The village benefits from a couple of shops and a Post Office, two pubs, and a lovely old quay where children can go crabbing, There are also many peaceful strolls to be taken along the riverbank or through the apple orchard and winding village streets.

Stoke Gabriel lies equal distance from the historic maritime town of Dartmouth, the ancient market town of Totnes, and the English Riviera town of Paignton. For a beach day out you can choose between Brixham, Paignton or Torquay in one direction, or head towards the beautiful beaches at Blackpool Sands and Torcross in the other. Whilst if you would like to experience the rugged bleak wilderness of Dartmoor, it is less than half an hour's drive away.

A holiday cottage in Stoke Gabriel provides a picturesque spot to relax and unwind in the heart of the beautiful South Hams countryside.

There is on road parking available to the front of the cottage (available on a first come, first served basis, loading and unloading almost always possible as quiet cul-de-sac).  A parking permit is also provided for the Mill Pool Car Park (located approx. 280 metres from the cottage.

Fabulous locally sourced seasonal food, beautifully cooked and friendly staff - what's not to like? Currently (June 2022) dining-in is only available on Saturday evenings (6pm-8pm) and for Sunday lunch (2pm - 3:30pm) so early booking is advised! They do offer a take-away service Wednesday & Friday 5pm-8pm and for Sunday lunch 12pm - 2pm, and also have homemade dishes available for reheating at home. Great for when you want to eat at home but don't feel like cooking. Their latest menu and contact details can be found on their Facebook page.

We have eaten several times at Emma’s during previous visits to Stoke Gabriel prior to the Pandemic and were delighted to learn that Emma and John were offering a delivered takeaway service which we took full advantage of during our recent 2 week stay in the village. We enjoyed succulent Sunday Roasts together with many other dishes that were on offer. Excellent as always. We really were impressed that the food prepared by Emma and her Team and delivered by John directly to our holiday cottage was every bit as good as when we have eaten in the restaurant. Well Done and many thanks for helping to make our holiday so enjoyable and memorable.

Broadsands Beach
(3 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Elberry Cove
(4 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove
(5 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(5 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

August 2023

Breakwater Beach
(6 miles)

One of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, Breakwater beach is a Blue Flag, shingle beach right next to Brixham’s bustling harbour. With disabled ramps to the promenade and beach, as well as toilet facilities, adjoining parking and a café, this lovely, family-friendly beach is accessible for everyone. Hire out a deckchair and spend the day watching the kids splash about in the safe, clean water, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, learn to scuba dive! Breakwater beach is a great place to learn how to scuba dive, thanks to some of the warmest and calmest waters in the country. Whilst dogs are welcome out of season, there is a dog ban in place from May to September.

August 2023

We had a fabulous week. The house was lovely and we will definitely return. We had everything that we could possibly need and the dogs were so well catered for.

May 2023

A very nice property at the centre of the village with all the facilities needed (with the exception of the storage space for clothes noted above).

November 2022

Parking very difficult. Only managed to park in front of house once. A large rechargeable torch would be a real safety plus, as staying in November (dark at 5 pm)for increased visibility to cars while walking up and down the hill to the mill pool carpark in the dark.

May 2022

We had a lovely stay, the view from the terrace was amazing so perfect for sunny evening BBQs.

April 2022

We had a lovely time and the help and communication from the owner was second to none. The folders of information for everything in the house were detailed and very useful. The basket of welcome goodies was a lovely touch - excellent! This was a spacious family friendly property with a fabulous first floor deck with fairy lights overlooking the lovely millpond - we had daily fab morning views especially with such lovely weather. There were comfy beds and enough seating and space for all. And the power shower was great! The parking was a squeeze, and only for one car, but the season ticket for the nearby carpark was a good solution. It was a great location perfectly placed to walk down to the estuary and hire a canoe, paddleboard or just potter about or have a drink at the shack. But we were also lucky with the weather, and so beaches, moors and popular places were easily reached by car. A most enjoyable holiday, thank you.

March 2022

Loved the outdoor space

February 2022

We did enjoy our stay. The main issue was the parking as we were two families and there was never even one spot available. It is a shame neighbours took the spot directly outside the property every day.

September 2021

1 The Barnhay is an excellent spacious house to use as a base for South Devon. The house is large, comfortable and suited our family perfectly. We especially loved the terrace overlooking The Mill Pool and the well-stocked kitchen. The welcome basket containing wine and local cheese was a thoughtful surprise. We didn't miss home one bit! The house is tastefully and thoughtfully furnished, with nice touches including blankets for snuggling, an outdoor hose for rinsing off paddleboards, feet or paws plus a great selection of books and dvds for rainy days. We loved Stoke Gabriel and used the local shop (excellent), had meal at The River Shack, definitely book ahead for this, and also used Totnes Kayaks who were super friendly. We ventured a little further afield to Greenways, Brixham and had an excellent game of crazy golf at Torquay. We only wished we could have stayed for another week, there is simply loads to do and we will be back. Thank you for a fantastic holiday.

August 2021

What a fabulous house particularly given we had our 3 children and 2 of their friends with us. With 3 Double bedrooms and 2 Twin beds available, there was ample room and the space inside the house always made it feel like we were a smaller group. The terrace was great and 3 BQQs were well appreciated and eaten on the decking. Plenty to see and do with the River Shack fantastic for Bfast and Lunch (book ahead), Totnes Kayaks, The Church House, Paignton Waterpark, numerous beaches and Go Ape all visited easily in the week. A hugely relaxing holiday despite all the activities helped by how at home we felt in 1 The Barnhay. The standard of equipment, bedding, linen etc is second to none. Hugely comfy mattresses. We will be back next year for more of the same. Well done Toadhall and Co for making it seamless and easy at this busy time.

July 2021

Fantastic location and views from terrace. Lovely house for our family gathering. Not sure if very suitable if you had little ones due to main outdoor space upstairs. Excellent Welcome Pack. Luckily we had the parking permit as neighbours made sure we could never park outside the house! Not a problem though. Loved Stoke Gabriel and we had a great holiday.
