Totnes is a small historic market town located on the River Dart in South Devon. A well-known centre for artists, painters, musicians and its twice-weekly market offering antiques, musical instruments, second-hand books, handmade clothing, and local produce. The town exudes a bohemian feel and boasts a wonderful selection of unique and independent shops, restaurants and delis offering a wealth of different produce to try.

The town is overlooked by Totnes Castle which was built in Norman times and is now run by English Heritage, the castle enjoys far-reaching views of the town as well as the surrounding Devonshire countryside.

With fantastic transport links, Totnes is on the main train line from Exeter to Plymouth and is easily accessible from London or the Midlands. The town is also home to the South Devon Railway, one of Devon’s best-loved tourist attractions, with a steam railway which runs through stunning countryside along the River Dart to the nearby town of Buckfastleigh.

Another 'alternative' way to get around is by the River Cruise which runs from Totnes to Dartmouth, taking in the pretty waterside village of Dittisham, and Agatha Christie's scenic estate at Greenway on its route. Dartmouth itself is a historic port town, and offers a great selection of shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants as well as excellent sailing in the sheltered harbour.

For a day trip with a difference, the nearby Sharpham Vineyard is a lovely place for a leisurely stroll and to enjoy locally produced wine and cheese. Alternatively, it's just over 10 minutes' drive to South Brent, a gateway to the bleak rugged wilderness of Dartmoor.

If you're visiting in December, Totnes is well known for its magical Christmas markets which extend throughout the town and serve as the perfect tonic for anyone struggling to get in the festive spirit. Most shops open late and the high-street becomes lined with food and craft stalls, making it a great chance to enjoy some street food and purchase a few special presents.

A holiday cottage in Totnes provides a lovely base for exploring the beautiful countryside along the River Dart in any season.

One parking permit for nearby car park (North Street car park) a couple of minutes’ walk away from the property. This permit is also valid in other Totnes car parks including: Old Market, Heath Way, Longmarsh, Steamer Quay and Pavillions Long Stay.

Good location and helpful staff, excellent for first night dinner. However, get busy so do need to book.

September 2023

Very convenient, as located across the road. Being on the High Street the prices were above average for both food and wine. Also a busy restaurant which is suitable for a cross section of tastes.

October 2020

I have just spent a great week in Totnes, however, although the cottage was well appointed, I could not get the induction hob to work, neither could google so had to resort to the microwave for a week. I found the mattress very hard on my old body!! Other than that, I would really like to return to the cottage in future, the people of Totnes are really friendly, shopping is great, recommend Aromatika and the Happy Apple. Pity the guildhall was closed! Next time hopefully, a topper on the mattress? and a hob? Thank you.

September 2019

Nice little restaurant, need to book. Service rather slow when we were there, it was an hour before starters arrived. Steak very over cooked. But we would return to give it another go.

January 2018

Had some tea here one night , apart from the slow beginning. The food was delicious and the staff were lovely.

November 2023

A little gem - no idea why we haven’t visited before.

September 2023

A great way to spend an hour, just off the high street. Interesting interpretation boards and a lovely little gift shop, the views are worth the climb to the top of the tower. Otherwise, not much to see - but a must if you’ve a day in Totnes.

September 2023

There are excellent views from the castle. A most enjoyable visit

August 2023

Fabulous example

OK, the view of Totnes from the top was good, but that was it. There is nothing else there to see or do.

The whole family found the Elizabethan house museum very interesting

August 2023

Unexpectedly hands-on. Loved seeing the barrel clock chime the remote bell by the front door via a cable. Did not expect to see the computing area on top floor with history of Charles Babbage and association with Totnes. We learnt many things, not least the origin of the wardrobe :-)

October 2019

An excellent museum in a special building, lots of local history and information, free entry was unexpected.

Broadsands Beach
(7 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Elberry Cove
(7 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove
(8 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(8 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

August 2023

Breakwater Beach
(9 miles)

One of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, Breakwater beach is a Blue Flag, shingle beach right next to Brixham’s bustling harbour. With disabled ramps to the promenade and beach, as well as toilet facilities, adjoining parking and a café, this lovely, family-friendly beach is accessible for everyone. Hire out a deckchair and spend the day watching the kids splash about in the safe, clean water, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, learn to scuba dive! Breakwater beach is a great place to learn how to scuba dive, thanks to some of the warmest and calmest waters in the country. Whilst dogs are welcome out of season, there is a dog ban in place from May to September.

October 2023

This is our third time staying at the Garden Annexe and it was as lovely as ever. The cottage is clean, light and tidy and very thoughtfully stocked with everything you could possibly need. We’ve never stayed anywhere else as nice.

September 2023

Worth mentioning the café cinema next door; very good.

August 2023

The location of the cottage was perfect walked out ot the property into the hart of the high Street with it's coffee shops restaurant's, and pubs. What I would like to say is that the lady from toad cottages when we locked our selves out by taking the wrong key's with us she was fantastic so helpful thank you . I would recommend toad cottages to anyone that's thinking of having a holiday

June 2023

We would have marked the cleanliness on arrival as excellent if the outside had been cleaned too.

March 2023

What a beautifully appointed cottage! We had a lovely stay. Enjoyed the sunshine and a brisk walk to Tuckenhay. Thank you.

March 2023

One of the best holiday rentals we have stayed in - in 30 years of doing this. Spacious, clean, well equipped and care has clearly been taken over it's decor. Rained a lot when we were here - cinema twice

October 2022

A very quiet property given its very central location on the High St. The fixtures and fittings were of a very high standard and though the weather prevented my using the garden, it looks a lovely quiet place to sit and enjoy. The property isn't overlooked so is private as well as quiet. Lots of great coffee hangouts, shops and cafes just steps away. Highly recommended.

September 2022

We had a wonderful time, it is the best cottage we have ever stayed in. Very well equipped with so many thoughtful items in the cupboards.

September 2022

October 2021

October 2021

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the 'Garden Annexe'. Great location & wonderfully equipped with everything one might need. Totnes is great! Thanks!

September 2021

A lovely quirky property and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Second time coming to the area and we will be back again! Thank you!

August 2021

Our second stay at this lovely property. We've thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the wonderful weather!

July 2021

Score for cleanliness is only because the previous clients left their rubbish in blue bags in the back porch. Probably because there wasn’t a gull bag. But the problem was solved very quickly by toad hall sending someone to collect it. The garden could just do with a little sweep to make it more presentable. However, the house is spic & span, Very comfortable, & well furnished. The lounge diner is huge & very bright. The kitchen is well kitted out. It’s a very quirky but extremely modern tastefully furnished property. The whole place is amazing & location is central. Thank you for our stay.

June 2021

A lovely retreat from the busy but inspiring 'Fore Street'. Great days out to Dartington Estate with it 'Green Table' cafe. 'Tally Ho' bus straight from Coronation St to Salcombe! Good TA pizza from 'Rumour' and 'Happy Apple' up top for essentials. Also Ben's Farm shop opposite! Amazing Annexe for comfort, cleanliness and most of all quirkiness! Perfect! Many thanks.

June 2021

Beautiful courtyard garden

May 2021

COMFORTABLE ACCOMMODATION IN CENTRE OF TOTNES. ENJOYED WALK TO SHARPHAM VINEYARD (BUT HAD TO WALK THROUGH FIELD OF COWS!). GREAT VISITS TO GREENWAYS AND COLLATON FISHACRE AND BRIXHAM. WEATHER NOT VERY GOOD BUT MANAGED TO DRY OFF THANKS TO HEATERS. FABULOUS MEAL AT GATHER IN FORE STREET - OUR 1ST MEAL INSIDE FOR 6 MONTHS.

May 2021

Very enjoyable stay in well equipped cottage in excellent location

April 2021

No improvements to suggest. This well appointed, quirky, cottage met and possibly exceeded our expectations.

December 2020

We had a lovely stay, thank you to all your team for the professional and friendly way they dealt with our enquiries.

October 2020

Enjoyed our stay very much. A clean well equipped property

October 2020

The only slight irritation was the fitted sheet in the master bedroom did not fit properly and during the process of sleep ruffled and became uncomfortable. We believe the sheets used had shrunked and as much as we tried, the bottom fitted sheet would not cover the mattress. Otherwise a comfortable stay. Mr/Mrs Sadler had thought of a comprehensive inventory which was appreciated.

September 2020

You've been our bubble. Don't want to leave! Thank you!

September 2020

We have enjoyed the comfortable, well-quipped cottage and the lovely town of Totnes! Hope to be back!

September 2020

Fantastic cottage. Great location. Totnes and surrounding area cannot be faulted! We will be back!

September 2020

Very nice and comfortable stay at Garden Annexe. Love stepping out of the door onto the High Street. See if you can find the growler in the kitchen cupboard and get it filled with some cracking beers at Wine and Greene. Cheers!

October 2019

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were impressed with the standard of the accommodation and its handy location just off the High Street with local restaurants and shops virtually on the doorstep. Surprisingly the location was very quiet as it was set back from the main street. Great holiday.

August 2019

Really well equipped and excellent location. Clean and tidy throughout. Excellent WiFi signal in all areas of property. Not quite enough toilet roll provided for whole week but that didn’t really matter

August 2019

Yes.

August 2019

Lovely bright and spotless accommodation in Totnes. We travelled down by train and didn't miss the use of a car at all as the local walks were great and the riverboat and steam train were a real draw. The Garden Annexe was right on the High Street with the almost daily local market just across the road. We hardly needed to cook as the choice and variety of food on offer was superb and changed from day to day. We had a memorable vegetarian curry at Willows Restaurant (Wednesday night is curry night) and loved all the independent shops with their friendly staff. The Annexe was surprisingly quiet considering it's location, although my husband did initially wake in the early hours to the church chiming the hour but I slept through it all! very nice property and a lovely break in sunny South Devon!

June 2019

Yes we did enjoy our stay, to pack the car on the last day, we moved it to High Street the night before, and loaded it before 9.0am, and bought a one hour ticket.

May 2019

The cottage was first class in every way and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!!

May 2019

Totnes is a peaceful place to stay , but with plenty of very good eating places and pubs !! Will definitely return , hopefully to garden annexe which cannot be faulted .

October 2018

After recently having a disappointing stay in Weymouth with another company, I would like to congratulate the owners and yourselves on the property and the facilities provided. My sister and I were very grateful for all the hard work that has obviously gone into making the property a wonderful holiday let.

October 2018

A wonderful week despite a rainy day. We cannot find fault with this charming property! 5 star!

September 2018

We've had a fantastic week in this gem of a property. The best-equipped cottage we've ever stayed in and a marvellous location. Would recommend Bigbury-on-Sea beach and lunch at The Cott in at Dartington. We will definitely use Toad Hall again next year if we head in this direction!

September 2018

June 2017

Lovely.

May 2017

Very much so and a warm welcome on arrival with milk, cake etc. The location was ideal for our needs and felt very at home in the cottage. Very well equipped and very comfy beds.

April 2017

A lovely cottage so well situated and equipped, always a pleasure to stay there.

August 2016

Toad Hall were very helpful and made booking over the phone very easy. We liked the directions and the 'what to do' email that was sent before we left. The standard of the property was superb and we really enjoyed staying there for our holiday. We will be booking with Toad Hall again and have already recommended both the company and the property to friends and family.

August 2016

A charming property, tastefully and comfortably furnished to a very high standard. Nothing has been overlooked - a perfect holiday home for all

April 2016

This was a real gem of find, beautifully furnished throughout with added plus of an outside area. The 2nd bedroom is probably more suited to children or teenagers opposed to two adults as there is not too much room between the beds, however they were extremely comfortable beds. I would strongly recommend this cottage if you wanted a cosy base to see more of South Devon as it is ideally located. On the down side please be aware that it is situated close to the church and church bells chime every quarter hour with bongs on the hour 24/7, we're accustomed to this as we live in a village and soon became oblivious to the chimes, however if you're from a town this might be annoying, but otherwise excellent choice and we will use Toad Cottages in the future.
