Steeped in maritime history, Dartmouth lies at the mouth of the majestic River Dart. This bustling waterfront town is overlooked by the famous and somewhat imposing Britannia Royal Naval College, just one hint at the town’s historic and strategic importance. Look around and you’ll notice old fortifications on both sides of the river. Bayards Cove Fort, dating from Tudor times is easy to access just a short stroll from the shops, or you can take the passenger ferry up to Dartmouth Castle, which has guarded the narrow entrance to the port for over 600 years, and then walk along the stunning South West Coast Path towards Stoke Fleming and Strete.

Central to Dartmouth is the “boat float”. From here, take time to explore the picturesque network of streets and alleys with their abundance of independent shops, cafés and restaurants. For art lovers, there are numerous galleries and you may even spot the famous artist, Simon Drew, at work. For a hearty brunch, see if you can squeeze onto a shared table in the bustling Café Alf Resco or for a more continental feel, sample the delights of Saveurs French bakery.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a total novice, a simple must for every visitor is to take to the water. Sailing, kayaking or hopping on a passenger ferry to nearby Totnes, Dittisham or Greenway (once a home of Agatha Christie) will allow you to enjoy this truly idyllic stretch of river. Keep an eye out for wildlife on the way as you may be lucky enough to be accompanied by a friendly seal!

If you’re looking for a day out on the beach, drive along the truly breathtaking coast road to nearby Blackpool Sands (no dogs in high season) and on to Torcross at Slapton Sands, a three and a half mile stretch of beach with a neighbouring freshwater nature reserve, Slapton Ley, which is a haven for bird watchers.

From Dartmouth, you can cross the water to neighbouring Kingswear to walk the Dart Valley Trail towards Greenway, catch the steam railway or take the higher car ferry across for a family day out at Paignton Zoo or Torquay's Living Coasts.

Dartmouth itself literally heaves at the seams during Dartmouth Regatta in late August, but there is also plenty to keep you entertained throughout the rest of the year. And if you prefer simple pleasures, the embankment provides the perfect spot for crabbing. All you need is a bucket, line, net and some bait and it won’t be long before you hear squeals of delight from the whole family!

Picturesque Dartmouth is the ideal holiday cottage location for couples or families looking to enjoy all this lovely coastal town has to offer as soon as they walk out their front door.

The property has two private off-street parking spaces. One space is situated in a garage signed Halcyon to the rear of the property whilst the second space is next to the garage and signed The Holt. Please note the second space may not be suitable for some larger cars with approximate measurements being 5700mm x 1850mm at its shortest and narrowest.

  • Included: High quality bed linen and towels (guests are required to provide their own beach/dog towels). Water, Gas and Electricity.
  • Internet and Telephone: Wi-Fi available free of charge. No landline telephone available. Mobile reception generally good but please check with your provider prior to booking.
  • Pets: Up to two well behaved dogs welcome. Dog charge £30.00 per dog per week.
  • Local Facilities: Shops, pubs, restaurants and the river embankment just over a 10 minute stroll. Beach at Blackpool Sands 3 miles. Dartmouth Golf and Country Club 4 miles.

Lovely place, food delicious, service excellent, the staff were lovely, hardworking, professional but also so friendly. We went twice, cream tea, one of the best we've ever had and an evening meal, loved every mouthful.

May 2023

Very friendly and helpful staff, great coffee and would recommend.

August 2022

great cream teas - scones are huge, one tea is plenty for 2 people. Love the tables in the bay windows.

October 2021

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. The food was delicious and the service was very professional.

August 2021

Really liked this place, as it opens at 8.00am (unusual for Dartmouth) and provides an excellent coffee and croissant, or coffee and cake, (alongside their full breakfast menu, not sampled). Very relaxing for a slow start of a morning, reading the papers.

May 2021

Excellent, well worth the wait for here! Book in advance to get in! Food top notch and great service! Go!!!!

September 2020

This is our regular haunt when we holiday in Dartmouth. Warm welcome, lovely coffee, scones and snacks. Have also met some interesting customers.

Ideally located castle cafe after a walk from town. Small snacks and drinks available. It is sad that there are no china pots of tea any more which used to be served to the outside tables. Just cardboard take away cups left on the serving area for you to retrieve and add your own milk etc. The cafe lost its charm but still satisfies a thirst after a walk!

April 2024

Lovely little cafe and perfect place to enjoy a hot chocolate after an early morning swim. Lovely staff

October 2023

Perfect after boat trip to castle and prior to visiting the castle - good pork pies and cakes

July 2023

Ideal for a coffee before/after (or both) a walk along the Coast Path. Lovely!

August 2022

Normally walk up to here for coffee and cake last time it was mid lockdown but now its open fully with a great menu lovely place with amazing views right by the Castle

May 2022

Lovely cappuccino sitting outside in the sunshine, great location.

March 2022

A cute cafe with lots of outdoor seating in a lovely setting, and some undercover seating just to hand when it rains. Plus toilets too, useful if you've walked the very pleasant mile and a half along from Dartmouth. Easy steps down into a little sheltered cove by the Castle, which has a lovely out of the way feel to it, or steps up to the Coast Path, or NT protected Gallants Bower (beautiful flowers in May!). Cafe does great coffee and snacks and is open every day. Visited 3 times in rain and shine...always good.

May 2021

Had lovely tea cake and hot chocolate. COVID restrictions in place and well organised, slick service

May 2021

It’s a lovely walk from the center of Dartmouth out to the Castle. Topped of with a great coffee and a slice of homemade lemon drizzle cake. Thoroughly recommended.

For 30 years this Dartmouth gem has been serving tasty breakfasts and light lunches and in all those years it has maintained its standards which are high. If you are looking for ambiance and quirkiness don’t miss it. Eat in or out on the covered seating area.

April 2024

Feel this is a bit like the Emperor's new clothes. We only had a coffee, which was OK. Price of food expensive (£13.50 for breakfast). One of those places where it's probably "hip" to be seen in and to say you went there!

September 2023

Had a lovely breakfast here and again freindly staff and Dog welcomed.

July 2023

Great food and even better coffee

October 2022

Best breakfast in town - but get there early if you don't want to queue. Best way to spend a morning would be an early morning swim at Sugary Cove followed by breakfast at Alf's - perfect.

August 2022

Delicious breakfast as always. Great atmosphere. Thanks!

April 2022

Fantastic lunch in really quirky and characterful surroundings. We loved the marmalade tasting.

March 2022

Had two lovely breakfasts, whilst recently staying in Dartmouth. Lovely obliging staff and would definitely recommend.

June 2021

The very best place to relax and enjoy breakfast, coffee or elevenses. A melting pot of locals, traders, fisherman and visitors

March 2021

Went for breakfast and it was fantastic

September 2019

Delicious breakfast and great service.

August 2019

great food and drinks

July 2019

We had to wait for half an hour for a table for 8 as the cafe was full when we arrived and joined the queue at 10am. Tables for 2 were available quite quickly though. The customer collects drinks at the servery where the food is ordered and paid for. A good system as the waiters do not have to deal with money, cards etc and the customer does not have to wait for a bill. There was a good range of food on the menu. A pile of toast was delivered to the table while we waited for our food to arrive. Alf's breakfast was delicious and the cheese and ham toastie filled the plate. Service was very quick considering how busy it was. I would advise booking although bookings are not accepted for the same day. Next time we will know!

June 2019

love this place. Quirky, vibrant and a great breakfast. Highly recommend it

July 2018

Unable to get a table on Sunday morning so returned during the week. Had Alf’s breakfast which was delicious.

Had an excellent dinner with friends, whilst the small plates are 'small', they are full of flavour! We didn't seem to eat much, but we certainly didn't feel hungry after we'd finished. Well worth the money and the experience.

March 2023

Enjoyed a fantastic lunch here during September. The staff were really friendly and helpful, explaining all the daily specials of locally landed fresh fish and seafood. Our group shared a handful of starters and all chose from the daily specials. Especially loved the dressed crab - super fresh, and so much food!

September 2022

We had an amazing lunch upstairs at Rockfish in Dartmouth which is a lovely light and airy space - was expecting just fish and chips but there's so much more. We had a feast of dressed crab, calamari and a delicious whole grilled brill all with some spot on side dishes. Staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful, well worth a visit.

Great little castle. Enjoy the tour around.

April 2022

We took the ferry Dartmouth to Dartmouth Castle with our 7 and 9 year old children and had the most stunning views of Dartmouth. The castle was very interesting and the children enjoyed it too. Again, stunning views over Dartmouth from the castle. A really fun and educational day out. The castle is expensive but we felt it was worth it.

November 2021

Well worth a visit. We walked there and took the ferry back. Best of both worlds!

Blackpool Sands
Blackpool Sands
(3 miles)

(35)

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

June 2023

Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.

May 2023

we love this beach always clean good parking clean facilities and good cafe.

September 2022

We did go to this beach, couldn’t go in the sea as it was so rough, was beautiful though. No sand, but still very nice.

September 2022

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

September 2022

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

August 2022

A lovely beach, stunning veiw as you drive down towards it. Very clean with clear water.

Lovely sandy beach. Parked here (£2) whilst doing a circular walk and then returned for a walk along the beach.

November 2020

Dogs allowed on beach out of season, a bracing walk with coffee and millionaire shortbread at the cafe to finish.

October 2020

Great beach really beautiful , even in the rain, as the Venus café is right on the beach and is warm, dry and serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices.

October 2019

One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.

October 2019

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach nestled between steep hills at either end. Excellent facilities including one of the best beach cafes we've ever visited.

September 2019

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

September 2019

Parking charge between £3 - £8 depending on time of year, Also food good but e.g. Hawaiian Prawns (£9) consisted of 5 prawns. Not good value for money.

October 2018

Lovely beach, not sandy but the stones are okay. Good food, beverages, coast guards, Nice view and not so cowded

August 2018

Lovely clean beach in super location along coastal road. Great place to visit.

May 2018

Beautiful clean beach with excellent facilities.Clean toilets lovely cafe and shop.Lifeguard on the beach. No dogs allowed.Plenty of parking. We enjoyed rock pooling at the far end of the beach. The owner does a great job.You can also visit Blackpool Sands garden but we did not have time. Also a juggler was there on the day we went great fun for everyone.

August 2017

Beautiful location but shame it a shingle beach and not sandy. Also very disappointed with the £8 fee to park the car .

August 2017

St Mary's Bay
(5 miles)

The decent to St Mary’s Bay is one of the best views in Brixham, with panoramic views of the English Riviera. This beautiful, unspoilt beach has a carpark nearby, but we recommend walking there to make the most of the stunning surroundings. The sandy and shingle beach is sheltered by steep cliffs on either side, which means the decent to the beach isn’t easy, especially for those with mobility disabilities. There are no facilities at the beach, but visitors can take the coast path north to Berry Head Nature Reserve, where there is a great café and toilets, as well as stunning coastal views. Dogs are welcome all year, making St Mary’s Bay a great place to take a well-earned rest on your dog walk.

Elberry Cove
(5 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Broadsands Beach
(5 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Churston Cove
(5 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Thanks for having us :)

September 2023

Oh wow what a fabulous week! The house is just stunning. Beautifully and tastefully restored, with an amazing kitchen with superb selection of utensils and gadgets, not that we ate in much. Perfect spot for exploring Dartmouths restaurants and shops. The weather was spot on too. Was glorious sitting on the terrace with my rose and in awe of those spectacular views

April 2023

We had a very enjoyable week and the house was superb. Only thing we felt could be improved was the kitchen equipment. There was no lemon squeezer, electric whisk, rolling pin ,potato masher was plastic and not user friendly. All very minor things.

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to leave some feedback, we're really glad to hear you had a very enjoyable week and thought the house was superb. Whilst the property is obviously well-equipped, we have passed your comments on regarding the kitchen items and will continue to monitor the equipment throughout the whole house. We look forward to hopefully welcoming you again. Best wishes, The Toad Hall Team.

July 2022

We visit Dartmouth every year - this house is brilliantly located but the cleanliness in terms of very cobwebby side entrance door, all pot plants dead and bobbly bed sheets just take the edge of this property. Plus noisy guests, maintenance issues and roadworks did present some challenges. Little more attention and this property will be super .

Thank you very much for the feedback, we're pleased to hear you thought the house is brilliantly located and just short of super! We are, however, sorry you felt an area of the house was a little cobwebby and the garden could have been improved upon. We had not been made aware of this by other guests but have passed your comments on to the housekeeping team and can also confirm the property has a regular gardener in place so should always be looking great. Best wishes, The Toad Hall Team
