There’s a comfortable sitting room with wood burner, a modern well equipped kitchen diner and upstairs three comfortable bedrooms.  A short drive or pleasant walk along the lane brings you into Slapton, with its village pubs and shop and a little further on you’re on Slapton beach. The nearby South West Coastal Path provides some beautiful walks and a visit to the historic port of Dartmouth, the market town of Kingsbridge and the yacht haven of Salcombe are all great days out.

Please Note, that owing to the quite steep steps leading down to the property, which can be slippery when wet this cottage isn't suitable for the elderly or those with walking disabilities.

Slapton is a small quaint village just a stone's throw from the outstandingly beautiful stretch of coastline at Slapton Sands, from where you can enjoy sweeping sea views across Start Bay, from the mouth of the river Dart in the north across to the craggy cliffs that curve round to Start Point Lighthouse in the south.

Slapton village is a short stroll from Slapton Sands beach, a 6km stretch of pebble beach, fronted by Start Bay and backed by the stunning Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve - a large freshwater lake separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land, and home to many species of wildlife including otters, eels, dormice and a huge number of birds and insects.

Slapton village itself boasts two pubs, The Tower Inn which is renowned for its excellent food, and The Queen's Arms, which has a pretty garden providing the perfect spot for a refreshing beer, whilst a shop/Post Office, café and more pub/restaurants can be found at nearby Torcross. There are also many wonderful walks in the area - through unspoilt countryside, around the Slapton Ley, and along the spectacular South West Coast Path.

Slightly further along the coastal road towards Dartmouth, you'll find Blackpool Sands, one of the most popular beaches in Devon. Here, the golden sand and shingle beach, green pines cliffs, and turquoise waters conspire to exude an almost Mediterranean feel. This beautiful, family-friendly beach is great for windsurfing, paddle boarding and canoeing, and when hunger strikes, the beach-side Venus Café is a great place to refuel with a view.

The lively market town of Kingsbride is just 7 miles away and offers a good choice of independent shops, cafés and pubs, as well as two supermarkets for stocking up on essentials.

A holiday cottage in Slapton offers a good base for enjoying the breath-taking beauty of this special corner of South Devon.

March 2019

Excellent Food, Beer, Staff and atmosphere...!!!

March 2019

Great food; hit and miss service; unwelcoming “locals” crowding out the bar area and making it difficult to get to the bar to buy drinks.

August 2018

Great food, great wine and great service. Our whole experience was fantastic and I would visit again should we visit the area in the future.

August 2018

Charming old pub full of character. We only had a drink and didn't eat here - but they had a tremendous selection of fresh fish on the board when we visited.

July 2018

We spent 2 weeks in Slapton & the Queens Arms was by far the best local, along with the fabulous food, tasty beer and the friendly locals really made our holiday special.

July 2018

Limited choice on the menu and food quite expensive for the portion size but staff very accommodating and welcoming.

June 2018

Great fish and chips!

June 2018

Excellent food and service in a lovely building.

May 2018

A beautiful, historic and friendly pub set in a delightful location and with a lovely garden. The food is excellent and certainly not the standard 'pub food'. A children's menu is also available and is more than adequate. This is a relaxed, family run, village pub where children & dogs are welcome. We have visited many times and particularly like their Beer Festival in May.

April 2018

Great food and very friendly

April 2018

Really nice atmospheric pub with very friendly and accomodating staff. Although the food was very nice and we all enjoyed our meal I thought it was quite over priced.

December 2017

Fantastic meal !

September 2017

Menu was a little odd with some items coming with accompliments and some not. Also the bar bites on the main restaurant menu (not sure where they actually fit in along with small plates and also a bar chalk board) making the menu a bit disjointed. When phoned to book, we were asked had we dined there before, when we said we hadn't, we were told only the side room was available. Side room was fine but no cutlery or side plates on table (unlike the other rooms) and a bucket arrived to set our own! No other people in the side room and there was also tables free in the main rooms so didn't feel particularly welcome.

September 2017

A lovely pub that accommodated us at short notice for my daughters birthday and the food was superb.

August 2017

We had a wonderful meal here. The place was lovely and staff were very friendly and were very accommodating with our dog. Would come again.

July 2017

Less than average food and I fail to see how the children can play in the courtyard - it's tiny and the front leads onto the road. Impossible to pay the bill with the contactless system - you literally have to walk to a tiny area and hope the wifi picks it up.

July 2017

Loved this place. Fantastic ambience and food. Helpful friendly staff and locals.

June 2017

Great pub. Atmospheric and nice staff.

June 2017

old and atmospheric but not impressed by food or prices

May 2017

Nice food, friendly staff - definately worth a visit!

May 2017

Fantastic food

April 2017

I very much adore the outdoor space with many interesting objects, such as chickens and incredible plants like magnolias and so on. The food is also rather good, and always makes the walk around the Ley worthwhile

December 2016

August 2023

Great food and really friendly and welcoming staff - super value for money too!

August 2023

Fabulous beer garden with view across the village. Super friendly bar staff

August 2023

Traditional pub with good 'pub grub' st reasonable prices. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice, multi-tierd beer garden. Only issue being that the garden has no cover, so on a weekday, when its raining and there's no where else to go, its massively over-subscribed and as they dont take bookings you can find yourself - quite literally - left out in the cold, with absolutely nowhere else to eat in Slapton. And the only shop shuts at 1pm...

August 2023

Went a ride to Slapton sands beach and visited this place had a nice snack and drinks.

July 2023

Lovely pub and lovely food , if u like traditional pub food this is the place to go, lovely beer garden aswell

Always go to the Queens when on holiday in Slapton. Sandra, Kevin and Adam are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble. Great food, excellent quality and perfectly cooked, spoilt for choice. Very dog friendly, our Apollo loves going in ! Its a proper local and we will be down again later this year.

November 2021

They are closed on a Monday but big portions of food and delicious

November 2021

Great, popular dog friendly pub. Food was marvellous. Gets busy and queueing to get in. Go round the back to get your table if able to sit outside. Order at bar, be patient for your food, it’s worth the wait. Ate there three times, in the week we were on holiday. Staff and service was excellent. Highly recommend a visit

September 2021

Lovely gardens homemade food beer excellent friendly atmosphere nothing to fault excellent the walk back to Florence cottage was all of 50 yards!!!

September 2021

We tried a number of different meals which were all superbly cooked. The hospitality from the staff was also great and I would not hesitate to return.

September 2021

We loved our visits here, beautiful gardens to sit in, a wonderful choice of food, well priced and portioned. The vegetarian /vegan options were a welcome sight, as many pubs tend not to have such a wide variety. The staff could not do more, ample hand gel and safety signs to keep people aware that Covid is still out there. We will definitely be visiting again when we return to the area in October.

September 2021

Great pub but shut on Sat, Sun and Mon of our bank holiday weekend. Only open limited hours.

September 2021

Lovely food/menu. Don’t take bookings but staff advised us to arrive at 5:15 ready for 5:30 opening as people start to queue around this time - they were right, it was already busy at 5:15. (Peak season end of august) Not a lot of indoor seating, lots more outside on the pretty terraces

September 2021

Lovely and quirky! Excellent!

September 2021

Really hospitable, lovely service and reasonably priced. Full of character and charm. Would highly recommend eating here.

August 2021

Lovely pub, very friendly service. Good food.

August 2021

Dog friendly pub frienfly do my staff snd nice garden to sit out in. Didn’t have good but it looked good

July 2021

Arrive early! Like every business, The queens Arms is dealing with increased custom; staff shortages and umpteen changes in guidance. They can only do so much and they’re doing their absolute best in the circumstances. A reduction in their menu choice would help them. That said, the menu is varied and the food ample and tasty. The pretty walled garden is a lovely place to enjoy an afternoon or evening. Staff are welcoming but rushed off their feet during busy periods. Be patient and arrive early otherwise expect a long wait on food. Great to have the bar open again.

July 2021

Decent pub grub in the heart of Slapton. Service slow, but it was very busy.

July 2021

April 2021

Fantastic local pub who have adapted to new restrictions really well. Their large, tiered garden is beautifully planted and makes for a lovely spot to enjoy a drink or a meal from their extensive menu. Children & dog friendly. Visited many times and never been disappointed.

April 2021

Great pub with great atmosphere and fab food. My only concern is that the tables are set too close to each other and not to COVID standards

November 2020

Lovely country pub food excellent especially the puddings and the publicans and made us feel very welcome

May 2019

Poor quality food that you wait an unacceptable time for. A simple order of ham,egg & chips took over 30 minutes, when the meal finally came the egg was rock hard, a simple meal ruined.

April 2019

Good hearty meals. A little gem!

April 2018

We go here every time we are in Devon even if we have to drive an hour to get here. We ate here 4 times this year and we are always delighted we the atmosphere, the staff always remember us and they are so dog friendly, one evening there were 9 dogs in. Do not drive past here and make sure you ring an book a table, you do not want to miss out this absolute gem of a pub !! Can't wait till next year

September 2017

This pub was fantastic. The meals were basic but very tasty and hot. The land lady was very friendly and approachable. overall highly recommended.

September 2017

A lovely pub with with wonderful hosts and a great menu, we visited several times whilst on holiday

August 2017

We booked a table at The Queens Arms, the menu looked good and varied. It is a charming place, set in the attractive village of Slapton. However, the service leaves something to be desired ! We arrived at 6.50pm and the food did not arrive until an a hour later, without apology! The food was good, but the service, badly let this pub down, and we did not eat there again for the remainder of the holiday, and we would have done if the service had been better!. The saving grace was the food and the lovely barman, he was charming, shame about the rest.!

July 2017

Very lovely and friendly staff, however, disappointed with the food. My fish and chips were virtually inedible due to the fish being so overcooked and the frozen chips of a very poor quality. Sadly, we visited on our first night and therefore didn't eat there again. The garden however, was very beautiful so we did return there to sit in the garden and have a couple of drinks with our dogs.

June 2017

returned again and as usual everything from staff to food excellent. Will be back next year Thoroughly recommended

We booked a table here online for Boxing Day lunch but when we arrived they told us they don’t take bookings. Luckily they had a table and we enjoyed a really good pub meal. August 2022

Excellent food, really nice atmosphere and surroundings, thank you for finding us a table as I thought I had made a booking, booked wrong pub.

July 2022

Very poor. Overpriced food (don't order the duck breast @£16 unless you're on a super low calorie diet). Beer too cold and expensive. I used to like the charm of the pub before it was renovated, now just lacks atmosphere.

May 2022

Had a drink there. Outside space at the back was lovely. We didn't eat there.

March 2022

Good and friendly pub. Fish and chips excellent.

September 2021

We have been back here many times when we have visited, beautiful gardens, now with covered heated area for those colder and wetter times. The only thing we would say is the lack of vegetarian options on the main menu.

Lovely farm shop with a wide range of products available and a nice cafe. It was within easy walking distance of Torcross which was great due to the closure of the local shop. The best bit was the adjacent South Hams brewery. July 2017

We love this place, probably popped in most days for delicious meat, cheese and treats. We don't eat out often as our dog is nervous around dogs that get too close so eating in can feel like a chore. But with lovely grub from a friendly shop, it becomes a treat. Plus it's supporting the local trade which is so important.

June 2017

Always a favourite for breakfast and for stocking up on delicious things for our holidays in Torcross. The tractor provides seemingly endless fun for a toddler and the friendly staff are all lovely.

We had food from here on a few occasions while on our vacation and it was so tasty and freshly cooked. Very nice indeed. Also open good hours. We were very happy customers

July 2023

Great place with gorgeous breakfast. Lovely cake. Nice outside seating Friendly staff.

June 2023

Had a lovely lunch sitting on the verandah overlooking the Let. Food and service top notch

May 2023

Very good fish and chips

June 2022

Although this is a great property in a wonderful place for a holiday, the standard of cleanliness is well below the standards one should expect when paying premium price, the wooden floor needs serious attention as it has ingrained dirt, leaving my crawling grandchild with filthy legs and feet despite my mopping to try and clean it. The vacuum was full of smelly dog hair, the toaster had not been cleaned and neither was the tumble drier which included the previous guests knickers! The internal windows and mirrors all need a thorough clean too! I’m very dissapointed with the standard particularly with the Covid 19 situation and with the response of THC, who seem to think it’s ok!

August 2021

Great fish & chips and ice cream

August 2021

End of July/early August 2021, still only takeaway service. Expensive chips, measly portion and 30 minute wait to takeaway

August 2021

Excellent ice cream

April 2021

Amazing food and customer service.

November 2020

This is a really good cafe that offers all sorts of food & drink. They’ve taken into account all the COVID restrictions so we felt safe. The staff were very helpful.

October 2020

An excellent take away dinner option! Far too good, as we ate from there several times this week!

August 2020

Great for a meal or a snack - the pizzas are Big. Nice inside and outside terrace facing the road, away from the winds off the sea. Very dog friendly.

September 2019

Great venue! Super service and super food.

August 2019

Had lovely fish and chips and ice cream here, we thought the fish and chips were better here than at the Start Bay and the ice cream better than at the other cafe, Sea Breeze.

May 2019

Our favourite place for drinks and food . Very friendly staff Perfect location Highly recommend .

May 2019

We had a lovely lunch here. Service was very good and quick. The restaurant was quiet which probably helped!

May 2019

Nice welcome including our dog. Excellent food, although we did have to wait 40 minutes - lunch time rush, ?. Would recommend.

April 2019

It would be useful to have a menu with prices outside so people could decide if it was expensive as we did.

Lovely food, shame it didn’t stay open later than 5pm in the week.

October 2017

Lovely place for meals - expensive for family of 5 and very busy but food was good especially the pizzas. Staff very polite and helpful too.

September 2017

Had a very nice meal here with my wife and daughters. The staff went out of their way to fulfil an unusual food order for picky kids. Some nice beers available too - a great way to spend an hour or so after a hard days walking.

August 2017

Good environment but no wifi and a long wait for our orders.

July 2017

Great place to eat and prices are great. Food is exceptional and we went a few times during our stay.

June 2023

Visited on a sunny morning in May so quite busy. We were greeted at the entrance, seated inside then left. No menu provided, I had to ask for it. A couple who arrived well after us had their order taken first. We waited for ages. Then discovered there is a half hour hour gap between breakfast orders ending and lunch orders beginning when only cakes are availble, not even a sandwich. Staff were rushed and inattentive, disappointing experience.

Slapton Sands
Slapton Sands
(2 miles)

(28)

A long stretch of beach with spectacular views of the sea stretching into the distance, Slapton Sands is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for good reason. Adjacent to Slapton Ley, a freshwater lake that’s home to an abundance of wildlife and one of the many reasons people come to visit the area, the beach has a history of welcoming families in the summer for long days in the sunshine, building sandcastles, surfing, windsurfing and kayaking. It’s amazing to believe that this peaceful corner of South Devon has its place in military history as in 1943 the beach was taken over by allied forces to use as a rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. However, live ammunition and poor visibility ended in the deaths of more than 700 servicemen, so today there is a stone monument in place for Operation Tiger, as it was called, as well as a Sherman Tank at nearby Torcross. On a more current note, there is a beachside café at Slapton Sands for teas, coffees and other light bites, and there are also toilets nearby. The beach has disabled access, and also allows dogs throughout the year, so it really is fun for everyone and very easy to get to. There is parking nearby and in the summer months from May to September there is lifeguard cover. Last, but not least, a small collection of pubs reside in Torcross for those who are feeling peckish after a long day in the fresh air, or if you have been for a nice walk along the sand!

Fab stretch of beach - quite a trek from one end to another, you’ll need a drink from the coffee van at Pilchard Cove or cafes in Torcross! Over the hill from Torcross to bee sands has an amazing view

August 2023

A stunning coastline well worth a visit. If you drive along the coast road from Dartmouth the views are incredible. Slapton Sands is a shingle beach and dog friendly. If the first car park is busy continue further on and the next one is usually quieter, payment required.

July 2023

Visited here out of respect for those who practiced the D-Day landings on this beach. If venturing doen to the sea from the car park please note it was hard getting back up as you sink into the stones, so not so good for those with any mobility issues.

July 2023

Beautiful pebbly beach, water was so clear!

June 2023

Lovely beach with clear blue sea, very small shingle so no good if u have children who want to build a sand castle, also water gets deep very quickly

Really interesting history. Great for the children to link back to a Michael Morpurgo story too.

April 2022

loved it

November 2021

Long pebbly beach. Parking right on the front.

September 2021

We visited on a very overcast day with a keen wind blowing, so we did not see the sands at their best. We walked into Slapton and had tea in the church and found a pleasant footpath back to the beach car park, which ran past the nature reserve at Slapton Ley.

September 2021

A beautiful, gentle walk along the side of the nature reserve, if you make it to the turn off to go into Slapton, there is a lovely pub up there, the Queens Arms great gardens, food and friendly staff.

September 2021

Absolutely stunning stretch of beach (non-sandy which we prefer) with miles of space. Beautiful for early morning dog walks with a coffee at the end from the 'cafe on the beach' at Strete Gate picnic area.

May 2021

Walked along the beach and round the Nature reserve whilst staying in Slapton village. Lovely long shingle beach - our dog loved it. Lovely circular walk through the medieval village and back through the Nature reserve and along the beach.

November 2020

Ample parking, nice walk along the beach.

October 2020

Beautiful beach with a stunning sunrise. The sound of the sea on the pebbles is very relaxing. Really clean . No rubbish . Beautiful walks nearby. Nice cafe and restaurants. Dog friendly too.

February 2020

If you love the sound of the waves on pebbles this has to be one of the best beaches in the world !

April 2019

A totally unspoilt stretch of beach with wild flowers and wonderfully coloured rocks. We were lucky to be staying on a stones throw away and spent a few happy hours there with our dog watching the locals beach fishing in the evenings - bliss!

August 2018

Lovely walking -

June 2018

Lovely walk for wild flowers, bird watching sea views

May 2018

Clean beach.No plastic.

May 2018

This is certainly a lovely beach and so little rubbish.

April 2018

Really interesting area and good walks along the coast and by the Ley. Generous provision of toilets and parking and a number of places to eat. Would particularly recommend The Start Bay Inn, The Boathouse and Seabreeze Cafe at Torcross. Also very handy that there is a bus should you want to walk one way and get a bus back. Very beautiful and peaceful.

October 2017

Beautiful beach right across from our Cottage

September 2017

Wonderful nature reserve with well signposted walks.

September 2017

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach - dogs allowed all year. Not many facilities - we went to the Strete end of the beach as there is a great little coffee hut there - great coffee and friendly staff.

September 2017

Clapton Sands is beautiful. The rocks are the most beautiful colours, wild flowers abound on the beach, the views in either direction are stunning and it is rarely over crowded. One of the most wonderful areas in the U.K.

May 2017

Great place for a walk along the beach and had some great events for children at Easter. Great fish and chips in the pub at the end on Torcross

Beesands
Beesands
(3 miles)

(45)

Close to Kingsbridge and a favourite amongst residents and holiday makers in the South West, Beesands is a wonderful mile-long shingle beach surrounded by fields and a freshwater lake. You get a real flavour of the West Country here with fresh crab sandwiches for sale nearby and lots of Devon holiday cottages within walking distance to make it really convenient. The beach has won awards from the Marine Conservation Society as well as having The Blue Flag marker to attest to its excellence and high standards, so families and swimmers can be reassured. The beach is popular for surfing and body boarding amongst other water sports including fishing, so tackle is on sale close by. You can pick up light bites at nearby cafes as and when you’re ready, making it easy to spend the whole day running around on the sand and enjoying your seaside holiday to the max. Beesands is very much a beach for everyone thanks to its convenient location, easy and free road parking along most of the beach, level access, and the toilets, cafes and pubs close by. Dogs are also welcome on the beach throughout the year so the whole family can enjoy it!

September 2023

Stunning beach, fantastic sunset.

August 2023

Great place for an evening drink - beach not very suitable for children .

August 2023

We stayed for a week in a house opposite the beach in Beesands. The beach is a pebble beach and is very quiet. There is no lifeguard but there are locals there everyday with their boats so I am sure they would let you know if the conditions were unsafe. There is a fish and chip shop/restaurant and 1 pub restaurant - both serving lovely food and offer very friendly service. There is very little nearby so you do need a car to get around. Nearest supermarket was around 20-30 minute car ride away. The kids went in the sea almost every day and had the best time! They wore full wetsuits and water shoes which I thoroughly recommend as it is a pebble beach, and the kids got stung by a jelly fish when they paddled without wetsuits. When the tide was in, or coming in, the kids felt safer as they were in their depth. When the tide is out, there is a ledge which drops quite sharply. I am not a fan of sand so sitting on my camping chair on the pebble beach was bliss for me. We even spotted seals on most days! The locals with their boats didn't seem too friendly but we loved watching them take their boats out and bring them back in again. It was fascinating. I would have loved to ask them more about the beach, tides and coastal erosion but they didn't seem very approachable. However, I do appreciate that they must find tourists a little irritating. I would absolutely go back to Beesands for a holiday. It is my idea of blissful relaxation.

August 2023

Friendly, quiet location and shingle beach. Nice beach walk to Torcross at low tide. Pub/restaurant and Britannia restaurant and takeaway were very good. Very narrow roads to Beesands from turning off main road, but enjoyable holiday

July 2022

Absolute delight to stay in this quiet little seaside village! Mostly holiday let properties nowadays but still some locals around to talk to about the history of the area. The village is extremely clean including the beach considering it is all dog friendly! Popular with local & travelling anglers mainly at weekends I also fished to some degree every day of our stay. We will be going back soon!

July 2022

Had a lovely walk. Beautiful setting.

June 2022

lovely location, enjoyed many morning walks along the beach, and caught 14 mackerel. The road access is not the best, drive slowly, you cannot do anything else, and hey who's in a rush on holiday

May 2022

Loved Beesands, we stayed in one of the cottages for a week and enjoyed the peace and quiet and strolling along the beach, very dog friendly to!

December 2020

14 Beesands is a great property. About 10 feet away from the beach/ sea wall. Pub 20 paces away. Lovely walks on the doorstep. Fabulous sunsets and seals swimming past. Who could ask for more. Well equipped cottage, very comfy beds cosy and warm

October 2020

The most wonderful little fishing village- narrow lanes on approach so drive carefully- but it's worth it. Lovely shingle beach and stunning views across Start Bay. Two great eateries- Britannia and The Cricket Inn are worth a visit. Beesands is just beautiful, I love it there.

September 2020

Amazing location right on the beach. We spent a week in Beesands and found the property to be perfect for our big group - plenty of space for everyone to relax and a very well appointed kitchen. Would highly recommend.

September 2020

Beautiful setting and lovely property decorated to a high standard, well equipped and perfect place for a getaway to peace and quiet. Short distance to the beach. Would definitely return. We had a super weekend at this property celebrating a family birthday

January 2020

Beautiful relaxing place to spend time.

November 2019

Lovely little beach, nice quiet location and free parking a bonus

August 2019

Worth the uphill/downhill walk along the coast path. Lovely spot.

August 2019

Easy to park, good food options. plenty of room for everyone.

August 2019

I love Beesands . The only sad thing is even more people have found out about it, 10 years since my last visit. Sadly the sea has removed the road handy for parking and is gradually eroding the cliff edges. Not as quiet as it used to be but the attractions of two nice eating places have probably increased the footfall.

June 2019

It’s a new look on the outside but the food very much of the same high quality at the Britannia in Beesands. The new ‘shack’ doesn’t really do it justice with a completely renovated contemporary dining room in keeping with the seaside location and beach hut vibe with excellent views of the bay. There seems to be loads more space too and the higher ceiling gives light to the treats being served from the kitchen. Dave and the team in the kitchen maintain their high standards of food preparation and making dishes that look and taste fantastic, the front of house team are equally as attentive making a great relaxed dining experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Britannia so come back if you have been before and see the changes or give it a go if you never have been. ????????

June 2019

I've been coming to Beesands since I was 2 years old (61 now!). Not every year since adulthood but still can't stay away. Its an ideal location for those who want to get away from it all. Its close enough to Kingsbridge and within easy reach of Dartmouth , Salcombe and Brixham. The locals are very friendly and will always be up for a chat. Its almost tempting to keep this little coastal secret to myself!

October 2018

Bit scary driving down to the beach due to the narrow road but worth it when you got there. Had fish and chips and ate them on the tables that were provided while looking out to sea.

September 2018

Had a wonderful meal in the beach cafe .

July 2018

We've been coming to this general area for over 20 years now and have stayed in many of the surrounding villages . This was the first time we'd stayed in Beesands - but we had walked through it on our coastal walks on many, many occasions. We both loved the peaceful charm of the place - secluded , tranquil and away from it all . But unlike Hallsands (next village along) , it does have two places where you can eat ( The cricket Inn and the Britannia0)and they are both very good . The beach is great - shingle - but really uncrowded in June . ( We were lucky with the weather) and on a clear, sunny day - it is quite magical. ( What a shame the water is so freezing cold !!) This stretch of coastline is stunning - and even if you do no other walks - walk over to Hallsands and read about the old village that was washed away in January 1917 - or just drink in the stunning views . I love this part of Devon and it never fails to take my breath away when you stand on the coast path near the lighthouse and look back across Start Bay to Hallsands , Beesands , Torr Cross , and over towards Dartmouth. Wonderful.

June 2018

Beautiful stoney beach with views of Start Point Lighthouse. Tasty fish and chips available, popular pub and public toilets.

June 2018

Lovely place, good food and very dog friendly :-)

March 2018

Britannia Fish - Great fish - always fresh and lovely family run business. A must for anyone who likes eating good fish!

May 2017

Ideal for quiet and peaceful holiday with two good restaurants both of which are dog friendly.

Blackpool Sands
Blackpool Sands
(4 miles)

(35)

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

Looks a lovely beach but unfortunately no dogs allowed at all

June 2023

Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.

May 2023

we love this beach always clean good parking clean facilities and good cafe.

September 2022

We did go to this beach, couldn’t go in the sea as it was so rough, was beautiful though. No sand, but still very nice.

September 2022

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

September 2022

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

August 2022

A lovely beach, stunning veiw as you drive down towards it. Very clean with clear water.

August 2022

Lovely clean beach although very quiet. There was a small charge for parking.

April 2022

great place

November 2021

very clean beach and gorgeous setting. good that it didn't allow dogs.

September 2021

Welcoming, clean attractive

September 2021

No sand! Very clean and scenic, but very disappointing if you want to run around on sand

August 2021

Lovely pretty beach with good facilities.

June 2021

Very large shingle beach, charges for parking at a set fee no matter how long your visit. Can pay by card for parking as well as cash.

May 2021

Great beach

November 2020

Lovely sandy beach. Parked here (£2) whilst doing a circular walk and then returned for a walk along the beach.

November 2020

Dogs allowed on beach out of season, a bracing walk with coffee and millionaire shortbread at the cafe to finish.

October 2020

Great beach really beautiful , even in the rain, as the Venus café is right on the beach and is warm, dry and serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices.

October 2019

One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.

October 2019

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach nestled between steep hills at either end. Excellent facilities including one of the best beach cafes we've ever visited.

September 2019

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

September 2019

Parking charge between £3 - £8 depending on time of year, Also food good but e.g. Hawaiian Prawns (£9) consisted of 5 prawns. Not good value for money.

October 2018

Lovely beach, not sandy but the stones are okay. Good food, beverages, coast guards, Nice view and not so cowded

August 2018

Lovely clean beach in super location along coastal road. Great place to visit.

May 2018

Beautiful clean beach with excellent facilities.Clean toilets lovely cafe and shop.Lifeguard on the beach. No dogs allowed.Plenty of parking. We enjoyed rock pooling at the far end of the beach. The owner does a great job.You can also visit Blackpool Sands garden but we did not have time. Also a juggler was there on the day we went great fun for everyone.

August 2017

Beautiful location but shame it a shingle beach and not sandy. Also very disappointed with the £8 fee to park the car .

August 2017

Perfect venue for a sunny day! Secluded beach which is clean and tidy, with a cafe, snack bar and shop, beach equipment hire too

July 2017

The cost of the parking steep

June 2017

Our family 's favourite beach

June 2017

Stunning beach, and you can get takeaway cream tea from the cafe to have on the beach!!

May 2017

North Hallsands
North Hallsands
(4 miles)

(7)

A quiet beach of fine shingle with a reed bed providing the backdrop, North Hallsands is a picturesque place to visit for anyone staying in one of our holiday cottages in Devon. The beach is divided into north and south, and it’s about nine miles from Kingsbridge facing towards Start Bay. There is level access to the sand from North Hallsands car park, although it is small so keep that in mind in busier months, although there’s also another small car park five minutes away for South Hallsands. You might want to note that there aren’t any facilities or toilets close to the beach, which does mean that it’s fantastically peaceful and an experience that’s all about the natural environment, which ultimately is what we all love about a Devon break! For those bringing their four legged friends with them, the beach is completely dog friendly, welcoming them all year round, so just don’t get carried away with all that fun in the sand and get cut off by the tide in all the excitement. The sand stretches a fair distance at low tide and we wouldn’t want you to get wet!

Great little beach, my furry companion had the best time here. She couldn't contain her excitement. Amazing for us both watching and listening to the sounds of the sea.

December 2023

Really nice walk from Beesands.

October 2023

Lovely walk from Beesands. Takes about half an hour.

June 2023

lovely beach, I walked through there twice on my way along the coast path, really peaceful, the lost fishermans village is also worth visiting just a short walk from the beach

May 2022

Great walk up to Hallsands, interesting piece of history.

April 2022

Lovely little place, great to take a picnic as no facilities but that's part of its charm. Wonderful views of Start Bay and a great base to walk to Start Point and beyond or to Beesands. Well worth a visit.

September 2020

Gorgeous beach, but be careful if you have a dog that likes to run as our Border Collie got very sore paws on the pebbles.

Lannacombe Beach
Lannacombe Beach
(5 miles)

(13)

Rugged and unspoiled, Lannacombe is the beach for those looking for total escapism on their South West holiday. Small and perfect for escaping from the summer crowds, it’s one of the best places to visit to simply enjoy the Devon scenery in all its natural glory. There’s a small car park just behind the beach so do get there early in order to guarantee a space, although there is further parking a short walk away if need be. Dogs are welcome at the beach throughout the year and as it offers access to the Coast Path it’s a good idea to combine your visit with a walk to take in the views of sea and countryside, perhaps towards Start Point where there is further parking around 30-40 minutes away on foot. At low tide the beach offers gentle rock pooling so it’s a lovely spot to head to for a quiet afternoon with the family, building sandcastles and eating sandwiches if you remember to bring them. There aren’t any cafes and restaurants immediately on site, so do remember to take anything you need with you, and there aren’t any toilets in the near vicinity either, so that’s worth keeping in mind when you plan your day. If you have been on holidays in Devon and Cornwall before you will also know that you need to watch our for the tide at many of the beaches, including this one in order to avoid disappointment or getting wet, you can pick up a tide timetable at local post offices!

Lovely walk along the coast from Horizons. Beautiful sandy beach

April 2024

Lannacombe is a lovely beach! The beach is gentle and slopes nicely into the sea. We swam in October and it was beautiful. If you haven’t been there are no facilities and only parking for about 8-9 cars so get there early in peak season. It’s on the SW Coast path and we have walked from East Prawle though takes a while. Fabulous beach. Keep it to yourself!

October 2023

Best beach in the area, spent a lovely sunny day here.

September 2023

A favourite beach of us, we spent another lovely afternoon there, superb view and great for rock pooling.

April 2022

Fantastic beach! Secluded and beautiful. Windy narrow lanes to reach it but worth it. We were able to get a car space in the small car park which was great. Our dog loved it and so did we!

October 2021

Best beach in the world! Dont tell anyone or else we will never get one of the 8 parking spaces!

September 2021

Unspoilt and away from the crowds. Perfect secret

August 2021

Beautiful unspoilt beach.

July 2021

We walked here from East Prawle, it was a delightful find and we explored the beach whilst en route along the coastal path. I imagine it would be extremely busy in high season but we were the only ones there so felt very lucky to have found it.

June 2021

Lovely but inaccessible down rough extremely narrow lane with very tiny parking & limited turning , best to walk from Start Point car park

October 2020

Very limited parking (but we got lucky!). Wide, spacious but covered in dense seaweed - what's happened? It never used to be so weedy.

August 2019

Excellent secluded beach once you find it. Signs would be helpful but this would be detrimental as visitors would "flood" the small car park. Well worth visiting and walking along the stunning cliff walks

September 2018

A lovely beach where we enjoy sitting and eating our sandwiches after walking from Start Point.

May 2018

October 2023

Another absolutely fantastic week, and the addition of the smeg fridge freezer in the kitchen spot on!

August 2023

Absolutely, a fantastic house in a great location.

July 2023

The cottage is as described in previous comments. The location is perfect the privacy second to none The wildness of the garden is attractive My only comment would be if you are over 5ft 10ins you must pay attention to the fact all the doorways into the hall are well below standard height But don’t let that discourage you from going

June 2023

We booked the Friday before the following Saturday booking as the weather was settled & promised fine & lovely all week; which it was & it was(lovely)......both the weather & the cottage. The Devon equivalent of where we live in Derbyshire.

May 2023

Once again LFD and Toad Hall absolutely fab! Our next stay has already been booked!

April 2023

We enjoyed the cottage how warm it was. It was a shame not to have more leaflets on the area so we could plan visits especially when the internet went down for three days

October 2022

Once again, a truly wonderful stay and will be booking ..... Again! ?

October 2022

A really fab place to stay. We had a lovely holiday. Thank you!

April 2022

Lovely stay, house was lovely, warm and cosy.

November 2021

We loved it so peaceful and eveything we needed the house lovely loved it would go back

November 2021

Yes very much so

October 2021

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage, very well equipped and a lovely peaceful location. The garden wasn’t completely dog proof but we enjoyed the seating area at the top when the sun shone with beautiful views.

September 2021

Yes, we loved the location and the cottage was full of character.

July 2021

Yes very much. Especially loved the garden with views across hills. The house was great, excellent kitchen, well equipped with appliances that worked well. Great bath ( I did not use the shower, but think it was fine) . Excellent TV to watch tennis and football finals which we did. Comfortable. Best cottage I’ve stayed in with Toad Hall. Thank you

July 2021

Once again, absolutely fantastic! We've booked again.

July 2021

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would most definitely stay there again

June 2021

We had a brilliant stay. Weather at times was awful but the cottage was warm friendly and welcoming.

October 2020

There were no Pyrex dishes to use for casseroles etc. Upstairs radiators not heating despite underfloor heating working. Bags left for linen left did not correspond to what was stated in Toad Hall folder. No DVD player as stated on website. WiFi code not visible enough, perhaps have this stuck to router or near router.

September 2020

We enjoyed our stay though it was definitely a compromise this year. The low ceilings were just about bearable but the garden was lovely!

August 2020

Yes, beautiful house in wonderful location.

September 2019

we really enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage. The cottage has everything one needs, the location is wonderfully tranquil.

September 2019

We loved the idyllic cottage and tranquil location. Our grandchildren enjoyed playing in the garden. We bought meat from the Stokeley Farm Shop for our barbeque which was delicious. It was a pleasure to visit the local beaches and find them so clean and uncrowded especially in August. Great holiday with many happy memories.

August 2019

We did enjoy our stay but unfortunately there were a couple of issues and the caretaker was at first not available and secondly not very willingly to go the xtra mile. Furthermore for a stay of two weeks it’s convenient to include a change of bed linen standard and not that we as guest has to make a call (with a caretaker who isn’t reachable). And with eventually contact per telephone a couple of days later; it’s hardly worth the trouble to change the linen.

October 2018

Cottage needs a little bit of TLC, new rugs etc. Its so nearly there, stunning location.

July 2018

Yes superb

May 2018

loved our stay at Langford Down once again, superb part of the South Hams to holiday in. The tranquility is breathtaking. loved our walks down the lanes to the Queens Arms. Great to sit in the beer garden and look across Slapton Village.

October 2017

Overall the stay and cottage was great. Especially for the owners letting us have the property with the 4 dogs, we looked after the property as if it were our own and vacuumed and cleaned up every day. We have stayed in this location before so we knew what was around the area, will definitely be booking another stay soon.

April 2017

Although we had a lovely stay, my only complaint would be that we did not have hot water to start with, so I called Jane Bickle to advise her of this, leaving a message on home phone and mobile. My call not was returned and we had to make do with boiling continuous kettles. On Monday morning I called Toad Hall Cottages and I must say, staff there were helpful and we received a call back later from them advising us of what to do. I don't know why we never received a call back from the caretaker of the cottage. A couple of days before we left the property we received a pre-printed card from Jane Bickle, requesting (politely) if we could empty bins/strip beds etc. and stating how busy they were and how busy the roads would be ....... I didn't appreciate this, especially as my telephone call was not returned.

Thank you for your feedback, we have passed this to the caretaker and the owner to try and ensure this does not happen again. On occasions when a caretaker is not able to be contacted there is a member of The Toad Hall Team on call for emergencies. We are glad you enjoyed your stay overall and we hope to see you again soon. Many Thanks The Toad Hall Team.

October 2016

The cottage in which we stayed was beautiful, a real romantic getaway nestled amongst the rolling hills. It was incredibly cosy and welcoming and amazingly equipped with everything that we needed and more! The flowers, welcome card and cake were very thoughtful touches as were the amazing 'doggy bags' that were hand delivered to our canine companions! Thank you so very much for such a wonderful holiday, we can't wait to return in the new year. *I would definitely recommend using Toad Hall Cottages as the communication, helpfulness and support of all the staff that I dealt with was totally faultless. Many thanks again.
