants immediately on site, so do remember to take anything you need with you, and there aren’t any toilets in the near vicinity either, so that’s worth keeping in mind when you plan your day. If you have been on holidays in Devon and Cornwall before you will also know that you need to watch our for the tide at many of the beaches, including this one in order to avoid disappointment or getting wet, you can pick up a tide timetable at local post offices!

Lovely walk along the coast from Horizons. Beautiful sandy beach

April 2024

Lannacombe is a lovely beach! The beach is gentle and slopes nicely into the sea. We swam in October and it was beautiful. If you haven’t been there are no facilities and only parking for about 8-9 cars so get there early in peak season. It’s on the SW Coast path and we have walked from East Prawle though takes a while. Fabulous beach. Keep it to yourself!

October 2023

Best beach in the area, spent a lovely sunny day here.

September 2023

A favourite beach of us, we spent another lovely afternoon there, superb view and great for rock pooling.

April 2022

Fantastic beach! Secluded and beautiful. Windy narrow lanes to reach it but worth it. We were able to get a car space in the small car park which was great. Our dog loved it and so did we!

October 2021

Best beach in the world! Dont tell anyone or else we will never get one of the 8 parking spaces!

September 2021

Unspoilt and away from the crowds. Perfect secret

August 2021

Beautiful unspoilt beach.

July 2021

We walked here from East Prawle, it was a delightful find and we explored the beach whilst en route along the coastal path. I imagine it would be extremely busy in high season but we were the only ones there so felt very lucky to have found it.

June 2021

Lovely but inaccessible down rough extremely narrow lane with very tiny parking & limited turning , best to walk from Start Point car park

October 2020

Very limited parking (but we got lucky!). Wide, spacious but covered in dense seaweed - what's happened? It never used to be so weedy.

August 2019

Excellent secluded beach once you find it. Signs would be helpful but this would be detrimental as visitors would "flood" the small car park. Well worth visiting and walking along the stunning cliff walks

September 2018

A lovely beach where we enjoy sitting and eating our sandwiches after walking from Start Point.

May 2018

Slapton Sands
Slapton Sands
(3 miles)

(29)

A long stretch of beach with spectacular views of the sea stretching into the distance, Slapton Sands is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for good reason. Adjacent to Slapton Ley, a freshwater lake that’s home to an abundance of wildlife and one of the many reasons people come to visit the area, the beach has a history of welcoming families in the summer for long days in the sunshine, building sandcastles, surfing, windsurfing and kayaking. It’s amazing to believe that this peaceful corner of South Devon has its place in military history as in 1943 the beach was taken over by allied forces to use as a rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. However, live ammunition and poor visibility ended in the deaths of more than 700 servicemen, so today there is a stone monument in place for Operation Tiger, as it was called, as well as a Sherman Tank at nearby Torcross. On a more current note, there is a beachside café at Slapton Sands for teas, coffees and other light bites, and there are also toilets nearby. The beach has disabled access, and also allows dogs throughout the year, so it really is fun for everyone and very easy to get to. There is parking nearby and in the summer months from May to September there is lifeguard cover. Last, but not least, a small collection of pubs reside in Torcross for those who are feeling peckish after a long day in the fresh air, or if you have been for a nice walk along the sand!

Our dog loved this beach and the kiosk cafe was a great addition, especially as it was very cold and windy. Shame about the parking costs.

April 2024

Fab stretch of beach - quite a trek from one end to another, you’ll need a drink from the coffee van at Pilchard Cove or cafes in Torcross! Over the hill from Torcross to bee sands has an amazing view

August 2023

A stunning coastline well worth a visit. If you drive along the coast road from Dartmouth the views are incredible. Slapton Sands is a shingle beach and dog friendly. If the first car park is busy continue further on and the next one is usually quieter, payment required.

July 2023

Visited here out of respect for those who practiced the D-Day landings on this beach. If venturing doen to the sea from the car park please note it was hard getting back up as you sink into the stones, so not so good for those with any mobility issues.

July 2023

November 2021

September 2021

We visited on a very overcast day with a keen wind blowing, so we did not see the sands at their best. We walked into Slapton and had tea in the church and found a pleasant footpath back to the beach car park, which ran past the nature reserve at Slapton Ley.

September 2021

A beautiful, gentle walk along the side of the nature reserve, if you make it to the turn off to go into Slapton, there is a lovely pub up there, the Queens Arms great gardens, food and friendly staff.

September 2021

Absolutely stunning stretch of beach (non-sandy which we prefer) with miles of space. Beautiful for early morning dog walks with a coffee at the end from the 'cafe on the beach' at Strete Gate picnic area.

May 2021

Walked along the beach and round the Nature reserve whilst staying in Slapton village. Lovely long shingle beach - our dog loved it. Lovely circular walk through the medieval village and back through the Nature reserve and along the beach.

February 2020

If you love the sound of the waves on pebbles this has to be one of the best beaches in the world !

April 2019

Really interesting area and good walks along the coast and by the Ley. Generous provision of toilets and parking and a number of places to eat. Would particularly recommend The Start Bay Inn, The Boathouse and Seabreeze Cafe at Torcross. Also very handy that there is a bus should you want to walk one way and get a bus back. Very beautiful and peaceful.

October 2017

Beautiful beach right across from our Cottage

September 2017

Wonderful nature reserve with well signposted walks.

September 2017

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach - dogs allowed all year. Not many facilities - we went to the Strete end of the beach as there is a great little coffee hut there - great coffee and friendly staff.

September 2017

Clapton Sands is beautiful. The rocks are the most beautiful colours, wild flowers abound on the beach, the views in either direction are stunning and it is rarely over crowded. One of the most wonderful areas in the U.K.

May 2017

Great place for a walk along the beach and had some great events for children at Easter. Great fish and chips in the pub at the end on Torcross

Mill Bay
(4 miles)

(29)

A sandy beach on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary, at low tide Mill Bay stretches all the way up the coastline to East Portlemouth beach. It has the most wonderful view of Salcombe itself and is popular with everyone, especially families, because of the large swathes of sand on which you can set up camp for the day and enjoy safe, clean swimming conditions. Parking is limited, so the best way to get to it is either by boat or by catching the East Portlemouth Ferry from Salcombe and strolling along. That way you can also nip past The Venus Café by the slipway to pick ice creams, sandwiches and refreshments before settling in for the day. There are rock pools to explore, sandcastles to build and swimming to be done, just make sure you’re careful of any boats coming in and out of the beach. Dogs are welcome at Mill Bay all year round, and it makes an excellent spot to run around with them whatever time of the year. Like the other beaches along this stretch of coast, Mill Bay makes for an ideal place to spend the day right into the evening, although it is a little stroll to the nearest facilities. It’s also a lovely beach to meander across en route towards Gara Rock or on a longer walk along the coast path.

June 2022

Brilliant beach 3 miles from the cottage

June 2022

Gorgeous little Bay close to where we were staying our dog. Loved fetching his ball in and out the water. Very pretty spot.

April 2022

Lovely beach and you can walk to Gara rock from here and along beach to the ferry crossing to salcombe

March 2022

Great beach. Bumpy access road as sand has blown across it. Slightly marred by 1-2 selfish dog owners who have left their calling cards

November 2021

We were lucky enough to spend 3 days on this beautiful beach. Fabulous place ??

September 2021

Fantastic beach one of the best in the area. Have to get to car park (National Trust) very early if you don't want to carry all your stuff to the beach.

September 2021

We attempted to drive to Mill Bay car park- not a good idea in August! No parking spaces, no turning points. We tried another day, parking at Gara Rock and asking down the bridle path. We have a disabled granddaughter, the walk down was manageable but the return walk was much more difficult. Beautiful beach and worth the walk.

September 2021

Lovely, clean, sandy beach in wonderful location with beautiful views and easy access from Salcombe via the East Portlemouth ferry.

August 2021

Lovely beach, clear water

July 2021

Lovely beach for children to play on.

June 2021

Favourite beach going back to my childhood. The road to it was closed due to a land slip in January. Talked to the workmen who said it was due to reopen November 2020.

October 2020

Lovely beach but this year overrun with people arriving by motor boat- so it felt a little worrying for kids to swim out among them,(and frankly it spoilt the view) and engine noise/fumes at the end of the day as everyone left!

September 2020

Wonderful

September 2019

I endorse all of the other favourable comments and emphasise the urgent need to make the lavatories hygienic. In fact all of the public conveniences are anything but convenient.

September 2019

Lovely beach, handy to have little food caravan selling crepes, drinks and ice cream, good quality too. The toilets were disgusting though and should have been cleaned more regularly, also waste bins overflowing.

August 2019

Great place for a day on the beach. Safe and dog friendly

August 2019

Lovely large sandy beach, perfect for young children who want to play in the strem and build dams, or play in the sea without large waves!

July 2019

Great beach

October 2018

A fabulous beach. Especially great fun at low tide for a water loving Labrador. We enjoyed our visits here. We also loved the passenger ferry from here to Salcombe. Beautiful beach.

October 2018

Beautiful beach lovely and clean. Small car park free to N.T. members. Highly recommended. Drawback no immediate café available. Venus café nearest but a trek if not mobile.

September 2018

Lovely beach well worth a visit. Dog friendly as well. Well worth the £7-50 national trust car parking fee.

July 2018

amazing beach, dog friendly, only downside is the toilets near the National Trust hut are very poor

September 2023

Lovely cottage in a lovely quiet location with the added benefit of good parking across the road with a garden. However some of the roads are just a bit to narrow for us to use on a daily basis but overall we had a great holiday.

November 2022

A very enjoyable stay in a lovely cottage. Being autumn we enjoyed sundowners in the garden/summerhouse and evenings in front of the woodburner. Very peaceful location.

November 2022

Yes we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to come back. Will definitely recommend to other family members. Beautiful quiet location. Have only marked it down as i know some visitors may not enjoy driving the narrow lanes and it’s difficult to walk very far that doesn’t involve hills. However we know the area well and enjoyed the peace and quiet and darkness at night. Lovely break in a beautiful cottage thank you

September 2022

All round excellent holiday. Cottage in relaxing countryside environment. Great place from which to tour South Hams area.

Have had a great few days here. Easy reach of the coast. The Golden hind pub is really friendly. Great food and dog friendly too. We took the tram from Colyton to Seaton - great views across the wetlands, so many birds. Walked from Branscombe to Beer along the cliffs - got our hearts racing!. Also did a fabulous walk (from your booklet) round Musbury - fabulous views!. Thank you for a lovely stay!

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Lilac Cottage.

July 2020

What a beautiful cottage, furnished with impeccable taste. We always had plenty of hot water, powerful showers, and a really comfortable bed and every possible piece of kitchen equipment we could need. Thankyou.

July 2020

All good - but surprised that some of the info on pubs etc was out of date (I don't mean re: covid opening) but The Millbrook & Frogmore bakery closed last year.

Thank you for letting us know there is still incorrect information regarding Frogmore Bakery, The Millbrook closed due to Covid and is due to reopen any day. We do hope to see you back soon to check it out!

October 2019

This is a lovely cottage.Clean and decorated to a high standard throughout.Narrow roads in the area could possibly be a problem during busy times of the year but this would not stop me from booking this cottage again.I can recommend the Church House Inn at Stokenham and Cricketers Inn at Beesand for meals.

October 2019

A wonderful cottage in a very quiet and hidden area of Devon. The standard of decor was superb, a real gem.

June 2019

Impeccable.

May 2019

We were very impressed by the cottage, it has excellent facilities and is well presented and clean. Possibly the best cottage we have rented!

April 2019

A wonderfully quiet break! Most of the time the only sounds were those of birds. Would definitely like to return.

November 2018

We were very impressed by the exceptionally high standards of this cottage. It is perfect for a family or two couples and had everything we needed. Perfectly placed for exploring the surrounding countryside and coast. Start Point is a short drive away and shouldn't be missed, and the Millbrook Inn in South Pool is a lovely walk away along a green lane.

September 2018

Amazing holiday, cottage was perfect and had everything you could need. Thank you

September 2018

Great location & beautiful cottage with gorgeous interior design & decoration. A real home from home with comfortable beds & lovely linen, spotlessly clean. The welcome wine, milk & delicious flapjack was really appreciated. Thank you.

September 2018

We have had the most wonderful relaxing holiday. The cottage is absolutely perfect. Clean, well equipped and very comfortable. Lots to do in this beautiful area. We would love to come back.

September 2018

With wall to wall sunshine, drives' around the countryside and coast together with locally caught fish meals has made our stay here at this delightfully well equipped cottage a memorable one. Our walk to South Pool along the old road enjoying the abundance of wild flowers to the pub was a highlight. The evening G & Ts in the summer house watching the swallows dip and dive was very special.

September 2018

Lovely cottage. Walks to Millbrook Inn along a peaceful road with plenty of wildlife. Visited beaches, hired a little boat for the day.

Second visit to the South Hams area. First visit to Lilac Cottage and another fantastic holiday. A very well appointed cottage in a beautiful part of the country. Would definitely come back.

May 2018

Very good holiday

May 2018

This was a perfect setting for country lovers and within easy reach of wonderful coastal walks. The cottage was first class.

April 2018

Lilac Cottage was the wonderful Devon hideaway we had hoped for. The cottage had everything we needed and was beautifully presented. It is located in a sleepy Hamlet within easy reach of all South Devon has to offer.

September 2017

a lovely cottage- thank you

October 2014

A real quiet place. The Cottage was lovely. Clean and warm. Has a lovely Garden, our children loved it. Only the entrance for parking with a bigger car (we had a Citroen C8) could be a small problem for the first one or two times. When you looking for a peaceful place, you will be right there. But the next Town is about 15 - 20 Minutes by car. Bernd from Austria

September 2014

Lilac Cottage is the perfect place to get away from it all while still being close enough to enjoy the fabulous beaches and towns of the a South Hams. Local pub: Millbrook Inn serves superb food and we also visited the Oyster Shack, Crabshell Inn and Gara Rock. A culinary delight around every corner! Can't wait to come back soon.
