Holidays in Ashburton mean you have the many attractions and outstanding beauty of Dartmoor and South Devon all at your fingertips.  Sitting conveniently just off the A38 on the southern fringes of the moor, Ashburton dates back to Saxon times and in 1305 became a Dartmoor stannery town dictating tin production in the area.  This rich history is evident in the town’s architecture which is brimming with character and charm – antique shops, book stores, delis, restaurants and gift shops cram together along the pretty high street rubbing shoulders with a lively arts centre, museum and 12th century church.  For families there’s also a fantastic heated outdoor pool and skatepark within walking distance of the town centre.

Once you’ve explored the town there’s masses to do in the surrounding area, Ashburton is known as the ‘Gateway to Dartmoor’ and is the perfect base for walkers, runners, cyclists, canoeists and horse riders eager to get out and enjoy the wild expanses of the moor.  You don’t have to break a sweat to enjoy Dartmoor though, within a few miles of Ashburton there are plenty of beauty spots where you can pull up and have a picnic or let the kids run around.  Spitchwick Common is a popular spot for swimming in the Dart and magnificent Haytor are both just a few miles away.  Other attractions include River Dart Country Park, just outside Ashburton and a brilliant day out for all the family.  Here you can swing from the trees on the high ropes course, catch some air on a mountain bike, try canoeing, zorbing, zip lining and much more all in 90 acres of beautiful countryside alongside the River Dart.

With so much to see and do, holidays in Ashburton have something for everyone and our properties in this thriving market town provide the perfect base to explore the beautiful surrounding area.

There is parking for several cars to the front of the cottage.

Lovely place to visit and it is free to visit. Shame the lady in the ice cream shop was so rude and unpleasant!

Lovely setting and grounds. Were disappointed that we could not book any of the on-site activities for our 2 young people, park was quite quiet as well. Seemed as though school trips had taken all available slots. Which seemed unfair to other patrons having paid to go in.

July 2022

Fantastic park with lots of activities for the children. Some you do have to pay extra for but to be honest there is so much there it's not necessarily needed. On a sunny day take swimwear andxwater shoes for the water obstacle course and dampool. Lovely walks, streams, dipping pool and mini mountain bike tracks. Could be seen as a little pricey but as said lots to do and take a packed lunch for a fabulous day out

April 2022

fabulous place for kids and so well managed that adults can enjoy the natural surroundings too. We had a great day here and the entry price let's you go back an extra time within the week. So much fun to be had there - zorbs and high ropes and adventure playgrounds. We loved it.

Diane & Steve are so informative about the llamas & the moor, while maintaining a relaxed ambience & including everyone - very impressed. Malia, the suri llama, is a star & I'd love to spin that gorgeous fleece. Cake good too; highly recommend.

Buckfast Abbey
(3 miles)

(4)

People have been visiting this beautiful wooded valley on the River Dart for nearly 1000 years, drawn to Buckfast in search of God.  However, in 1882 that practice became a community when monks of the community of La Pierre-qui-vire in France relocated to the area to continue their monastic way of life when anti-clerical laws were enacted.  Today it continues to be a spiritual, peaceful and active working monastery, prizing its deep rooted Benedictine spirituality and its rich heritage.  You can visit the abbey for regular services and Mass, or simply browse, explore the gardens, visit the shop and have lunch in the Grange Restaurant.  There are seasonal events, the gardens are free to wander around all year, and there’s parking on site.

Broadsands Beach
(14 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Elberry Cove
(15 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove
(15 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(16 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

January 2024

The property is comfortable and ideal for a Christmas family break away from it all. Cannot recommend enough

January 2024

The Christmas stay at the Carriage House was quite magical. A wonderful house in an amazing setting. The owner is delightful, supportive but totally no introsive. A wonderful magical break

August 2023

A very enjoyable stay was had by all.

June 2023

Loose gravel drive was not pleasant to drive on, even at very low speeds and careful selection of the best path over the lumps and bumps Many thanks for the addition of a new washing machine instruction book, which I requested when I booked. My group thoughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was nicely presented, and certainly very comfortable. It is our second holiday here; there is still a lot to see.

May 2023

My second time here, it is a magical place of pure escapism and beauty. The owner is charming and couldn't be nicer, the location and setting is just fabulous.

April 2023

For the price, I doubt we'll be back.

September 2022

Still had a great stay thanks!

August 2022

yes, we had a lovely time.

June 2022

Enjoyed stay immensely as we have on numerous occasions before. Private garden and walks lovely. With a young family Pennywell Farm is a very good day out.

May 2022

Beds will need replacing as 2003 mattresses. Old Hotel furniture

October 2021

We did enjoy our break in Devon, but left the cottage somewhat disappointed and longing for our own beds.

October 2021

Not the best weather, however, the location allowed us to choose many different activities, indoors and out and we made the best use of a great week. There were six of us, all a bit long in the tooth, so the estate was perfect for gentle walks, and the moors for a little more effort.

August 2021

Yes very nice all the family enjoyed the stay

August 2021

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. The setting and tranquility are fantastic. The walks by the river made us realise our good fortune at having the picturesque setting in these difficult COVID times.

June 2021

We really enjoyed our stay. Pool/snooker table was great, and bedrooms very comfortable. it was nice to get a personal welcome from the owner, and the grounds are beautiful - we spotted foxes, deer and a woodpecker and missed plenty more no doubt! Kitchen is fine, but not very well designed and lacking some useful items. It would also be useful to have a few dishwasher tabs provided - many cottage operators are still doing this. And the hot water was hard to get to grips with, it did seem to run low after a couple of fairly short showers or a bath. As a result, we didn't have hot water in the kitchen when we wanted it quite often. Maybe not working quite as it should be.

June 2021

Lovely stay as usual, the extensive grounds and river walk are a joy.

May 2021

A magical place, comfortable roomy house, very well equipped in a glorious location. We will be back!

May 2021

A beautiful roomy house in a fantastic location. We thought it was magical and we will be back.

October 2020

Nothing you could want for a fantastic property and setting very homely would definitely return

September 2020

A stunning property and location - everything that we wanted and more. Lovely owners. Will absolutely return!

September 2020

Had a wonderful stay in this lovely house. Hope to return some day. Only one small criticism - whilst I understand that the cleaners require longer with all the additional cleaning required during the current situation, I do feel that having to check out at 9 a.m. and strip all the beds was a bit too much. Whilst we were quite happy to do the bedding, I think a later check out should have been allowed.

We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at The Carriage House. As you say, due to COVID-19, the checkout time has been amended to 9am for all of our properties with guests stripping their bedding at the end of their stay - thank you for adhering to these rules during this difficult times. We hope to welcome you back to The Carriage House again soon.

- The Toad Hall Team

September 2020

We loved our stay. The grounds and river are beautiful. The location is so quiet and the house is comfortable and clean. We loved the two separate seating areas. The pool table is a welcome addition and provided lots of fun. The house is warm and clean. We loved our holiday here.

August 2020

The situation is excellent with quietness in this very year with covid. The walks by the River Dart are wonderful.

August 2019

We all enjoyed our stay, it was so comfortable and spacious. The week went so fast, so when we return, it will be for longer.

August 2019

A brilliant property and one we would love to stay at again, and when you look at the cost of staying here it is only just the cost of two caravans. What a fabulous location!! We loved living "in the woods" and when the weather was bad we did not feel disappointed that we had to stay in. We would highly recommend this property.

August 2019

Pool table and river particular highlights

March 2019

We had an amazing time! Wonderful hosts, an incredible estate, totally friendly and relaxed and stunning views from the very comfortable beds. We would love to return. Thank you so much.
