Riverside Loft apartment enjoys a highly sought after location within the heart of the vibrant town of Totnes in the South Hams, South Devon.  Swing open the double doors of the Juliet balcony in the living room which overlooks Vire Island as well as the River Dart beyond, and instantly relax as a riverside ambiance filters into this light and airy second floor apartment.  This is a perfect and spacious retreat for couples who wish to either explore Totnes’ diverse amenities found upon the apartment’s doorstep or investigate the countryside and coastline of the South Hams or the nearby English Riviera as well as a number of local National Trust properties or two local steam railway routes.  The apartment has been most tastefully and thoughtfully presented whilst retaining many of its original former warehouse character features such as stone walls, exposed beams and high vaulted ceilings.

Totnes is full of character in respect to its historic architecture as well as being famed for its quirky charm and highly spirited friendly community. Its cobbled streets and narrow lanes offer an abundance of independent shops, galleries, museums, live music venues and several weekly food / flea markets.  Totnes is also well known for its flair in promoting local food produce and boasts several micro-breweries; and within steps of the apartment’s door guests can enjoy a well known waterside bistro and delicatessen.  Afterwards, enjoy a waterside amble or a leisurely boat trip down stream to Dartmouth.

External steps lead to the building front door which enters into a bright communal area with a spiral staircase to the second floor, where the apartment front door is situated.

The front door opens into a spacious and light hallway

Superb open plan living area with vaulted ceiling with character roof trusses, exposed as well as painted stone walls and glazed double doors which open to a Juliet balcony with excellent river views.

Lounge area with two sofas, SMART TV, music system with Bluetooth capabilities.

Dining area with large table to accommodate four.

Well equipped kitchen with electric hob, electric double oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge with ice box, washing machine and espresso machine.

Ladder steps to mezzanine floor not available to guests due to its steepness.

Bedroom with 5ft bed, pretty painted dressing table, chest of drawers and hanging rail and velux window. Please note that the bed can be split to offer two 2ft 6inch small single beds.

Contemporary shower room with shower unit, wash basin, WC and heated towel rail.

Totnes is a small historic market town located on the River Dart in South Devon. A well-known centre for artists, painters, musicians and its twice-weekly market offering antiques, musical instruments, second-hand books, handmade clothing, and local produce. The town exudes a bohemian feel and boasts a wonderful selection of unique and independent shops, restaurants and delis offering a wealth of different produce to try.

The town is overlooked by Totnes Castle which was built in Norman times and is now run by English Heritage, the castle enjoys far-reaching views of the town as well as the surrounding Devonshire countryside.

With fantastic transport links, Totnes is on the main train line from Exeter to Plymouth and is easily accessible from London or the Midlands. The town is also home to the South Devon Railway, one of Devon’s best-loved tourist attractions, with a steam railway which runs through stunning countryside along the River Dart to the nearby town of Buckfastleigh.

Another 'alternative' way to get around is by the River Cruise which runs from Totnes to Dartmouth, taking in the pretty waterside village of Dittisham, and Agatha Christie's scenic estate at Greenway on its route. Dartmouth itself is a historic port town, and offers a great selection of shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants as well as excellent sailing in the sheltered harbour.

For a day trip with a difference, the nearby Sharpham Vineyard is a lovely place for a leisurely stroll and to enjoy locally produced wine and cheese. Alternatively, it's just over 10 minutes' drive to South Brent, a gateway to the bleak rugged wilderness of Dartmoor.

If you're visiting in December, Totnes is well known for its magical Christmas markets which extend throughout the town and serve as the perfect tonic for anyone struggling to get in the festive spirit. Most shops open late and the high-street becomes lined with food and craft stalls, making it a great chance to enjoy some street food and purchase a few special presents.

A holiday cottage in Totnes provides a lovely base for exploring the beautiful countryside along the River Dart in any season.

A parking permit is supplied for the long stay Totnes car parks within a short walk from the apartment.  It is possible to unload baggage outside the property.

  • Included: Bed linen and towels, WiFi, travel cot, high chair, electricity, central heating (gas).
  • Telephone: Mobile reception good.
  • Local Facilities: Plenty of pubs, bistros, cafes and restaurants in Totnes as well as supermarkets, leisure centre with swimming pool and mainline railway station with direct services to London and other branch cities. Several beaches and Dartmoor National Park within 20 minutes drive.

Great food and a large selection of drinks including local ales and ciders. There is ample seating both inside and out, but it does get very busy. It was quite expensive, but comparable to other venues in the town. Staff were polite, but not particularly friendly or welcoming.

Know one was bothered when we asked for table early evening and we’re told ‘they didn’t accept Walk-ins’ tried again the following lunchtime and got the same reply

The whole family found the Elizabethan house museum very interesting

August 2023

Unexpectedly hands-on. Loved seeing the barrel clock chime the remote bell by the front door via a cable. Did not expect to see the computing area on top floor with history of Charles Babbage and association with Totnes. We learnt many things, not least the origin of the wardrobe :-)

October 2019

An excellent museum in a special building, lots of local history and information, free entry was unexpected.

Broadsands Beach
(6 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Elberry Cove
(7 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove
(8 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(8 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

August 2023

Breakwater Beach
(9 miles)

One of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, Breakwater beach is a Blue Flag, shingle beach right next to Brixham’s bustling harbour. With disabled ramps to the promenade and beach, as well as toilet facilities, adjoining parking and a café, this lovely, family-friendly beach is accessible for everyone. Hire out a deckchair and spend the day watching the kids splash about in the safe, clean water, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, learn to scuba dive! Breakwater beach is a great place to learn how to scuba dive, thanks to some of the warmest and calmest waters in the country. Whilst dogs are welcome out of season, there is a dog ban in place from May to September.

April 2024

The central location and great setup make the apartment an ideal place to stay.

April 2024

a very great place to stay the apartment as well as Totnes

January 2024

One of our favourite holiday lets

August 2023

Excellent quality service, accommodation and resources. Could not fault this stunning apartment.

July 2023

Housekeeper was prompt & very helpful when the doorhandle to the flat fell off! The flat is simply lovely. The Waterside Bistro below the flat was very noisy on Friday & Saturday evenings (hen party etc) but the owners can't do much about that! It was tastefully decorated & thoughtfully furnished. Very comfortable.

July 2023

Really enjoyed our stay in this lovely apartment. It's a shame that we can't book for 2 or 3 nights.

May 2023

A lovely flat, we really liked that it is so light (velux windows in the roof of the loft.)

March 2023

an excellent flat with excellent owners with great communication thanks

March 2023

Mary had given much thought to all the details which make a great place to stay.

October 2022

It's a beautifully designed apartment in a superb location.

September 2022

Yes throughly enjoyed our stay.

July 2022

Totnes is a great base to explore the South Hams and Southern Dartmoor. I enjoyed my stay very much.

May 2022

Perfect, we love it, will surely be back next year.

January 2022

Riverside Loft is fabulous, stylish, spacious, clean, very well furnished, and equipped to a high standard with lots of attention to detail. The large bed with crisp white linen is super comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped; everything you need to cook a good meal is there. We really enjoyed our holiday there! Our only wish was that the large shower room was a little warmer. There is a parking permit for long stay car parks in Totnes and the nearest one is on the Steamer Quay which is an easy 8-minute level walk away, we had no problem with that. For unloading and loading there are a few spaces just outside the building but it can be busy. Alternatively, there are parking spaces just a little further along the road on both sides and it only costs 30p for 30 minutes, that’s where we parked when leaving. The location of the apartment is ideal for everything Totnes has to offer, the town is on your doorstep. The owners take an interest in their guests’ comfort and wellbeing and Mary is very helpful. Staying there in December, we very much appreciated the lovely Christmas welcome surprise of wine and goodies, thank you!

September 2021

The builders and scaffolding were really only a problem on Thursday when they decided to sand down the Juliet Balcany and were on the roof above the television early in the day.

August 2021

Yes, we enjoyed our stay, the apartment had everything we needed for a great stay.

August 2021

We very much enjoyed our stay . The accommodation suited us perfectly, so much so that we felt at home enough to cook and eat in - although The Steam Packet Inn and The Bull Inn rarely disappoint.. We would very much like to stay there again later this year.

May 2021

fantastic stay despite the weather, will will return here

October 2020

Not the first stay with toad hall- though last time must have been nearly 30 years ago when I stayed at buckland court slapton. Always had first class accommodation and that has not changed many years later! Apartment was superb and owners v helpful when we had trouble with the key- was sorted v quickly. Not first time to Totnes, but again didn't seem to have changed+ still a wonderful town and everybody v helpful and so welcoming, even though this pandemic is making people wary of strangers. Could not fault anything. We will be back. Would recommend visit to Totnes castle and walk to sharpham along the Dart. Still so many things left to see.

September 2020

My second stay at this spacious, comfortable apartment. Everything you need is close by, and only a few minutes walk from the railway station. Good food and friendly service at the King William IV.

August 2020

Enjoyed our stay very much, just a shame that covid situation dictates arrival and departure times, otherwise excellent.

August 2020

the property was of high quality and a pleasure to stay in, more towels perhaps but most people will be happy with 2 for the week, we preferred 3 but this is a minor point and we did have superb weather.

August 2020

Yes we had a lovely time down in Devon bar our car getting written off by someone burning a stolen car next to it!

September 2019

Perfectly located apartment, within walking distance of everything Totnes has to offer

September 2019

Great holiday in this large, light and airy apartment. Owners keen to ensure that everything meets expectations and welcome guest feedback. Spiral staircase up to front door of the apartment needs careful negotiation when carrying a suitcase. Good food available at the Royal Seven Stars hotel just across the road and at the King William IV just up the hill. Hope to return next year.

May 2019

Very enjoyable, on the whole; very good owners, who take an interest in their property and their guests. A small number if improvements would make this an excellent place to stay.

May 2019

Love it

March 2019

Lovely flat will probably stay there again.

January 2019

First time we have booked with Toad Hall and very much enjoyed our stay at the Riverside Loft, very comfortable and everything you need for a relaxing self catering holiday - excellent facilities. Good communication from the booking team and the hosts. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

August 2018

the riverside loft at Totnes was ideally located for both shops & restaurants. we had a lovely holiday. thank you.

August 2018

Delightful apartment, with the owners going that extra mile, supplying some Milk, bread and a cream tea for two. This is a great surprise after a long drive.

June 2018

We spent a wonderful week in Totnes, and the loft was perfectly located – especially if you like a cheese shop on your doorstep! It was a great visit. Thank you.

April 2018

Just great and the parking permit was brilliant!

March 2018

A lovely apartment in a great location. Totnes on the doorstep, lovely river views and everything you need nearby. Really well-equipped, comfortable luxurious bed and good bathroom. Mary couldn't have been more helpful - especially in the snow.

December 2017

Yes, perfect location, atmospheric and sophisticated accommodation, loved it ! No detail overlooked, welcome pack, up to date info on local attractions, good maps walks and dining recommendations, plus great shower, comfy bed, well equipped kitchen. What more could we want ? Thanks to the owners and Toad Hall for a fabulous holiday.

November 2017

Fantastic apartment and location. Owners very helpful. I had a great stay and would love to return.

September 2017

It was impressive how comprehensively equipped the property was, and very convenient for strolling into town.

August 2017

It was brilliant. And I will be booking again for next year.

July 2017

We had a really nice holiday. As it was such a boiling hot week we struggled a bit to cool the place down as we were a bit worried about birds flying in when the windows and doors were open. In 'normal' summer weather I don't think that would be a problem.

February 2017

We had a lovely stay at Riverside Loft. The apartment was brilliantly situated in Totnes and was really well equipped and spotlessly clean.

June 2016

Had a lovely week in this superb apartment so comfortable and clean every need catered for .Will certainly return

September 2015

This property is a gem! The welcome was wonderful and we had a really splendid holiday. Thanks to the owners for all their thought that they put into the apartment. Its location, its quality of equipment and furnishings as well as its comfort all made our stay thoroughly enjoyable.

September 2015

Riverside loft is an excellent apartment, the website cannot do justice to how spacious it is. We have used four and five star properties that would fit into a corner of this place. It is beautifully laid out and has every bit of equipment you could need and certainly deserves its four star rating (at least). Some people may need to be aware there is a spiral staircase leading up to the entrance. The location makes it an excellent base, for Totnes town and South Devon generally (although there can be a little noise from the restaurant below). We would certainly consider using Riverside Loft again.

June 2015

We are regular users of Toad Hall Cottages and have never been disappointed with the accommodation. In this case the apartment was better than anticipated. Far roomier that your photos suggest. It is the first time a decent coffee machine has been provided!!

June 2015

A very comfortable apartment with everything we could need and a great position for many local attractions. Would love to stay again and recommend to our friends.

May 2015

Riverside Loft was absolutely perfect for a couple visiting Totnes; cosy but spacious, very well equiped and very stylish. Our best stay in a Toad Hall Cottage so far.

February 2015

We had a great week at Riverside Loft, fully rested and recuperated. Whats a chill out. Lovely apartment with a good layout and location. I am sure that we will be back.

September 2014

Excellent apartment in an ideal location. We plan to return. Many thanks for initial help and advice.

September 2014

Fantastic stay! Really love the apartment and the lovely personal touches. Thank you.

September 2014

Everything was thought of at Riverside Loft. Good information, nice finishing, thoughtful touches and lovely decor (we loved the pictures in the hallway). We thought that the parking and noise may be an issue but the parking permit and living so near a bakers made up for that!

September 2014

An amazing break in such a lovely location. Riverside Loft was an amazing venue in a prime location and so stylish and relaxing. Enjoyed every moment and will certainly plan to return.

August 2014

Riverside Loft has the 'WOW' factor. So clean, beautifully furnished, all the mod cons, so light and airy. Absolutely perfect. A dream! Thank you.

August 2014

This is one of the best equipped, comfortable and very homely holiday accommodation that I've ever stayed in. Loved it. Totnes is great. Misty and I enjoyed the river walks. I loved sitting in the window in the morning sun and watching the world go by. Space, decor, comfort and attention to detail e.g. wine, bread, milk, efficient info, dog bowls / biscuits, supply of coffee, tea etc are most liked. Our first booking with Toad Hall Cottages - will use again. I would definitely stay here again.

August 2014

The apartment is beautiful and the location was perfect for our needs - walking, canoeing and relaxing. Also thank you for all the little things that made the place so welcoming and hospitable - the cream tea, bread, milk, olive oil and the parking permit! Its those things that help people feel valued and appreciated.

August 2014

We really enjoyed our stay and it is a lovely apartment. The location is convenient with food, shops and town center on the doorstep. We will be recommending Riverside Loft to our friends and couples we know back home.

July 2014

Beautiful apartment. Clean and spacious. Catered for everything. Good comprehensive guide to things and places to do and go. Thanks for a lovely stay.

July 2014

It's a lovely place, everything has been thought of and we had a lovely stay. We liked the location and the attractiveness of the apartment itself.
